Pulkit Samrat says layered, complex roles — which he is keen on taking up — are not offered to him much

Having spent over a decade in films, actor Pulkit Samrat is grateful for the films he’s done. But, he rues not being considered for more layered characters and blames his “good looks” for being the biggest challenge when it comes to getting the kind of roles he desires.
“Over the years, I have realized that sometimes, my good looks are becoming a hindrance to the kind of work I want to do,” the 39-year-old continues, “When people think about a hero, singing, [fighting] against the world and winning the girl, all that stuff comes to me. But, there is a lack of layered and thoughtful characters, and more thoughtful films, which I’m very fond of.”
Taking the small screen route to enter showbiz, Samrat made his film debut with the romantic comedy Bittoo Boss in 2012 and shot to fame with the Fukrey franchise. Going forward, the actor hopes to tilt the needle in his direction through his upcoming films.
“With my roles in Made In Heaven (web series) and Fukrey 3, I hope people will see both sides of me and offer me stuff that has more to do with my presence on the screen rather than just my looks,” says Samrat, stating that he is “very hungry for challenging roles”: “I got a chance to play a very different character in Bejoy Nambiar’s Taish (2020). He saw something in me that I could play and people loved it. I hope I get to do more such things, so that I can surprise people and myself.”
The actor admits work has been slow after the pandemic, but is now picking up pace. “Bahut sara kaam karna hai kyunki bahut sara pyaar chahiye mujhe. After the lockdown, everything has been a little slow. Now, things are back to normal and you will see much more of me,” he wraps up.

Her stint in Bollywood was forgettable, but Zoa Morani has been enjoying a successful run on the web platform. Following the success of Bejoy Nambiar's thriller drama Taish, she is gearing up for the release of Reema Kagti's Fallen, which marks Sonakshi Sinha's web debut.
Aptly describing her trajectory, Morani says, "I am climbing the ladder steadily, as each project continues to get bigger than the last. This role in Reema's project is an interesting one. We had shot for a day before the lockdown was imposed, and will now resume in January in Rajasthan. It is exciting to work with a director who has as much experience as she does, because, so far, I have primarily worked with débutante filmmakers."
Fallen features an ensemble cast including Gulshan Devaiah, Vijay Verma and Sohum Shah. Morani finds the discipline on Kagti's set appealing. "She is systematic. We would have reading sessions before rolling. Everyone was focused on the work at hand, and I felt like I was on an actual film-set."
But, it was a tough road to navigate to reach where she has. Morani admits that after the debacle of her film, Bhaag Johnny (2015), she struggled to bag appealing projects. The growth of the OTT platform, however, proved to be a boon. "It saved me. For actors like us, there is a lot of scope to find work."

Actors Kriti Kharbanda and Pulkit Samrat have been painting the world red on social media with their loved-up pictures. And Kharbanda seems to be quite content with their relationship as she says that they both have learned immensely from each other both in their personal and professional lives.
“He has always been a very good actor and I love that he is a team player. For him, everybody is equal. What I have learnt from him is how to be secure in your own place. I sometimes wonder how he does it. That part of my life where I feel more secure as an actor comes from him because I have seen him do it. He holds his own in all his films, in ensembles,” shares the actor.
Further dolling out praises on Samrat, she adds, “I love how he is evolving as an actor. I am proud as a friend, girlfriend and a co-star.”
The 30-year-old, who has worked with Samrat in films such as Veerey Ki Wedding (2018) and Pagalpanti (2019) and the recent web project, Taish, says she appreciates the energy that he brings to the set.
“It is great having him on set. Not just because we are in a personal relationship. I have worked with Pulkit even before we started dating each other. In fact, that is how we first met and that is how we became good friends. If he wasn’t a good co-actor to me, we would not be where we are today personally,” she explains.
But even though the couple has worked together in films together, Kharbanda admits that they never pre-decide what projects they are going to take up.
“We keep our personal and professional life separate. When he signed Taish and when I signed the film, we didn’t know we were both doing it. We discussed it only after both of us got on board, and we happened to discuss our schedules and that is how we found out,” she says.

