Many people think I am Gujarati as I speak fluent Gujarati-Swwapnil Joshi

Preeti Atulkar (BOMBAY TIMES; December 22, 2024)

A well-known name in the list of Marathi actors, Swwapnil Joshi is now set to make a foray into the Gujarati film industry, with the first Gujarati film of his career - Shubhchintak. Excited to begin this journey, the actor speaks to us about exploring a new industry, and the importance of staying relevant with time. Excerpts:

‘Everyone needs to be very thorough today, as a professional’
Swwapnil, who has earlier played a Gujarati character in the 2010 TV show, 'Papad Pol- Shahabuddin Rathod Ki Rangeen Duniya', says that he sees no difference in the way Marathi and Gujarati industries operate.

“This is my first Gujarati film, but I see the same level of professionalism, dedication, and passion. As a professional, I believe everyone needs to be thorough today. The competition is tough, and if you’re not good, you won’t last. It’s important to stay up to date professionally, and I see that here,” shares the Vaalvi actor.

‘I have done an extensive workshop for the film’
Quiz him if he is working on mastering the Gujarati language and he says, “I understand and speak fluent Gujarati. In fact, many people think I am Gujarati because of that. Having said that, mouthing dialogues for a film is a whole different ball game. For that, we have a dialect coach. In fact, we have been through an extensive workshop before the film went on floors.”

‘Entertainment is a serious business’
Emphasizing the importance of a formal prep prior to shoots, Swwapnil says, “Nowadays, most of the filmmakers plan a 15-day workshop before shooting kicks off. Entertainment is a serious business. With every film, you are entering a new world. You need to be well-prepared before you start portraying the characters. There are diction coaches even for Marathi films. When I did 'Mi Pan Sachin', I worked on the Kolhapuri dialect with the help of an expert.”

‘I never juggle two projects simultaneously’
Describing his style of working, the 'Duniyadari' actor says that he focuses on one project at a time. “If you see my track record, I’ve done only 20 to 22 films in my entire career in the Marathi film industry. Most of my films have done well at the box office, which is why people think that I’ve done a lot of work. But I haven’t. I never juggle two projects simultaneously. It’s not right, nor wrong. It’s my style of working,” adds Swwapnil.

Playing Krishna taught me to live in the moment-Swwapnil Joshi

Shruti Paniker (BOMBAY TIMES; September 7, 2023)

“Three decades on, when one recalls the onscreen Krishnas, I am blessed to be one of the names that comes up,” says Swwapnil Joshi, who played the role of a young Krishna in Ramanand Sagar’s TV show Shri Krishna. The actor adds, “It was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. Ramanand Sagar made Shri Krishna after the success of Ramayan, and I got an offer to play the central character. It couldn’t have gotten bigger than that. It was an absolute no-brainer (to take up the role).”

The actor reveals that it was also a chance for him to re-associate with Ramanand Sagar after his turn as Kush (of Lav-Kush) in Uttar Ramayan. “I played an interesting part of Krishna’s lifetime. There was the romance with Radha, then Kans vadh, so I played some important milestones in Krishna’s life. I was honoured that Dr Sagar thought of me for the role back then,” he adds. Excerpts:

On the prep that went behind portraying Krishna
I was 16, young and naïve. And most of my prep was done by Dr Sagar. Right from conceptualization and storytelling to dialogues and picturization – it was his brainchild. All we did as actors was surrender to his vision. So, if you loved me as Krishna, the first credit goes to Him (Krishna) for inspiring me to act well, and the rest goes to Dr Sagar.

On being remembered as Krishna
Every character takes a part of you and every character gives a part of itself to you. So, the fact that it’s been 30 years, and that there have been other actors who’ve played Krishna in 10 other bigger shows, if I am still remembered as Krishna then I’ve definitely given something to the character. I think I gave an innocence to the character and a certain cuteness to it. I want to believe that I’ve given something to the character that it has stayed with people.

On people worshipping him as Krishna
I think my middle class upbringing helped me stay grounded despite all the adulation that came my way while playing Krishna. I used to live in a chawl in Gujarat. And the love of fans was surreal. Playing the character taught me to live in the moment. The second thing it taught me was: ‘Karmanye Vadhikaraste, Ma Phaleshu Kadachana’ (Perform your deeds without any expectation of the fruit).

On playing Krishna again
If I choose to take up the role of Krishna again, it’d depend on who’s making the show. It cannot be made as a film project or a web series with a balance sheet in mind, the makers need to understand the sanctity of it. With the right kind of people with the right setup, why not!

Today, pan Indian films are our big attempt. Everything cannot be pan India-Ratna Pathak Shah

Onkar Kulkarni (BOMBAY TIMES; May 8, 2023)

At the recently concluded FICCI Frames 2023 Ratna Pathak Shah, Renuka Shahane, Swwapnil Joshi and Manasi Parekh shared their thoughts on how regional cinema needs to hold its own amidst the current pan-India cinema wave during the session ‘One Nation: Many Cinematic Voices’. As they spoke about the survival of films from various languages across India, Renuka stressed on the constant competition Marathi cinema has faced over the years.

She said, “We have yet not really cracked the code of competition with Hindi or Hollywood films, which are released in Maharashtra. I think as an industry, we have not been able to crack the viability code because if we have to dream any further, then we have to crack that within our own state first before we experiment with audiences all over India.”

‘WE NEED A PARADIGM SHIFT IN THE WAY WE EXHIBIT AND DISTRIBUTE FILMS’
Marathi films, too, have excelled at the box office and made noise, but Renuka pointed out that the pace has been quite sluggish. The actress feels that Marathi cinema faces a lot of competition and the industry should come together to find a solution.

She elaborated, “Films like Me Shivajiraje Bhosale Boltoy broke records, and Sairat did exceedingly well. But these are exceptions, how do we make these exceptions a rule is a question. The industry must come together and find a solution for it. I think we need a paradigm shift in the way we exhibit and distribute films because there has to be space for experimentation, which is not in direct competition with the rates of commercial Hindi, Telugu or Tamil films, otherwise, our films are never going to cross that barrier. If we are constantly faced with that competition of viability, we just do not have the theatres where our films will be released or subsidized over a period.”

