There have been these four films in the last 4-5 months which have basically looked like a family and cousins of each other and normally you would expect one member of the family to pass but that's not the rule in this side of the film industry as all the family members flopped and saw total rejection.
The similarities in these films were huge as all were female lead with ridiculously bad trailers which offered nothing and on top seemed to be pushing some social awareness message. But the problem becomes with this sort of Netflix cinema is that you don't have any reach to push whatever social awareness you want to show and on top the audience may not want to understand from you anyway as there are other better ways to learn than from cinema.
The fact these films came up in just a few months is a surprise which probably means that a part of the industry probably sees female driven films as the way forward. But its never about female or male driven films but about good films. The other side of the industry will believe its difficult to make good female driven films but that's not the case either as a MOTHER INDIA and HUM AAPKE HAI KOUN stand with the male testosterone driven SHOLAY and GADAR as historic blockbusters in Hindi cinema.
Recently there has been THE DIRTY PICTURE and TANU WEDS MANU series which not only scored at the box office but also post their release on satellite. The big difference between these films and the family which we have seen in the last few months is entertainment. If entertainment is there then the audience will not even look if its female driven or male driven. There has also been MARDAANI 2 which is a female film but that was simplistic with a protagonist v antagonist theme which will reach a wider audience therefore getting some numbers.
The final domestic, overseas and worldwide results of this family which flopped together is as follows. The numbers tell the story of the rejection be it domestic or overseas.
Saand Ki Aankh

STREET DANCER collected poorly in its second weekend with 7.25 crore nett which takes it to 61 crore nett in ten days. The drop is around 80% from the first weekend. The film is probably looking at a 10 crore nett apprx second week total and due to low occupancy, its going to be limited screenings in week three. The film will finish in the 65-70 crore nett range and the performance is very similar to STUDENT OF THE YEAR 2 released last May.
The collections of STREET DANCER till date are as follows.
Friday - 9,50,00,000 apprx
Saturday - 12,50,00,000 apprx
Sunday - 17,00,00,000 apprx
Monday - 4,25,00,000 apprx
Tuesday - 3,50,00,000 apprx
Wednesday - 3,00,00,000 apprx
Thursday - 2,75,00,000 apprx
Week One - 52,50,00,000 apprx
Friday - 1,50,00,000 apprx
Saturday - 2,50,00,000 apprx
Sunday - 3,25,00,000 apprx
Second Weekend - 7,25,00,000 apprx
TOTAL - 61,25,00,000 apprx
PANGA was very poor in its second weekend with collections of under 4 crore nett. The film has just about hit the 20 crore nett mark after ten days and its looking a big struggle to hit the 25 crore nett mark. A film like JUDGEMENTALL HAI KYA did business of almost 34 crore nett despite being a non performer so that puts the business of this film into perspective.
The collections of PANGA till date are as follows..
Friday - 2,00,00,000
Saturday - 4,25,00,000
Sunday - 5,50,00,000 apprx
Monday - 1,25,00,000 apprx
Tuesday - 1,20,00,000 apprx
Wednesday - 1,20,00,000 apprx

Friday - 75,00,000 apprx
Saturday - 1,35,00,000 apprx
Sunday - 1,75,00,000 apprx

STREET DANCER fell around 45% from Thursday as it collected 1.50 crore nett to take its total to 54 crore nett. There was no major competition but the drop was coming as the film had not been liked. There should be growth over the weekend but it does not matter that much as its fate is sealed now.
The collections of STREET DANCER till date are as follows.
Friday - 9,50,00,000 apprx
Saturday - 12,50,00,000 apprx
Sunday - 17,00,00,000 apprx
Monday - 4,25,00,000 apprx
Tuesday - 3,50,00,000 apprx
Wednesday - 3,00,00,000 apprx
Thursday - 2,75,00,000 apprx
Week One - 52,50,00,000 apprx
Friday - 1,50,00,000 apprx
TOTAL - 54,00,00,000 apprx
PANGA collected a poor 75 lakhs nett on its second Friday which is a drop of 30% plus and this type of film at collections at these levels should be much better. The film will not even reach 25 crore nett. Both STREET DANCER and PANGA are flop films theatrically with the difference being that STREET DANCER will cover costs with all rights while PANGA will be down 10 crore with all rights even though the costs of PANGA are half of STREET DANCER.
The collections of PANGA till date are as follows.
Friday - 2,00,00,000
Saturday - 4,25,00,000
Sunday - 5,50,00,000 apprx
Monday - 1,25,00,000 apprx

