Mogambo’s tailor, netas’ favourite: Meet the dressmaker of icons

Madhav Agasti has stitched clothes for Amrish Puri, Bal Thackeray, Pranab Mukherjee, Narasimha Rao, L K Advani…. He’s been a friend of Sanjeev Kumar, Dev Anand, Mehmood. Farooq Abdullah discovered his tailoring skills in 1984 and never left him. After 50 years, Agasti is still going strong and is full of stories of the people he met and dressed
Sharmila Ganesan (THE TIMES OF INDIA; August 31, 2025)
Madhav Agasti’s mobile rings as we step into his tailoring shop in Bandra. “Farooq Abdullah,” Agasti tells his son, Shantanu, before answering. The first time he had met Abdullah, then the chief minister of Jammu & Kashmir, was in 1984. Agasti was at the Delhi airport, and so were Abdullah and Congress’s NKP Salve. Salve was in a bandhgala and Abdullah had admired the cut. And that is how the serendipitous meeting took place. Spotting Agasti, Salve introduced him to Abdullah. Then things moved fast. Agasti requested Abdullah to accompany him to the VIP lounge. Out came Agasti’s measuring tape — he always carries one — and the measurements were done. What followed a few days later was an impeccable sherwani. Abdullah was impressed. He ordered a suit next, then a pathani, followed by a safari suit. “He remains my client to this day,” says Agasti.
Agasti’s 76 now. And had invited Abdullah to his Andheri home for Ganeshotsav. But Abdullah called because he thought he would not be able to make it. But he’s promised to be back soon for new measurements.
Nagpur To Bombay, Via Calcutta
Agasti’s father was a bhikshuk in Nagpur, a wandering monk who stitched coats for a lawyer named Shewde. Agasti’s ambitions were likely sparked by his father’s skills. He left Nagpur for Calcutta, a young man in his early 20s. He found himself a job as a “cutter” in the city. Then he travelled to Moradabad to learn how to stitch sherwanis and then to Mhow, a cantonment town in MP, to study how to make military uniforms. He travelled back to Calcutta, and, this time, landed a job at a tailoring counter because he could speak English.
In 1973, he moved to Bombay. “I was smoking outside Citylight Cinema in Mahim when I noticed a man with scissor marks on his hand, the hallmark of an assistant tailor. He worked at Super Tailors, dressmakers to Hindi film actors,” recalls Agasti. Soon enough, Agasti landed himself a job there.
A door had opened for him. But what worked wonders was his learning from Mhow; 14 years later, that would catapult him to even higher tailoring fame. He stitched the military uniforms for the 1973 film, ‘Dhund’. And Danny Dengzongpa, who played the role of a cruel, wheelchair bound husband of Zeenat Aman in the film, loved the tailoring.
Agasti had been noticed. His star was on the rise. Plus, his Nagpur-honed Hindi was good, and so was his Marathi. He quickly began to acquire admirers.
Actor Sunil Dutt was the first to suggest that he strike out on his own. “There were no Maharashtrians in tailoring then,” Agasti says. He set up a small shop in Dadar in 1975. Word spread fast. Soon, ministers Vilasrao Deshmukh (“he loved safari suits”), Gopinath Munde, Pramod Mahajan (“he wore kurtas without pockets”), Sharad Pawar and Lal Krishna Advani (“three-button jackets”) were clients.
Through lawyer Shirish Gupte and theatre veteran Mohan Wagh, he met Bal Thackeray in 1981. “Balasaheb asked me to design clothes in such a manner that his legs wouldn’t show in photographs,” says Agasti. He crafted a white kurta-pyjama that became the late Shiv Sena chief’s signature look. “I got him a shawl from Kashmir. He mostly preferred white and off-white,” adds Agasti, himself in off-white shirt and pants today “because this way, I don’t have to worry about combinations”. Thackeray nicknamed him “Rajshimpi” (politicians’ tailor).
Mogambo… Khush Hua
But you could also call Agasti a film stars’ tailor. Last month, he received the Bharat Gaurav Award at the UK Parliament in London for designing Amrish ‘Mogambo’ Puri’s unforgettable costume in the 1987 blockbuster, Mr India, and also Bal Thackeray’s signature kurta-shawl look.
He is now preparing for the release of his memoir, ‘Stitching Stardom’. The book traces his journey of image-making across comedians and chief ministers, prime ministers and presidents. Much has changed in tailoring — technology, speed, the churn of fast fashion — and much hasn’t. “Earlier it was about who you knew,” says Agasti. “Now it’s word of mouth.”
As tea is served for unannounced guests — BJP’s Raghunath Kulkarni and former national secretary Sunil Deodhar have arrived in the shop — the septuagenarian darzee holds forth on his craft, his clients, and his takeaways from 50 years of dressing up the who’s who.
“Contrary to perception,” he says, “politicians are the easiest clients and the best paymasters.” Many believed his “lucky hand” made their measurements special. As he reminisces about designing costumes for five villains in Anil Kapoor’s ‘Ram Lakhan’, his eyes settle on the crisp shirt Kulkarni is wearing. “The linen suits you,” Agasti says. “It’s linen?” asks Kulkarni. “Yes, and the American cut sits well,” replies Agasti, seated in the shop he opened in Bandra in Nov 1985, its launch postponed by 15 days to mourn the death of his friend Sanjeev Kumar.
Dev Anand would sneak in through the back door, head bobbing, calling out: “ Ey Madhav, kya banaya hai mere liye?” while Sunil Dutt preferred the front, greeting him warmly as “Madhav Seth”. He even kept a special stool for Mehmood, who would arrive most evenings, leaving the tailors in stitches with his antics.
But the costume that cemented his name in Bollywood lore was Mogambo’s in Mr India. The now-iconic piece with its high-collared military cut and gold trimmings was meant to project both colonial grandeur and zamindar-like menace. Puri, who exclaimed “Mogambo… khush hua” on seeing it (here, in the Bandra shop), wore it with relish. “I worked with him from his first film till his last. After he passed away in 2005, I slowly stepped away from films,” says Agasti, who found the era of menacing villains fading from the silver screen. Soon, it was in politics, rather than films, that his reputation as a tailor of image flourished.
A Politicians’ Tailor
From the dhoti-kurta and Jodhpurs era to the rise of the suit-boot and back, Agasti has seen political sartorialism in India come full circle. Various chief ministers, prime ministers and presidents — including Pranab Mukherjee — have taken oath in his creations. The busy Narasimha Rao would often be exercising on his stationary bike at 6 am when Agasti would get an appointment with the silk-jacket-favouring polymath.
Someday soon, he hopes to tailor PM Narendra Modi’s clothes. “I’m a big fan of Narendra Modi ji,” he says. “He dresses sharply, always to suit the occasion.”
Today, as he marks half a century in the trade, the shop is lined with mementoes. Pride of place goes to a cap gifted by former Army Chief Manoj Mukund Naravane upon retirement. “Clothes make the person,” says Kulkarni. “By that measure, he (Agasti) is a personality builder.”
Deodhar sizes him up as a “self-made man with networking skills and a sharp memory,” adding one enduring quality: “He calls himself a tailor with pride at a time when many look down on the profession. And… he always has a measuring tape handy.”
People kept tossing me around like a ping pong ball-Jackie Shroff

