XXX: RETURN OF XANDER CAGE has fared poorly in India despite its first full day in India being the fifth best ever and now the film has also not performed in North America. The opening was a bit of a disaster with it only collecting $7.15m on its first day compared to the $17.31 million of the original XXX film released in 2002. The second installment of XXX which released in 2005 can't really be compared as it did not feature Vin Diesel and managed a $4.18m opening which is actually not bad compared to the present installment. The performance of the film in India is poor but comparatively the 33-35 crore nett that it will do in India looks a better performance than its likely to put up in its domestic market of North America.

Hollywood release XXX: RETURN OF XANDER CAGE dropped in the second weekend though as it did not have a full Friday the drop from the first weekend is reasonable at 60%. The film will also finish its a run in a couple of days and will be around 35 crore nett for its lifetime business. The film also fared poorly in its domestic market as it grossed $20 million apprx in US/Canada. The business of XXX: RETURN OF XANDER CAGE is as follows.

OK JAANU dropped in its second weekend grossing around 2.50-2.75 crore nett but it could have been much worse if there were some decent new releases. The film has grossed a little under 20 crore nett now and has two more days to a little bit more business for a lifetime finish of around 21 crore nett. OK JAANU had a poor first week grossing 16.75 crore nett in the first week. The opening of the film was poor and with limited Saturday growth the film had sealed its fate. The type of film was much that collections were only going to come from the metros of Mumbai, Pune and Bangalore. Also, it revolves around live in relationships and hence the audience would have got even smaller as even metros will have a conservative audience while to have any chance at the box office, it could not afford a sections of the metro audience to not turn up. The multiplexes of the North were always going to struggle due to the hero. The film has managed to retain screens at main multiplexes but that is mainly because of no new release and there is not much chance that the numbers in the second week will be even half decent.

Hollywood release XXX: RETURN OF XANDER CAGE which had the top Hindi female star Deepika Padukane also flopped at the box office with collections of 24 crore nett in the first week. The film was released late on Friday evening which cost the film around 5 crore nett. The only plus for the film was that it collected a little over 7 crore nett on its first full day and that was the fifth highest opening day for Hollywood release in India but from there it was all downhill. The film had nothing for the Indian audiences and this week it will release in US/Canada and that will tell where this over hyped (by Indian media) Hollywood career of Deepika Padukone is going.

There was also a couple of other Hindi releases like HARAAMKHOR and ASHLEY (released mainly in the Eastern circuits) and both are box office disasters.

OK JAANU continued to fall on Tuesday with first week collections looking to be around 16.75 crore nett. The hero Aditya Roy Kapur has had many flops but Shraddha Kapoor was on a big run with films like ABCD 2 and BAAGHI but it all changes now with successive duds like ROCK ON 2 and OK JAANU. Its the sort of cinema a star on the up should keep away from but it seems to be happening quite often. Ranbir Kapoor also made similar mistakes a couple of years back by doing films like BOMBAY VELVET and TAMASHA and is still trying to recover from that. XXX: RETURN OF XANDER CAGE continued to fall on Tuesday and the way its going the film will have a first week of 23.50 crore nett apprx and even though there is no major release this week it will hardly do any business. The film will release in US/Canada this week and it will have to perform better there or the Hollywood career of Deepika Padukone will be over before it started. OK JAANU had a poor weekend as it collected just 11.75 crore nett over its first weekend as collections were hit on Sunday due to the cricket match. The writing was on the wall on day one itself when collections could not grow much on the first day. The collections are better than Shraddha Kapoor's last film ROCK ON 2 which collected 6.85 crore nett on its first weekend but in the same range as Aditya Roy Kapur's FITOOR which collected 11.78 crore nett (taking into account the match then OK JAANU is better) but that does not mean much as both films were disasters. This film has been better budgeted than those films and fetched a good satellite price of 12 crore. So recovery was never much of an issue but a poor box office performance means that that 12 crore paid will be a loss to the satellite channel. Eventually its about the box office and unless Monday surprises with a hold its heading for a flop. The collections of OK JAANU over the weekend are as follows.

