My daughter would dance to Katrina Kaif’s songs, which we would record and send to her-Kabir Khan

Few know that Kabir Khan, director of films like Kabul Express, Ek Tha Tiger, Bajrangi Bhaijaan and Chandu Champion, is also a skilled dancer. He has now found a dance partner in his daughter Sairah, who has been training in several dance forms since the age of three. We spoke to the filmmaker about the dancer in him, while Sairah shared her career plans.
I dabbled in dancing a lot in DU: Kabir Khan
Talking about his love for dancing, Kabir shares, “I dabbled in dance a lot when I was in college, we had a good choreography team at Delhi University, where I graduated from. It’s safe to say we were good because we won awards at the university and in Lady Shri Ram College where my wife Mini (Mathur) studied. I spent six months on the production of the musical West Side Story with choreographer Ashley Lobo. It also featured Parvin Dabas, Gauri Khan and others, so that was a phase when I was dancing a lot. Mini showed her dancing chops on Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa, and now Sairah dances better than both of us put together. So yes, dance does run in the family.”
‘I’d put up performances for my parents as a kid’
Talking about how she fell in love with dancing, Sairah says, “My parents enrolled me in a ballet class when I was three years old, and I started enjoying it. I was very dramatic as a child and would put on performances for them. I was dancing to Sheila Ki Jawani when I was two. I trained with Ashley Lobo, did professional certificate courses in different styles, and now I dance simply because I enjoy it.”
To this, Kabir adds, “We enrolled her in the class because she had already started dancing. She would dance to Katrina’s (Kaif) songs, which we would record and send to her.”
‘Documentary filmmakers are considered serious people, but they are the most interesting people I have met in my life’
Reminiscing about his journey from dancer to documentary filmmaker to finally directing large-scale commercial movies, Kabir shares, “Dancing is about team building, and was something I really enjoyed. I’m still in touch with many people from the West Side Story production. Gauri and I became friends during that project. Documentary filmmaking is what I studied – I did my master’s in filmmaking. At some point, I felt those films lacked a wide audience, and I felt frustrated. That’s when I wrote Kabul Express, based on my journey with a friend in Afghanistan. I landed a three-film contract with YRF, and the rest is history.”
Does the tag of a documentary filmmaker paint him as a serious person? “Documentary filmmakers are considered serious people, but they are the most interesting people I’ve met in my life,” says Kabir, adding, “They have varied experiences because of their travels. Just last year, I caught up with many documentary filmmakers at a festival in Kathmandu, and the interactions, as always, were quite interesting.”
I love being in front of the camera, but maybe not as an actor: Sairah
Sairah is often asked if she would take up after her parents. But she has other plans. “I’m hoping to study at New York University first,” she says, and continues, “Both my parents’ movie sets have always been a playground for my brother and me. My brother Vivaan has taken to filmmaking. While I love being in front of the camera with the spotlight on me, maybe not as an actor. But let’s see.”

Parvin Dabas, who was in the ICU after he met with a car accident in Bandra on September 21, was discharged on September 25. In an exclusive conversation with Bombay Times, Parvin, who is recuperating at his home, recalled the incident that has shaken him up.
He shared, “I was found lying unconscious by two boys. They made me sit on the sidewalk of the road. I remember hearing them talk about calling an ambulance and soon after, I was taken to a nearby hospital.”
The actor met with an accident on Hill Road when he was driving home from his office in Khar at 5 am.
“I was driving and at one point because of the high beam lights from the vehicle on the other side of the road, I couldn’t see the divider, and I crashed into it,” he said.
He further added, “We need to educate people more about driving with high beam on. There have been many occasions when while driving with my wife (Preeti Jhangiani), I have told her that such high beam can lead to accidents. That day, I was returning from work and wasn’t speeding, yet the accident happened.”
The past week has been stressful for Parvin and Preeti. He said, “Preeti has been a solid support. She has managed to deal with the situation well. Initially, we didn’t tell our sons about the accident, but they got to know from their friends. My older son got a message from his friend saying, ‘Sorry to hear about your dad.’ And he thought I had passed away. Then, Preeti told them about the accident and my condition and calmed him down. The incident has helped me appreciate my life and family more.”
Currently, the actor has been advised bed rest for 10 days. “I am taking pills for vertigo because I feel dizzy every time I get up. I am not walking around much and whenever I do, I am taking the help of a cane. I have been called for a follow-up after a few days,” says Parvin.
Parvin, the co-founder of the professional panja league in India, says that though the upcoming season of the league has been delayed a bit due to his accident, they will still go ahead with the international arm-wrestling event in Mumbai next month.

