Ali Zafar hits out at Javed Akhtar, calls his remarks on 26/11 ‘insensitive’

HINDUSTAN TIMES (February 25, 2023)
Pakistani actor-singer Ali Zafar, who recently hosted Javed Akhtar and performed in front of him, has now reacted to the veteran writer-lyricist’s earlier remarks on his country.
Last week, at the Faiz Festival held in Lahore, Akhtar had spoken about how perpetrators of the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks are “roaming freely” in Pakistan.
Reacting to this, Ali took to his Instagram Stories and stated that Akhtar’s remarks could “deeply hurt the sentiments” of people. He wrote, “Guys, I love you all and truly value your praise and criticism equally. But I always request one thing — verify facts before reaching any conclusion or judgement. I was not present at the Faiz Mela nor aware of what was said until the next day, when I saw it on social media.”
He went on to add, “I am a proud Pakistani and naturally, no Pakistani would appreciate any statement against its country or people, specially at an event meant to bring hearts closer than farther. We all know how much Pakistan has suffered and continues to suffer at the hands of terrorism. Such insensitive and uncalled-for remarks can deeply hurt the sentiments of so many people.”

My debut Hindi film was fun yet conveyed to everyone that I can act and fit in both worlds-Taapsee Pannu

As told to Himesh Mankad (MUMBAI MIRROR; August 22, 2019)
I was working in films down South when I got a call from Mumbai. David Dhawan was remaking Chashme Baddoor and wanted to know if I would be interested in being a part of the film. They were looking for a girl like Preity Zinta for the role of Seema and going by the character sketch, Telugu director Puri Jagannadh recommended my name for the role. When I first met David sir in Mumbai, I wasn’t sure if I was in contention but by our second meeting, we had mutually agreed on the film and I was given an idea of the script, my scenes and my look. David sir had a particular look in mind and we experimented with my hair, clothes and styling. Our third meeting was in the city for the shoot.I was super excited because I was going to be speaking in my mother tongue on camera for the first time. Since I was entering the Hindi film industry, it took longer than the usual time to get ready as I was being extra cautious. Even after I was all prepped up, there was a long wait as I had to enter the scene at a certain point, Ali (Zafar), Divyenndu and Siddharth who played Siddharth, Omi and Jai respectively, were done with their lines. I think the scene came before the interval and I had just one short dialogue. I was already nervous and as I waited for my turn, my anxiety escalated. I have no clear memory of my first shot even though I remember everything that happened before and after it. I don’t usually look at the monitor, but on that day, the team insisted I check out my performance, hoping it would calm my nerves.
My family doesn’t usually accompany me on a film set either. I am an extrovert and the unit becomes my extended family. In this case as well, I went out of my way to be comfortable with everyone and vice versa. This, over the years, I’ve realised is the only way to remain sane and happy at work.
It took some time for it to sink in that I was actually doing a Hindi film because I had just stumbled upon the offer. So initially, though I was speaking my lines in Hindi, I was performing like it was a Tamil or a Telugu film. The approach is the same, but then, I told myself that this being my language, I could do much more with the scenes and slowly started to improvise, adding personal touches and giving unscripted reactions during the filming.
I think Chashme Baddoor was the perfect Bollywood launch for me. Had I started out with a film like Baby I would have landed up with only small supporting roles while a Pink would have typecast me as a serious and off-beat actress. My debut Hindi film was fun yet conveyed to everyone that I can act and fit in both worlds.

Ali Zafar on his film earning three nods at Jackie Chan Film Week
Mohar Basu (MID-DAY; July 31, 2019)
After earning critical acclaim following its six-month run in cinema halls, Ali Zafar's debut production, the Pakistani film Teefa In Trouble, has been nominated for three titles at the ongoing Jackie Chan Action Film Week in China. Teefa In Trouble has been nominated in the festival's categories, including Best Action, Best Director [Ahsan Rahim] and Best Actor.
Zafar tells mid-day from China, "I was told that the response of the jury and the audience was fantastic. I met some of the jury members after the event and they were all praise for the film. This is the first time that a Pakistani film has been nominated on such a big scale. The fact, for it to be nominated in the top 10 action films category is an honour; we were up against 152 films from 32 countries."
While the film is available in India on Netflix, a China release, Zafar says, is in the pipeline. Meanwhile, he suggests that he continues to receive good wishes from his fans in India. "Their messages are heart-warming."

Ali Zafar talks about Teefa In Trouble dropping on streaming giant in India while Pakistani films rarely make it here
Mohar Basu (MID-DAY; December 6, 2018)
While India continues to maintain a distance from Pakistani films, actor Ali Zafar is grateful that his latest offering, Teefa In Trouble, has released on Netflix India over the weekend. The action comedy had reportedly hit screens across 25 countries upon its release in July. Glad that his first Pakistani film can be viewed by fans across the border, Zafar says, "India will never be far. The love and admiration I have received, and keep receiving from there will always be close to my heart."
Having made his Bollywood debut with Tere Bin Laden in 2010, the actor-singer had garnered a fan following with outings that included Mere Brother Ki Dulhan (2011) and Chashme Buddoor (2013). He hopes the latest action comedy — that also sees him as the co-producer and writer — too finds takers in his Indian fan base. "My social media team is quite thrilled with the fan mail and online comments that have come their way since the film's release. I think Indian audiences respond positively to good content, and they will find Teefa entertaining."
The joy of rekindling his romance with Indian fans aside, Zafar points out that the release of films on the digital platform bears social significance as well, especially in the current political climate. "Moving to OTT has revolutionised how content and cultures can be seen, experienced and shared. More importantly, it is brave and keeps entertainment free from politics."

