The hitherto smooth-sailing journey of Sooraj
Barjatya’s Prem Ratan Dhan Payo (PRDP) to theatres this Diwali has
encountered rough weather. Apparently, the film’s Telugu version, which
has been titled Prem Leela, has got itself into a spot of trouble, as
the title is not in sync with censorial rules for dubbed films.
Says a source from the censor board, “The title of Prem Ratan Dhan Payo in Telugu is Prem Leela. The two titles mean completely different things. As per guidelines the title of a dubbed film must convey the same meaning as the original title. If not, then the producers must apply for permission to use a different title for the dubbed version of a film. The producers of the film have not applied for permission to use a different title in Telugu.”
At the moment, the Telugu version remains uncertified by the Censor Board due to the discrepancy in the title of the dubbed title. It’s doubtful that the film’s all-Indian release in three languages, Hindi, Tamil and Telugu would be possible unless the title crisis vis-à-vis the Censor Board in Telugu is resolved.