Actor Jackie Shroff says he has never refused any roles, big or small, and keeps experimenting to stay relevant
Rishabh Suri (HINDUSTAN TIMES; April 12, 2023)
Staying relevant isn’t easy for an actor, but Bollywood’s bindaas bhidu, Jackie Shroff, even after spending close to four decades in the film industry, continues to stride ahead successfully.
Ask him what the secret is, and the 66-year-old, who is currently working on a film that stars Suniel Shetty, Sunny Deol and Mithun Chakraborty, laughs: “I have no idea. I kept playing around and experimenting. Be it a police officer or a crook, or even Sai Baba in films (or taking up varied projects including) Ram Lakhan (1989), Khalnayak (1993), Mission Kashmir (2000). People kept tossing me around like a ping-pong ball. I didn’t go against the tide; I flowed with it and respected my technicians.”
The times were different earlier, he acknowledges. “The producers would come to us (actors) with either a simple love story or to play a good cop. I’d never refuse. I don’t care about my role; I look at the project in its totality. It doesn’t have to be that I sing a song or get a good line. I am part of a chair, and who sits isn’t important. If one of the legs isn’t there, you will fall,” he says, adding, “I have had the opportunity to work with some great directors, and now I am getting to work with some great youngsters.”
His biggest takeaway is that he got to learn a lot from people such as the late actor and filmmaker Dev Anand. “Dev sahab got me a role in Swami Dada (1982) and made me realise what ethics are. Someone shouted at me, but he said, ‘Naya ladka hai, seekh jaayega’. Look at that concern about protecting a young artiste. (Filmmaker) Subhash Ghai, when I worked with him in Hero (1983), guided me in my first shot. I had to drive a jeep, and he told me, ‘I had to do the same thing, but I broke the set of Aradhana (1969)’. He made himself fall down to make me feel that if you do fall down, it doesn’t matter. Those are things I learned from my seniors; I didn’t put anyone down to become big,” he smiles.
Whenever I picturised a dance number, I always remembered what Pandit Birju Maharaj taught us-Subhash Ghai

Filmmaker Subhash Ghai on how the legend influenced classical dance numbers, including Madhuri’s Bada dukh dina, in his movies
Upala KBR (MID-DAY; January 18, 2022)
Over 30 years since the release of Ram-Lakhan (1989), people remember Madhuri Dixit dancing to Bada Dukh Dina — a song immortalised by Lata Mangeshkar’s beautiful rendition, choreographer Saroj Khan’s steps and the leading lady’s grace. But little do people know that the inspiration behind the dance was Pandit Birju Maharaj, the doyen of the Lucknow gharana of Kathak.
Subhash Ghai, who directed Ram-Lakhan and is known for his keen ear for music, recounts, “It was initially difficult for Madhuri to pick up the steps. She said, ‘Sir, I am not able to get Saroj’s form of dance and expression.’ I advised her to watch Saroj’s eyes and face to understand the emotions she is trying to convey, rather than [following] her body movements. After that, Madhuri learnt the steps quickly. I had learnt this [trick] from Birju Maharaj. The maestro has been a major influence in the dances in my movies.”
Ghai counts himself among the fortunate to have interacted closely with the Kathak legend over the years. While he never got the opportunity to collaborate with Maharaj, chance meetings with him were enough to shape the filmmaker’s ideas about the art form. “My first learning was during a college festival when he performed a romantic conversation between Lord Krishna and Radha. We had all gathered at night in a hall — actors, directors, dancers and students. He came, chatted with us, and then spontaneously performed for us. Birju ji showed us, expressing entirely through his eyes, how Radha is upset with Lord Krishna, and he pacifies her. We couldn’t stop clapping at the end of the performance. He told us then, ‘Dance is expressed through the eyes. Our body has a limited language of bhavnayen [feelings] and mudras.’ Since then, whenever I picturised a dance number, I always remembered what he taught us.”