Taish starts off well especially the introduction of characters. The first half has its share of some funny and dramatic sequences. The fight sequence in the washroom is exhilarating and the sequences that follow are very engrossing. The intermission point is shocking. One expects fireworks in the second half but sadly, this is where the film drops. It becomes too long and also very unconvincing. Also, a few subplots are not strong enough. Bejoy Nambiar with his directorial brilliance and beautiful use of colours does try to salvage the film. But it succeeds only to an extent. Speaking of performances, Jim Sarbh is efficient in the part of a non-villainous part, a rarity in his career! Harshvardhan Rane is brilliant as the menacing gangster-cum-lover. Pulkit Samrat is a surprise; you have never seen him in such an avatar. The stunning Kriti Kharbanda is impressive. Zoa Morani has a great screen presence. Melissa Raju Thomas (Simmi) is promising. Sanjeeda Shaikh is okay; one wishes her character had more to do. Abhimanyu Singh is too good in a short role. Ankur Rathee, Saurabh Sachdeva (Sukhi), Viraf Patel and others are fine. All in all, Taish is an average fare!

ACTION THRILLER & HORROR FLICK TO BRING CHEER IN PRE-DIWALI
The Diwali season is around the corner. A lot of exciting films are expected at that time, with one of them even expected to release in cinemas. Before that, two films are all set to release tomorrow. Both are a bit dark but have some plusses in its favour.
TAISH: It is directed by Bejoy Nambiar of Shaitan, David and Wazir fame and has an impressive star cast comprising Harshvardhan Rane, Pulkit Samrat, Jim Sarbh, Kriti Kharbanda and Sanjeeda Shaikh. Bejoy is technically quite superior and has used his knowledge and expertise very well in his previous films. The trailer of Taish also suggests that the visual tonality of the film will be something to watch out for. Interestingly, Taish will be released as a film as well as a web-series. Not just that, the film is expected to be around two hours long while the web series will be longer, around three hours long, with far more character depth. It’s probably a rare phenomenon that a film is also releasing in a long format. It remains to be seen whether audiences embrace the film or the web series version of Taish.
KAALI KHUHI: It is a horror flick starring Shabana Azmi, Sanjeeda Shaikh, Riva Arora and Satyadeep Misra. The trailer is a bit bizarre but it can make for an intense, nail-biting flick. Sadly, the buzz for the film is negligible. But that’s alright as it’s a web film and here, there’s no pressure of weekend collections or getting as many footfalls as possible in the first three days. Several films and series on the net have got more viewership later on. The same can happen with Kaali Khuhi if the word of mouth is positive.

Sanjeeda Shaikh pursues digital entertainment with Taish, Kaali Khuhi after small-screen stint

Best remembered for Kyaa Hoga Nimmo Kaa, Kayamath and Ek Haseena Thi, television actor Sanjeeda Shaikh has now switched gears to the web world. Come this weekend, the actor will be seen in two back-to-back releases — Bejoy Nambiar's Taish on ZEE5 and Terrie Samundra's Netflix film, Kaali Khuhi. "When I got a call from the casting agency, I did the look test. Frankly, being a TV actor, I thought I would never get the projects, but I was proved wrong," exclaims Shaikh.
Over her 14-year run in showbiz, Shaikh had become one of the most popular actors in Indian television. However, over the past few years, she cut down on her television appearances, in a bid to explore uncharted waters. "I am a proud television actor; it is because of my work on the small screen that people know of me. But television gets monotonous after some time. Playing the same character in the same get-up for years can be repetitive. An offer has to be enticing for me to return to the tube at this juncture."
Where she plays a family-oriented woman in Taish, Shaikh essays the role of a mother in the Netflix horror thriller. She admits that the latter holds a special place in her career as it marks her on-screen union with Shabana Azmi. "My mother was elated to know that I would be in the same frame as the legend. She has been Shabana ji's fan since Ankur [1974]. Being with her was like going back to acting school. In our first meeting, she gave me a warm hug that put all my nervous energy to rest."

"I keep my personal and professional life separate," asserts Kriti Kharbanda, even as she is aware that the two worlds have come together in Taish. The ZEE5 original sees her reunite with boyfriend Pulkit Samrat after Veerey Ki Wedding (2018) and Pagalpanti (2019). However, it is evident that director Bejoy Nambiar is only serving the demand of the script as he has not paired them romantically in the revenge drama.
"Bejoy has gone against what would have been an obvious choice. People expect to see us as an on-screen couple since we are one in real life, and I will be happy to do that. That said, I have my individuality," says the actor, who plays Jim Sarbh's love interest.
Glad as she is to have found a partner who understands the demands of the business, Kharbanda says it is imperative not to mix work with pleasure. "I didn't even know Pulkit was doing this film. He doesn't know the scripts I am reading, and vice versa," she says, before recounting how she broke the news of signing Taish to Samrat. "When I told Pulkit that I had signed the film, he asked, 'Do you know who is playing Sunny? Me!' I remember telling him we are living our dream because both of us wanted to work with Bejoy."
After the heady euphoria of a new romance, the two — who went public with their relationship in 2019 — have now settled in the calm comfort of steady love. Ask her if marriage is on the cards, and she says, "We came out in the open even though no one asked us to. Whenever we decide to take our relationship to the next level, I will be vocal about it."

