Right from the first
sequence, director Sriram Raghavan made sure action
director Parvez Fazal Khan gave the leading men of Badlapur a
tough time. Varun Dhawan had to confront a moving truck on the
Mumbai-Pune expressway while Nawazuddin Siddiqui chased down a train in a
car and Vinay Pathak jumped tracks at Khadki railway station. “All the
shooting was done outdoors and stunts were real. And after pack-up,
everyone was bruised but creatively satiated,“ reveals Parvez.
Having assisted the director in his debut film Johnny Gaddaar and later
in Agent Vinod, Parvez knew exactly what Sriram wanted from him - bloody
action that would make the audience cringe. “We entered the kitchen of
Nasik jail and shot there, as well as in the carpentry workshop and the
laundry. The inmates told us about the hidden pillars and
inter-connected getaways and we incorporated all the hide
outs in the shoot,“ he says.
The former stuntman and body double was surprised when Nawaz refused a double for a important flashback sequence. “So we rehearsed and Sriram impersonated Yami Gautam, while DOP Anil Mehta turned into Nawaz and I stepped into the shoes of Varun's son,“ says Khan.
He explains that the sequence required Nawaz to drive a car. Yami sitting behind him grabs a handful of his hair and tugs at it, the pain causing him to lose control. “This was risky business because we had a child actor in the front seat with him,“ reveals Parvez. “Driving zig-zag and superfast, Nawaz zoomed past, with stuntmen dressed as cops in hot pursuit. Real trains and cars whooshed by and inside the car there was a lot of screaming and pushing. Lot of chaos but eventually we got what we wanted.“
Another daring sequence involved Vinay jumping from the platform onto the tracks and racing to the other side while dodging an approaching train. “Since we were shooting at a crowded railway station, we could not time the speed of the train. Sometimes the train was too slow, sometimes superfast. This one time, Vinay almost came within a foot of the train. It took us over 24 hours to get the right shot and by the end of it Vinay's legs were aching from all the running,“ recalls Parvez, adding that the 46-year old actor impressed everyone with his dedication.
Varun plays Raghu, who sets off on the path of vengeance after his wife and son are killed, and had a confrontation scene with Nawaz in which he thrashes him ruthlessly. At the end of it, Nawaz, covered in blood, has a broken jaw but still keep laughing, impervious to the punches. “The actors spent hours studying the action choreography and Varun actually knocked Nawaz out,“ reveals the stunt master.
“Varun to humara pyaara bachcha hai, action bhi bahut mohabbat ke saath karta hai,“ he adds.
Parvez recalls how the actor barged into a bathroom with fire in his eyes: “He picked up a hammer and thrashed the entire set in a single shot. For me that scene is unforgettable!“
