The Mumbai Cricket
Association (MCA) chose 'Friendship Day'
to end its three year-old feud
with Bollywood actor and IPL team owner Shah Rukh Khan, reports
Gaurav Gupta. In a managing committee meeting on Sunday, the MCA ended
the five-year ban on Khan entering Wankhede Stadium. “It has been three
years since we banned him. Shah Rukh is now most welcome to come and
watch matches at the Wankhede,“ said MCA joint secretary P V Shetty.
Khan was banned in May 2012 following his scuffle and altercation with a security guard and MCA officials after an IPL game in which KKR beat Mumbai Indians. TOI had reported in its August 2 edition that the MCA was in a mood to take this step, which would be a big relief for not just the charismatic Knight Riders co owner and his millions of fans, but also the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and IPL chairman Rajiv Shukla.
There was no reaction from Shah Rukh, but KKR CEO Venky Mysore did express his delight at the news “Pleased to note MCA has lifted the ban on @iamsrk. @KKRiders will be happy to see him cheering in person next time we play at Wankhede!“ Mysore tweeted on Sunday. “It is a good, wise step by the MCA and I thank them for taking it. There was no point in continuing this ban when both the parties had reconciled, and the matter was a closed chapter since it happened three years ago. Shah Rukh is a franchise owner and brings value to the IPL,“ Shukla told TOI.
Recently, Khan had reason to rejoice when his team Trinidad & Tobago Red Steel clinched the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) title. The lifting of the ban would be the icing on the cake for the 49-year-old superstar. Prior to its managing committee meeting on Sunday a certain section in the MCA had wanted the ban to be lifted much earlier since SRK has already served a substantial period `respectfully' without trying to enter the stadium at any stage.
MCA had offered to temporarily lift the ban on Shah Rukh last year, in what was a failed attempt at bringing back the IPL final from Bengaluru. That offer, however, was just for the final.
