India's Got Latent Season 2 nahin aane dena chahiye-Mukesh Khanna

India’s Got Latent Season 2 nahin aane dena chahiye: Mukesh Khanna

Mahima Pandey (HINDUSTAN TIMES; April 14, 2026)

The war of words between actor Mukesh Khanna and stand-up comedian Samay Raina is escalating by the day. In the latest turn of events, Mukesh who used to essay the popular superhero Shaktimaan, has expressed his displeasure with Samay’s comments where the comic said the TV show motivated children to jump off rooftops.

Mukesh, in response, called Samay’s content “ashleel” or vulgar.

But first, here’s how it started. In 2025, Samay’s controversial YouTube talent show India's Got Latent attracted controversy for its content which people called offensive and obscene. Mukesh had called it “filth” and claimed it was negatively impacting the youth.

Recently, on his comedy special Still Alive, Samay took a jibe saying it was in fact Mukesh’s Shaktimaan that hurt children: “Tune bachche maare hain, tu kya moral high ground lekar baitha hai?”

Mukesh, 67, tells us, “Ye aadmi khud ko itna bada samajh raha hai ki Shaktimaan ko critisise kar raha hai! Jab poora desh Shaktimaan ke saath hai, agar Samay saath nahin hai toh koi fark nahin padta mujhe.” He also said that India’s Got Latent should not return for season 2: “Ye show nahin aane dena chahiye. Khule aam gaaliyan de rahe hain. I have a complaint against listeners who laugh at such words, and platforms who allow such content.”

We reached out to Samay, but received no comment till the time of going to press.

Kaun Samay, kya Samay? Ranveer takes indirect dig
During his special Still Alive, Samay also made several comments about YouTuber Ranveer Allahbadia, whose joke became one of the most controversial highlights of India’s Got Latent. Samay even claimed that Ranveer “ruined his mental health”. Ranveer has now indirectly taken a dig at Samay, during a recent interaction with a paparazzo. He said, “Hum dono ka samay chal raha hai.” When the paparazzo brought up Samay Raina’s name, Ranveer replied, “Samay… kaun Samay? Kya Samay? Humara time. It’s our time, my time is now.”

Sonakshi Sinha slams Mukesh Khanna’s ‘distasteful’ remark on her upbringing

Sonakshi Sinha slams Mukesh Khanna’s ‘distasteful’ remark on her upbringing

HINDUSTAN TIMES (December 18, 2024)

Actor Sonakshi Sinha took to Instagram Stories (see right) on Monday evening, criticising actor Mukesh Khanna for saying that it was her father, actor-politician Shatrughan Sinha’s fault that she couldn’t answer a question on Ramayana on a television quiz show.

In 2019, Sonakshi participated in Kaun Banega Crorepati and was asked for whom Lord Hanuman brought the Sanjeevani booti, but she couldn’t answer correctly. In a recent interview on Siddharth Kannan’s YouTube channel, Mukesh blamed Shatrughan for not teaching Sonakshi about Ramayana. “Her brothers’ names are Luv and Kush. People were angry that Sonakshi didn’t know this, but I would say it’s not her fault—it’s her father’s fault. Why didn’t they teach their children this? Why did they become so modern?”

Reacting to the remarks, Sonakshi asked Mukesh to “stop bringing up the same incident time and again to be back in the news at the expense of me and my family”.

She further warned him against speaking about values her “father has instilled” in her: “It’s because of those values that I have only said what I said, very respectfully, after you decided to make some distasteful statements about my upbringing.”

This is not the first time Mukesh has criticised Sonakshi. In 2020, Shatrughan defended his daughter, saying, “Who has appointed him the guardian of the Hindu religion?” He told Bollywood Hungama, “Not answering a question on the Ramayana doesn’t disqualify Sonakshi from being a good Hindu. She doesn’t need a certificate of approval from anyone.”

His nude photoshoot started my aversion, says Mukesh Khanna on why Ranveer will not play Shaktimaan

His nude photoshoot started my aversion: Mukesh on why Ranveer will not play Shaktimaan

HINDUSTAN TIMES (October 2, 2024)

Actor Mukesh Khanna has finally refuted reports suggesting that actor Ranveer Singh was being considered for the role of Shaktimaan in the upcoming film adaptation of the iconic TV show. The veteran actor had previously refused to confirm reports of Singh playing the role. In an interview with Bollywood Thikana, Khanna said that Singh’s nude photoshoot in a magazine was one of the factors that made him averse to casting him.