‘TODAY, THERE’S A NEW AUDIENCE WHICH WANTS MORE OF THEIR OWN LIVES REFLECTED IN WHAT THEY SEE’
We have ample and diverse stories to tell from across the length and breadth of our country. In such a scenario, Ratna believes that there’s no need to focus only on pan-Indian films. Sharing her, she said, “Today, kids in their teens pick up a camera and make something. So, there’s that enormous change in the accessibility to resources. There are cheaper resources available to make any kind of content on social media. All these things have led to different kinds of content being acceptable to different audiences. Our mistake is that we keep imagining that everything should be acceptable to everyone. Today, pan-Indian films are our big attempt. Everything cannot be pan-India!”

She added, “There’s a new audience now, which wants more of their own lives reflected in what they see. I think that’s the big difference. The audience doesn’t want only fantasy. They know that life is tough, and they want to see some reflection of that, so I think that is another big change. We are becoming aware that India is more than just a small band of people and a small band of ideas. That wonderful diversity of India, which I am so proud of and which we have read about in school books forever, is something we have genuinely managed to preserve over 5,000 years of civilization. We have kept our differences, isn’t that wonderful? But today, we are busy trying to homogenize and movies have played a part in that.”

Krishna devotees used to come just to catch a glimpse of me-Swwapnil Joshi

Krishna devotees used to come just to catch a glimpse of me: Swapnil

S Farah Rizvi (HINDUSTAN TIMES; August 19, 2022)

Actor Swwapnil Joshi, who played the titular role in the show Shri Krishna as a teenager, feels that playing such a character helped him build a deep emotional bond with the deity.

On the occasion of Janamashtami, the 44-year-old actor tells us about his experience of essaying the role of Lord Krishna on the small screen. He says, “I believe that as an actor when you do certain characters, they take away a part of your soul, but when you play such divine roles, they add to your existence.”

Joshi also talks about the response that the show and his character received back in the day, when it was still on air in the ’90s. He shares, “There would be huge crowds (Krishna devotees) outside my house as well as on the sets where people used to come just to catch a glimpse of me or take blessings. Ramanand (Sagar) ji, the show creator, said to me, ‘It’s not you that they are coming to, it’s the divine character that you are essaying that is pulling them towards you…Remember you are just a medium’.” He further adds, “I feel delighted to see how people still see me as a medium between them and the divine incarnation.”

Joshi, who began his journey in the showbiz as a 9-year-old and has been a part of other mythological shows as well like Uttar Ramayan sums up, “Be it the role of Kush in Uttar Ramayan or Shri Krishna that went on to become a cult, both came finding me.”

I am a better father than son, husband, an actor or anything else-Swwapnil Joshi

I am a better father than actor or husband

Actor Swwapnil Joshi talks about being a hands-on father and gives himself full marks for the same
Vinay MR Mishra (HINDUSTAN TIMES; May 17, 2022)

Actor Swwapnil Joshi may have been in the showbiz for over three decades, but there’s one thing he aspires to do before this year ends. “I promised my daughter that I will be super fit by the end of 2022,” he quips. Joshi’s six-year-old daughter Myra wishes to see him “super fit”. “In bacchon ke funde alag hote hain. So I’m going to give it my best shot,” he adds.

Interestingly, an entire generation witnessed Joshi grow up from being a kid to being a father of two. Ask him what kind of dad he is, and the actor nonchalantly replies, “I am absolutely brilliant. At the cost of sounding immodest, I will give myself 10/10. I am a hands-on father. I think I am a better father than son, husband, an actor or anything else.”

Joshi, who also has a four-year-old son, named Raghav, recalls taking two months of paternity leave when his daughter was born. “From changing her diapers then to changing her clothes even today, I have done everything. From making them sleep, waking them up, to taking them for drives, dates, movies, picking them up from their classes or bathing them, you name it and I have done it all,” shares the 44-year-old.

The actor, who is currently shooting for a daily soap in Pune, shares that whenever he is in Mumbai, he has a rule: “If I am in Mumbai, I make it a point that I either see them waking up or see them going to bed. So, either I will leave late for the shoot or I make sure I am home by 10.30 pm, as they sleep by 11 pm. I sit and chat with them, hear their complaints and sort them out,” he signs off.

While speaking about the joint venture Subhash Ghai, the showman of Bollywood and Chairman of Whistling Woods International, said, “There are more than 10,000 scripts from our ancient era, from Walmiki to Tulsidas, but only 2000 of them have been converted into films. The acting school founded by us is to cater to this untapped stuff. I will keep producing films in my second half of the life. I keep telling my students at Whistling Woods to work on the untapped stories and understand their nuances, the point of view behind them. I can proudly say that my students have been working on it for last 15 years. I am proud to be associated with ‘1OTT’ because it will give recognition to my students and budding talent by showcasing their works through mobile App.”

“I used to make films in Hindi, but today the films are produced in various Indian languages and they are doing good amount of business. Now, you cannot make films any one particular language, but they have to be in maximum Indian languages and it is the future of the film industry. The changes we have witnessed in last two decades have stormed the film industry. I am happy to learn about the OTT App my friend Swwapnil has come up with to cater to various Indian languages. Though India has various languages, we have more than 5000 dialects in use and we should always keep it in mind while producing content,” said Ghai.

Swwapnil Joshi said, “We are thankful to Whistling Woods and Subhash Ghai ji for this association which is just the beginning of very long-term partnership. Through this partnership audience will get an opportunity to watch the very first projects of now well-known directors in Bollywood. They are in 4 to 5 Indian languages, and of course in English.”

It swells our hearth with pride and gives us a lot of positivity and encouragement to do bigger and better projects in the future. When you think about the legendary director Ghai saab, the first and foremost words come to your mind are craftmanship, grandeur, storytelling, world class stuff among others,” he said.

