TOILET - EK PREM KATHA had a fair hold on Monday dropping 45% from Friday and is a plus film in China. The hold is not great that is going to sustain over weeks but that was always likely with film not having much for the female audience. The hold is good enough for the film to clear $14-15m and make money for its distributors. The total in four days is $10.35m apprx.

The numbers are still decent for the type of film and now with Akshay Kumar being introduced to the market it could lead to better results for PAD MAN as that film has potential to find a large female audience. A strong run would have really boosted that film but it was not to be. There is also HICHKI to release and that film also will have huge potential as it is a female driven film.

Akshay Kumar has managed to get the biggest debut weekend in China as TOILET - EK PREM KATHA grossed over $9m (61 crore apprx) and this is more than what Aamir Khan, Salman Khan or Shah Rukh Khan films made when their first films released in China. The Aamir Khan and Shah Rukh Khan debuts were a long time ago but it is Akshay Kumar who has set the benchmark for the younger heroes like Hrithik Roshan, Tiger Shroff, Ranbir Kapoor and Varun Dhawan to aim for when and if they make their debuts in the Middle Kingdom. There was HINDI MEDIUM with Irrfan Khan but that was not his debut film.

Akshay Kumar would have been a more or less totally unknown face in the market but TOILET - EK PREM KATHA has managed to get over 1.75 million people into the theaters. TOILET - EK PREM KATHA is very a desi film and with the audience for Hindi films in China is primarily women according to reports, it is a film which will hold limited appeal for them. PAD MAN is due to release in China later on this year and that could turn out to be a different kettle of fish as the subject could hold much more appeal for the female audience and its ad off beat unusual film and on top Akshay Kumar will be a more known face at that time than at the time of TOILET - EK PREM KATHA's release. Its the PAD MAN types that can really hit the right notes in a market like China if the audiences connects to them.

If the actors really want to make a dent into the Chinese market then they will have to actually go to the country and build the fan following and then please that following and its not a overnight thing. Aamir Khan started the process when 3 IDIOTS was a huge hit on the home video circuit and it took time to be at the level he is at now. No other actor has made the effort and if China can really open up and they start giving good deals where a good chunk of the business comes back then other actors will have to make the effort.

The opening weekend numbers of TOILET - EK PREM KATHA is as follows. The film is sure to be a plus film but really needs to sustain Monday onward as then it will be a HIT and more importantly will have been appreciated and that is most important for the actors.

TOILET - EK PREM KATHA had a good opening day number of $2.32 million apprx (INR 15.70 crore) in China though it was a big release. The release was very similar to Secret Superstar and may have become the second Indian film to reach 20,000 screens in China.

The opening is the fifth highest ever for and Indian film with collections a little short of BAAHUBALI 2: THE CONCLUSION and a little higher than BAJRANGI BHAIJAAN but this film was released on around 7000 screens. There is a big investment in China for TOILET - EK PREM KATHA and so, it will need to keep on going to cover the investment. It managed to be number two in China this week behind Canadian film BLACK WATER which has done well in China though it saw a DVD premiere in western countries like UK, Germany and France.

TOILET - EK PREM KATHA is a good success in China as the second day shows a solid jump in business which should go around the $3 million mark. The film is a big investment with the cost of release in China being around $7 million but it should recover and go into the plus. Its a good result for TOILET - EK PREM KATHA which is a very rural desi film. DANGAL was also a rural social and smashed all records in China but that was mainly because the girl child issue is very relatable in China which was the main reason of such huge numbers.

BAAHUBALI 2: THE CONCLUSION released a month back suffered losses despite opening a little better then TOILET - EK PREM KATHA but that film was not to the liking of the Chinese audience and finished with collections of a little under $12 million and was a losing proposition for the Chinese distributors. The loss was in the region of $1.5 million which was not much but as the films going to China are very few and hand picked by the Chinese, losses are not expected.

TOILET - EK PREM KATHA is the top film in China on the second day due to the solid growth in collections beating all new local and foreign films though a holdover film could finish ahead by the end of the day.

TOILET - EK PREM KATHA is continuing to run in its sixth and now the total stands at 131.88 crore nett. It will maybe get a few screens in the seventh week as well and end its run at 132 crore nett apprx. The film looked like it could have done more after the first week but this 132 crore nett will more than do as its the only HIT of the third quarter so far with a few releases remaining.

It is a similar trend to the second week with the film looking at a 65% drop. The collections of the film so far are 123 crore nett plus. the film should cross the business of RUSTOM and AIRLIFT today (Saturday) and then will chase the 131 crore nett of ROWDY RATHORE.

The film was looking at a 60-65% drop after its first week trend but the competition provided by ANNABELLE: CREATION has probably made the second week film gross 5 crore nett less than it looked like getting after the first week.

The film is the biggest hit of the year outside BAAHUBALI 2: THE CONCLUSION and will also become the highest grosser outside BAAHUBALI 2: THE CONCLUSION in the next few days or so. Then the next target is RAEES at 128.77 crore which would make it the highest grossing Hindi film of the year outside BAAHUBALI 2: THE CONCLUSION which was a dubbed. RAEES is a successful film but not a HIT film and its rare that a successful film is the biggest grosser of a year despite being almost eight months into the year. Competition wasn't expected as BAREILLY KI BARFI was the main release and as far as opening day goes that film was not expected to do much but Hollywood release ANNABELLE: CREATION has come out of the blue and recorded good collections on day one which has affected TOILET - EK PREM KATHA in metros and South India. TOILET - EK PREM KATHA after that little blip on day eight went back into overdrive with growth of around 65% on its second Saturday. The film grossed a solid 6.25 crore nett taking its nine day total to 104 crore nett. It will cross the business of the other release of Akshay Kumar this JOLLY LLB 2 by the end of its second weekend. TOILET - EK PREM KATHA has also become the highest grosser this year outside BAAHUBALI 2: THE CONCLUSION in Delhi/UP on Saturday. It has a total of 24.75 crore nett in Delhi/UP after nine days - the lifetime total of TUBELIGHT was 24.37 crore nett while BADRINATH KI DULHANIA was 24.25 crore nett and JOLLY LLB 2 was 24 crore nett. TOILET - EK PREM KATHA has done extremely well in its first week with 94 crore nett and this has come from an opening of a little over 11.50 crore nett. Basically the film has almost averaged its first day collections over the first week. It was helped by the big holiday on Tuesday but a film has to be accepted to get the sort of benefit it did when the holiday falls on day five. The opening of the film was average but it went into overdrive on Saturday with the sort of jump that no film collecting over 10 crore nett day one has seen unless Saturday has turned out to be a major holiday.

The first noticeable drop came on Wednesday as it was after the big holiday but Thursday was again steady with a minimal drop of 5-10%. It added 6 crore apprx on Thursday which is still less than 50% drop from day one. There will be a big jump on Saturday but a good hold on day eight will be crucial if the film is to get a really big second weekend.

The best business for the film has come in Delhi/UP (tax free in UP but that does not have the same affect as before with GST especially in UP where Entertainment Tax rates were so high). It could actually become the highest grosser of the year in Delhi/UP over the next few days that is not including BAAHUBALI 2: THE CONCLUSION though. The film may also hit 6 crore nett in West Bengal which has never happened before for an Akshay Kumar film. It should also cross the lifetime NETT of ROWDY RATHORE but it should also target the 73 crore share of ROWDY RATHORE to be a bigger grosser in real terms.