His production Teefa In Trouble marking an association with Yash Raj Films, Ali Zafar on cultural exchanges between India and Pakistan
Usman Ghafoor (MID-DAY; July 23, 2018)
Stating that he's "always in pursuit of wisdom," Ali Zafar effortlessly quotes the likes of Rumi and Bulleh Shah, whose words have been guiding lights for many. Unshaken after a controversy of sexual harassment involving him shook the Pakistan entertainment industry, Zafar, in an exclusive chat with mid-day, says "Truth shall prevail eventually."
His first home production, Teefa In Trouble, which released last Friday, marks "a historic partnership" with Yash Raj Films. He discusses what collaborations across the border signify.
How did the collaboration with Yash Raj Films come about?
When I was working with them, I shared a [rapport] with Aditya Chopra. We'd often discuss cinema. He's an inspiring person. While working on Teefa In Trouble, I told him I wanted his company to release the film. He was forthcoming. Eventually, I showed the final cut to their international team in London. They said it was going to be a game-changer for Pakistani cinema.
The film has been released in 25 countries across the globe - a first for a Pakistani feature. We are exploring new territories like Russia, Kenya, Tanzania, Zambia, Fiji, Poland and Indonesia. We are going to dub or add sub titles so that it can be watched by non-Urdu and non-Hindi speaking audiences too.
You invited your Kill Dil director Shaad Ali to attend Teefa In Trouble's music launch in Lahore. Are you in touch with your former colleagues in Bollywood?
Yes, I am. In the film, there's also a surprise appearance, if I may call it so, by Ranveer Singh.
Can you talk about the music?
The music has been created to suit the film's varied emotional palette. This was challenging, because I was making music after a long time. We tried to make it sound appealing for the big screen. Also, the songs are catchy. I'm glad that Chan Ve has crossed 8 million views on YouTube.
How was it to work on Dear Zindagi?
I am not sure how many people know this, but my scenes had been shot and we were ready to start promotions when relations between India and Pakistan soured. So, my portions were re-shot with another actor. But, Shah Rukh [Khan] and Gauri [Khan] stood up for me. I had a great time working with them.
Will you take your association with YRF forward, co-producing films with Indian companies?
I have always maintained that co-productions should happen; they'll do wonders for both countries. I stand with those who favour peace and collaborations.
Your brother was supposed to debut in a YRF production.
Yes, it was about to go on floors. [But] there is only so much that you can do; you can't alter God's plans.
Talking about the controversy you found yourself in with singer Meesha Shafi, do you believe people are harsher to men in sexual harassment allegations?
Unfortunately, instead of doing research, we followed trends and hashtags. We think that if we join in [the voices on social media], we'll become cool. We shouldn't see things in binaries.
What are your views on social-media propelled feminist movements like #MeToo?
Everything boils down to intention. The movement has a certain sanctity that must be maintained. People are intelligent enough to understand things. Truth does prevail. I have taken the course of law; things shall become clear in time.
Actor-singer Ali Zafar files Rs 1 billion defamation suit against Meesha Shafi

BOMBAY TIMES (June 25, 2018)
Actor-singer Ali Zafar has filed a defamation suit in a district court in Pakistan against singer Meesha Shafi, who accused him of sexual harassment two months ago. The suit claims damages of Rs 1 billion. Zafar has said in the notice that Shafi had caused “tremendous injury” to his “reputation, goodwill, livelihood” through “false, slanderous and defamatory” allegations. The suit reads, “As the defamatory statements are patently false, it can only be concluded that this malicious campaign has been launched against the plaintiff as part of a motivated conspiracy to tarnish the plaintiff ’s good image through making false accusations. The defendant has associated herself with the global #MeToo movement, with one of the launchers of the #MeToo movement Rose McGowan labelling the defendant as ‘a heroine for our times’.”Earlier, Shafi had confirmed she had received a legal notice sent by Zafar’s counsel, asking the actor-singer to delete her tweet alleging harassment and to issue an apology on Twitter, failing which he would file a Rs 1 billion defamation case against her. It was in April that Shafi took to Twitter to publicly accuse Zafar of physically harassing her on “more than one occasion”. Ali had denied the allegations, saying he would take legal action.

Twitter goes into Throwback Thursday mode after Pakistani singer-actor Meesha Shafi accuses Ali Zafar of sexual harassment. The allegation has divided the Pakistani showbiz industry, with voices speaking out both in support of and against Zafar
BOMBAY TIMES (April 21, 2018)
Within hours of Pakistani singer-actor Meesha Shafi accusing compatriot singer-actor Ali Zafar of sexual harassment, many from the country’s showbiz industry have spoken up on the issue. On Thursday, Shafi claimed that Zafar sexually harassed her multiple times. Detailing the experience in a note on Twitter, she wrote, “Sharing this because I believe that by speaking out about my own experience of sexual harassment, I will break the culture of silence that permeates through our society. It is not easy to speak out… but it is harder to stay silent. My conscience will not allow it anymore.” Within a few hours, in a note of his own, Zafar “categorically” denied “any and all claims of harassment lodged” against him by Shafi. “I am aware and in support of the global #MeToo movement and what it stands for. I am the father of a young girl and a young boy, a husband to a wife and a son to a mother. I am a man who has stood up for myself, my family, my colleagues and friends countless times in the face of slander, defamation and general unkindness. I will do the same today,” he wrote, adding, “I intend to take this through the courts of law and to address this professionally and seriously, rather than to lodge any allegations here, contesting personal vendettas on social media and in turn disrespecting the movement, my family, the industry and my fans. Ultimately, I am a strong believer that the truth always prevails.”The accusation and the denial soon resulted in a Tweetstorm. Several Pakistani artistes also commented on the issue. Sharing Zafar’s note, Pakistani actor Maya Ali came to her Teefa In Trouble co-star’s defence. “I’m not here to say who is wrong and who is right or who did what and who didn’t… Let’s say, I haven’t known him for long, but I have been working with him since 1 year, we shot our film in Lahore and then we were all together in Poland to shoot the rest of the film and I never ever got any kind of that vibe from him… I always found him talking to his wife and kids on FaceTime...,” she wrote, “I am not judging anyone nor giving any clarification on anyone’s behalf, and we can’t judge the one side of a book… I respect this man and want the truth to come out until then we shouldn’t judge anyone’s character.” (sic) Taking Shafi’s side in the debate, Pakistani actor-writer Osman Khalid Butt wrote, “A woman breaks her silence about abuse, withstands character assassination and further abuse on social media, her story turns into memes and tone-deaf jokes that trivialise the issue, she fears ostracisation — but suuuuure, she did it for the cheap publicity.” Urwa Hocane, a Pakistani VJ and actress, also supported the 36-year old mother of two, and tweeted, “More power to you! Meesha Shafi.”
On the other hand, singer-songwriter Fakhar-E-Alam wrote, “Idiots who are thinking I am by any means dismissing allegations or taking sides, need to know I am in shock and I find no amusement in this situation. But cuz I know both Ali Zafar and Meesha Shafi I am just hoping this is a bad misunderstanding & if true must be consequential.”
After Meesha Shafi, more women accuse Ali Zafar of sexual harassment