Narendra Firodia said, “India is a huge market for the contents on OTT and it has been proven in the last two years. Since the regional languages were not getting the due participation on these platforms, we decided to launch ‘1 OTT’ for the content in Indian languages. The platform will benefit the contents from all the Indian languages. We are aiming at giving quality content in Indian languages to our viewers and that way it will be India’s OTT. The joint venture with WWI is nothing but showcasing the upcoming and one of the best talents from industry on this platform.”

Chetan Maniar said, “We at 1OTT, a hybrid regional streaming platform are very pleased to announce the tie up with Whistling Woods International which is Film Communication and Creative art institute located in Mumbai promoted by the Mr Subhash Ghai. Whistling Woods will provide 1OTT with fresh and entertaining content developed by its students. In my personal opinion there shall be lots of opportunities created within the industry. The synergy creates an ecosystem that allows aspiring content creators to showcase their talents and viewers getting fresher content to view. 1OTT looks forward to this new initiative which we are certain will be of mutual benefit. In many ways it's a perfect fit.”

After the logo of ‘1 OTT’ was launched by Maharashtra governor B S Koshyari in January, the OTT platform joined hands with Padhega Bharat drive in February to offer the syllabus for students of Classes V to X on the digital platform. The 1 OTT platform will cater to the regional content covering all major Indian language to become truly ‘Apne Bharat Ka Apna Mobile TV’. The platform will prove the OTT of India by telecasting films and series in regional languages including Hindi, Marathi, Bengali among others.

Marathi daily soaps are less clichéd than Hindi TV shows-Swwapnil Joshi

Vinay MR Mishra (HINDUSTAN TIMES; February 24, 2022)

Actor Swwapnil Joshi is back on the TV screens after a gap of around four years. Although he will be seen in a Marathi TV show, he has no qualms about the small screen. Instead, Joshi believes Marathi makers are delivering better content than Hindi makers.

“Marathi TV shows are very interesting. Whether it is on the digital front or big screen, Marathi content tells more real stories. Marathi daily soaps are less clichéd than Hindi TV shows. The storytelling is better and more relatable, as they are closer to reality than Hindi TV shows. (So) it’s more fun to do them,” Joshi elaborates.

The actor started his career at the age of nine with Ramanand Sagar’s show Uttar Ramayana. Working round the clock for a TV show does bring back good old memories to him.

Currently, he is shooting for his Marathi daily in Pune, and while it has been “extremely hectic”, the 44-year-old has no complaints.

“I am extremely proud of the fact that I am a product of TV,” says the actor, adding, “No matter how many different things I do, how many web shows I do and how successful they turn out to be, deep down, I will always be indebted to the fact that I am who I am primarily because of TV; all the Hindi and Marathi TV shows that I did. I think television has been the biggest contributor towards my career. And I am extremely proud and passionate about it.”

Swwapnil Joshi's ‘1 OTT’ and ‘Padhega Bharat’ announce plans to launch the syllabus for Std V to X in digital form

The two entities working on the regional languages at the national level by producing the content in these respective languages have announced plans to make these programs available to all at a very affordable price

Superstar from film and TV industry Swwapnil Joshi and leading industrialist and philanthropist Narendra Firodia have jointly founded ‘1OTT’ and they are joined by Vinayak Satpute, founding member Venkatesh Srinivasan, Rajiv Jani, noted banker Satish Utekar, well known personality from entertainment sector Shri Chetan Maniyar and Sandeep Ghuge. Their joint venture ‘1OTT’ is the digital platform to produce and telecast the entertainment contents from various Indian languages. By producing the programs in various regional languages such as Marathi, Bengali and Hindi, the platform has, in true sense, become ‘Apne Bharat Ka Apna Mobile TV’. Padhega Bharat, on the other hand, is an educational digital platform with the focus on syllabus in Indian languages. Though the platform provides syllabus in English, Padhega Bharat has been emphasising on the content in regional languages over the last three years.

While imparting the information about the joint venture between the two companies, actor Swwapnil Joshi said, “‘Padhega Bharat’ has already made the syllabus of Std V to X in digital form in Marathi on ‘1OTT’ platform. In addition to that, they are also bringing the syllabus of Std V to X in other Indian languages including Urdu, Bengali, Gujarati, and Hindi on the online platform. It follows the introduction of the syllabus of IAS, IPS, and IRS in digital form as well. UPSC, MPSC syllabus too will be launched on ‘1OTT’ digital platform soon. Amar Sable, Mentor of ‘Padhega Bharat’ and his daughter and Managing Director of ‘Padhega Bharat’ Venu Sable have shouldered the responsibility of bringing the syllabus in digital form. The duo has resolved to bring all the syllabus taught in India in digital form.”

Both ‘1OTT’ and ‘Padhega Bharat’ are dedicated to work in the interest of the regional languages and both the entities share the same ideology. Thus both of them have come together on a common thread, said Swwapnil Joshi. “‘1OTT’ will avail all the links of all syllabus introduced by ‘Padhega Bharat’. ‘1OTT’ ecosystem will make all the syllabus available after making the instant payment for them. The parents can download the same immediately for their children. The model syllabus is available on ‘1OTT’ app for more information. The app also offers many discounts and schemes for syllabus. After the ‘Padhega Bharat’ initiative, which is very strong in the sector, joined hands with ‘1OTT’, the Edutainment vertical we have been working on has been strengthened. This will enable the users to use the same forum for education and entertainment without downloading any new app. ‘1OTT’ subscribers will get a 50% discount for some of the ‘Padhega Bharat’ programs. Similarly, the subscribers of some of the ‘Padhega Bharat’ programs will get a few ‘1OTT’ programs free of cost for a year. We expect 10 lakh subscribers in the first year, of which 30% subscribers will be of ‘Padhega Bharat’”, said Joshi

“This joint venture is the new beginning of edutainment. Online education has become an integral part of our life during the Covid-19 pandemic. The students can learn from anywhere. ‘Padhega Bharat’ has brought the syllabus of all classes in digital form. The blockchain model is being implemented for the first time. Students and their parents are getting this package together by enabling them to get entertainment and education as an integral package,” said Narendra Firodia while speaking about the new partnership.

