Kolkata doctor rape-murder case: Rimi Sen demands death penalty

Rimi Sen takes fraud case fight to Bombay High Court over Rs 4.14 crore loss

Yashika Mathur (HINDUSTAN TIMES; August 16, 2024)

Actor Rimi Sen, who grew up in Kolkata, expresses grave concern over the recent alleged rape and murder of a postgraduate trainee at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in her hometown. Sen has called for stricter legal measures, insisting that the perpetrator should face the death penalty.

"I think isko death penalty milna chahiye, iss aadmi ko, jo bhi responsible hai. Stricter laws se bhi zyada stricter punishment honi chahiye ke log dare aisi harkat karne ke pehle (I believe that this person deserves the death penalty. The punishment should be so severe that it deters others from committing a such heinous acts)," Sen asserts.

The 42-year-old actress, known for her work in Bengali films such as Sajani and Swapner Din, argues that lenient punishments embolden criminals. She advocates for India to adopt a system similar to Dubai’s, where capital punishment is imposed on rapists.

"India ko Dubai jaisa rule follow karna chahiye. We lack them (stricter laws and punishments) because here, power games and connections often help people get out of such situations. No matter how much we protest, things will not change," she laments.

Rimi Sen laughs off plastic surgery rumours: "It’s only Botox, fillers, PRP; surgery karne ki zaroorat nahi padhi"

Rimi Sen laughs off plastic surgery rumours: It’s only Botox, fillers, PRP! Surgery karne ki zaroorat nahi padhi

Rishabh Suri (HINDUSTAN TIMES; August 6, 2024)

She’s been out of the limelight for years now, but a random Reddit post brought Rimi Sen right back into it. Once her latest pictures started circulating on social media, the actor was trending all day. It was her altered looks that led people to believe she had gone under the knife.

As we reach out to her, she laughs, “Agar logon ko aisa lag raha hai ki maine plastic surgery karvayi hai... if it’s in a good way, it’s very good for me. Bina plastic surgery karaye hi log bol rahe hain. I have only got fillers, Botox and PRP (Platelet Rich Plasma) treatment done, nothing else.”

The 42-year-old, who has been a part of many films including Dhoom (2004), Golmaal- Fun Unlimited (2006) and Johnny Gaddaar (2007), adds, “One shouldn’t need to get plastic surgery done unless they are on the run after committing a crime! There are so many good doctors outside India who are very good at facelifts. I, too, want to get it done, but I will think about it once I turn 50. Abhi inn sab se kaam chal raha hai.”

Sen goes on to say that she currently has two doctors she consults for her beauty treatments. “They help me look good. Shayad logon ko meri latest pics mein skin texture achha lag raha hoga. Anyone can look good by using these things, and having discipline. But if you are calling what I have done bad, then tell me how can I correct it, so I can tell my doctors where they are going wrong (laughs),” she says.

Mere furniture roles hote the, says Rimi Sen on absence from films amid legal trouble

Mere furniture roles hote the: Rimi Sen on absence from films amid legal trouble

Rishabh Suri (HINDUSTAN TIMES; June 23, 2024)

Star of Hungama (2003), Dhoom (2004), Deewane Huye Pagal (2005), Phir Hera Pheri and Golmaal: Fun Unlimited (2006) — and away from the spotlight for the past 13 years — actor Rimi Sen has come out of her hibernation. The 42-year-old is in the middle of a legal issue and alleges losing Rs. 4 crore to a con man.

“He pretended to be a rich businessman and took Rs. 4 crore from me in parts since 2020, promising to return it with a high interest. He started making excuses after taking the money, claiming his family got Covid-19 and then he had to go to Canada,” she shares, adding that the case was transferred to the authorities some time back, and a chargesheet will be filed soon. “A warrant will be issued against that man for cognisable offence,” Sen says.

Even as the investigation goes on, we ask the actor about her disappearance from films. “Main comedy films kar kar ke thak gayi thi, there used to be not much of a role for me there. Mera sirf furniture role hota tha. I had a good role in only a few, like Hungama and Johnny Gaddaar (2007). The latter didn’t work, and that’s the kind of work I wanted to do,” she tells us.