MID-DAY (April 21, 2018)
After Pakistani actress-model-singer accused actor Ali Zafar of sexual harassment -- a claim he has denied -- more women have come forward with similar allegations. The women, while lending support Shafi, tweeted saying she was not alone and they had faced similar experiences, reported Geo News. Make-up artist Leena Ghani thanked Shafi for being brave enough to speak out.
"Seeing Meesha's courage it's impossible for me to not speak now, not only in support of her but also to say she's not alone. In the many years I have known Ali, he has on several occasions crossed boundaries of what is appropriate behaviour between friends," Ghani wrote. She elucidated on how Ali's behaviour displays a "clear lack of respect for women". "Inappropriate contact, groping, sexual comments should not fall in the grey area between humour and indecency. Comments that would make your skin crawl and make you feel objectified are not to be reduced to 'a joke' as such behaviours can leave women feeling embarrassed, small and reduced to the level of entertainment at the hands of a woman.
"In such cases, women like myself run from a situation and hope to God you never cross paths again. And when by some misfortune you do, you hide from him. Hoping that his sleazy eyes and hands don't find you again. His hands don't make their way up and down your waist or hold you too tight while you desperately try to wiggle and run," Ghani wrote. Ghani said Shafi "isn't and has not been alone". "The memories of the times when Ali thought he could get away by saying vulgar things still disgust me," she added.
A journalist named Maham Javaid described an incident from "many many years ago" when Ali tried to kiss her cousin and pull her into a restroom with him. The journalist thanked Shafi for "reminding us that our stories matter". Blogger Humna Raza also recounted when he inappropriately touched her at a public event.
On Thursday evening, Shafi sparked Pakistan's #MeToo moment when she took to Twitter to allege Ali had sexually harassed her on more than one occasion. This is the first incident of a Pakistani celebrity speaking out about a colleague. However, Ali on Thursday denied Shafi's claim, saying he will take this allegation through the courts of law. "I am a strong believer that the truth always prevails," he tweeted.
Although Pakistan's entertainment industry has remained largely mum on the issue, actor-writer Osman Khalid Butt and model-actress Urwa Hocane have tweeted in support of Shafi, reported Geo News. Meanwhile, actor Maya Ali posted on Instagram saying she respects Ali and "we shouldn't judge anyone's character" until the truth comes out.

The actor-singer responds by putting out a statement denying allegations; says he intends to ‘take it through the courts of law’
Nishi Tiwari (MUMBAI MIRROR; April 20, 2018)
"I used to love Ali Zafar until ten minutes ago,” a Twitter user in Pakistan posted a few hours after the renowned Meesha Shafi accused equally famous actor-singer and colleague Ali Zafar of sexual harassment on the site.
“Sharing this because I believe by speaking out about my own experience of sexual harassment, I will break the culture of silence that permeates through our society. It is not easy to speak out but it is harder to stay silent. My conscience will not allow it anymore,” the 36-year-old mother-of-two revealed on Thursday, appending with it a note that read, “I have been, on more than one occasion, subjected to sexual harassment of physical nature at the hands of a colleague from my industry: Ali Zafar. These incidences didn’t happen when I was younger, or entering the industry. This happened to me despite the fact that I am an empowered, accomplished woman who is known to speak her mind... a mother of two children.”
After telling Pakistan’s Dunya TV at 6 pm, “I don’t want to speak on the matter,” Zafar, 37, put out a statement at 7.30 pm: “I am a man who has stood up for myself, my family, my colleagues and friends countless times in the face of slander, defamation and general unkindness. I will do the same today. I have nothing to hide. Silence is absolutely not an option. I categorically deny any and all claims of harassment lodged against me by Ms Shafi. I intend to take this through the courts of law.”Sharing this because I believe that by speaking out about my own experience of sexual harassment, I will break the culture of silence that permeates through our society. In a classic case of old celeb tweets returning like bad karma, Twitter users went into overdrive, retweeting Zafar’s old posts exalting women and advocating gender equality, offset by others that reflected misogynistic undertones. Karachi-based journalist Omar R Quraishi, who clapped back to a tweet from Zafar dated July, 19, 2011 — “Liberty for women to watch topless men on the Lahore canal, however depriving men of the same. (Can’t believe I tweeted that),” with, “You shouldn’t have”, says this is just the tip of the iceberg.
“I’d expect more names to follow because sexual harassment is quite prevalent in Pakistan’s fashion and film/TV industry. Male models have also been victims,” he tells Mirror.
In the wake of Zafar’s restrained denial of the accusations, the scales have considerably tipped in his favour, at least online. While some noted that it is his word against hers, Zafar loyalists refused to believe that there could be even an iota of truth in Shafi’s claims.
Zafar hit pay dirt as a pop/rock musician in 2003 in his home country with the song “Channo”, from his debut album, Huqa Paani, which sold five million copies worldwide. In the years to follow, his fame crossed borders, paving way for a Bollywood debut in 2010 with Tere Bin Laden, which opened to moderate critical and commercial success, facilitating projects like Mere Brother Ki Dulhan (2011) opposite A-listers Katrina Kaif and Imran Khan, London, Paris, New York, Chashme Baddoor and more recently, the Alia Bhatt-starrer Dear Zindagi.
Zafar worked in a hotel lobby as a sketch artist, where he met his wife, Ayesha Fazli, and the couple wed in 2009. Their son Azaan was born in 2010 and daughter Alyza in 2015. Zafar reportedly has a no-kissing clause in his contract and the makers of London, Paris... had to use a body double for a sequence.
Since Shafi closed her note with the ‘me too’ hashtag, would it be too far off the mark to call this a watershed moment in Pakistani showbiz given both Shafi and Zafar’s celebrity status? “It’s not often that you see a big celebrity name accuse another celebrity of sexual harassment — and that too in Pakistan. Meesha Shafi must have thought carefully about the consequences of her going public, particularly to her own career as well and her own reputation since women who do something like this in Pakistani society are often judged harshly,” Quraishi points out.