THE TIMES OF INDIA (September 22, 2024)
Mumbai: Hindi film and TV actor-director Parvin Dabas, 50, suffered injuries in a road accident at Hill Road, Bandra, early Saturday morning. He was admitted to Holy Family Hospital nearby. Police said no FIR has been registered.
According to the police, Dabas was returning from a shoot around 5.30 am. He was driving a car and was its sole occupant. “He was temporarily blinded due to the headlights of an oncoming vehicle and rammed into the divider on Hill Road,” said an officer.
He was admitted to hospital thereafter, and his family was informed. His wife actress Preeti Jhangiani rushed to attend to him. The hospital declined comment.
Dabas has featured in ‘Monsoon Wedding’, ‘Khosla ka Ghosla’, ‘The Hero’ and ‘Maine Gandhi Ko Nahin Maara’ apart from the TV series ‘Bestsellers’.

Parvin Dabas met with a car accident while driving back from work in Bandra in the early hours of Saturday morning. Talking about his accident, his wife, actor-producer Preeti Jhangiani, said, “Parvin has been quite occupied for a few days and has been working late nights for the upcoming season of the Pro Panja League. On his way back, his car banged into a divider at around 5 am.
Due to this, he injured his back and has a very bad concussion. He was feeling nauseous, dizzy and his vision was not clear. His legs were shaky, too. His condition has not improved. We have done all the scans, MRIs, CT Scan X-rays, and we will have more clarity soon, especially why his vision is not yet clear.”
Parvin, who has acted in films like Monsoon Wedding, My Name Is Khan and Ragini MMS 2, was last seen in Sharmajee Ki Beti this year.
Speaking about how he was rushed to the hospital, Preeti added, “Thankfully, two boys saw the car and dragged him out of the car and made him sit on the sidewalk for some time. With the help of two other people, they rushed him to the Holy Family Hospital in Bandra. They left while we were in the ICU. I didn’t get a chance to thank them. I request them to connect with me so I can thank them. Parvin is a stickler for rules. All his reports were clear, and he was wearing his seatbelt. He will continue to stay in the ICU for a couple of days at the hospital. He is currently unable to move. We are also thinking about the possibility of pushing the dates of the league as Parvin is the director, and a ship can’t sail without its captain.”

Two days after Parvin Dabas met with an accident and was hospitalized, his wife Preeti Jhangiani speaks out for the first time about what happened
Navya Kharbanda (HINDUSTAN TIMES; September 23, 2024)
Actor Preeti Jhangiani, wife of actor-director Parvin Dabas, who is in the ICU with grievous injuries, following a car accident in the early hours of Saturday in Mumbai, has spoken out for the first time since the unfortunate incident.
“It’s a shock, we’re still coping with it emotionally. He is usually very active and doesn’t stop talking about work even for a minute. To see him lying down and not his active self, is disturbing for the family,” she shares.
Calling it a “case of bad luck”, she tells us how the accident occurred: “He was driving early morning after working all night. A flash of headlights caused him to crash the car into the divider. Luckily, he was close to the hospital and two boys brought him in.”
The 44-year-old, who has been by her husband’s side at the hospital, says he is suffering from a concussion. “He has dizziness, double vision, drowsiness and nausea — signs of a concussion. He hasn’t been able to speak too much. Thankfully, his medical reports — MRI and CT scan — were clear. He will stay in the hospital for another week and will be out of ICU soon. We will do another CT scan in three days.”
Jhangiani says that they’ve done a toxicology test. “He wasn’t drinking and driving. It has been ruled out in the police report,” she ends.
Suniel Shetty buys minority stake in Panja League

