Given how Indian television soaps portray saas-bahu relationships as being volatile, most people imagine that all mother-in-law and daughter-in-law equations in Bollywood too are fiery and feisty. However, in reality, there are some really cool saas-bahu relationships in the film industry.

Take for example Kajol's equation with her ma-in-law Veena Devgan. It is easily one of the best relationships one can envision. Right now, Kajol is shooting a film with Shah Rukh Khan in Bulgaria. And accompanying her on the outdoor schedule is her mother-in-law, who, her kids - Nysa and Yug - and she fondly refer to as Amma. Kajol knows that she will be busy with her shoot through the day. And she also knows that her kids will be absolutely comfortable in the company of their Amma.

The best saas-bahu equation in Bollywood would still be the one Neetu Kapoor shares with Krishna Kapoor. Whether it is borrowing her kitchen recipes or admiring the way the senior Mrs Kapoor conducts herself, Neetu holds the lady-in-white in complete reverence. She admits, “Not a day goes by without speaking to my mother-in-law.“


Jaya Bachchan is always the first to spring to her daughter-in-law Aishwarya Rai Bachchan's defence. Everyone recalls the famous incident where she put photographers in place for calling out to her bahu as 'Aish Ash' instead of  'waryaji' or 'Mrs Bachchan'. And it's also a known fact that on special occasions like Karva Chauth, Jaya ensures that their 'Bahurani' is always accorded her due.

Sonali Bendre is another actress who treats her mother-in-law Madhu Behl with as much love and affection, as she does her own mother. It is said that Sonali and her ma-in-law enjoy spending girl-time together and if Goldie is a happy man, it's because Sonali has taken to his side of the family like a good daughter-in-law ideally should.

Another daughter-in-law who also refers to her ma-in-law as Amma is Kareena Kapoor Khan. Since Saif calls his mother by that name, Kareena too prefers to call her that. Incidentally, Amma is the Tamil word for mother.

Bebo who respects Sharmila Tagore, like she respects her own mother, Babita, always has something cool to say about her mother-in-law. “I think Amma is a legendary actor and a star,“ she gushes, “And though I've said it countless times, I still maintain that my ma-in-law is the real Begum of Pataudi.“ From going on joint holidays with her in-laws (ma-in-law included) to looking forward to her Delhi trips to spend time with her, Kareena admits she is a huge fan of Sharmila's.