There's more love than hatred between Indians & Pakistanis-Ali Zafar

In an exclusive chat, Pakistani actor-musician Ali Zafar says he is optimistic that relations between India and Pakistan will improve
Soumya Vajpayee Tiwari (MID-DAY; January 24, 2017)
Since the September 2016 Uri attacks, relations between India and Pakistan have been far from cordial. The turmoil also resulted in the boycott of Pakistani artistes in India.
In fact, radical groups in the country protested against the release of Shah Rukh Khan-starrer 'Dear Zindagi' last year, because it featured Pakistani actor-musician Ali Zafar.
While the conditions remain the same on the diplomatic front, the artistes from both the countries are hopeful for a happier tomorrow. And one among them is Zafar.
In an exclusive chat with hitlist from Pakistan, the singer said, "I feel that India and Pakistan have seen ups and downs over the years. But, we have somehow always managed to come back together. I feel there is more love than hatred between the people of the two countries. Inshallah, one day, we will have a peaceful co-existence again, where we'll have a smooth exchange of art and culture between India and Pakistan," says Ali.
With no upcoming project in India, the actor-musician is focusing on domestic projects. He is excited about his upcoming Pakistani movie. "I have been engrossed with work here in Pakistan. My next feature film, Teefa In Trouble, is keeping me busy. It will go on floors by mid-February. It's an action comedy. I am also working on the music of the movie," says Ali.
On the music front, Zafar is working on a new album. "It will release later this year. I have also sung the anthem for the Pakistan Super League, and I have to perform it in Dubai on February 9."

National Award-winning composer discusses the noble cause he wants to associate with, and how Bollywood music is evolving
Soumya Vajpayee Tiwari (MID-DAY; January 22, 2017)
He started working on the soundtracks of Aamir and Dev D in 2007. Now that he is in his10th year in Bollywood, composer Amit Trivedi is finally taking time out for independent music. He is part of The Dewarists, in which he has worked on a song, Panchiyaa, which also features celebrated kanjeera player V Selvaganesh (see pic from the song below). Amit says he wants to explore the independent music space more and that he has started work on a new single as well. When we caught up with him at his Andheri studio, the composer got candid about his dreams, the noble cause he wants to associate with, actors turning singers, and more.
Your music is lauded for its uniqueness. What makes your work stand out? This is how I am and this is the only way I know of doing music.
Only when people titled my music ‘unique’, I realised that’s the label for my work. Even when I was working on the music of Dev D, I was just following my natural instincts. But, when the album released, I got to hear things like, “You are unique” or “you are the next A R Rahman”. I’ve never had a Godfather. I am my own guide.
Bollywood music usually limits composers’ freedom. Do you feel claustrophobic?
See, there are limitations in film music because the producer puts in money and the director has some vision, which is fair. So as a composer, you have to work things around their wishes. However, the fact that the line between mainstream commercial films and alternate cinema is blurring gives me a lot of confidence as a music maker. So while there are films like Ae Dil Hai Mushkil, Dangal and Sultan, movies like Dear Zindagi, Udta Punjab and Secret Superstar are also being made. The scripts of these films are not your regular, masala potboilers. For me, it’s good because I feel I started out with alternate films like Dev D, Aamir and Udaan. I’m glad I started with filmmakers who wanted to make offbeat films to help Bollywood evolve. I’m proud to be part of this transformation.
Your last three soundtracks — Udta Punjab, Fitoor and Dear Zindagi were hits. Which one did you enjoy the most?
Working on Udta Punjab was a lot of fun. It was the first time I was working with Abhishek Chaubey (director) and I was amazed by his energy. Udta Punjab was a result of the fresh energies we exchanged. He is so clear about his vision. I love people like that. He helped me explore a new side of myself. I’d never got into the dark, trance or hip-hop zone earlier. So stepping into a new territory was amazing.
Nowadays, film soundtracks feature tracks by multiple composers. Are you comfortable with that trend?
I can never work like that. Ek gaana le lo, do gaane le lo main nahin kar sakta. I am capable enough to deliver an entire soundtrack and I have been doing that for so many years. Why will I then do one-off tracks?
We’ve heard you are working on the music of Manmarziyan. Tell us about that and your other projects.
I am waiting to hear from the makers. I’ve also worked on another movie, called Rukh. It features Manoj Bajpayee. The soundtrack of that is very different.
Tell us about the music for Secret Superstar.
I have never had so much fun working on any soundtrack. It’s been so much fun to work on the film with Aamir (Khan). I love the way he gets deep into music making. He was there for the making of the entire soundtrack of the film and his opinions were so helpful for me.
What’s your take on actors turning singing?
I love it. As long as they are singing well, it’s great. Diljit Dosanjh, Shraddha Kapoor, Ali Zafar and Alia Bhatt are great. Alia is good, but I’ve told her that she can get much better if she practices more. Working with Ali on Taarifon Se and Tu Hi Hai for Dear Zindagi was a treat.
Is there a noble cause you would want to associate with?
I wish to uplift and give opportunities to the physically disabled people, who are talented musicians. I want to give them the platform to showcase their skills. That would give me a lot of contentment.
Earlier, it used to be very difficult to get in touch with you for interviews.
I used to be shy and reserved. I am glad things have eased out now. People would say, “We love Amit Trivedi’s music, but we don’t know anything about him.” I’d got so many offers to judge reality shows and to feature on screen, but I preferred staying away. But now I am more comfortable. I am trying to be more media savvy now.
Ranbir Kapoor couldn’t be cooler. He is not a brand snob-Kazim Delhiwala & Priyanka Shahani