When asked why he found the actor unsuitable to play Shaktimaan, Khanna said, “I don’t take names as I am not supposed to criticize any actor. People get offended. But now, everyone knows that Ranveer came to convince me. I had called him a terrific actor and also praised his energy. People started posting pictures on social media as if Ranveer had been finalized to play Shaktimaan. Since I hadn’t taken a call on it as I have a contract with the production house, I posted a video where I said, ‘I have not said anything about the lead actor so please wait for some time’.”

He added, “That poor guy (Singh) was sitting in front of me for three hours. But it doesn’t reflect on his face, what it needs to play Shaktimaan. He looks fickle, as if he will con somebody. But he is a terrific actor. When I praised him, I mentioned that nobody in the film industry has an energy like him. But, I haven’t approved him for the role. He must have felt bad (on hearing that). However, it is the producer who casts the actor, not the other way round. That photoshoot (a nude shoot with Dirty magazine) was a very big reason that started my aversion towards him. When I saw that photoshoot, I said, ‘Kya kar raha hai yaar’.”

Mukesh Khanna takes down video criticizing Ranveer Singh's casting as Shaktimaan

Mukesh Khanna takes down video criticising Ranveer Singh's casting as 'Shaktimaan'

MID-DAY (March 19, 2024)

Veteran actor Mukesh Khanna, best known for his iconic portrayal of the superhero Shaktimaan, recently posted on his social media about rumoured Shaktimaan project casting that is doing the rounds with Bollywood star Ranveer Singh.

The video was first uploaded on YouTube and then posted on his Instagram. Both have now been taken down by Khanna. The video which has now been deleted had remarks about the upcoming Shaktimaan movie. The reports have long been making rounds on the casting for the reported superhero film however, no confirmation has come. Reacting to the reports, Khanna made a video and shared on his social media, which didn’t make Singh’s fans happy.

Back in 2022, Sony Pictures India announced it would back the film adaptation of Mukesh Khanna-starrer TV show 'Shaktimaan'. "After the super success of our many superhero films in India and all over the globe, it's time for our desi Superhero," a tweet read on the official X page. The announcement was made via video, teasing Gangadhar's iconic specs, his camera, and finally the big reveal: the costume of Shaktimaan. According to the makers, the film will be headlined by "one of India's superstars". Reportedly, the film will be helmed by Basil Joseph of 'Minnal Murali' fame.

What Mukesh Khanna said:
Mukesh took to Instagram and wrote in Hindi, “For several months, social media has been filled with rumours of Ranveer playing Shaktimaan, which has upset everyone. I have been quiet, but ever since channels have begun declaring that he has been signed, I have to break the silence. I have said that a person with this image, no matter how big of a star, cannot be Shaktimaan.”

He also shared a video on YouTube and said that Ranveer should take up films in other countries where he can do nude scenes. “I have told the producers, that your competition is not with Spider-Man, Batman, Captain Planet. Shaktimaan is not just a superhero, he has also become a super teacher. Now, the actor who takes on the role should have the quality that when he speaks, people will listen. There are big actors, but their image comes in the middle,” said Khanna.

It will be a challenge to find a new Shaktimaan-Mukesh Khanna

It will be a challenge to find a new Shaktimaan, says Mukesh Khanna

Tanvi Trivedi (BOMBAY TIMES; March 3, 2024)

There are reports that the iconic TV show Shaktimaan is likely to be remade into a film and Ranveer Singh will play the title role. Mukesh Khanna played the part on the small screen for many years and was also the producer of the show. He had sold the rights to an international production house two years ago.

When we spoke to him about the film, he shares, “I can’t talk much about the collaboration. We were in talks before the pandemic and signed the deal two years ago. Currently, we are working on the script.”

Ask the actor why he chose to sell the rights of the popular show and he says, “If I had to continue making it, it would have remained a TV show because I am not a film producer. So, when I got this offer from an international production house, which has made superhero films, I felt this was a great opportunity for Shaktimaan to go global.”

So, will Ranveer play the new Shaktimaan? “Many names have been suggested and I will be involved in the selection process. It will be a challenge to find a new Shaktimaan and retain the same connect with viewers. Whoever suits the role best will be finalized,” he replies.

Khanna confirms that he will also be seen in the film. “I don’t know much about my role, but I will be a part of the film. There are many people, who tell me even today that there can be no other Shaktimaan except Mukesh Khanna. But as time passes, one has to move on,” he says.

