Ungli celebrates the youth
of India that is impatient, irreverent and most importantly, intolerant
to injustice. Five friends - played by Emraan Hashmi, Kangana Ranaut,
Randeep Hooda, Neil Bhoopalam and Angad Bedi - come together, like
the fingers of a fist, as vigilantes against the powers that be. Neha
Dhupia also plays a pivotal role in the film.
What makes the movie interesting is that instead of treating the subject in a heavy-handed manner, it is a fun take on the angst of today's youth. While the gang of five take it upon themselves to fight the system, they go about doing it in an entertaining manner.
Says producer Karan Johar, “It is the most unusual film I have made to date. I think the film is a magnetic balance of social relevance and entertainment. The ensemble cast packs a punch and keeps you riveted through the proceedings.“
Director Rensil D'Silva feels that today, people believe in taking matters in their own hands and this is reflected in the movie. “Ten years after I wrote Rang De Basanti, I realised that even candlelight marches don't yield results. At best, they get some media attention, but are soon forgotten. It's time for action,“ he concludes.
Ungli, produced by Dharma Productions, releases November 28.