The actor talks about his recent battle with COVID-19

Actor Harshvardhan Rane missed out on the promotions of his upcoming film Taish, which has been directed by Bejoy Nambiar. It turns out, he was hospitalised and in a serious condition after testing positive for Coronavirus. The actor says, “I was on oxygen support in the ICU for four days. I feel bad that I couldn’t promote the film at all. In fact, I still feel weak. It started with a severe headache and a slight fever. When the headache didn’t subside even after four days, I went to a hospital, where they dismissed it as viral fever. However, they did a COVID-19 test, which turned out to be positive. When I didn’t get any relief from fever and headache even after two days, I went to the hospital once again, and they admitted me to the ICU immediately. It was only after eight days that my fever subsided aur headache kam hua.”
Harshvardhan says that his film’s team was extremely worried about him. He shares, “Bejoy would check on me two-three times a day. It’s a strange coincidence that I had locked myself up for a week to prepare for my character in Taish. And, when the trailer was launched, I was again in isolation, but for a different reason. I would continuously watch the teaser of the film and even messaged Bejoy, saying, ‘Dawai kaam nahi kar rahi hai, but aapka teaser is making me feel better’.”

Harshvardhan Rane on dubbing for the Bejoy Nambiar directed-venture from the hospital

The pandemic has compelled everyone to think out of the box—from conducting remote shoots to seeking digital premiere of movies. Harshvardhan Rane has taken it a notch higher—the actor, who had tested positive for Coronavirus earlier this month, dubbed for Bejoy Nambiar's Taish from his hospital bed.
In his bid to meet the October 29 deadline, Rane recorded a few lines on his phone, at the director's behest. "I made a small studio in the hospital with 12 blankets when I was in the ICU," explains the actor, adding that the medical staff initially found his sudden requests for blankets rather worrisome. "The nurses felt I had lost my mind when I told them it was to create a small dubbing studio. I made a little den to minimise the external noise to ensure clarity. They had to work on the sound professionally after I sent them the recording. Taish worked as an anti-COVID drug for me."
A firm believer in doing his homework, Rane got into the skin of the character before shooting for the ZEE5 project. "I had locked myself up [to channel] the character's rage," says the actor, who had then temporarily shifted his base to the outskirts of Mumbai. He also credits Nambiar for giving him a free hand to interpret his character. "Bejoy has this great quality of not spoon-feeding his actors. He also acknowledges the audience's intelligence and serves [content that gives them a window] into his thoughts." Taish has been developed in two formats— a two-hour film and a six-part series.
Ready to bounce back to work, the actor will resume shooting for the Taapsee Pannu and Vikrant Massey-starrer Haseen Dillruba later this month. "We were supposed to finish [the schedule] in March. We returned from Haridwar, and in the next 24 hours, the lockdown was announced."

Bejoy Nambiar on being part of the directorial team of Dixit's web debut that rolls in Nashik

Unlike the entertainment industry that is gradually picking up the pace, director Bejoy Nambiar has been working at a frenetic speed. Only days after he shot for a Tamil short film in Chennai, the director is set to head to Nashik early next month to helm Madhuri Dixit-Nene's web debut, backed by Karan Johar's Dharmatic Entertainment.
"I am directing two episodes of the Netflix show, The Actress. Madhuri is one of the biggest idols of Hindi cinema. Naturally, I am thrilled to get a chance to work with her," states Nambiar, who serves as one of the three directors. Revolving around a superstar who vanishes without a trace, the suspense drama sees Sri Rao as the director-showrunner. Nambiar adds, "I have never worked on a project where somebody else is the showrunner, and I have to fulfil the directorial responsibilities. So, this will be a new experience for me."
The writer-director also has the ZEE5 original, Taish, on the anvil. "As creators, we are constantly attempting new things. It was a challenge to develop Taish in two formats — a film and a series."