There was a time that I had a cop uniform in my wardrobe that I’d simply wear and go to set-Jackie Shroff

Jackie on playing brother to Disha Patani in Radhe - Your Most Wanted Bhai
Uma Ramasubramanian (MID-DAY; May 16, 2021)
Until we point out the off-pairing of him and Disha Patani as siblings in Radhe-Your Most Wanted Bhai, Jackie Shroff says the ambiguity around their age difference never crossed his mind. “Now that you brought it up I am thinking of my age,” teases Shroff, adding that it is tough for an artiste to survive in the industry if they are concerned with trivial matters.
For Shroff, whose actor-son Tiger is dating Patani, the recipe for success has always been paying heed to the director’s requirements. “I go on set and you will see a different side of my personality. I mould myself as per the director’s needs. I don’t consider the relations. If we think about the emotion, we can’t work. Listen to your director, work and leave. If you are capable of working, walking, and acting, be grateful.”
The actor has reprised his role as a cop in the film that has, so far, garnered mixed reactions. While Shroff has dabbled in several genres, playing the role of a police official has always been special. “In films like Ram Lakhan, and Khalnayak, I have donned uniforms. In fact, there was a time that I had a cop uniform in my wardrobe that I’d simply wear and go to set because only the names of my characters would differ. The role has stayed with me, and I choose to not change myself because I don’t want to tax my brains to get an Oscar. In Radhe, my character is the one who brings comic relief.”
Saroj Khan made me look like a dancer on screen-Anil Kapoor

As told to Roshmila Bhattacharya (MUMBAI MIRROR; July 4, 2020)
My association with Saroj ji started in the late ’80s, on the sets of Karma. Subhash ji (producer-director Subhash Ghai) and she shared a great tuning, which was evident when she choreographed songs like “De Daru”. We were simultaneously working on the Mr India songs, like “Karte Hain Hum Pyaar Mr India Se”, “Zindagi Ki Yahi Reet Hai” and the unforgettable “Kaate Nahin Kat Te”. In the ’70s and the ’80s, our songs were overshadowed by the action; Saroj ji, a fan of yesteryear actresses like Vyjayanthimala ji and Madhubala ji, brought old-world charm and grace back into filmi naach-gaana. In “Kaate Nahin Kat Te”, we tried to recreate Kishore Kumar and Madhubala’s chemistry.
A year after Mr India, Tezaab released. Madhuri (Dixit) was still a relative newcomer when we handed her over to Saroj ji. After two weeks of rehearsal, she called Chandra (director N Chandra) and me to Satyam Hall and Madhuri performed to “Ek Do Teen” for us. I was blown over by the moves and the energy. We shot the song in Mehboob Studio and watching it, I was like, “Oh God, what do I do!” I got them to shoot a male version with me which was not there in the script in front of where Shah Rukh’s (Khan) bungalow stands today.
Subsequently, Saroj ji directed me in several other chartbusters, including Ram Lakhan’s “My Name is Lakhan” and “O Ramji”, “Dhak Dhak Karne Laga” in Beta and Taal’s “Ramta Jogi” to name a few. They were all a team effort, with huge contributions from the directors, the composers, the lyricists, and of course, the cinematographers. Ashok Mehta and Baba Azmi lit up the screen beautifully in the close-ups and framed the long shots beautifully, thereby enhancing Saroj ji’s choreography.
My leading ladies, including Sridevi, Madhuri, or Aishwarya (Rai) were fabulous dancers while I’m technically not a dancer-dancer. So, I’m grateful to Saroj ji that on screen I did not come across as any less. She was aware that my style came from within and knew what I was capable of. She played to my strengths and presented me in a way that I looked both romantic and macho.
When I was in acting school, I’d learned that in Bollywood choreography, we have pure dance and playback choreography. She excelled in both, her mastery over the latter helping me tremendously. Thank God for Saroj ji, who made me look like a dancer on screen. Her contribution to my career was immense. She was a genius and couldn’t work with anyone mediocre. She had great leadership qualities, evident in the way she dealt with the dancers, filmmakers, and artistes. I will always remember her beautiful smile.

Despite having two left feet, Anil Kapoor says Saroj Khan made him feel like a dancer
As told to Upala KBR (MID-DAY; July 4, 2020)
Saroj ji [Khan] was meant to give several more years to Bollywood. Her contribution to cinema is something no choreographer can match in one lifetime. She changed the craft by bringing back the old-world charm.
Subhash Ghai and Saroj ji were magical and often chose to work together. We were introduced during the filming of Mr India with Sri [Sridevi] and Tezaab [with Madhuri Dixit-Nene]. Madhuri was just starting her career when she recorded the song Ek do teen by Laxmikant-Pyarelal. Saroj ji had choreographed [the number]; N Chandra [director-producer] and I had gone to Satyanarayan hall to catch a glimpse of it. Like a proud guru, Saroj ji asked Madhuri to perform the entire song in front of us. Considering Madhuri had rehearsed extensively, she aced the entire number in one shot. I gained tremendously from her as these songs [have now] become iconic, which invariably lead to the success of the film. [There were times], when I'd be on set to watch, admire and appreciate them even if I was not required for the shoot.
Cinematographer Baba Azmi and Saroj ji were a lethal combination. Once they took over, the directors had to take a backseat. Kaate nahin kat te from Mr India and Dhak dhak from Beta were the fruits of their effort. While shooting for [the song] Dhak dhak, our aim was to make it as appealing and passionate as the song Kaate nahin kat te, which is one of my favourite numbers.
Saroj ji always maintained a beautiful element in her choreography; she would ensure to produce sensual numbers with dignity and aesthetics. [There was a notion] that make male actors required a male choreographer, but she gave me some iconic numbers like Ae ji o ji [Ram Lakhan], Ramta jogi [Taal], Karte hum pyar Mr India se [Mr India], which was originally inspired from Kishore Kumar and Madhubala's film [Chalti Ka Naam Gaadi, 1958]. After Kaate nahin kat te, my favourite choreography includes Hawa hawai, Ek do teen, Ae ji O ji, Humko aaj kal hai [Sailaab]. During a song shoot, when the original choreographer couldn't make it, Saroj ji promptly responded, came on set, choreographed the number by morning and we were ready to shoot by afternoon.
I remember shooting a song for Jamai Raja [1990] on the train in Ooty and Sunita [wife] had accompanied us. When I expressed my desire to give Saroj ji gurudakshina, Sunita explored all the vintage shops and bought a beautiful necklace for her. It was such a simple gesture, but Saroj ji was so emotional and moved by it. That was her innocence. She would translate her beautiful smile and twinkle in the eyes through us on screen.
I never felt short-changed when I was paired opposite Madhuri or Aishwarya [Rai Bachchan]. Saroj ji brought out the masculinity with the gait and dance. She knew me and where my capabilities lay. She was aware that I was not a dancer, but brought out the best in me despite my two left feet. I am eternally grateful to her.
Mirror Exclusive: Anil Kapoor and Jackie Shroff come together for Subhash Ghai's crime comedy

