The actor says the digital medium provides room for every actor to shine equally
Rishabh Suri (HINDUSTAN TIMES; April 23, 2022)
Be it JK in The Family Man, Lolark Dubey in Asur or Sharad Bellary in Scam 1992: The Harshad Mehta Story — actor Sharib Hashmi is a force to reckon with in the OTT space. And it won’t be wrong to say the medium gave his career a new lease of life. The actor, who made his debut with the acclaimed 2012 film Filmistaan but hit a rocky patch post that, admits the digital revolution turned his life around.
“Though I did sign a few films after Filmistaan, somehow things didn’t work out the way I imagined. Career mein ek slump aa gaya tha, and then I got The Family Man, then Asur, followed by Scam 1992... I have now signed some big banner films like Vikram Vedha and Mission Majnu,” says the 46-year-old.
His portrayal of a spy alongside the protagonist played by actor Manoj Bajpayee in TFM, fetched him a lot of popularity, and proved that web shows provide room for every actor shines equally.
Hashmi agrees that the definition of a hero has changed. “The audience only focusses on the characters now, and not at who’s a hero or the supporting actor. If they want to watch a (conventional) hero, they turn to the big screen [for films] like Pushpa: The Rise, RRR and Sooryavanshi (2021). On OTT, they like to watch hardcore, realistic and engaging stuff,” says the actor.
Films have often been considered bigger than television and other mediums. So when the going was rough, was Hashmi advised to not work on the web, since it was comparatively new?
He replies, “No one advised me this, thankfully, and even if they did I wouldn’t have listened. But I was told ‘hero ke dost ka role kabhi mat karna, you will get typecast, sirf ussi type ke roles milenge’. But when I was offered TFM, my opinion changed. If it’s a role like my character, JK, main kud kud ke karunga, 50 baar karunga even if I get stereotyped!”
And, his discography is proof that he has been anything but typecast. From characters with shades of grey to comedy and action — he has touched upon multiple genres.
Ask him if there’s any particular genre he wants to try his hands at next, Hashmi shares he believes in prioritizing the script over the genre. “Maine aisa koi criteria nahin banaya hai. Never say never. I haven’t made any such plans. I just want a good script, director and production house — exactly in this order. And then the platform on which it will be aired,” he shares.
With such meaty parts in popular web shows coming his way, has his value as an actor increased? He shares, The medium you work on does not decide your market value. How well you negotiate, does.”
If it’s a really good character but the money paid is less, I do it-Sharib Hashmi

For actor Sharib Hashmi, doing a good role in a small film is preferred over a boring role in a big film any day. It’s not the screen time but the role that matters to him.
“Main zaroor woh small film karunga, lekin woh character karne ki meri ichha bhi honi chahiye. I don’t have to be visible in every frame, I don’t care about that. The role is very important. But, it also isn’t necessary that just because the role is meaty, I will do it, it should be a complete package,” he says and adds, “Paisa bhi bahut important hai.”
The actor, who has appeared on popular shows such as The Family Man, Scam 1992 and Asur, is now set to share screen space with Hrithik Roshan and Saif Ali Khan in Vikram Vedha. This makes one wonder if he does big films sometimes for the money he gets, so that he can later do smaller, but meaningful projects where the money isn’t much. In the past, actors like Nawazuddin Siddiqui have confessed that they do this.
The 46-year-old replies, “I can’t divide things like this. Nawaz sir is in a different league, I haven’t reached that position yet where I can look at such things. For me, it is about how badly I want to do a role, be it mainstream or independent. In fact, every film has its own budget, so the remuneration can be high at some places, low at others. If it’s a really good character but the money paid is less, I do it. Small or big film doesn’t matter.”
Mere hisaab se jo thode bahut log self-censorship karenge, woh achha bhi hai-Sharib Hashmi

