New English entertainment
channel, COLORS INFINITY, was launched on Friday (July 31). It
premiered with three back-to-back episodes of internationally-acclaimed
shows Orange Is The New Black, Better Call Saul, Fargo and The Flash,
amongst others. Orange Is The New Black premiered at 9 pm.
The line-up has been co-curated by the mentor student
duo Karan Johar and Alia Bhatt. Excerpts from an interview
with them:
What prompted you to become curators for an English GEC?
Alia: I am too young to judge maybe a reality show on TV, but for this position, my age has become an advantage. There is a wide audience, especially the youth, who watch English shows. They can connect with me as I curate content and become the face of the channel.
Karan: I have been exposed to international content since I was young. I am not doing this out of a commercial deal or endorsement. I felt strongly about the need to show good English content, as we are the world's second largest English-speaking population.
We heard you say that TV won't be the same now? What's unique?
Karan: It's because of the variety of content. It spreads across genres, tapping into new-age modern international television.
How will you garner viewership for the channel?
Karan: We are in the digital age and there is a certain urban resonance and viewership, which I feel the channel is targeting. The channel is aiming at expanding the base of demographics. They not only want to capture the youth, but also want to move to the middle age strata. Much of the new age TV is being watched by urban youth, and expanding that base is what the channel is aiming at.
You and Alia make a great partnership for such projects.
Karan: There is a deep emotional and professional attachment with Alia. The channel wanted a combination of someone seasoned yet someone who thinks with a young mind like me, and Alia who could be iconic for her age group. Our mindsets, the channel thought, could be collaged to create the channel.
Alia: I am lucky that I am getting to work with Karan. He is open to people's opinions and does not force his ideas.
Karan, will you be doing more TV now?
Karan: The small screen has a huge connect; it has helped in my cinema too. TV is the new film. While celluloid has power of visualisation and positioning, the grassroot reality is, TV has many more viewers. I want that connect with viewers and did not want to be left behind. TV has empowered me.