Frequent co-stars and long-time friends play 50-year-old cops in Subhash Ghai’s next, a crime-comedy
Natasha Coutinho (MUMBAI MIRROR; June 10, 2019)
Almost six months after Anil Kapoor was quoted as saying at an event in Nagpur that a reunion is on the cards with his Ram Lakhan and Parinda co-star Jackie Shroff in 2019, and a filmmaker has already approached them with a proposal. Mirror has learnt that the duo will be next seen in Subhash Ghai’s upcoming directorial.
According to a source close to the development, the film is scheduled to take off in the next few months and is titled Ramchand Kishanchand. “It’s a crime-comedy that tells the story of two 50-year-old cops and is slated to go on the floors in Mumbai later this year,” the source added.
Incidentally, Jackie had played a honest police officer, Ram, and elder brother to Anil’s corrupt cop Lakhan in the 1991 Ghai directorial. When contacted, the 62-year-old actor refused to divulge any details, simply saying, “It’s always a ‘yes’ for a Subhash Ghai film.” The filmmaker added, “We have been working on various scripts for Anil and Jackie and have liked one.” Anil chose not to comment.
The actor-duo’s last big film together was Lajja in 2001, followed by Shootout at Wadala in 2013, in which Jackie had a guest appearance.
Simmba is completely different from that of Singham. Simmba is an anti hero-Rohit Shetty

Shetty on how his latest cop is an ‘anti-hero’, and why Ranveer is perfect for role
Sonil Dedhia (MID-DAY; December 20, 2018)
With his Singham franchise, Rohit Shetty has given Bollywood fans one of their favourite onscreen cops. Now, the filmmaker has made Ranveer Singh don the khaki uniform for his latest offering, Simmba. While comparisons are inevitable, Shetty insists the two protagonists are as different as chalk and cheese. “If I had to make just another cop film, I would have made Singham 3; after all, it is already a big brand. Hopefully, Simmba too, will become a brand. The character and universe of Simmba is completely different from that of Singham. Simmba is an anti-hero. He is dishonest, notorious and accepts bribes until circumstances change him.”
Shetty says the role of Sangram Bhalerao — complete with his cheeky attitude and quirks — is tailor-made for Singh. “When I had narrated the story line, Ranveer had loved it. He heard the final draft later. We were lucky that we had him on board right from the beginning so that we could mould the character in a particular way. Today when I see Simmba, I don’t think anyone else could have pulled it off,” says the filmmaker.
While Singh has expressed his admiration for the director on numerous occasions, Shetty too heaps praise on his leading man. “I haven’t seen a guy with so much positivity. Ranveer can keep the audience riveted with his performance.”
Not too long ago, he had announced the Ram Lakhan remake. However, it had to be put on the backburner as no two actors were apparently ready to share screen space. But Shetty is hopeful that his ambitious remake will be realised. “Karan [Johar] recently asked me about the Ram Lakhan remake. I told him that I will make it when I get the instinctive urge to do so. We have a draft ready and the day I feel, I will start. It has not been shelved. I haven’t decided what my next will be, but it won’t be a sequel to any of my previous films.”

In 2019, we will do a film together, say Anil Kapoor and Jackie Shroff

Bollywood’s Ram-Lakhan share some special secrets on their visit to Nagpur
Nitin Mankar and Vinita Chaturvedi (BOMBAY TIMES; December 8, 2018)
Sanskrutik Mahotsav (cultural fest) has started in Nagpur and this annual event, which has become a part of city’s winter milieu, saw Anil Kapoor and Jackie Shroff attend the inaugural event recently.
These two actors are still quite popular; this fact was evident from the number of people present at the Ishwar Deshmukh College Ground in Hanuman Nagar, the venue of the cultural fest. And when they arrived on the stage, people went berserk. Taking the lead, Anil Kapoor shared some old secrets. “I have always been a huge fan of Jackie’s dressing style; I borrowed his trousers and wore them in Virasat and they have remained in my cupboard for the last 21 years. Since Virasat was a huge hit, I have treasured them as my lucky mascot.”
Not one to stay behind, Jackie took the mike and reveal a secret about his bhidu. “During one of the shoots of a film, Anil actually hit me across the face and I nursed the hurt for days,” he shared, making Anil laugh.
Elder of the two, Anil got emotional speaking about his friend. “I have so many friends, but Jackie is really special. Not many people know that I’m the Ram (from the film Ram Lakhan) in real life and Jackie is more like Lakhan,” he said. Agreeing with this, Jackie added, “We are so proud that our friendship has stood the test of time.”
When asked if they plan to do a film together anytime soon, they said, “In 2019, we will definitely do a film together; a filmmaker has already approached us with a proposal. You will soon hear something positive on this front.”
Happy to dance as some of their popular film numbers played in the background, the two actors got a lot of ceetees and applause. Here, Anil Kapoor won hands down although Jackie tried his best to match steps with his buddy.
They saved the best for the last and said, “We have come to Nagpur after a long gap and the city has completely changed. We are really impressed that it still remains a major cultural hub of India. The onus lies on us to treasure this rich heritage and history.”
Younger actors should do more two-hero films - Salman Khan