A psychology graduate and trained pilot are attracting the attention of Bollywood’s ‘boys’ with their Bemberg-ined suits
Shweta Sheware (MID-DAY; November 27, 2016)
They won’t divulge their age. Instead, they will regale you with stories about the “boys” from Bollywood. When you dress a star for a public sighting, you tend to learn more than if he picks brogues over moccasins. So, we learn that Ranbir Kapoor is not into brands. He will wear what you give him, and carry it off too.
“Ranbir couldn’t be cooler. There were times when we wondered, will he wear this? Well, he did actually wear everything we gave him. He is not a brand snob,” says Kazim Delhiwala. Kazim is one half of Vainglorious, a stylist service he runs with wife Priyanka Shahani. They are impatient and greedy to fatten their roster of famous, although they’ve already ticked off Emraan Hashmi, Aditya Roy Kapoor, Sushant Singh Rajput and Tiger Shroff on it. Their firm introduces shoppers, including the famous, to international labels that you don’t find online. A lot of the names include personal favourites, stores the two have visited on trips and loved. “We got into styling with the promise that we would contribute something that wasn’t already there. We study the star or client’s personality closely, consider how he would dress himself. It shouldn’t look like he has walked out of a magazine shoot, or that he went to a store and it exploded on him. It should be honest, organic,” says Kazim when Priyanka jumps in, “… and just a little more glamorous”.
The couple met in 2000, and married three years ago. Their collective non-fashion background (Priyanka majored in psychology and heads a family-run film studio in Mahim; Kazim is a trained pilot) has allowed them a fresh perspective on stale men’s fashion in India. “Often, men are forced to be ashamed of dressing up. So, you see a guy in a suit with a shirt that’s not tucked in. They wish to say, I don’t dress up. We needed to fix that. We needed men to look pretty too.”
Their own dress sense is as much a head- turner as their work. Famed American blogger-photographer Scott Schuman’s The Sartorialist has documented their style. “Imagine my surprise when Scott tapped me on the shoulder and asked to photograph me while I was strolling in Marais, Paris, this June,” Kazim says excitedly.
But, it’s dressing Hindi film stars for movie promotions and celebrity events that has got them maximum attention. The pair dipped their toes into water with actor Ali Zafar while he was promoting the 2015 Aditya Chopra production, Kill Dil. “It was a time when we were trying to figure how the industry works, whether it would be exciting for us to get involved, and not be left creatively stifled by its demands,” Priyanka shares.
Their first formal assignment was with Emraan Hashmi during promotions for Ungli. But, it was Ranbir’s sartorial choices while promoting his last release, Ae Dil Hai Mushkil that had people sit up and take notice. “We pride ourselves in working with smaller fashion houses. We are fabric, fit and technique geeks, so when we travel abroad, we visit stores and discuss the philosophy behind the design process, which makes the brand believe in our values,” says Kazim. “That’s how we make connections. Shopping for ourselves helps, of course,” Priyanka laughs.
Headlining their list of favourites is Paris-based design collective Vetements pronounced vet-MAHN; French for ‘clothes’) headed by Demna Gvasalia and his group of faceless, mysterious collaborators, and Californian designer Rick Owens. “I am obsessed with Rick’s grungy-glamorous aesthetic! Saint Laurent is very particular. Their ready- towear is available only when our actors travel to Dubai. In India, however, it’s only shoes. Tom Ford is very picky about whom they work with, but they like our Bollywood actors,” Kazim adds.
They dressed up Ranbir in a Tom Ford turtleneck shirt, jacket and trousers for his appearance on Koffee with Karan. “We have been lucky with actors, but I would like to style women,” Priyanka drops a hint.
For now, they are immersed in styling actors for their public appearances, and a movie commitment seems premature. “Unless they make an Aisha for men! If the script is centered on a middle-class hero, we won’t be able to contribute,” Kazim says with certainty. “It would be a mere money grab, not creatively satisfying for us.”