“We have aimed at taking our unique syllabus to at least one lakh students in the first year. We are going to improvise the initiative by taking recommendations from the students. We have been aiming to give quality education at an affordable price. This is a one-of-its-kind experiment in India of bringing education and entertainment together. The partnership will focus on edutainment and its independent operation,” said Amar Sable.

Amar Sable added, “The industrial revolution-4 is happening at the much rapid pace compared to the earlier industrial revolutions. When the entire world is adopting modern technology, it would not be appropriate for us to be mute spectators of it. Keeping with the true spirit of Digital India policy and taking advantage of fibre optical network, the ‘Padhega Bharat’ initiated to take the modern technology to the next generation students and the last beneficiary involved in the chain. To achieve the target, the entity created a syllabus for graduation, post-graduation courses, besides the syllabus for Std 1 to 12, with the value-added features. ‘Padhega Bharat’ has tried, in its unique way, to integrate the conventional education with the modern education by adopting modern forms and thus stimulating the intellectual and social skills of the students. ‘1OTT’ platform will help to take this modern education to the students.”

“‘Padhega Bharat’, the e-learning venture has introduced various courses for educational syllabus and skill development. The initiative has successfully integrated with various action based educational programs which are part of the National Education Policy 2020. We have been implementing foreign language programs along with IT courses including Block Chain, SAP and BI. Our e-Content is in the form of Audio and Visual enabling the students to assimilate even difficult concepts easily,” said Venu Sable.

She added, “Action-based education, actual use of education in practical life, moral values are the major factors in National Education Policy 2020 adopted by ‘Padhega Bharat’ in its syllabus designed for Std 5 to 10. It has helped ‘Padhega Bharat’ to institute one of the best syllabus in Audio-Visual form. ‘Padhega Bharat’ and ‘1OTT’ have come together to educate youngsters by giving them education and values and do away with the deficit in the educational merits. We hope that the ‘Padhega Bharat’ syllabus will help in bringing positive changes in the assessment and evaluation of the students.”

In 2022, I will go back to Marathi theatre, because I always feel theatre hones your skill-Swwapnil Joshi

Juhi Chakraborty (HINDUSTAN TIMES; January 4, 2022)

For 2022, actor Swwapnil Joshi has new goals. This includes going back to exploring avenues that he hasn’t for a while, such as theatre and TV.

“I have been a TV product,” says Joshi, who started his acting career as a child artiste with Uttar Ramayan and Shri Krishna. He adds, “In 2022, I will go back to Marathi theatre, because I always feel theatre hones your skill. I haven’t done theatre in the last eight years... I will probably do a Marathi play this year or a limited episode TV series. Television is my first love and I like to go back to it, once every three to four years.”

While these are his professional goals for the year, the actor already has his 2022 work calendar sorted. And the lineup looks exciting.

“I am looking at different projects in 2022. I have two web shows. They will air in the latter half of 2022. Two of my films are ready for release. And hopefully, they will make their way to theatres soon. One is a big project and the other is a small one, but both are very special to me,” he reveals.

The 44-year-old actor, who ended 2021 on a high with two OTT projects as well as announcement of the launch of his own OTT platform, also had some personal achievements.

“Last year was a mixed bag. It began with Samantar 2 and ended with Bali. The response to both projects has been amazing. I also bought myself a car, and gifted my wife one. But the pandemic has been tough, and I hope that things improve soon and do not worsen,” Joshi ends.

Swwapnil Joshi announces his upcoming film Ashwath; intriguing teaser and poster released

Marathi superstar Swwapnil Joshi has treated his fans on the New Year by sharing a glimpse of his new Marathi film, Ashwath, to be released later in the winter of 2022. The teaser and poster of the film directed by Lokesh Gupte were released on the eve of the New Year.

The teaser of the Ashwath is based on a famous shloka from Bhagavad Gita. The Sanskrit shloka roughly translates as “One should raise oneself by one's Self alone; let not one lower oneself; for the Self alone is the friend of oneself, and the Self alone is the enemy of oneself."

The Sanskrit shloka is followed by, in the backdrop of a horse running at full pace, with a Marathi verse that says, “Ashwath is the one who leads his life with self-esteem by tiding over the heart, wisdom, soul and ego.” The teaser denotes the rough idea about the script of the film leading to the rousing of the curiosity about the film. The curiosity has also gone northward after the Sanskrit shloka in the teaser is heard in the voice of Makarand Deshpande. The film lovers are curious to know whether the leading theatre personality is part of the film’s cast.

Swwapnil Joshi, while sharing the teaser of the film with his fans and followers on social media, said, “New year, new resolution…Nandi Ashwatthachi !!! (The foreboding of Ashwath!)."

The film is directed by noted director Lokesh Gupte. With his popular films like AB Aani CD, Ek Sangaychay, Runanubandh, Datebhet and Mungala, Lokesh has carved a niche as a director in the film industry. He is all ready to set a milestone with yet another out-of-the-box film in the form of Ashwath. The film will be released in the winter of 2022.

The teaser and the poster of the Ashwath has already created a buzz in the industry. The audience is eager to watch Swwapnil Joshi in his new role in the forthcoming film; however, the information about the film, its cast and crew members has been deliberately kept under wraps. Nevertheless, the coming together of Swwapnil and Lokesh is going to be a real treat to the Marathi audience.

I hope 2022 is better than the roller coaster that 2021 was-Swwapnil Joshi

Mihir Bhanage (BOMBAY TIMES; January 1, 2022)

From amplifying SOS requests, to taking care of his family and resuming work, 2021 was a year that saw Swwapnil Joshi do multiple things. Like everyone, the actor, too, had his share of highs and lows. So, how would he sum up 2021?

