WILL BAD NEWZ BRING GOOD NEWS AT THE BOX OFFICE?
Last week’s big release, Sarfira, performed poorly at the box office. It was never expected to do big numbers on the first day. Yet, one hoped and prayed that it’ll open at around Rs. 5 crores. Sadly, the film opened at half the expected number – Rs. 2.50 crores. It collected Rs. 4 crores and Rs. 4.50 crores on Saturday and Sunday. On Monday, it dropped to Rs. 1.40 crores and had a slight jump on Tuesday when it earned Rs. 1.60 crores. This is because of the Muharram holiday on Wednesday. It’ll drop down again on Thursday and hence, the first week collections will be in the range of Rs. 17.30 crores. It will have reduced showcasing in the second week due to the release of Bad Newz. As a result, it’ll now struggle to even cross the Rs. 25 crores mark.
As for Bad Newz, the film seems to be safe. It stars Vicky Kaushal, Triptii Dimri and Ammy Virk. As the name suggests, it is on the lines of Good Newz and rests on a bizarre pregnancy-related plot. This time, a woman is pregnant with twins belonging to two different men.
Bad Newz was shot way back in 2022 and was scheduled to be released on August 25 last year. The film got pushed back by nearly 11 months. This postponement has worked in the film’s favour. This is because Animal, which was released in December, made Triptii Dimri a 'national crush'. One of the reasons the film has more hype today is due to her presence. Last year, before Animal’s release, the makers wouldn’t have had this advantage.
Besides the exciting subject, the trailer has also worked with the audience. The songs, too, have become chartbusters, especially ‘Tauba Tauba’. The song ‘Jaanam’, featuring Vicky Kaushal and Triptii Dimri, is too hot and needless to say, it has grabbed attention. At the same time, it might keep a section of the family audience away, at least on the first day.
Bad Newz is expected to open in the range of Rs. 7 crores with a good chance that it’ll hit the Rs. 8 crore mark. If that happens and if it sees a good jump in the next two days, it can have weekend collections of Rs. 30 crores plus. In fact, if word of mouth is positive, it can hang around in cinemas until Independence Day and end up with a healthy lifetime.
The other release of the week is Twisters. The earlier part, Twister, has a good following. The standalone sequel was released today, on a Thursday. It might start slow but it can grow if reports are positive.