Nayandeep Rakshit (DNA; November 11, 2017)
Multi-starrers in Bollywood have been a rage right from the ’60s. Whether it’s Waqt, Deewar, Sholay, Amar Akbar Anthony, or Chandni, these movies were loved by the audiences. The trend continued in the ’90s, too, when every year there would be a handful of films starring two of the reigning superstars of that era sharing screen space. Darr, Karan Arjun, Jeet, Ishq, Chal Mere Bhai were among those that worked their magic at the box office. Over the last few years, however, such projects have lessened. Speaking about why that has happened, Salman Khan says, “The prices (that heroes demand) have gone high and we don’t have such budgets. Hence, the recovery will be impossible. For a two-hero film, everyone has to cut their prices drastically. If the dates permit, then fine, but otherwise, asking actors to cut down their fee is also not right. Also, for any big film, you will need 150 days to shoot. Even something on the scale of a Karan Arjun would need that much time. But if the film is divided, into 30-35 days shoots, you can still think of doing something like that. For example, we can make an Andaz Apna Apna now. It may not be possible with Aamir, Shah Rukh or me, but the younger generation can still do it.”
Be secure
The Gen-Y brigade seems to be a little concerned about issues like bigger roles and prominence. Rohit Shetty had announced that he had to scrap his remake of Ram Lakhan because no two actors were happy with their screen time. Yes, there’s Gunday starring Arjun Kapoor and Ranveer Singh, or Brothers with Akshay Kumar and Sidharth Malhotra, Dishoom starring Varun Dhawan and John Abraham, and Padmavati with Ranveer and Shahid Kapoor, but these examples are few. Salman says, “There can’t be insecurities creeping in. If you’re confident about yourself and your position, you shouldn’t feel like that. We also were young stars when we did films together. We were friends and all this never took over our friendship. The young generation needs to realise this.” He cites his own example and says, “There was a time when my career had dipped. I was not being cast for solo hero films, I piggybacked — I jumped on to Sunny (Deol) and Sanju’s (Sanjay Dutt’s) backs. I did a film with Rahul Roy and lots of other people, too.”
He reasons, “The most sensible thing to do is to realise that meri picture chal nahi rahi hai, so I should rather do a two-hero film and make it work. Once the film works, I’ll start getting back films the way I used to, when my career was shining. That is exactly what I did and the younger generation doesn’t understand that.” Salman’s advice for the next breed of actors comes with a logical explanation of statistics. “They are doing well for themselves, two guys or three guys get together for a film, and if the casting is superb, then instead of them individually doing Rs 60-70-100 crore each, their film together will straightaway touch the Rs 150-200 crore mark.” Point noted.
But will he too say yes to a film, that stars any of his other contemporary stars? Salman nods with a smile, “I would love to work with everyone I’ve worked with again. Whether it’s Sunny, Sanju, Ajay, Akki, Shah Rukh or Aamir I would definitely do a film with them. But my character and their characters should be superb. The point is people are not writing like before anymore. Previously, the writing would give way to all of us saying yes to a film, without thinking that we won’t have anything to do in a film. The scripts were like that. Today, the seniors are very big stars and they are heroes, so if there’s nothing for them to do, to take the film to them is not right again.”
Happy Birthday Madhuri Dixit: Here's what made dhak-dhak girl rule the hearts of her fans

Charting the rise and rise of the actress who ruled hearts for close to three decades, dazzling with her beauty on screen and off it
Subhash K Jha (DNA; May 15, 2017)
It’s hard to imagine Dixit as being 50. But then you see how beautifully she has aged, and how fabulously she has managed her life, and you know 50 is just a number that the ageless beauty has encountered in her beautiful journey of life.
Madhuri’s beginnings as an actress could never have indicated how far she would go. Her rise was not meteoric, but slow and steady. She started her career modestly in a Rajshri film Abodh in 1984.
Then came Tezaab (1988) and the hit song Ek Do Teen, that turned Madhuri into a superstar. Director N Chandra recalls, “When we were shooting the song, we knew something extraordinary was happening. Madhuri was electric on camera. Saroj Khan, who is a hard taskmaster couldn’t stop praising her. We knew Madhuri was going to be a superstar beyond any.”
Showman Subhash Ghai and the subsequent Ram Lakhan (1989) turned the tides of Madhuri’s career. The number Bada Dukh Dee Na was the first time that Lata Mangeshkar sang for Madhuri. “I felt I was finally a full-fledged heroine only after Latabai sang for me,” Madhuri had told this reporter once. The nightingale would go on to sing 16 songs for Madhuri in her most iconic film Hum Aaapke Hain Koun..!
Her journey after Tezaab and Ram Lakhan (1989) was rapid, swift and sure-footed. People like Subhash Ghai (Ram Lakhan, Khalnaayak) Boney and Anil Kapoor (Pukar), Rahul Rawail (Anjaam), Indra Kumar (Beta, Dil), Rakesh Roshan (Khel, Koyla) cast Madhuri in roles that gave her immense commercial clout and a reputation for delivering measured, graceful deep performances.
Sooraj Barjatya’s Hum Aapke Hain Koun..! is to Madhuri’s career what Mother India was to Nargis or Mughal-e-Azam is to Madhubala. It iconised the dancer-actress beyond all definitions of celluloid fame. Among those who were lifelong fans of Madhuri and the historic film was artiste and painter M F Husain who saw the film 67 times and directed a whole film Gaja Gamini dedicated to her beauty.
Sanjay Leela Bhansali confesses he’s an ardent Dixit fan. “Madhuri is magic on screen. I couldn’t think of casting anyone else as Chandramukhi in my Devdas. She was my first and only choice. Devdas couldn’t have been made without her. I wanted her for my first film Khamoshi: The Musical. But things didn’t work out at that time. As a filmmaker, it was very important for me to work with Madhuri. She is a complete actress. A skilled dancer and superlative actress,” says Sanjay Leela Bhansali.
In 1999, Madhuri married the US-based doctor Sriram Nene and migrated to Denver. Their marriage was a success because as she jokingly once mentioned, he had not seen any of her films and was not besotted by her. Madhuri decided to return to India in 2011.
At 50, her beauty and grace craves for a Bridges Of Madison County. Instead, she gets a Gulab Gang. Here’s hoping that some enterprising filmmaker would write a role that does justice to her beauty.
Yes, I am planning a movie with Ranveer Singh-Rohit Shetty