He says, “Personally, I went through the same things as everyone else — anxiety, lows — because the future was uncertain. Already a year had gone by since the Coronavirus pandemic in 2020 and no one knew what else would be in store. The year was extremely tiring, hectic and unnerving. My kids are 5 and 3 years old; we couldn’t explain to them what was happening, why there was a lockdown, why they couldn’t go down to play. The good thing was that all of us at home stayed healthy. Plus, I got time to bond with the kids because I was home. Professionally, it was very different. MX Player’s Samantar 2 became a hit, I was also doing Chala Hawa Yeu Dya, then Bali released. I think barring being on stage, I did everything else this year. To sum up, I think 2021 was a roller coaster filled with mixed emotions.”

Talking about venturing into the OTT space, Swapnil adds, “The OTT space was going to be dominant in a few years, but the pandemic sped up the process as everyone started consuming content at home. Global avenues opened and viewers, including me, got a variety of content to choose from. For makers, it opened a treasure trove. There were stories that were not fit for the traditional platforms; they couldn’t be turned into TV serials that went on for 600-700 episodes, nor could they be adapted into plays or movies. OTT platforms gave ample scope and freedom for such stories to be turned into web shows.”

The actor is hopeful that 2022 will be better than the previous two years. He says, “I hope we say goodbye to the COVID-19 pandemic this year. There’s always the hanging sword of new variants and spike in cases which I genuinely pray we bid adieu to in 2022 at least. On the work front, two films that I had shot earlier will be released. I will start working on two web series, and I want to do either a play or a limited-episode serial on TV. I have turned entrepreneur and my new venture will launch soon. Let’s see how things shape up and what 2022 has in store. ”

Maharashtra Governor Shri Bhagat Singh Koshyari launches logo of Swwapnil Joshi and Narendra Firodia’s ‘1 OTT’

Maharashtra Governor, Honorable Shri Bhagat Singh Koshyari, launched the logo of ‘1 OTT’, a joint venture of leading film actor Swwapnil Joshi and noted industrialist-philanthropist Narendra Firodia, on December 1, 2021. The OTT (Over The Top) platform will cater to the regional content covering all major Indian language and thus would truly become ‘Apne Bharat Ka Apna Mobile TV’.

Honourable governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari after unveiling the logo of ‘1 OTT’ at a glitterati function held at Raj Bhavan said, “I congratulate Shri Swwapnil Joshi ji, Narendra Firodia ji and his team members on the occasion of the launch of the unique platform. I wish them and the venture every success in the endeavor undertaken,” he said.

Along with the Joshi and Firodia, the OTT platform has been supported by noted name in DTL activation Vinayak Satpute, founder members Venkatesh Shrinivasan, Rajiv Jani, leading banker Satish Utekar, noted name in entertainment industry Chetan Maniar and their team members; all of them were present for the launch.

Swwapnil Joshi, the household name with his variety of roles in the films and serials and Narendra Firodia, a noted industrialist-philanthropist, were separately planning to launch the OTT for a long period. When they came to know about each other’s plan, they decided to join hands and launch it on the larger scale and change the definition of the regional content the way it is being presented today.

“I was thinking about starting the OTT for the last two years as I was looking to do something different to grow as an artist. We wanted to give a good OTT platform to the people. In the meantime, I discussed the venture with Narendra Firodia with whom I share very good relations for the last few years. When I learnt about his plans to launch OTT for regional languages content, we decided merge both the ventures,” said Swwapnil Joshi.

“Not only the regional languages in India, but even foreign language content can be added in future on the platform. We have a very good team of leading people from this field intending to form a global entity. We are happy to launch it today. We are looking forward for out of the box entertainment for the people across demographies,” Joshi said.

Narendra Firodia said, “The lockdown saw the launch of many OTT platforms catering to various genres of the content. India is a huge market for the contents on OTT and it has been proven in the last two years. Since the regional languages were not getting the due participation on these platforms, we decided to launch ‘1 OTT’ for the content in Indian languages. The platform will benefit the contents from all the Indian languages. We are aiming at giving quality content in Indian languages to our viewers and that way it will be India’s OTT.”

Shri Satish Utekar said, “The OTT space is heating up. As a true blue banker, I see a great future for the platform for the decades to come. We at ‘1 OTT’ are bound by the belief that entertainment needs to be affordable and a solid business model. As a Founder Director, I will try my best with the help from the team to achieve sustainable growth in the space. We are 1 and we have just begun!”

Chetan Maniar has the experience of more than two and half a decade in Pay TV industry and has successfully launched multiple linear channels and Pay TV platforms across the globe. “As a founding director, I am excited to announce the launch of the hybrid OTT platform "1 OTT - Apne Bharat Ka Apna Mobile TV" that stands for 3 Es - ENTERTAIN, EDUCATE and E-COMMERCE. The platform enables to select language of own choice for the wider audience. Presenting regional and international content in various Indian languages makes the platform unique in all aspects. It also helps connecting the audience to rich Indian culture assimilated with various languages,” he said.

Mr.Vinayak Satpute said, “1 OTT is in true sense a multi-language platform. The platform will cater to not only the urban audience, but also people in rural parts of the country. We are sure that the people from all walks of life will enjoy the content on this platform.”

Venkatesh Shrinivasan said, “As a founder member of ‘1 OTT’, I can surely say that our preliminary focus will be the rural audience in the country. After working in rural India for a long time, we felt about the need to give them good entertainment in their own language. The content is being offered in such a manner that they could watch the programs whenever they need to as per their convenience.”

Swwapnil Joshi-starrer Bali to skip theatrical release; will premiere on Amazon Prime on December 9

Amazon Prime Video today, that is December 1, 2021, announced the global release of the Marathi horror thriller Bali, starring one of Marathi cinema’s most revered actors Swwapnil Joshi, along with Pooja Sawant and Samarth Jadhav. Helmed by acclaimed filmmaker Vishal Furia, (director of Lapachhapi and its recent Hindi remake, Chhorii), and produced by Arjun Singgh Baran and Kartk D Nishandar’s Global Sports Entertainment and Media Solutions Private Limited (GSEAMS), Bali is set to premiere on Prime Video on December 9 in India and in more than 240 countries and territories worldwide.