The actor has been shooting with Harry Potter star Michael Gambon for his new international project after Furious 7
Natasha Coutinho (MUMBAI MIRROR; November 10, 2016)
Interestingly, Ali is not a Potterhead and has not watched a single film from the series but adores Gambon from way before he played Dumbledore. “An 80-yearold actor has more stamina than 70 percent of the cast and crew. It's amazing,“ he signed off with awe.
Meanwhile the Hogwarts headmaster will make an appearance in the second part of the Harry Potter spin-off, Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them. The search is on for someone to play the younger version of Dumbledore, while Eddie Redmayne plays the lead as magizoologist Newt Scamander. “In the second movie, Dumbledore comes back. He's got a couple of good scenes with Newt.W e're discussing who would play Dumbledore,“ said director David Yates.

The actor wrapped up a music video for Gauri Shinde’s next directorial in Mumbai on Tuesday
Natasha Coutinho (MUMBAI MIRROR; November 3, 2016)
Mirror had earlier reported (April 4) that Pakistani actor-musician Ali Zafar plays one of Alia Bhatt’s four lovers – a brooding rockstar who is as passionate about love as he is about music – in Gauri Shinde’s Dear Zindagi. Now, in the wake of the controversy surrounding Pakistani actors’ presence in India following the Uri attacks on September 18 and the subsequent surgical strikes carried out by India in Pak territory, we hear that Tahir Raj Bhasin may be stepped in for Zafar. Buzz is, the actor who plays the antagonist in Force 2 has already wrapped up a music video with Alia on Tuesday in a Mumbai studio.
A source close to the development informed Mirror, “Tahir was roped in after the Ae Dil Hai Mushkil controversy when Karan Johar had to go through a lot of problems because of the presence of Pakistani actors Fawad Khan and Imran Abbas in the film even though both had just guest appearances.”
However, sources from the film’s team insists that Tahir is not a replacement for Ali.
“He has been roped in for a promotional music video for which Alia flew down especially from Singapore where she is currently filming Badrinath Ki Dulhaniya. It was a last-minute call.”
The coming-of-age film features Alia as a cinematographer who discovers herself through her relationships with Aditya Roy Kapur, Angad Bedi and Kunal Kapoor as the three other men and the King Khan in a cameo as a mentor.
Habib Faisal-YRF's next in jeopardy as it stars Ali Zafar's brother Danyal?

Ali Zafar’s brother’s film debut in jeopardy, family can’t send him to shoot, putting the makers in a tight spot
Mohar Basu (MID-DAY; October 20, 2016)
After prepping over months with five newcomers for his untitled prison drama, filmmaker Habib Faisal is apparently in a fix. Reason? One of the five boys in the movie is a 20-year-old Pakistani, Danyal Zafar, better known as singer-actor Ali Zafar’s brother.
According to sources, following the “hyperbolic reporting around Uri attacks in the social and mainstream media, and a call for a ban against Pakistani artistes by various groups in India, Danyal had to rush out of Mumbai a few weeks ago, and head back to his hometown, Lahore, for the time being.” Given that the situation hasn’t improved since, or is unlikely to anytime soon, sources close to the film’s production say, “Danyal’s family is hugely apprehensive about sending him back to Mumbai now. The filmmakers are also in no position to assert themselves. They can’t guarantee his security either.”
This leaves the film unit with few options, besides remain in limbo. The group of five debutant actors in the film, produced by Yash Raj, had bonded well, and were set to start shoot early November. Danyal had been roped in as the film’s romantic hero.
The only silver lining, says the insider from the filmmaking unit, is that “at least we haven’t begun principal photography yet, unlike in the case of the Fawad Khan-starrer Ae Dil Hai Mushkil, Gauri Shinde’s Dear Zindagi with Ali Zafar in it, or, for that matter, Raees that stars Pakistani actress Mahira Khan, alongside Shah Rukh Khan. There is very little one can do about those movies.”
A unit hand adds, “Habib’s film is about a bunch of convicts who form an in-house rock band in prison. One of the girls is from the North East. Danyal, who is known to have a flair for rock music, is a guitar player, and a fine singer as well. At this point, Habib is unsure about what his next move should be. It is rather late in the day to look for a replacement. It will be difficult to find another actor who fits the part so well. The film’s first schedule was supposed to kick-start in Jabalpur (Madhya Pradesh).”
Is Ali Zafar ousted from Dear Zindagi trailer? Gauri Shinde sets the record straight

Gauri Shinde on the Dear Zindagi trailer being scrapped; to go ahead with four teasers instead
Mohar Basu (MID-DAY; October 19, 2016)
In the report ‘Ali goes missing’, hitlist was the first to tell you how Pakistani singer-actor Ali Zafar won’t be included in the trailer of Dear Zindagi. A source close to him in Pakistan had also confirmed the news. Now, the film’s director Gauri Shinde has revealed that plans of a trailer have been dropped; they will release a series of teasers instead. The first one will be unveiled today.
Says Gauri, “We have decided not to take the conventional route for this movie. We will release small videos titled Dear Zindagi take 1, take 2, take 3, and so on. I am not too sure if it can be called a new marketing strategy, but the idea is to invite the viewer bit by bit into the experience of the film.”
The director credits SRK also a co-producer of the film, for the novel idea. “It was Shah Rukh’s suggestion and I was with him on that. Some believe that trailers should clearly tell viewers the story of the film, but I feel any promotion should make them want to watch the film in the theatre to find out what it is all about. Knowing it all kills the magic of cinema,” she adds.
The film revolves around Kaira, a budding cinematographer in search of a perfect life. A chance encounter helps her gain new perspective, as she discovers that happiness is all about finding comfort in life’s imperfections. The film also stars Kunal Kapoor, Angad Bedi and Aditya Roy Kapur alongside Alia Bhatt, who will play the lead role.