Adipurush makers to change controversial dialogues; even in the past, scenes have been re-shot or removed

ADIPURUSH:
EPIC STORM OF ANGER

Modifications post release aren’t common, but scenes have been re-shot or removed, and songs have been dropped, too, in the past
Niharika Lal (HINDUSTAN TIMES; June 20, 2023)

Adipurush dialogue writer Manoj Muntashir Shukla believes it’s a case of just five lines. “I wrote more than 4,000 lines as dialogues in Adipurush, some sentiments got hurt on five of those lines,” he wrote on social media.

The jury is still out on whether it’s five lines or more, but the fact remains that the dialogues of Adipurush have sparked caustic reactions from audiences, politicians and film critics alike ever since its release last weekend.

The film has been widely panned for showing divine characters – especially Hanuman – speak lines that the film’s makers call colloquial, but many film-watchers have found to be crass. Bowing to the pressure, the film’s team announced on Sunday that the dialogues would be altered, “valuing the input of the public and the audience”. The makers said that they are “revisiting the said dialogues, and the same will reflect in the theatres in the next few days.”

However, such moves of altering scenes and dialogues post a movie’s release are not unprecedented. Over the years, filmmakers from Guru Dutt and Bimal Roy to Sooraj Barjatya have sought post-release changes in dialogues and songs for various reasons.

ADIPURUSH DIALOGUES THAT HAVE DRAWN FLAK
“Jo hamari beheno ko haath lagayenge unki lanka laga denge”
“Teri bua ka bageecha hai kya jo hawa khane chala aaya?”
“Kapda tere baap ka, tel tere baap ka, aag bhi tere baap ki toh jalegi bhi tere baap ki”
“Aap apne kaal ke liye kaaleen bichha rahe hain”
“Mere ek sapole ne tumhare sheshnaag ko lamba kar diya, abhi toh pura pitara bhara para hai”

WE WILL REVISE SOME OF THE DIALOGUES: MANOJ MUNTASHIR
I wrote more than 4,000 lines as dialogues in Adipurush, some sentiments got hurt on five of those lines. In those hundreds of lines, where Shri Ram was glorified, Maa Sita’s chastity was described, I was hoping to receive praise for them, which I don’t know why I did not get. For me, there is nothing greater than your feelings. I can give countless arguments in favour of my dialogues, but this will not lessen your pain. I and the producer-director of the film have decided that we will revise some of the dialogues which are hurting you and they will be added to the film this week
– Manoj Muntashir Shukla, dialogue writer of Adipurush, on social media

WHY MAKERS CHANGE FILMS POST RELEASE
While there are no recent examples, films that saw post release changes include those that were banned in some states or where the makers have made fresh edits, voluntarily. For example, Prakash Jha agreed to some changes in his film Aarakshan on the eve of its release after Uttar Pradesh and Punjab banned it over controversial scenes and dialogues. Whenever a film makes any changes, it has to get the approval of the CBFC. Sometimes, these changes are also made for the film’s satellite or streaming rights.

NINE MINUTES OF DABANGG 3 (2019) WERE CUT
The makers of Dabangg 3 announced after the release of the film that they voluntarily removed certain scenes from the film’s title track, Hud Hud Dabangg. The film was trimmed by nine minutes. As per reports, about eight minutes were edited from the first half, which included a song, Awara, featuring Salman Khan and Saiee Manjrekar. Another song Naina Lade was also shortened. The film faced controversy when several groups objected to a sequence in the title song that featured saffron-clad sadhus dancing with guitars.

FILMMAKERS SOMETIMES VOLUNTARILY SEEK MODIFICATIONS AFTER CERTIFICATION: CBFC OFFICIAL
Elaborating on the topic, a CBFC official says, “It is not uncommon for filmmakers – especially in the case of well-known directors and big-budget films – to revise dialogues and scenes. Many filmmakers voluntarily seek modifications after certification. On an average, we receive eight to ten requests from filmmakers across languages. While the film retains the original certificate in the cinemas, any updated modifications are endorsed on back of the certificate.”

SONGS WERE CUT FROM HUM AAPKE HAI KOUN! (1994)
The initial reaction to Hum Aapke Hai Koun! after the industry screening was not very positive. The film, which has a running time of 3hr 26 mins, was even longer. In a recent documentary, the film’s maker, Sooraj Barjatya, said, “For Hum Aapke Hain Koun!, we had a screening and that show was a disaster. However, Adi (Aditya Chopra) told me, ‘Dhai gaane katoge toh nikal jayegi’. And honestly, it was on my mind for the last five months. He pinpointed the exact two-and-a-half songs, which I removed the next day (sic).”