Did she find herself in circumstances where she was replaced or her role cut due to someone not being happy with her success? “Stakes are really high in this industry. Talent come later — you should first know how to handle people. Otherwise kuchh nahin ho sakta, talent pada rahega store room mein. Mujhe nahin aata tha bechna, PR karna,” she signs off.

‘Jab tak gidgidao nahin, help nahin milti hai’
Sen resurfaced in 2015, for the reality show Bigg Boss and because of her co-production, the National Award-winning film Budhia Singh: Born To Run. Having worked with A-listers such as Akshay Kumar, John Abraham and Ajay Devgn, is she still connected with people in the film industry? “I am not. I can’t ask anyone for help. Jab tak gidgidao nahin, help nahin milti hai. Why won’t other people look for their own benefit? Why will someone go out of their way to help someone?” she asks.

Rimi Sen duped of Rs 4.40 crore; Khar police files FIR

Actor Rimi Sen duped of Rs 4.40 cr, Khar police files FIR

THE TIMES OF INDIA (March 31, 2022)

Mumbai: Khar police registered an FIR against a man for allegedly duping Bollywood actor Rimi Sen (Subhamitra) of Rs 4.40 crore. Ronak Jatin allegedly duped Sen after she was offered high returns if she invested in his new company that dealt in LED lights.

Sen, who owns Mamlo Film Production house in Khar (W), complained that she met Jatin in 2019 at a gym where “he came with the offer after we became friends. He promised a 40% profit on the due date if I invest in his company,” she told police.

Police said the actor, who resides in Andheri (W), filed the case after the suspect ignored her calls when she started asking for the money. “Sen realised that she was duped when she verified details and learned that Jatin never started any company,” said the police. Sen appeared in Baghban, Dhoom, Garam Masala, Kyon Ki, Phir Hera Pheri, and Golmaal: Fun Unlimited (2006). She also participated in a reality TV show.

Bollywood actor Rimi Sen filed a police complaint against an acquaintance for cheating her of Rs 4.40 crore. After a written complaint was filed at the Khar police station a few days ago, the police filed an FIR on March 29.

In her written complaint, Sen mentioned that she met the accused, Ronak Jatin, goregon resident at a gym in Andheri three years ago, and the two became friends over months.

Sen informed the police that Jatin claimed to be a businessman and had opened a new company of LED lights. He then offered Sen to invest in the company for a return of 40 per cent. After she decided to invest the money, they drafted an agreement.

When the deadline of the investment ended, Sen asked for her profit, but Jatin started ignoring her calls. She then learnt that Jatin did not start any such business. After realising that she had been cheated, Sen filed a police complaint.

After investigation, the Khar police have registered a case against Jatin under various sections of the IPC, including 406 - Punishment for criminal breach of trust and 420 - Cheating and dishonestly inducing delivery of property.

"We have registered a complaint and are tracing the accused," said a police officer from the Khar police station.

Sen is an actor-producer, who has appeared in Hindi, Telugu and Bengali films such as Hungama, Baghban, Dhoom, Garam Masala, Kyon Ki, Phir Hera Pheri, and Golmaal. She also participated in the reality television show Bigg Boss in 2015.

I quit Bollywood because I was done playing glamourous flower pots in films-Rimi Sen

Renuka Vyavahare (BOMBAY TIMES; April 8, 2021)

She was seen in several multi-starrers and comedies in the 2000s, be it Dhoom, Rohit Shetty’s Golmaal, Hungama, Phir Hera Pheri and Baghban, but years ago, Rimi Sen disappeared from films and quietly turned producer. Her 2016 biographical film Budhia Singh - Born To Run, starring Manoj Bajpayee was critically acclaimed and won prestigious awards. A decade after her exit, Rimi is now all set to return to acting.

In a chat with Bombay Times, she says, “Acting pays well and gives you immense fame. I could survive for a decade because of my former career as an actress and I will always respect that. People invite you for events and ribbon cuttings and actors get paid well for it. I could become a producer because of my film career, and the work I did in my 20s. All of this was possible because I was an actress and a known face.”