Pak singer-actor doesn't feature in Dear Zindagi trailer. Will he be dropped from the film altogether?
Mohar Basu (MID-DAY; October 18, 2016)
Even as the fate of Karan Johar's 'Ae Dil Hai Mushkil' (ADHM) hangs in balance, the filmmaker has decided to play it safe for his upcoming co-production, Dear Zindagi. The film stars Shah Rukh Khan, Alia Bhatt and Ali Zafar, but the Pakistani singer-actor will not feature in the trailer to be attached to ADHM.
The development comes amid the tension surrounding the release of films featuring Pak actors, and speculations are rife that Zafar's role may eventually be snipped.
However, an industry insider informs, "Ali is not part of the trailer, but chopping off his role completely isn't possible since he is crucial to the narration. His fate will be decided after the release of ADHM."
While Ali remained unavailable for comment, a source close to him confirms he was informed by the makers about not being included in the trailer. "These are unfortunate circumstances. He has no option but to make peace with it," adds the source.
Rumour mills have also been abuzz that the makers are scouting for a young composer to create a special song, possibly as an alternative to Zafar's two songs in the movie also starring Aditya Roy Kapur, Kunal Kapoor and Angad Bedi.
Director Gauri Shinde, who is busy with post-production of Dear Zindagi, chose not to respond. Dharma sources confirm the cast has been asked to stay mum.
Now, reports of the film missing its November 25 release also abound. The film's spokesperson, however, says, "Dear Zindagi is on schedule. The film is in post production."
Pakistani actor ban row: Filmmakers lie low and put their projects on the backburner

Shaheen Parkar (MID-DAY; October 9, 2016)
From being a screen scorcher, Fawad Khan has now become the whipping boy for anything to do with things across the border. His appearance (said to be an extended cameo) in Karan Johar’s upcoming film, Ae Dil Hai Mushkil has divided the industry, stirred nationwide debates and put the country’s security at stake. So is also is Mahira Khan’s presence in the SRKstarrer, Raees. KJo’s film also stars another import from across the border — Imran Abbas — who made his B-Town debut in the Bipasha Basu-starrer Creature A D. He has also done a cameo in the Diwali release.
Singer-actor Ali Zafar features in Gauri Shinde’s Dear Zindagi starring Alia Bhatt and Shah Rukh Khan. The film is slated to release next month. There is also the Irrfan-starrer with Pakistani import Saba Qamar on the floors.
Considering the present Indo-Pak scenario and the resultant ban imposed on Pakistani talent, several Bollywood projects either have been kept in limbo or put on the backburner. Or the filmmakers prefer to remain mum about their projects.
Katrina Kaif was to team up with Fawad in Raat Baaki, the directorial debut of Aditya Dhar. The film, produced by KJo, was slated to go on floor in November. A love story set in New Delhi, the film was supposed to be Kat’s next venture. There is no sign of it taking off now.
During her interactions for her last release, Baar Baar Dekho, Kat had said, Let’s wait for the makers to announce it.” Singer-actor Ali Zafar’s brother Danyal was to make his B-Town debut in Habib Faisal’s next with Yash Raj. Danyal has already started prep for the youth-centric film. As YRF prefer to keep things under wrap, there is no word on the final casting.
Saket Chaudhary's film Hindi Medium starring Irrfan and Pakistani import, Saba Qamar is another project to face the heat. The romantic comedy is about a typical couple from Chandni Chowk, who aspire to move into New Delhi’s happening circles.
Rahat Fateh Ali Khan has rendered two tracks, Aye Mere Khuda and Ek Tera Saath in Arshad Siddiqui’s horror film, Ek Tera Saath — 1:13:7 which features telly actors Ssharad Malhotra and Hritu Dudani. So, what are the makers planning to do now? Replace the actors or put it on the backbuner.
Considering the controversy-riddled atmosphere, no filmmaker is in a quote mood and trigger another controversy. The Irrfan Saba starrer had a stint of shooting in Delhi recently. A unit source says, “The film has already wrapped up. The makers prefer to keep mum about their project for now.”
Ek Tera Saath — 1:13:7 director Arshad Siddique, “Yes, we have two songs of Rahat Fateh Ali Khan in our film. These songs were recorded in 2014 and at that time there were no such issues. We support our country and if this problem had arisen before we definitely wouldn’t have recorded it.”
While wrapping up Ae Dil Hai Mushkil’s shoot, Imran had posted on Facebook, “Last day at the shoot in Mumbai. Truly thankful to Karan Johar for everything, Anushka Sharma and Lisa Haydon for being wonderful co-actors on set. And last but not the least, I must admire Ranbir Kapoor for making things so easier for me and being there like a great friend all through out.”
Wonder what is on Imran’s mind now?
We requested Pakistani artistes to condemn Uri without naming Pakistan but they all refused-Subhash Chandra