PANGA had a dull first week as it collected 16.50 crore nett in week one and this figure is 10 crore less than CHHAPAAK which itself had a poor number. The film was struggling from the start though got huge growth on day two as there was help from the media coupled with a very low first day which enabled the growth. But eventually the public word of mouth would come out and that is what happened on Sunday as it could not really consolidate the growth.
There was a chance of respectability if the film could have improved its Friday collections on Monday by around 20-25% but it fell around 40% which meant lights out. The weekdays continued to drop by small amounts and now the task is probably to get over the 25 crore nett mark as even a 30 crore nett total looks impossible even with the weak competition. Now that is really asking for trouble as you don't have an audience anyway and you think the wider audience is mad to watch your poor cinema over the bigger films.
The collections of PANGA till date are as follows.
Friday - 2,00,00,000
Saturday - 4,25,00,000
Sunday - 5,50,00,000 apprx
Monday - 1,25,00,000 apprx

Chhapaak and Panga incur loses despite being 'small films'

CHHAPAAK and PANGA which were released over the last few weeks have turned out big losers. It is said that its difficult to lose in small films in the business nowadays as there are digital rights as well as satellite and music which can form most of the recovery but slowly more and more films are becoming losers.
The reason for the big losses of these two films is that they looked small but the costs are not exactly small in the context of what the films look for the audience. Both films have cost around the 50 crore mark to produce and release. Normally these films would not go past 35 crore but those films have leading ladies who are probably lower down in the pecking order.
Both films looked bad from the trailers and met with a poor fate but still the expectations would be to get to 45-50 crore nett and be safe. Coincidentaly both the films were produced by the same studio which did very well last year with films like TOTAL DHAMAAL, CHHICHHORE and HOUSEFULL 4 but these were acquisitions.
CHHAPAAK had a production budget of 38 crore and 12 crore P&A and had a recovery of 26 crore from satellite, digital and music so needed another 24 crore but will do just 19 crore. This is a 5 crore loss but due to the total rejection of the film the revenue for satellite and digital is sure not to come in as its been put on the books. so the loss is pretty sure to be much more.
PANGA was made at a cost of 39 crore and 10 crore P&A and had a 25 crore recovery from satellite, digital and music and also needed 24 crore to cover but will hardly do 14 crore from theaters giving it a lost of 10 crore. Again that does not take into account the losses that will have to be suffered on the account of non theatrical revenues as rejected by the public.
These type films only have a theatrical audience at multiplexes and even the ones that do well at these multiplexes suffer post release and are unable to find an audience and CHHAPAAK and PANGA will have no audience in any format as they missed the boat in the theatres.

PANGA continued to fair badly as it collected 1.20 crore nett which is pretty much in the range of Monday but the film is going nowhere. The five day total of the film is a little above 14 crore nett and the week is going to be in the 16.50 crore nett range.
It should be able to cross 20 crore nett and possibly 25 crore nett as there are no major releases this week but the 30 crore nett mark looks like a dream for the film. The film seems to heading for similar business to SAAND KI AANKH which is in a similar zone but had far lower costs than PANGA. SAAND KI AANKH, CHHAPAAK and PANGA are three films, as bad as each other, which hardly have an audience even if they were good yet all three clashed with big films. Now that is really asking for trouble as you don't have an audience anyway and you think the wider audience is mad to watch your poor cinema over the bigger films.
The film could hold well over the weekdays at low levels but with hardly anything on the board, its going to be a struggle to go anywhere.
The collections of PANGA till date are as follows..
Friday - 2,00,00,000
Saturday - 4,25,00,000