Brutally honest, Rimi admits though that acting wasn’t her passion initially, it grew on her. She says, “I was a classical dancer and acting came naturally to me. It was the only thing I could do. I couldn’t finish my graduation so there were no jobs for me. I enjoyed acting, but I was put off by the fact that actresses were mostly used as furniture in most commercial films back then. Today, you see a blend of entertainment and meaningful content and people aren’t labelling actors or putting them in a box. Everyone can do everything. In my time, there was no creative satisfaction. I quit Bollywood because I was done playing glamourous flower pots in films.”

Rimi adds, “It was boring to be solely used as a glamour prop or be told to take a hankie and fake-cry in the background while the hero took centre stage. I want to make a comeback, not for survival, but be proud of the films I do. I am proud of films like Johnny Gaddaar and Sankat City, which I did, but sadly these films didn’t do well. Thankfully, filmmakers have a different vision now and the audience’s outlook towards cinema and content has also evolved. People are more open to new ideas.”

One can believe the Bong beauty when she says, she wasn’t cut out to adapt to a work culture of diplomacy. Now in her late 30s, the actress says she is wiser. “The biggest lesson that I learnt from my younger self is the fact that you cannot have the ‘my way or highway’ attitude in any line of work. You have to find a midway. Burning bridges every time things don’t go your way isn’t the solution. I wasn’t diplomatic and didn’t have filters. I would say what I wanted to and that’s not how you can survive in any profession. Networking is equally important. I wasn’t good at it. Of course, throughout my limited career, I did make some good friends who I can still rely on and won’t hesitate to ask for work,” she concludes.

Bollywood mein PR aage hai and talent peeche-Rimi Sen

Kavita Awaasthi (HINDUSTAN TIMES; March 22, 2021)

Recently, some glamorous and stylish photos of actor Rimi Sen popped up on social media, making netizens take notice of her. Sen says, “I have invested in my mind, body and look. Having good looks isn’t enough; one has to be mature as well and all these years away from the industry gave me clarity.”

The 39-year-old debuted in films in 2000 and was part of successful films such as Dhoom (2004), Garam Masala (2005) and Phir Hera Pheri (2006). “Earlier, in my career, I was disappointed as I didn’t get good opportunities, so I quit acting. I got disconnected with Bollywood as I had not done anything memorable,” says Sen.

The actor adds that even today, movies are “male-dominated”. “But during my time, films were made for men and women were furniture in them. Today, we have good content. Women have much more to do and stories are character-driven, so age doesn’t matter,” says Sen.

Additionally, the actor rues the fact that female actors have a shorter shelf life in the industry. “I wasn’t fit back then so I had an inferiority complex working with other heroines who were fit. But now, things have changed and 50-plus actors are also getting good roles,” she says.

Talking about her new look, she says, “I want to give acting another shot. In this industry, 99.9% luck matters and PR and lobbying solid hai toh you will make it. Talent sabse peeche hai. Luck favoured me a lot but my PR was bad. Now, I know what I want in life.”

Nana Patekar was short-tempered, but he is not a sexual offender-Rimi Sen

Renuka Vyavahare (BOMBAY TIMES; September 28, 2018)

Actress Rimi Sen, who was the lead heroine of Horn ‘OK’ Pleassss, speaks about her experience of working with Nana Patekar. She recalls her time on the set of the film, which has once again run into controversy owing to Tanushree Dutta’s claims that she was sexually harassed by Patekar.

“My experience of working with Nana was all good, except that I felt that he was slightly lonely in his life, which is why he sometimes got a bit frustrated. He was short-tempered, but he is not a sexual offender. Yes, I noticed that he loved the company of women, maybe because he was lonely. But if you are asking me if I faced any physical or indecent advances from him, let me clarify that he always treated me very well, in fact, he treated me like his daughter. Also, we should know his side of story, before jumping to any conclusion. I feel, a lot depends on the women of the industry and their ambition. If you are talking about the #MeToo movement, there are many offenders, including the 90s stars.” The actress cited her own example, saying, “I was not overambitious... that’s why I avoided them. That’s why I couldn’t do much, even though I deserved a lot, but I have no regrets as I made my choices consciously.”