Divya Kaushik (BOMBAY TIMES; September 30, 2016)
While the idea of the press meet was to have a discussion on the channel's new lineup of Indian and Turkish shows and introduce the shows' artistes, the discussion took a different turn with Chandra insisting that Pakistani artistes should have condemned the Uri attack. And as the actors, writers and producers of the new shows, who came from other cities to attend the event, sat silently on stage, the discussion was led by Chandra and Anupam Kher, who is a producer of one of the shows which will now air on the channel.
PAK ACTORS SHOULD CONDEMN THE TERROR ACT: ANUPAM KHER
Kher added, “I am friends with some of these actors, I am following them on Instagram and I like these actors. People who have made films, I feel their films should release, producers have invested so much money, but it is important to talk about it. Make us feel that we have given you so much, you can at least do lip service and say I am sorry for your pain and I condemn this act of terrorism.“
THE DECISION TO NOT HAVE PAKISTANI SHOWS WAS TAKEN A DAY AFTER URI ATTACK: SUBHASH CHANDRA
Claiming that the channel is boycotting Pakistani shows to take a stand against what happened in Uri, Chandra said, “Maine pehle bhi kaha hai ki pyaar ek tarfa nahi ho sakta. Humne prayaas kiye ki Hindustan aur Pakistan ke logon ko mila sakein. The government gave permission, the audience gave appreciation, Pakistan ke artistes humare yahan popular hue, lekin woh baar baar hi ulta-seedha karte ja rahe hain - Pathankot kiya, Uri kiya. Ladai karna hai toh saamne karke maaro, lekin soye hue aadmi ko maaroge toh kaise chalega? So we decided that Pakistan ke shows hum band kar denge.“
He added, “Abhi hamare paas Pakistan ke lagbhag 3000 ghante ke shows hain joh humne khareede hue hain - lagbhag Rs 60 crore ka samaan hai. Par humne decide kiya ki humare liye Rs 60 crore important nahi hai, desh ka pride important hai. People say that Pakistani shows were the USP of our channel, because of the scripts, the acting. We have learnt this from them, aur uske liye main unn logon ki kadr karta hun. Aur badle mein humne unko do saal mein Rs 200-250 crore diye hain, joh seekha hai uska price pay kiya hai.“
'PAKISTANI ARTISTES SHOULD CONDEMN TERRORISM'
Naming artistes like Fawad Khan, Mahira Khan, Ali Zafar and Shafqat Amanat Ali, Chandra said that he had requested them to condemn the act of terror. “Around nine Pakistani artistes are working here, out of those six people are what they are because of our channel. Ali Zafar, Fawad Khan, Mahira Khan, Veena Malika, Imran Abbas, Shafqat Amanat Ali, in sabko humne phone kiya, sabko humne request ki, ki aap kuch mat kariye, bas yeh hi kahiye ki jo terroist attack raat ko sote hue logon par kiya gaya hai, we condemn that, don't even name Pakistan. Even then they don't want to talk about it. Let them entertain their own people. Children of our country are paying a price. Can you ask the mother of a person who died while sleeping, 'Let us keep art out of this'? Take her answer and then look at it. For how long you will keep art away from this?“ said Chandra.
'THIS BOYCOTT COULD JUST BE TEMPORARY'
Chandra said that the channel may change its stand in the future, depending on future developments. “I am not against any individual. Un nau Pakistani artistes mein se do log abhi Mumbai mein hain, as we speak now, I have invited them on October 2 to my house for dinner. Please don't misunderstand what we say about boycotting; we are boycotting terrorism. That doesn't mean that Nawaz Sharif will not remain my friend. I have been friends with him for 20 years,“ he said, and added that he had had a word with Karan Johar, who has been reportedly receiving threats from MNS for working with Fawad Khan.“Karan Johar ji se jab maine baat ki toh maine unhe aashvasan diya ki chinta mat kariye, aapki film jo complete ho chuki hai, usko release hone denge log, aur agar koi rokega toh main saamne khada hoke aapki film release karaunga, par aage kaam mat kariye aur kya pata humare sambandh theek ho jayen,“ he added.
You can't take your eyes off Alia Bhatt-Angad Bedi

Angad Bedi is one of the Bhatt girl's many lovers in Gauri Shinde's next, has lived his dream of working with the Big B and is playing cricket on screen
Natasha Coutinho (MUMBAI MIRROR; September 1, 2016)
Angad Bedi admits that he
was expected to follow in his famous father, spinner Bishan Singh Bedi's
footsteps and at one point had toyed with the idea of becoming a
cricketer. “If I'd achieved even 10 percent of his success on the field,
my journey would have been considered equally successful. But dramatics
has always been my passion and that's how I strayed into Bollywood,“ he
exults.
The actor has three films - Dear Zindagi, Pink and a web film with Farhan Akhtar and Ritesh Sidhwani--to look forward to. He's all gung-ho about Alia Bhatt whom he romances in Gauri Shinde's next. “You can't take your eyes off the girl, she's amazing, always prepped up, always smiling, always knows her lines and in the right mood for a scene. Her energy is infectious!“ he raves, adding that he plays a restaurateur. “The ideal man.“
Does he get the girl? Angad won't say because he has a lot of reel-life love rivals, including Kunal Kapoor, Ali Zafar, Aditya Roy Kapur and perhaps even Shah Rukh Khan who plays Alia's shrink. “I didn't get to shoot with him but I did spend a day with the other guys and it was good fun. Kunal is sporty and Ali Zafar's music sense is brilliant. Aditya and I used to play cricket together,“ he smiles.
He's equally excited about Pink as it gave him the chance to live out his childhood dream of acting with the Big B. Rajveer is a rich man's son, who doesn't speak much but coming from a feudal set-up has a certain arrogance and looks at women as inferior beings. “He could walk into a restaurant in flip-flops and look expensive. I'm his polar opposite so I was put through a 15-day workshop to get into character before we went on the floors,“ he informs, adding that the 42-day schedule was wrapped up in just 33 days with Amitabh Bachchan treating Tapsee Pannu and him like kids. “He would rehearse with me for four hours before we faced the camera for all the major scenes.“
Apparently, his character is modelled on Ness Wadia, while Richa Chadha plays a Preity Zinta-like character in the web film which revolves around the IPL. Angad denies this categorically, “That's not true. I play a cricketer and the film focuses on the game.“
Buzz is, Angad is dating Baahubali girl Nora Fatehi who is currently a part of a dance reality show. He quips, “Yes, I'm close to Nora, but we're both doing good work and I don't want my name to overshadow her work or vice versa. That's why we've decided to keep things quiet for now.“
