On December 16, 2014, seven
terrorists attacked the Army Public School in Peshawar and gunned down
141 people, of which 132 were reportedly school kids. Deeply affected by
the headline grabbing massacre, Ali Zafar, along with the 'The Citizens
Foundation', initiated the '141 Schools for Peace' initiative, with the
tribute song “Urainge“.
“The idea was to use the money donated through the campaign and
collected from downloads of the song, to build 141 schools across
Pakistan as a memorial to the lives lost,“ says the 35-year-old actor,
adding that work on 23 have begun. “They will provide free education to
poor students who can't afford the same. People from around the world
have donated to the cause, with more coming in.“
“Urainge“, which has been sung, written and composed by Ali, was supported by 41 Pakistani celebrities, including actors Fawad Khan and Imran Abbas, cricketer Shoaib Malik and director Bilal Lashari, who featured in the music video. “The message is that the youth of Pakistan unites against terrorism and aspires for a country where there is no fear and only love. It has inspired so many world over,“ says Ali, who after the incident couldn't sing or compose for a month, but is now happy that he is singing for a cause.