Actor and entrepreneur Suniel Shetty has picked up a minority stake in Pro Panja League, a professional arm-wrestling tournament launched by celebrity couple Parvin Dabas and Preeti Jhangiani through their company Panja Sports.
"I am on board with Pro Panja League as an equity partner at the group level," Shetty told ET. “My shareholding will be in the single digits.”
Pro Panja League was founded in 2020. The inaugural season of the tournament, featuring six teams, kicked off on July 28 at the IGI Stadium in New Delhi. The tournament is being telecast on Sony Sports channels, while Dream Sports-owned FanCode is live-streaming it.
Shetty, who has invested in multiple startups, said arm wrestling has massive potential in India since it’s an indigenous grassroots sport with a very low entry barrier and is TV-friendly.
"Arm wrestling is truly an Indian sport in which both men and women can participate," Shetty said. “The infrastructure required for the sport is very minimal. It is also a TV-friendly sport. It will generate a lot of excitement because the results are guaranteed.”
Dabas said Shetty's association with Pro Panja League will be a draw for the public. "We are marrying sports and entertainment with the Pro Panja League," he said.
According to Dabas, Panja Sports will invest Rs 20 crore in the league in the first two years.
The first year will be more about capturing viewers' attention than generating revenue, he said. "We want to establish the league in the first year. Big-ticket sponsors will come in once the league has enough eyeballs," Dabas said.
He also said that Pro Panja League franchise owners will break even in the third or fourth year, since the cash burn is very low. Each franchise owner will have to invest Rs 2.25-2.50 crores every year.
Dabas said the league had already built a strong online community. "We had 270 million views on our social media channels in the last 10 months," he said.
Panja Sports aims to organize standalone tournaments throughout the year to build the sport at the grassroots level.
When we saw Khosla Ka Ghosla for the first time, Anupam Kher was excited about my entry, which was unbelievable-Boman Irani

Impeccable script, talented cast, Khosla Ka Ghosla lives on; The comedy with its commentary on social issues and generation gap elevated its status to a cult classic

The film cuts across all age groups. It created awareness about loopholes while dealing with property-related matters. It doesn’t feel like 15 years; I feel it was just yesterday that we were shooting for it. We made some wonderful friends. As it was a small-budget film, we shared the same vanity van and played many games.

Boman Irani
This film holds a special place in my heart. To play a Punjabi character was a leap of faith for me. Jaideep Sahni (writer) wanted to cast me, but I wasn’t keen on playing the role, as it was a daunting task. Today, I am grateful to him for having faith in me. Dibakar Banerjee (director) and Jaideep hand-held me through the dubbing process. Anupam Kher saab was a huge support. When we saw the film for the first time, he was excited about my entry, which was unbelievable. The film helped people cast me in roles outside my comfort zone without trepidation. It had a huge impact on my career.

Parvin Dabas
What struck me was the simplicity of the script. It was not your regular film. I remember meeting Dibakar Banerjee for the role, but he was cocky for a first-time director and wanted me to audition immediately. I told him, ‘Do you want a good audition or a quick audition?’ I came the next day and improvised on scenes and when I was done, he offered me the role. The film faced hurdles, but was a hit when it released.

Ranvir Shorey
I was starting out at that time and was auditioning a lot. It was a difficult decision for Dibakar to cast me, but he trusted me with the role. Playing the Punjabi, Delhi ka launda was familiar to me. I remember reading the script and thinking how perfect it was. The making was fun, with all credit to Anupam Kher, who led the cast in every way. He inspired and entertained us. I struck a great friendship with him. It was frustrating to wait for the release, especially as the film was important for my career.

BOMBAY TIMES (March 10, 2014)
In upcoming horror thriller Ragini MMS-2, Parvin Dabas plays a filmmaker called Rocks, based on a Bollywood filmmaker popular in the 1970s and 80s.
Says a source associated with the film, “Parvin’s character is based on a director known for being flamboyant and more talked about for his colourful off-screen personality, cocky attitude and flirting with the heroines.”
Rocks, who sports a bandana, visits the haunted house to shoot a movie being made on the life of Ragini, while Sunny Leone plays herself, an actress. Rocks is at a crucial stage in his career, where his film could be make or break him. That doesn’t stop him from getting over-friendly with his heroine Sunny.