Bali is about a widowed, middle-class father, Shrikant (Swwapnil Joshi), whose life takes an unexpected turn when his 7-year-old son Mandar (Samarth Jadhav) collapses and is referred to a Jan Sanjeevani hospital for a detailed diagnosis. Things change when Mandar starts talking to a mysterious nurse, who he claims is staying in the abandoned part of the hospital.

“Amazon Prime Video has always strived to bring its viewers content that stand out in terms of storytelling, layered narratives, and compelling performances,” said Manish Menghani, head of acquisition, India content, Amazon Prime Video. “Following the love that consumers have showered on Chhorii, we are thrilled to continue our association with Vishal Furia, who is attempting to redefine the horror genre in India. With a stellar cast, including Swwapnil Joshi, Bali adds further value to our ever-expanding language content portfolio.”

Director Vishal Furia added, “As a genre, I have been drawn to horror and it’s been my constant effort to break new ground with every film in this space. The best kind of horror films are psychological, which create empathy for characters despite their basic premise being far from reality. The more we believe what we are watching, the more immersive the experience becomes. This is exactly what Bali is about, dealing with a gamut of emotions, fear being the biggest among them all. I would like to thank producers Arjun and Kartk for believing in the work I do. After the overwhelming response to Chhorii, I am looking forward to audiences’ reaction to this film upon its release on Amazon Prime Video.”

Producers Arjun Singgh Baran and Kartk D Nishandar of GSEAMS stated, “There is no denying that horror as a genre appeals to a vast expanse of audience. However, it calls for a lot of authenticity and precision in the narrative to become a success. With Bali, our attempt has always been to present new-age content that is immersive and appealing to the audiences. We are extremely thrilled that we will be able to take this story, steered by director Vishal Furia, who specializes in this genre, and woven with brilliant performances by versatile actors like Swwapnil Joshi and Pooja Sawant, to a global audience through Amazon Prime Video.”

Bali will join the thousands of TV shows and movies from Hollywood and Bollywood in the Amazon Prime Video catalogue. Hopefully, this Ganesh Chaturthi will bring the pandemic to an end-Swwapnil Joshi

Titas Chowdhury (HINDUSTAN TIMES; September 10, 2021)

This marks the 71st year of Ganpati festivities at Swwapnil Joshi’s home in Mumbai. The actor shares that the festival holds a rather special significance in the Joshi household. He says, “My grandfather had promised to bring Bappa over to our house if he had a son. Toh papa ke janam se Ganesh ji ka baithna shuru hua humaare ghar pe.”

Welcoming the idol and then immersing it happens in a rather unusual way in his family. Talking about how the same idol is worshipped every year, Joshi says, “Ten years back, eco-friendly Ganpati idols became a trend. That’s when we did away with the regular mitti ka murti and we got a panchdhatu murti (a five metal alloy which is considered to be auspicious). We do His aagman at the balcony or the main door of our house. Then we immerse it in a tub. After that, we clean it and put it back inside the showcase.” He adds that the drill is followed to keep the idol in his home throughout the year.

Much like every year, the Samantar actor says that the celebration will span across one-and-a-half days. However, he will miss catching up with friends and relatives: “Earlier, about a thousand people would come to our home to visit Ganpati. Chatting over good food helps everyone bond. But the norms haven’t been eased for festivities to happen in Maharashtra yet.”

As Joshi looks forward to two days of no work, keertans and ukadiche modaks prepared by his mother, he prays for a time that is free of the Coronavirus. “I genuinely believe that Bappa is the harbinger of new beginnings. Hopefully, this Ganesh Chaturthi will bring this health crisis to an end. If all of us pray hard. He will listen to us,” he ends.

Swwapnil Joshi and industrialist Narendra Firodia join hands to launch ‘OTT of India’

Leading film actor Swwapnil Joshi and industrialist Narendra Firodia have joined hands to launch an Over The Top (OTT) platform, which will cater to the regional content at a greater level. Soon to be launched, the venture is expected to prove an ‘OTT of India’ for the films and series in regional languages including Hindi, Marathi, Bengali and others.

Swwapnil Joshi, the household name with his variety of roles in the films and serials, was planning to launch the OTT by his company Tamora Digiworld and has been working on it for the last one and a half years. Similarly, Firodia was also planning a OTT platform for the content from Marathi, Guajarati and other languages. The duo, stalwarts in their respective fields, have now decided to join hands to launch the platform and thereby change the definition of the regional content the way it is being presented today.

“I was thinking about starting an OTT platform for the last one and half years as I was looking to do something different to grow as an artist. In the process, Tamora Digiworld was formed after few of us like-minded people met. We wanted to give a good OTT platform to the people. In the meantime, I discussed the venture with Narendra Firodia whom I shared very good relations since the last few years. Our wavelength matches on many levels including business aspirations, principles among others. During the discussion he told me that even he was planning to launch Letsflix, the OTT platform for regional languages content. After deliberation, we decided to join hands and launch the OTT on a bigger scale by merging both the ventures,” said Swwapnil Joshi.

The actor said that since two big ventures are coming together the OTT launch will be much bigger that will cater at the world level. Not only the regional languages in India, but even foreign language content can be added in future on the platform, he said. “We have a very good team of leading people from this field intending to form a global entity. The formal announcement on the name of the venture, date of the launch will soon be done,” he said.

Narendra Firodia
said that instead of competing with each other, they decided to come together and launch it on a huge canvas. “The lockdown saw the launch of many OTT platforms catering to various genres of the content. India is a huge market for the OTT content and it has been proven in the last few years. Since the regional languages were not getting the due participation on these platforms, I decided to launch Letsflix. After announcing Letsflix we were in the process of launching it when I learnt that Swwapnil Joshi too was thinking on similar lines. We met and decided that instead of competing with each other, joining hands will help us in launching it at a greater level,” he said.

Narendra Firodia added, “We are aiming at giving quality content in Indian languages to our viewers. This will be India’s OTT and we are working on those lines. We will soon announce the modalities about the platform.”