Natasha Coutinho (MUMBAI MIRROR; May 10, 2017)
Rohit Shetty admits that right now he’s going crazy. While filming Golmaal Again in Hyderabad and Goa, featuring Ajay Devgn, Tabu, Parineeti Chopra, Tusshar Kapoor, Arshad Warsi, Shreyas Talpade and Kunal Kemmu, he’s was also brainstorming on his upcoming reality show, Khatron Ke Khiladi (KKK), which he is hosting in its eighth season. “I’m shooting Golmaal Again till May 17 and the following morning I’m taking off to Spain for KKK. Once I’m back in July, I’ll resume shooting for the film for another 10-15 days. We have to be ready for a Diwali release,” he rattles off.
He’s glad that a clash with the Robot sequel, 2.0, has been averted with the makers of the Rajinikanth-Akshay Kumar starrer pushing the release to Republic Day, 2018. “My film has shaped up well and I’m glad we have a good window to add to the business. All the Golmaal films have come on Diwali,” he points out, adding that they’ve been having so much fun that recently when it was just Ajay and Shreyas on the set, they whined that “mazaa nahin aa raha hai” and asked him to call the others even if they were not needed.
Buzz is, he’s planning to collaborate with Ranveer Singh for a film next. The filmmaker confirms this, saying, “Yes, I am planning a film with Ranveer Singh, we are in talks.”
Rohit’s last release, Diwale, the Shah Rukh Khan, Kajol, Varun Dhawan and Kriti Sanon-starrer, met with a lukewarm response. He admits that if he could revisit the film, he’d do things differently. “We should’ve stuck to our original script. We changed it too much. We shouldn’t have done that. But such things happen,” he shrugs.
Will he team up with SRK again? “Right now there’s Golmaal Again and KKK, after that there another film. Maybe in the future,” he muses, admitting that even the Ram-Lakhan remake has been put on the backburner. “I’ll be doing something else soon, after that we will make that announcement.”
He goes on to acknowledge that after Bol Bachchan was aired on TV recently, people have been asking him about this sequel too. “I waited for the right script for Golmaal, ditto Bol Bachchan,” he says.
For now Rohit is excited about taking over from Arjun Kapoor, who hosted KKK last season, and insists that this did not create any bad blood between the two. “Arjun actually called to ask me what he should say at the press conference and I told him to say that he was going to be hosting the show in the seventh season because I was busy with Dilwale,” he says.
He adds that his role on KKK goes beyond that of a host and he’s involved in every aspect, right from the planning stage. Also, there is an emotional attachment because in the time lag before the show re-launched. “We worked on everything, from the stunts to the humour. I am busy this year too but I had to do it. I’m personally associated with the stunts and that works for me as well as the show in a big way. If you are not involved in the stunts, then it’s just another show where you give your comments and sit quietly,” he reasons, saying he is looking forward to making wrestler Geeta Phogat do stunts. “I haven’t interacted with any of the contestants yet. I want them to be surprised with what we have planned in Spain.”

MUMBAI MIRROR (April 30, 2016)
Following reports that Rohit
Shetty is remaking Subhash Ghai's 1989 drama, Ram Lakhan, Anil Kapoor
has said that Ranveer Singh would be the ideal choice to play Lakhan in
it. “I am hearing about the remake for the last three and a half
years. I think they are still making it,“ the Dil Dhadakne Do actor
said, adding that he'd been a part of films over the years for which he
thought he deserved an award but never received any. Then, there were
others where he won unexpectedly.
“I had thought that I should've got an award for Ishwar, Ram Lakhan, because people'd say back then that popular films should be awarded. Even for Lamhe I didn't get many important awards.“

Shahid Kapoor to play Ram, Ranveer Singh to play Lakhan in Ram Lakhan remake?

Gaurav Dubey (MID-DAY; April 25, 2016)
Ever since a remake of the Jackie Shroff and Anil Kapoor starrer Ram Lakhan (1989) was announced, there have been speculations about the cast of the film. While Varun Dhawan, Arjun Kapoor and Ranveer Singh were front-runners for Lakhan’s role, Ranbir Kapoor, Hrithik Roshan and Sidharth Malhotra were being considered for Ram’s part.
Now a well-placed source in the production team of the film informs us that the makers have locked Shahid and Ranveer to essay the roles of Ram and Lakhan respectively.
Says a source, “Out of all the names being tossed for Lakhan’s part, Ranveer was the first choice. Also, last year Anil Kapoor, who played Lakhan, had said that Ranveer was perfect for the role. As for Ram’s character, it was decided that Shahid would be an ideal pick. The actors, however, have not signed on the dotted line.”
Adds the source, “The makers are looking for fresh faces to essay Madhuri Dixit and Dimple Kapadia’s characters and the project is likely to go on floors by end of the year. Once everything is finalised, an official announcement will be made.”
When contacted, director of the remake, Rohit Shetty says, “I am still working on my script. Nothing has been finalised yet.”
Today, Pardes can be counted among Shah Rukh Khan’s Top 5 films-Subhash Ghai

Subhash Ghai on the importance of following the director’s vision
Upala KBR (DNA; March 17, 2016)
Follow my vision
The filmmaker reveals that he has been writing a script for his next directorial for two years now, but it is nowhere near complete. He says, “I have to be happy about it. If I’m not, I won’t direct it. And if I don’t get the right kind of actors, I won’t start the film. The actor must suit the character. While making Ram Lakhan during the first schedule, distributors from Mumbai, Delhi and Kolkata didn’t buy the film as the Anil-Jackie combination had given a few flops earlier. They were willing to buy the film at half the price I asked for. They later repented when the film became a big hit. I never thought ki ye actors bikega hai ya nahi. It is my responsibility that they give the best performances of their lives. And that will happen if the actors follow my vision of storytelling. Like in Pardes, Shah Rukh had to show he’s in love and yet, he isn’t. He had this restless, bubbling energy about him, but he followed my vision. Today, Pardes can be counted among his top five films.”
Writers rule!
He further adds, “If my films are being remade today, it’s because I was also the writer of the script. Shatrughan Sinha in Kalicharan, Manisha Koirala in Saudagar, Sanjay Dutt and Madhuri Dixit in Khalnayak, Jackie Shroff in Yaadein, Anil Kapoor in Meri Jung and Ram Lakhan, Mahima Chaudhary in Pardes and Dilip Kumar (who made a comeback in Vidhaata and Karma) have given some of their career-best performances with me. There’s a difference between an actor who becomes a star because of the hits he gives and one who lifts his image by doing a film like Ranveer Singh in Bajirao Mastani and SRK in Devdas. It proves that they have been directed by writers of the films and these actors have followed the vision and script of the director blindly.”
Even Spielberg made flops!
Ghai says that in his career of 18 films if four didn’t do well it was because they were ahead of their time. “My films that didn’t work were not bad. In Yuuvraaj I brought in a fusion of western and Indian classical music while I made Kisna in two languages — English and Hindi. They didn’t work. Fine, but we should remember that even directors like Steven Spielberg have made flops. My working style has always been where I have controlled and contributed in every department because I have been living with the film.” the director signs off.