The business was poor across the board in all circuits. There are some circuits where the film had no chance and some others like Mysore got affected by big South India releases. In fact the Bangalore city collections over the weekend were less than the first day numbers of KHAIDI NO 150 (Telugu), GAUTAMIPUTRA SATAKARNI (Telugu) and BAIRAVAA (Tamil). This left Mumbai and Pune to be the best performing centers. Delhi NCR and Punjab is hard anyway with a weak hero unless its a North based film with content they relate to.

XXX: RETURN OF XANDER CAGE had a low weekend but it was more because of a weird release decision to release with paid previews post 6pm on Friday. This meant that the film only had a two day weekend. If the film had a normal weekend it would have collected around 5 crore nett more and a 20 crore nett is decent for a Hollywood release. The first full day of 7 crore nett is among the top five opening days for a Hollywood film. Actually with better decision making it could have better as although Nizam/Andhra circuit saw a release on paid previews it was the Hindi/English versions only and the Telugu version released on Sunday. The weekend collections of 15 crore nett are low and just because because it missed a day of the weekend it does not mean Monday will behave differently and make up the ground lost. It could hold better but that's about it. Sunday collections were hit by the cricket match which led to a lower Sunday than Saturday. This was the first Hollywood film for Deepika Padukone but for that exercise its not really about the collections in India or any other place. Its all about the domestic collections as you have to work in the home market of the industry to have any success. The US/Canada release is next week on the 20th January.

OK JAANU had a big fall on Monday of over 50% which pretty much seals its fate at the box office if it was not sealed over the weekend. The film has recoveries from satellite and music but its not really about that. If the film worked on television that is a different matter as it would at least mean it got an audience but looking at the box office figures its a huge task. The week is looking to close at around 16-16.50 crore nett and even with no major release this Friday, a 20 crore nett final total may be a stretch. Obviously its not a huge fall from Friday as that was not a full day but collections are heavily down from the weekend. The release of the film was a total mess up and now looking at Monday it would hardly have made a difference to the outcome. The weekend would have been 20 crore nett plus but thats all. The film is looking to close the first week at around 23 crore nett with not much coming after. The only victory is that its beaten the main Hindi release OK JAANU comfortably and that too with just a two day weekend. OK JAANU could not do much on Saturday with growth of just 15%. This was expected as for one the evenings shows on Friday did not grow much and secondly its shows were hit due to XXX: RETURN OF XANDER CAGE which had its full release on Saturday. The collections of the film remained low and it will find it tough to get good growth on Sunday and even tougher to hold on Monday. For most multiplex films the Delhi and Punjab pocket has to perform well which has not happened here. In South collections are minimal due to big regional releases. Hollywood release XXX: RETURN OF XANDER CAGE grossed around 6.25 crore nett on its first full day which is a fair number for a Hollywood release and in fact better than films like Hindi films like FINDING FANNY and PIKU which were also riding on the popularity of Deepika Padukone for a start. The difference here is that this film is action-packed but with a two day weekend what can the film do? If the film had three days it would have picked up over 21 crore nett which is impossible now. The total till now is 8 crore nett including paid previews and if the film is lucky it may double the total for the weekend. The South having big regional films would have affected the collections as this sort of film has good chance in the South especially Nizam/Andhra but that area has two biggies.

OK JAANU had a pretty fair start in the morning but did not go through with the collections in the evening as it collected around 3.75-4 crore nett. The probable reason for this is the release of XXX: RETURN OF XANDER CAGE in the evening or the fact the film is only really for youth as it deals with a love in relationship so the evening audience does not really come for it. The collections are still better than films like ROCK ON 2 and FITOOR but it looked a total of around 4.50 crore nett in the morning. The film was best in the premium multiplexes of Mumbai, Pune and Bangalore while Delhi NCR could have been better and also East Punjab.

Hollywood release XXX: RETURN OF XANDER CAGE featuring Deepika Padukone released later in the evening post 6pm and managed a decent collection of around 1.75 crore nett from the paid previews. The looks a better bet than OK JAANU at least for the weekend but even this will depend on what happens on Monday and it could be tough to sustain. The South had its own big films so including the huge KHAIDI NO 150 which took an extraordinary start of over 40 crore gross box office on day one.

In the North, Punjabi film SARVANN had a very poor start and is unlikely to do much at the box office.