Actors don’t make images, audiences do-Swwapnil Joshi

Known for his romantic outings in Marathi cinema, Swwapnil Joshi says Samantar 2 changed viewers’ perception of him
Letty Mariam Abraham (MID-DAY; July 20, 2021)

Leaving behind the candyfloss romantic stories of Marathi cinema, Swwapnil Joshi chose the dark and compelling Samantar for his web debut. The actor is back with the second season, which he describes as a “pacier thriller”. In a chat with mid-day, he opens up about the pressures of doing a sequel and how it has opened more doors for him. Edited excerpts from the interview:

It has been a long wait for the second season.
The first season premiered in March 2020. The second instalment was slated to premiere much earlier, but we had to push the shoot due to the pandemic. I had to put on weight for the second part. We had taken a logistical break, which got extended because of the ongoing situation. We finally shot between October and December 2020.

Was it challenging to revisit the character?
I have revisited characters in the past, including in Mumbai-Pune-Mumbai [2010]. In the film, I played the boy-next-door, which was a character that the audience could relate to. But here, it was difficult to imbibe the characteristics of Kumar Mahajan [his character in Samantar] again.

Did you feel the pressure of matching up to the first instalment?
I would be lying if I said there was no pressure. But, after a point, the pressure takes a backseat, and you concentrate on the work at hand.

How has your first brush with digital entertainment been?
When you do television or films, there are many external factors that [influence] how you depict your story. But on the web, you have the liberty to tell stories as they are meant to be told; [the narratives] have realism to them. That attracts me to the web, as an actor.

You’ve been in front of the camera since you were a child artiste. What do you think was the turning point in your career?
There have been quite a few. I did [a spate of shows] like [Uttar] Ramayan, Krishna and Amanat. Then there was a phase when I ventured into comedy with Comedy Circus. Post that, I did Marathi films, anchored musical reality shows, and now [have graduated to] the web. I believe my career has undergone a transition every four to five years.

Do you feel you got bracketed as the romantic hero? Did Samantar help you shed the image?
Actors don’t make images, audiences do. Those who like my romantic performances prefer seeing me in similar roles. Now, a lot of people tell me that I should do more [projects] like Samantar. It changed people’s perception of me, and I am being approached for genres that [makers] earlier didn’t consider me for. [The show] has opened a lot of doors for me.

Samantar has been dubbed in other regional languages, thus transcending language barriers.
[By dubbing], I think the linguistic charm goes away. That said, I also feel gratified. MX Player never treated Samantar as a Marathi series, instead promoting it as a big show. When I saw people lapping up Samantar in Telugu or Tamil, it felt good to know that finally my writers, technicians, directors and authors in Marathi are getting a wider audience. A lot of non-Maharashtrians would now be able to consume the material, and I am proud that I was one of the mediums to enable that.

Samantar 2 receives overwhelming response with 56 million plus views on MX Player

Repeating the response it received for its first season, the second season of Samantar has received more than 56 million views since its launch on MX Player. Post the success of Samantar season 1, the season 2 was released on MX Player on the July 1, 2021. Produced by leading content producing studio GSEAMS (Global Sports Entertainment And Media Solutions Private Limited) headed by Arjun Singgh Baran and Kartk D Nishandar, the web series has become talk of the town. Apart from talented actors like Nitish Bhardwaj, Swwapnil Joshi and Tejaswini Pandit who added quality to the series, the second season also features the talented silver screen sensation Sai Tamhankar.

“We were sure about the success of Samantar 2 as it is a perfect combination of everything. I am overwhelmed with the response the series has received in its second season as well. I am happy that the new experiments I have been doing in my career are working and people are giving it thumbs up. The credit of this success must go to producers Arjun and Kartk along with the director Sameer Vidwans for the efforts they have put in both creatively as well as ensuring the quality of the shoot,” said Swwapnil Joshi who plays the lead character of Kumar Mahajan.

Swwapnil also narrated how the entire team of actors and crew members were stuck in a hotel during the shooting of Samantar 1 due to the flooding. “Kolhapur and Sangli had witnessed downpour and flooding in August 2019 when we were shooting for Samantar 1. The downpour was so massive that the entire team was stuck for 13 days in a row in a hotel in Kolhapur. However, Arjun, Kartik and the team ensured that we were all taken care of very well. Those were some of the most unforgettable days and it still gives us goosebumps whenever the team members remember it during our shooting,” he said.

Speaking to us on Samatar 2, Arjun and Kartk said “Samantar is a fabulous story which we knew would appeal to a very large audience. We are extremely happy with the response that Samantar 2 has got and we intend to produce many more such series based on a variety of subjects and genres”.

The producers further elaborated on their decision over casting Swwapnil Joshi and Nitish Bhardwaj against each other. “Both of them are widely recognised as Krishna across the world for their memorable roles in two different serials. Samantar gives an opportunity to the audience to see both the stalwarts face to face. Similarly, when we chose Sai Tamhankar for the role of Sundara and Meera, we were suggested many names for this character. But we were determined to have her for the role as we firmly believed that only she could justify the character of Sundara,” Arjun and Kartik said.

GSEAMS has given us many memorable Marathi films like Mogara Phulaalaa, Bonus, Fugay, Tula Kalnaar Nahi, Ranangan and Vicky Velingkar. With the release of web series like Naxalbari on Zee5 and Samantar season 1 and 2 on MX player, GSEAMS has once again proved itself as a leading production studio which creates quality content.

Directing Samantar 2 had its own challenges, but with the help of the producers, it became a lot easier-Sameer Vidwans

Sameer Vidwans said that the challenges before him while directing Samantar 2 were numerous as it was his first time directing a web series and also because it was shot during the Coronavirus pandemic. The director has proudly said that he was happy that he could face all the difficulties successfully with the help of his stars, crew members, and from the support he got from producers Arjun Singgh Baran and Kartk D Nishandar of GSEAMS.

After an outstanding success of Samantar Season 1, with a record-breaking 200 million hits, Samantar season 2, has come on MX Player with many added attractions. Talented actors from the film industry like Nitish Bhardwaj, Swwapnil Joshi, Tejaswini Pandit and Sai Tamhankar feature in this web series which is based on the popular Marathi novel written by the late Suhas Shirwalkar.