The actor on being his own person and making career choices that work for him
Harshada Rege (DNA; December 23, 2015)
With Dilwale’s release behind him, Varun Dhawan has
begun shooting for his next film, helmed by brother Rohit Dhawan. Here,
he talks about working with family, the possibility of working with
Rohit Shetty again and his career graph, in general.
After Rohit Shetty, you’re working with your brother Rohit. What would you say is the difference between them?
There are a lot of differences. I can’t compare my brother to Rohit Shetty, because my brother has just started out whereas Rohit Shetty has nine back-to-back blockbusters. Their sensibilities are different. That’s what is interesting, because I am going from Dilwale to Dhishoom and the movies are different, so it’s more fun and challenging. The audience will get to see a different shade to me next year.
Of the Khans, whose career graph do you think is similar to yours?
I think it’s too early because I have done just five films. Maybe after 10 or 15 films you could ask me where I am headed. But I hope my career is going the Varun Dhawan way and not anyone else’s. I am trying to make my choices that way, too.
Rumour has it that you are playing Lakhan in the Ram Lakhan remake.
No, I haven’t been offered that movie. I would love to work with Rohit sir again. But I think he has other plans for that film and my slate for next year is already full.
One biopic you’d like to do and why?
A biopic on my dad’s life. I feel I have been doing the research for that for the last 28 years. Whenever people ask me if there’s a biopic I would want to do, his is the name that comes to my mind.
Sriram Raghavan had said he’ll be doing a sci-fi movie with you next. Is that happening?
It is, hopefully. I am waiting for Sriram to give me the script. He is working on it right now.
I'm open to the idea of a single-Shraddha Kapoor

Shraddha Kapoor established herself as a singer-actress despite not having any formal training in music; would love to sing and dance in every film, director willing
Roshmila Bhattacharya (MUMBAI MIRROR; July 10, 2015)
Shraddha Kapoor has
just returned from a family vacation in Hong
Kong's Disneyland and Macau to savour the fruits of
success. Her latest release, ABCD 2, has set feet tapping and cash
counters jingling, adding to her hattrick of hits-Aashiqui 2, Ek Villain
and Haider.
“I feel blessed, nurtured by the love of the audience and hope they keep buying tickets for my movies. At the same time I'm nervous and scared because I know that I'll now have to work even harder,“ she admits with a slight wob ble in her voice.
The actress dismisses reports about her playing Radha in the Ram Lakhan remake saying shortly, “I'd love to do a film with Karan (Johar) but this particular film hasn't been offered to me.“
She confirms that Baaghi and Rock On 2 are on track. “Both are very different films. I'm excited about working with Sajid Nadiadwala, Sabbir (Khan) and Tiger (Shroff) for the first time but also anxious about matching steps with Tiger who's a phenomenal dancer. And I'm kicked about making music with SEL (Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy) and singing with Farhan (Akhtar) in Rock On 2. All of us, along with the director Shujaat Saudagar, met up recently and jammed together. It was a rocker!,“ she beams.
After Galiyan (Ek Villain), Do jahaan (Haider) and Bezubaan phir se (ABCD 2), Shraddha today is accepted as a singer-actress. But she is quick to point out that she has never had any formal training in music. “But now I have started training with Samantha Edwards, a jazz singer with the most amazing voice, for Rock On 2 in which I will be crooning a few songs. I've taken about 10-12 classes with her. I hope some of it showed up in Bezubaan phir se since I had done a few sessions with Samantha when we recorded the song,“ she says.
Will we hear her in Baaghi too? “The director and I haven't spoken about this yet. I would love to sing and dance in every film if the director lets me,“ she laughs. “I have a good time in the recording studio but I'm still figuring out my voice. I'm open to learning but the composers I work with have to accept the fact that I'm coming to them untrained.“
Buzz is, Shraddha will be recording a single next year. Bring that up and she says carefully, “There's no such development right now but I am open to the prospect of a single.“
Today, it's hard to imagine that this critically acclaimed, commercially viable actress, one of the loveliest faces in B-town, was almost written off after two early misses.
Remind her of those dark days and Shraddha says quietly, “Everyone feels bad when they are low and happy when they're on a high. I have to thank my family and friends for keeping their faith in me and urging me to never give up. Today, it feels great to be sharing my success with them.“
But her father, Shakti Kapoor, is often heard cribbing these days that his darling daughter is so busy that he often has to make do with a hug. “I don't know why dad keeps saying that because he's the one who's still so busy,“ she quips. “He has been passionate about his work and driven for decades. He's the driving force behind my brother Siddhanth and me. I'm the one who sometimes has to make do with a hug.“

Shraddha Kapoor to play Madhuri Dixit's part in Ram Lakhan remake?