Actor Sharib Hashmi, who is known for playing JK in the popular web show franchise The Family Man, has worked extensively on OTT. He has also been a part of shows such as Scam 1992, Asur, to name a few. The one thing he supports is no censorship on this medium.
However, he is okay with cutting down on strong language and unnecessary nudity. “Mere hisaab se jo thode bahut log self-censorship karenge, woh achha bhi hai. One should be a bit responsible as well. The voice that a maker has should not get drowned under censorship. That is my only concern. Baaki gaaliyaan kam kar do, nudity kam kar do, mujhe koi problem nahi hai,” says the 45-year-old, who has joined the cast of Vikram Vedha with actors Hrithik Roshan and Saif Ali Khan.
He believes it depends on the makers and how much they are willing to let go. “We didn’t have any unnecessary elements in The Family Man. Raj and DK (Raj Nidimoru, Krishna DK), who directed the show, were very responsible filmmakers. For instance, there was a controversy right before the release of the series (around the depiction of the Tamil community). They based the entire plot of the second season on intensive research. Aisa nahin hai ki kuch bhi script likh di. Similarly, aisa kuch bhi nahin kar sakte jisse koi community hurt ho,” he says.

Happy to play JK again, Sharib Hashmi says no changes were made to 'The Family Man 2' after I&B Ministry’s regulations
Letty Mariam Abraham (MID-DAY; June 8, 2021)
One of the many highlights of The Family Man is the easy banter between Manoj Bajpayee’s Srikant and Sharib Hashmi’s JK, be it while they munch outside a vada-pav stall or just minutes before a hostage situation. Ask how it feels to be a much-loved spy, second only to Srikant, and Hashmi says that it’s sheer joy to reprise the role of JK. As the second season opens to glowing reviews, the actor discusses his on-screen chemistry with Bajpayee, discovering Chennai during the shoot and how they have “stayed true to the story”.
Edited excerpts from the interview.
The second season was deferred several times.
I was heartbroken every time the show was pushed [to a later date of release]. Everyone is happy that it’s finally streaming. We started shooting for the second season even before the first instalment was released. Amazon Prime Video was confident of the series and had given a go-ahead for its sequel. We wrapped up the shoot in 2019.
A chunk of the season has been shot in Chennai.
Thanks to The Family Man 2, I made my first trip to Chennai. I am a huge fan of Tamil cinema. Kamal Haasan is one of my favourite actors, and I love listening to A R Rahman and Ilaiyaraja’s compositions. I have been watching Tamil cinema since the early Doordarshan days. On our days off, we went to Marina beach. I wanted to see Kamal sir’s house, but couldn’t manage in the time available. The food in Chennai is amazing, especially at the Andhra mess.
Did you face the language barrier?
I haven’t grasped the language, which often caused miscommunication. Most locals don’t know English or Hindi; we mostly talked in sign language.
How have the dynamics between Srikant and your character changed this season?
In season one, I was like Srikant’s shadow. Here, I am left alone and tasked with a mission. The chemistry between Srikant and JK was already set [in season one]. It became easier this time because now, we have an off-screen bond.
This season was also challenging because I had to pull off some action sequences. For a scene, I had to scale a wall and fall on the other side. It was a simple stunt, and the production team had laid out cushions to ease my fall. But I landed on my chest and suffered an internal injury. The pain lasted for months.
The series has a lot riding on it. Did you feel the pressure of the sequel?
When we were shooting, we never let the pressure overwhelm us. We didn’t work as per what worked in the first instalment. We stuck to the storyline and were always true to the subject. I hope we can make three or four more seasons as I am not done with JK yet.
Were any changes made to the script after the I&B Ministry’s new regulations?
We completed the shoot much before the new [regulations] came up. We didn’t reshoot any part of the show. Frankly, I haven’t read the new guidelines yet, so I’m not aware if we’ve flouted anything.
What is the status of your other projects, Dhaakad and Mission Majnu?
I have completed my portions in Dhaakad, but have some shooting left for Mission Majnu. I am doing another series titled Six Suspects, which is directed by Tigmanshu Dhulia. I will reunite with Pratik Gandhi [after Scam 1992] on the project.