Talking about women being exploited in the industry, Rimi added, “It’s not just actors, there are many directors and producers who tend to take you for a ride, but again, only if you are willing to go ahead. Speaking up about one person will only stop an individual, while everything will go on as it does behind closed doors of this industry. Power jaha pe hai, waha yeh sab chalta rahega, it depends on whether you resist it or you want to go with the flow.”

Speaking about the specific incident that Tanushree has resurrected after a decade, which she had spoken about in 2008 as well, Rimi said, “Tanushree is a good girl and she is honest. She has never craved unnecessary attention by blaming people without any reason. If she has claimed this thing, she maybe right but it depends on exactly what resulted to that incident between Nana and her. With me, he has never done that. During that (song) shoot I was not there, as I wasn’t a part of that song, so I can’t tell what exactly transpired on that day. I can only speak about my experience of him.”

Rimi Sen knows how to take care of herself-Mother Sanghamitra

Upala KBR (DNA; October 28, 2015)

It has never happened in the history of Bigg Boss, now in its ninth season. No BB contestant has been so disturbed about being locked indoors that he/she has pleaded with the host to send them home. While interacting with host Salman Khan over the weekend, actress Rimi Sen broke down and begged him to allow her to go home. She was not happy about having being saved from elimation, even though she made it clear from day one that she wanted to leave the show (but can’t because of a stringent exit clause).

Surprisingly, even when she went into the Bigg Boss house, no one from her family came to see her off. The actress has no siblings, lost her father a few years ago and lives with her mom Sanghamitra in Mumbai. While Rimi’s breakdown was distressing for viewers and people from the industry who have known and worked with her, her mother is unfazed. Sanghamitra, who stays with the actress in Andheri tells us, “I watch the show every day so I don’t miss her. Also, I’ve heard that she’s getting lot of votes.”

About her daughter sobbing on national television, even as Salman tried to console her. Mama Sen says, “Salman bheeshon bhalo manush (Salman is a wonderful man)! Rimi has known him since the Kyun Ki days. I am a very practical person. I didn’t cry when I saw her crying. Rimi has always been a strong girl, independent and confident by nature, even as a child. She’s a national scholar, has learned dancing since the age of three, is an accomplished Odissi dancer and has been working since she was 14. She has always made her own decisions. I am sure she knows what she is doing and how to take care of herself.

She adds that she wouldn’t like to advise Rimi on anything. “She is a big girl. Who am I to give her advice? Even if I did, it wouldn’t get through to her as she has no connect to the outside. I came to know that she had signed up for the reality show only when the producers came home to get the contract signed. I don’t want to interfere in her life in any way. She has always been like my guardian angel, even as a child...”

When asked why she was absent on the first day of the show, she shrugs, “I am a very religious person and we had Mahalaya then (the week before Durga Puja). I have also taken initiation (diksha) from the Ram Krishna Mission and am involved in their work. I am busy with that.” She adds, “There are many cameras inside the house that everyone comes to know what’s happening.”

Does she miss her daughter? She says, “If Rimi got married and went abroad after that, it would be the same, no? Of course, not that it would happen — Rimi has no desire to get married.” Would she like her to stay till the end? “It depends on her. Rimi is an intelligent girl and she will decide what she wants to do. While she has friends, nobody is very close. Even I am like that.” Would she enter the BB house when asked by the channel, Sanghamitra replies unequivocally, “No.”

Rimi Sen resurfaces as Subhamitra

Renuka Vyavahare (BOMBAY TIMES; February 26, 2015)

Rimi Sen, who had disappeared from the film circuit for years after doing movies like Dhoom, Golmaal: Fun Unlimited, Baghban and Johnny Gaddaar, has resurfaced. Recently, the actress made her debut on a social networking site as Subhamitra Sen. She is seen connecting with her friends and posting selfies on the site. When contacted, Rimi confirmed to us that Subhamitra is her original name, but didn't elaborate on why she went back to it.