Nayandeep Rakshit (DNA; July 7, 2015)
Casting around the Ram Lakhan remake is all anyone
wants to talk about these days and even the actors who played the title
roles in the original — Jackie Shroff and Anil Kapoor — have picked
their favourites — Sidharth Malhotra and Ranveer Singh respectively. But
there has been little to no talk about who will play Dimple Kapadia and
Madhuri Dixit’s parts.
“People keep forgetting that along with being a two-hero film, it’s also a two-heroine project. Producer Karan Johar is keen on Shraddha Kapoor for Madhuri’s role. He’s very impressed with her performance in ABCD 2,” revealed our source from the production. Karan and director Rohit Shetty have yet to decide who to pick for Dimple’s part.
Well, one thing is for sure. “The remake will have young actors only,” Rohit Shetty had confirmed to us in an interview. “Shraddha’s riding high on her back-to-back successes and Alia Bhatt is one of Karan’s favourites. So both of them are the toughest contenders for the role. But nothing has been finalised,” our source informed us.
When we reach Shraddha for her comment, she says, “If I really want to do a film, I chase it down completely. I make sure I do everything in my power to be a part of the film. I won’t have second thoughts. I would not feel, ‘Should I call this director or producer?’ Never. That’s actually how Haider and Rock On 2 happened. It happened as a combined effort. Somebody was talking to somebody and it reached me via somebody else. So I told them, ‘Oh they want to meet me? I will call and tell them I want to meet them.’ You don’t want to lose time and lose out on a precious film. It’s very easy to gauge who is genuinely interested in working with you, right after a meeting. So then, I go by my instincts. But if you talk about trying, I do try my best to get a film if I really want to do it.”
Tell her she’s in contention for the Ram Lakhan remake and she bursts out laughing. “Really! Am I? I am not in talks with them for this film. No one has approached me yet but I would love to do a film with Dharma,” was all she would let on.

I'd cast Ranveer Singh as Lakhan in Ram Lakhan remake-Anil Kapoor

Sneha Mahadevan (DNA; June 26, 2015)
Subhash Ghai’s Ram Lakhan is one film that has stood
the test of time. Even now, when it is on TV, you will find it difficult
to take your eyes off this entertaining masala film. Love, followed by
hatred between two brothers, a tug-of-war over maa, the evil uncle and
revenge, it has all the ingredients for a Bollywood buff. Ever since
Karan Johar announced that he is remaking the film, there has been
excitement over the film’s casting. What makes the film bigger is that
Rohit Shetty is directing it.
Anil Kapoor, who played Lakhan in the film, cannot understand what the fuss is about. He says, “I never knew this film was so iconic. But I realise that now. Recently, I went on stage at the IIFA and the bloody song started playing, people reacted to me as if Ram Lakhan just released a week ago. Surprisingly, the film is very fresh in people’s minds. One of the reasons that has been, I think, is that the characters just worked; certain characters just connect.”
There is excitement — among actors as well as audiences — over which of the young dudes will play Ram and Lakhan. He says “Sometimes, even the actors and the filmmaker create a certain noise about a film, which is good, but I certainly don’t think the film is iconic. I think people who saw Ram Lakhan as kids are youngsters now. Also, all the actors who are in their twenties now, have not grown up on Deewar and Zanjeer. They’ve grown up on today’s heroes, right?”
While he hesitates to say whether it is a good idea or bad to do a remake, he feels, “Yeh remake karna, is a kind of hype. I think it’s more a business proposition than a creative proposition. It is not an artistic decision.”
So who would be his choice to play Lakhan? “I feel who is best for the film commercially, they should cast him” Push him for a name and he relents, “If I was a producer, I would cast Ranveer as Lakhan. Ram would be Sidharth Malhotra because of the intensity.”
Why not his nephew Arjun Kapoor? He does a brilliant job of it. Also, the bhatija in the chacha’s shoes would make for interesting casting, no? He says, “No. I feel Arjun can, but it will be too close. There will be comparisons. Better someone from outside the family does it. About the mimicking, both of them mimic me very well. Ranveer does my dialogues and dance movement, sab aata hai usko.”
Sidharth Malhotra would be good as Ram in Ram Lakhan remake-Jackie Shroff

Jackie Shroff feels the young actor would be apt to reprise his role as Ram in the Ram Lakhan remake
Sneha Mahadevan (DNA; June 26, 2015)
Casting around the iconic Ram Lakhan’s remake has
taken Bollywood-watchers by storm. Arjun Kapoor, Anil’s nephew is a
popular favourite to play his uncle’s Lakhan in the remake, but Anil
himself feels Ranveer Singh should play him. There is, however, little
consensus about who should play Ram’s role.
When the original Ram — Jackie — was asked about this, he says, “I think Sidharth (Malhotra) would be a very good choice. I have worked with him in Brothers and I’ve seen that he has the same level of sincerity that I had. Ram is someone who is very respectful to his mother, very loving to his brother and yet, is very strict as a police officer. He has all these qualities and I am sure will do a good job.”
With all the drama, comes the hype. And though, most actors would not be in favour of remaking their original films, Jackie is of a completely different opinion. “If an iconic film like Devdas can be remade, why not this? Besides, I have worked in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Devdas which was a remake. Brothers, too, is a remake of Warriors. It’s just the actors who change, people’s emotions don’t. The colour of tears hasn’t changed and the brother and mother relationship hasn’t changed. I like remakes and don’t think there is any harm in remaking films as long as the essence is intact,” he explains.
But is Ram Lakhan worth all the hype, we ask? “Of course, it is. Dhina Dhin Dha is iconic to this day, Tera Naam Liya is the most romantic song ever. It had Madhuri Dixit and Dimple Kapadia, two of the most beautiful women in the film. I can’t speak for Anil, but there was Jackie Shroff — the most handsome man in the film. I see no reason for the film to not be remade.”
Fawad Khan to play Lakhan in Ram Lakhan remake; will be paired opp Alia Bhatt?

After much speculation, the principal cast for the Ram Lakhan remake has been locked, say sources. The project, directed by Rohit Shetty and produced by Karan Johar, has Alia Bhatt, Fawad Khan and Sidharth Malhotra signed on to play leading roles, confirm our reliable sources.
“Recently, it was announced that Fawad, Alia and Sid had been roped in by Karan for Shakun Batra’s next — a multi-starrer titled Kapoor & Sons. However, KJo seems so impressed with the trio that he has decided to cast them together again,” said a source.
“Alia and Sid are not paired together romantically. The young actress will reprise Madhuri Dixit’s role while Sid will play Jackie Shroff. Fawad will play Anil Kapoor’s role and will be wooing Alia in the film,” our source reveals.
