Censor Board relents, drop alcohol disclaimer from M Night Shyamalan’s Trap

Netizens go, chuck, chuck, chuck

After netizens slam alcohol disclaimer carried in large font in Deadpool & Wolverine and Twisters, CBFC drops warning from Trap
Mohar Basu (MID-DAY; August 6, 2024)

In recent weeks, the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) attracted the wrath of cinephiles, who expressed their displeasure about the prominent alcohol warning displayed in film scenes depicting the consumption of liquor. The debate amplified in the past fortnight, as some scenes in Hollywood biggies Deadpool & Wolverine and Twisters featured the disclaimer. Now, the CBFC seems to have done a turnaround with M Night Shyamalan’s Trap, in which the warning is conspicuously missing.

An insider tells us that the Prasoon Joshi-headed board decided to remove these warnings from the August 2 release, after the social media uproar.

The source says, “The CBFC internally decided that the Josh Hartnett-starrer, which has several drinking scenes set in a concert, didn’t need an alcohol warning signatory. After the release of Deadpool & Wolverine, netizens lamented about the warnings.”

A user on X wrote, “Deadpool & Wolverine is censored [a certain cuss word] with a long-running warning of ‘Alcohol is injurious to health’ occupying 5 to 10 per cent IMAX screen in 3D. Are Indian adults not equipped to handle adult/R-rated content from the West?”

Since 2012, anti-smoking messages have mandatorily featured in all films that depict nicotine consumption. In contrast, while the liquor brands have been blurred in scenes, the application of anti-liquor disclaimer has been inconsistent. Its application increased in the recent months.

While the CBFC’s decision to not feature a warning in Trap was viewed as a victory for artistic freedom, others questioned the inconsistency in the board’s approach. A filmmaker, on condition of anonymity, tells mid-day, “It’s great that Trap doesn’t have these intrusive warnings, but why make exceptions? Either enforce it uniformly or rethink the policy.”

The members of CBFC, however, are believed to be in support of the alcohol disclaimers. An insider says, “Such measures are necessary to curb the glorification of alcohol consumption in films. We could decide to place them differently, but it’s important to place them."

(Crisp) Movie Review: TWISTERS by FENIL SETA

Twisters is a standalone to the much-loved film, Twister. There’s very little connection with the first part. Hence, one can see the sequel without watching it, though it's highly recommended that one sees the 1996 flick as it’s too good. The sequel starts on a chilling note. The film then falls as the makers spend time on the characters, their bond with each other and the build up. The film even gets a bit repetitive. But after the interval, there’s an interesting twist. The climax, meanwhile, is quite nail-biting. Daisy Edgar-Jones (Kate Cooper) shoulders the lead role with panache. Glen Powell (Tyler Owens) looks quite dashing and his mere presence elevates a scene. Performance-wise, he's first rate. Anthony Ramos (Javi) does well though his hairstyle could have been better. From the supporting cast, Harry Hadden-Paton (Ben) leaves a mark. Brandon Perea (Boone), Maura Tierney (Cathy; Kate's mother), Sasha Lane (Lilly), Daryl McCormack (Jeb), Kiernan Shipka (Addy), Nik Dodani (Praveen) and Tunde Adebimpe (Dexter) are quite good. All in all, Twisters is a great, mainstream entertainer. Try watching the film on as big a screen as possible, preferably IMAX.

My rating - *** ½ out of 5!

WILL BAD NEWZ BRING GOOD NEWS AT THE BOX OFFICE?

Last week’s big release, Sarfira, performed poorly at the box office. It was never expected to do big numbers on the first day. Yet, one hoped and prayed that it’ll open at around Rs. 5 crores. Sadly, the film opened at half the expected number – Rs. 2.50 crores. It collected Rs. 4 crores and Rs. 4.50 crores on Saturday and Sunday. On Monday, it dropped to Rs. 1.40 crores and had a slight jump on Tuesday when it earned Rs. 1.60 crores. This is because of the Muharram holiday on Wednesday. It’ll drop down again on Thursday and hence, the first week collections will be in the range of Rs. 17.30 crores. It will have reduced showcasing in the second week due to the release of Bad Newz. As a result, it’ll now struggle to even cross the Rs. 25 crores mark.

As for Bad Newz, the film seems to be safe. It stars Vicky Kaushal, Triptii Dimri and Ammy Virk. As the name suggests, it is on the lines of Good Newz and rests on a bizarre pregnancy-related plot. This time, a woman is pregnant with twins belonging to two different men.

Bad Newz was shot way back in 2022 and was scheduled to be released on August 25 last year. The film got pushed back by nearly 11 months. This postponement has worked in the film’s favour. This is because Animal, which was released in December, made Triptii Dimri a 'national crush'. One of the reasons the film has more hype today is due to her presence. Last year, before Animal’s release, the makers wouldn’t have had this advantage.

Besides the exciting subject, the trailer has also worked with the audience. The songs, too, have become chartbusters, especially ‘Tauba Tauba’. The song ‘Jaanam’, featuring Vicky Kaushal and Triptii Dimri, is too hot and needless to say, it has grabbed attention. At the same time, it might keep a section of the family audience away, at least on the first day.

Bad Newz is expected to open in the range of Rs. 7 crores with a good chance that it’ll hit the Rs. 8 crore mark. If that happens and if it sees a good jump in the next two days, it can have weekend collections of Rs. 30 crores plus. In fact, if word of mouth is positive, it can hang around in cinemas until Independence Day and end up with a healthy lifetime.

The other release of the week is Twisters. The earlier part, Twister, has a good following. The standalone sequel was released today, on a Thursday. It might start slow but it can grow if reports are positive.