PANGA fell badly on Monday as it collected just 1.25 crore nett to take its total to 13 crore nett which means its lights out unless these is a miracle coming. The drop is around 40% on Monday but that is far too much for a film which hardly collected on day one. The collections of the film should have been at worst same as Friday and preferably more than Friday.
The first week is looking to be around that 16-17 crore nett mark and basically the film has no chance of even doing the business of CHHAPAAK. The film has lower costs than CHHAPAAK by around 10 crore but will be one of those losers even if we include all those. It will mean that November, December and January has seen four losers in PAGALPANTI, PANIPAT, CHHAPAAK and PANGA while in the Jan-Nov 2019 period its difficult to recall a major release which actually lost money when all rights come into play. SONCHIRIYA, WHY CHEAT INDIA and INDIA'S MOST WANTED come to mind but these films are not at the level of the above four and are smaller with lesser awareness.
The film could hold well over the weekdays at low levels but with hardly anything on the board its going to be a struggle to go anywhere.
The collections of PANGA till date are as follows.
Friday - 2,00,00,000
Saturday - 4,25,00,000

PANGA had a low weekend of 11.25 crore though the trend especially on Saturday was good. It picked up well on Saturday but its coming off a low level which leaves the overall numbers at poor levels. The film could have released on another date and it was a mistake for the makers to come and clash with a bigger film. A one week push would have meant a clash with JAWAANI JAANEMAN which PANGA could have beaten in a clash.
The Saturday jump means that there is an audience which have liked the film. No doubt its a limited audience but releasing it when the competition is lesser would have given this film much better run. Clashes are fine and films can survive with clashes but they have to be of equals or close to equals. Its weird that you have these small films taking on the bigger films like PANGA against STREET DANCER, CHHAPAAK against TANHAJI: THE UNSUNG WARRIOR and SAAND KI AANKH against HOUSEFULL 4. These smaller films hardly have an audience and on a good day and for a film liked by the target audience, you might get 50 lakh footfalls. But by clashing, you are reducing even those mininmal footfalls. If it can do that then it will be in with a chance of success despite these low opening weekend collections.
The film could hold well over the weekdays at low levels but with hardly anything on the board its going to be a struggle to go anywhere.
The collections of PANGA till date are as follows..
Friday - 2,00,00,000

PANGA showed huge growth of 110% on Saturday as it collected 4.25 crore nett but the first day total was very low and so the collections of the film remain very low. The second day collection of the film is lower than the first day of a film like CHHAPAAK which pretty much tells the standing of the film at the moment.
The growth was huge at the bigger multiplexes with some sites doing three times the business of day one and here is where the film has some chances. Its not going to work outside the big metros and it depends where the film can land on the Monday. The film had to at least double on Saturday which it has done and now its a must to be higher on Monday than Friday and that is just to have a chance. If it can do that, then it will be in with a chance of success despite these low opening weekend collections. The film has collected 6.25 crore nett in two days.
The collections of PANGA till date are as follows..
Friday - 2,00,00,000
Saturday - 4,25,00,000
TOTAL - 6,25,00,000 apprx
Street Dancer collects 9.50 cr on Day 1; Panga collects 2 cr

STREET DANCER had average collections on day one of 9.50 crore nett and it should have done better as ABCD 2 collected more a few year back. This film is a franchise of that film but another name had to be used due to IPR. So that takes a little shine of the film but that should have been compensated by the growth in business since 2015.
The film has not fared too well at the bigger multiplexes but is decent in some mass pockets. The better collections are in Mumbai and South but they should have been better here due to it being a dance film. Also, these markets are traditionally better for dance films even if we go back to 1982 when DISCO DANCER released. Mumbai and South contribution is well over 50% of the business.
North India has not done well but that was sort of expected though ABCD 2 did manage some decent collections while ABCD 1 was a dud in North. In fact, ABCD 2 is probably the only dance film in history to get some decent numbers in North. It remains to be seen what sort of growth the film can get on Saturday and considering the bigger multiplexes are low, they have potential to grow a lot but the content may not be for these big multiplexes. Sunday should be good as its Republic Day and it should get a boost but even that will probably mean an average weekend and then the fate hanging on the weekdays.
PANGA has done poor business of around 2 crore nett as it got sandwiched between STREET DANCER and TANHAJI: THE UNSUING WARRIOR. The film got a release of around 1500 screens but that is not really important when its unlikely to find an audience with a strong holdover and a more audience friendly newer release for competition. The film will need to at least double its collections on Saturday but even then, a 4 crore nett total is what the film should be doing on day one.