Talking about the series, the director Sameer Vidwans said, “Samantar is a drama series which is full of thrill and mystery elements throughout the show. Samantar is originally made in Marathi and dubbed in Hindi, Telugu as well as in Tamil. We have shot the second season at various picturesque locations including Mumbai, Pune, Panchgani, Mahabaleshwar, Bhor and Kolhapur to keep the show as real as possible.”

Regarding the overwhelming response Samantar 2 has received, Vidwans mentioned that, “Both Arjun and Kartk are extremely involved creatively and are very particular on the quality of the shoot. They are always open to new concepts and ideas and they take pain to see that the ideas are well executed. On this project, they have worked closely with the actors and me and have got the best out of all of us.”

Speaking to us on Samatar 2, Arjun and Kartk said “Samantar is a fabulous story which we knew would appeal to a very large audience. We are extremely happy with the response that Samantar 2 has got and we intend to produce many more such series based on a variety of subjects and genres”.

GSEAMS has given us many memorable Marathi films like Mogara Phulaalaa, Bonus, Fugay, Tula Kalnaar Nahi, Ranangan and Vicky Velingkar. With the release of the web series like Naxalbari on Zee5 and Samantar season 1 & 2 on MX player, GSEAMS has once again proved itself as a leading production studio which creates quality content.

Marathi filmmakers change release plans after stricter COVID-19 guidelines in state

Mihir Bhanage (BOMBAY TIMES; April 12, 2021)

We had reported a few days ago that Marathi filmmakers, who had initially locked Fridays in April for their theatrical releases, had been thinking of postponing the releases of their films owing to strict Coronavirus regulations in the state. While some had deferred releases already (Zombivli, Free Hit Danka), the makers of Bali and Jhimma were ready to stick to their scheduled release dates. Then, the Maharashtra govt announced the night curfew and weekend lockdown, which included closure of cinemas halls and malls till the end of April.

Result? Three more Marathi films – Jhimma, Bali and Godavari – that were to hit screens this month have been postponed.

Jhimma director Hemant Dhome and Bali producer Kartik Nishandar had earlier told us that they were willing to go ahead despite the double-trouble of lesser shows and 50 per cent seating, because they didn’t want to delay their films any further. But, in a video shared a few days ago, the team of Jhimma said, “The film was ready, the teaser was out, and people were looking forward to watching it on the big screen. But the rising cases of COVID-19 and newer restrictions have led us to take a short break from meeting you at the cinemas. But, we’ll see you soon.”

Bali was touted to be the first Marathi film with a big star, Swwapnil Joshi, to hit screens after cinemas resumed functions a while ago. Speaking to us, Swapnil shared, “Honestly, now it’s all a game of wait and watch. We will release Bali in cinemas only, but when, well that’s a question we don’t have an answer to. Everything depends on the government guidelines. Till then, patience is the only virtue we need to abide by.”

Another much-awaited film that was eyeing an April 30 release was Godavari. The Nikhil Mahajan-film with Jitendra Joshi, Gauri Nalawade, Neena Kulkarni and Vikram Gokhale in pivotal roles, too, was deferred a few days ago with Nikhil and Jitendra sharing a heartfelt message about the same on social media. “The film is very close to all of us and we were looking to release it one day before Maharashtra Day (May 1). But, not anymore. Looking at the rising cases, restrictions and closure of cinemas, we are not even announcing a new date right now. Godavari has been postponed indefinitely and we’ll decide on a date when things are better,” Nikhil told us.

In the current scenario, it looks unlikely that filmmakers will announce new release dates anytime soon. Even if restrictions are eased in the coming months, there’s a backlog of films waiting to release. Filmmaker who’ve made their films only for the big screen aren’t contemplating OTT releases yet, but only time will tell if that decision will change.

Check out the intense look of Pooja Sawant in the new poster of Bali

One of the most beautiful and talented actresses in the Marathi film industry, Pooja Sawant, is all set to impress her fans once again with her appearance in the forthcoming Marathi film Bali. Pooja is playing a doctor in this horror flick.

Produced by Arjun Singgh Baran and Kartik D Nishandar of GSEAMS (Global Sports Entertainment and Media Solutions Private Limited), Bali is all set to release on April 16. Bali has been directed by Vishal Furia, and features Marathi superstar Swwapnil Joshi in key role.

Known for her rom-coms and dramatic films, Pooja Sawant has been featured against one of the most successful actors from the film industry, Swwapnil Joshi. Bali is her second film with director Vishal Furia after Lapachhapi, which was applauded by audience and critics as well. Producer GSEAMS released a fresh poster of the film featuring Pooja holding a stethoscope in her hand and giving an intense look.

Speaking about her role in Bali, Pooja says, “Yes, I am a part of Vishal’s second Marathi film as well. It is always great to work with a director who has a clear vision and knows what he is upto. Being part of the film is icing on the cake as I am sharing the screen with Swwapnil Joshi for the first time. I always wanted to work with Swwapnil, one of the most talented actors from the industry.”

"It has been a great experience working for Bali, for two reasons. Firstly, Vishal is a director who knows how to carve out 100% of the capacity of the actors he is working with and secondly, the role I am playing in the film. The character of the doctor I am playing is equally important and an integral part of the story. Like his first successful thriller Lapachhapi, Vishal has done a fabulous job as a director. Believing his directorial ability witnessed myself during making of Lapachhapi, I immediately said yes to him when Vishal asked for this film,” the actress said.

Pooja has proved her talent by playing characters with different shades in the films like Kshanabhar Vishranti, Dagdi Chawl, Bonus, Subhash Ghai’s Hindi film Vijeta among others.

Talking about Bali, Pooja said, “I am someone who, even during daytime, will watch a horror movie with all windows and doors of the house open! But after Lapachhapi, things have changed a bit. I have not only gained confidence to work in the horror films but have also started enjoying watching them. Lapachhapi was a turning point in my film career.”
