Twinkle Khanna, former actress, mother to Aarav (11) and Nitara (2), wife to Akshay Kumar, a social commentator with a weekly column and a successful careerwoman talks about her happy place and more in an interview to Vogue India. Read on for excerpts...

What do you miss about acting?
Nothing. I used to hate sitting in front of the mirror and getting ready and all the hours waiting around on the set. I am lucky that though I changed my profession, I still have the same lifestyle and the same friends because of my husband. I feel I have the best of both worlds.

They say women become their mothers. Is that true for you and your mother (Dimple Kapadia)?
I am waiting for my mom to turn into me. I go crazy making her organise her life. She is a true gypsy and I wish I could be like her!

The biggest lesson you learned being a working mother…
When my son was younger, he would get upset that I could not pick him up from school everyday. Today, I think he respects women a lot more than he would have if I just stayed at home and went for mindless lunches all the time.

Take us through a day in your life.
Six am is the peak time in our household. I am with the baby till 9 am, there’s a little time for my daily yoga and then off to work. I am always home from work by 3.30 in the afternoon because my son is a good Indian man and has ordered me to be home when he walks in from school. I usually do some cardio with a friend in the evening. The man of the house is back by 7 pm, which is bizarre for a movie star but he gets cranky if they take a shot after six. Then there are weeks where we are living in suitcases and going from one country to another... no schedule then.

What is your favourite thing to do with your family?
I love to go swimming with them and we spend quite a lot of time making strange home movies where we pretend to be zombies or dance to weird songs.

The compliment you seek most from your husband?
I love it when he laughs at my one-liners. Then immediately gives me a lecture about how I will get into trouble one day for these jokes.

Which is your favourite travel destination?
I love Goa. I don’t look at the mirror when I’m there and I spend all my time zipping on my scooter with my son on the back seat. It is a wonderfully liberating experience.