The duo grew close during the marathon schedule of a comedy in London

Mirror had recently reported (September 9) that Huma Qureshi and Mudassar Aziz have made their relationship Insta-official after dating for over a year. On the filmmaker’s birthday on September 5, the actress shared a series of pictures, calling them “The Many Moods of Mudassar” and adding, “love you more than you know.”
Now, we have learnt that Kriti Kharbanda and Pulkit Samrat, who first worked together in Ashu Trikha’s 2018 romcom, Veerey Ki Wedding, are going steady since the last six months. The frequent costars, who will be seen together again in the multi-starrer comedy, Pagalpanti, had first sparked dating rumours by making a joint appearance at Varun Sharma’s birthday bash in February last year.
However, a source close to the development informs that the duo grew close during the shoot of Pagalpanti in the UK earlier this year. “Kriti and Pulkit would hang out a lot together during the 58-day schedule of the film in London. They live in the same residential complex. She was charmed by his small but thoughtful gestures,” the source reveals, adding that while Pulkit’s dedication to fitness has rubbed off on Kriti—they work-out with the same trainer—the Bangalore girl who is fond of South Indian food has got her beau hooked to the cuisine and often sends homemade dishes for him on sets.
While shooting in Leeds during the rains earlier this year, the duo had shared solo pictures from the same spot in front of the Albion Court. “When it rains, I share my umbrella. If there’s no umbrella, I share the rain,” Pulkit had quipped alongside the post, while Kriti simply quoted a Rihanna chartbuster, “Under my umbrella.”
Before that, the actress, who will next be seen in Housefull 4, headlined by Akshay Kumar, had wished Pulkit on his birthday on December 29 last year, calling him a “hero”, while Pulkit had marked her birthday on October 29 by cheekily hailing her as a “drama queen”. “Wish you loads of love and no love handles. I had a picture of us together, but I looked hotter than you, so I dropped the idea,” the actor had remarked.
Interestingly, the couple is now heading towards a hat-trick as co-stars with Bejoy Nambiar’s next Taish but aren’t paired opposite each other in it. “They have been offered some more projects together too and are presently shooting for a song for Pagalpanti in Mumbai. Whenever they are shooting together, Pulkit always makes sure to send chocolates or flowers over to Kriti’s makeup room before she has turned up at work,” the source signs off.

Harshvardhan Rane, who was last seen in J P Dutta’s Paltan, has wrapped up the shooting of Bejoy Nambiar’s revenge drama Taish. The actor has been in the United Kingdom for two months and shot at the Shepton Mallet prison, which is the UK’s most haunted prison. After the shoot was wrapped up, the Sanam Teri Kasam actor got nostalgic and persuaded the makers of the film to let him preserve the prison uniform as a memorabilia.
Harshvardhan says, “I had bittersweet emotions as we inched towards the wrap. The character that I essay has taken me on a personal journey and I never wanted it to end, but I am glad that I got to keep the prison uniform. It’s going to be one of my most cherished souvenirs.”

TV actress Sanjeeda Shaikh has bagged the lead role in Bejoy Nambiar’s next. The film is a revenge drama titled Taish and has an ensemble cast. Sanjeeda will be playing the female lead opposite Harshvardhan Rane and she’s gung-ho about her role.
Says the actress, “Everyone waits to work with a good filmmaker and I am glad I did that. My role is not an easy character, but a complicated one. We had to prep for it — normally in TV we don’t have preps and workshops, and I loved the whole process. What also attracted me to the film was the genre, it’s very interesting. It allows me to play a tough girl, something that I also aspire to be in real life. It’s my first Bollywood film and my fingers are crossed. My earlier film was with Shoojit Sircar, but owing to some complications, it didn’t release. I also got busy with TV, did a Punjabi film, and now I have this. So, it is technically my first Bollywood film and I want to give it my 200 per cent.”

Bejoy Nambiar who had last directed Wazir in 2016, featuring Amitabh Bachchan, Farhan Akhtar and Aditi Rao Hydari, is now set to roll with a thriller. It is titled Taish, which translates as rage.
A source connected to the film reveals that shooting begins in the United Kingdom in July, where the film will be shot entirely. Jim Sarbh, Harshvardhan Rane and Amit Sadh are the three leading men. The actresses opposite them are yet to be finalised. The film is a revenge drama. “Bejoy had been working on the script for a long time and now just the final details are being worked on,” adds the source.
The director had also written the story of the Irrfan Khan, Dulquer Salmaan and Mithila Palkar journey film, Karwaan. It was directed by debutant Akarsh Khurana and released last year in August.