GURU DUTT, BIMAL ROY ALSO CHANGED FILMS POST RELEASE
Film archivist and historian Shivendra Singh Dungarpur shares that it was quite common in the ’50s and ’70s for filmmakers like Guru Dutt and Bimal Roy to modify their films if they felt the audience was not connecting with the story. Dutt reportedly reshot scenes of Pyaasa after the release and also removed a song. When Dutt visited a cinema showing Sahib Biwi Aur Ghulam, he decided to reshoot the climax after seeing the disappointed audience but later changed his mind and didn’t change it. However, he did remove Meena Kumari’s song Sahil Ki Taraf and some dialogues. Similarly, Bimal Roy also changed some parts of Devdas post-release.

The controversy raises a larger question: How did a film that seemingly ridicules deities receive clearance from the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) without any objection?
Syeda Eba Fatima (HINDUSTAN TIMES; June 20, 2023)

The uproar surrounding Adipurush shows no signs of abating. From objectionable dialogue to problematic scenes and inappropriate character representations, audiences remain dissatisfied with the movie’s content. In a shocking turn of events, on Monday, the Kshatriya Karni Sena, during a press conference in Madhya Pradesh, gave death threats to writer Manoj Muntashir and director Om Raut. Amid outrage, Nepal banned all Hindi films in its capital Kathmandu and the tourist town of Pokhara.

INDUSTRY INSIDERS SPEAK

PAHLAJ NIHALANI
The producer and former chairman, CBFC, slams the censor board saying, “It’s filled with random officers, clearing movies without objections; chairman is not available to look after the operation. In the absence of a proper system, a film like this getting a certificate is obvious.”

KOMAL NAHTA
The trade expert calls it a “grave error” on the part of the writers, and he agrees that the censor also seems to have overlooked it. “Revising them now won’t change the fate of the film because there are more issues than just these few lines.”

TARAN ADARSH
The trade analyst says that while watching the film, he wondered how the censor could clear the movie considering the makers had made a clear mockery of religion. “However, CBFC comes into the picture much later. The onus is on the director and writer, and for me, they are to blame,” he adds.

APURVA ASRANI
The filmmaker says, “If you don’t like a film, don’t recommend it. If you don’t like its message, counter it with another story. But there are people keen to watch Adipurush. Also, if the makers are being threatened or pressured, we should stand by them in the name of free speech.”

ARUN GOVIL
The actor, who is famous for playing Lord Ram in TV show Ramayan, says, “Makers are revising the dialogue because they don’t want people to react further. Par jin logon ne film already dekh li hai, woh dobara dekhne toh jayenge nahin.”

DIPIKA CHIKHLIA TOPIWALA
“The damage is already done. How such a film was cleared by the censor board is surely something to think about,” says Chikhlia, who played Sita, in the same iconic TV show.

MUKESH KHANNA
“The problem is not only those five lines... What will you do about costumes, like Raavan made into Khilji or Hanuman made to look like a cartoon? Aur censor ko kya knowledge nahi hai hamare dharam ki?” questions Khanna, who shot to fame as Bhishma in the TV show, Mahabharat.

MAKERS ARE SAYING...
The makers of Adipurush, on Sunday, decided to change a few controversial dialogues (see box). Dialogue writer Manoj Muntashir said, “I can give countless arguments in favour of my dialogues, but this will not reduce [anyone’s] pain. I and the producer-director have decided that some of the dialogues which are hurting you, we’ll revise them. They’ll be added to the film this week.”

As the controversy continues to gain steam, Muntashir has sought protection from Mumbai Police. Meanwhile, in an interview with Zee News, he said that he trusted director Om Raut during the making of the film, and requested that any questions pertaining to the story and screenplay be directed to Raut.

“We have not shown the entire Ramayana; it is extracted from one corner of the epic, Yuddha Kand. The only questions that remain are about the dialogues. The producers and I have announced that those dialogues would be changed.”

Mukesh Khanna on Besharam Rang: "How could the censor board pass it?"

Mukesh Khanna on Besharam Rang: How could the censor board pass it?
HINDUSTAN TIMES (December 18, 2022)

Mukesh Khanna has joined the group of people criticising the song Besharam Rang from Deepika Padukone and Shah Rukh Khan’s upcoming film Pathaan. He has questioned how the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) could pass the song despite alleged “vulgarity” in the visuals of the song.

The actor told ABP News, “I think our film industry has gone haywire. This is a matter of vulgarity, it has nothing to do with any kind of religious problem. The censor board is no Supreme Court. They tell me very prominent people but can they not see all these attacks on the Hindu religion?”

He added, “Our country is no Spain or Sweden or such a country that allows everything. You dared to bring people in such limited clothing, next you will bring them without the clothes! The job of the censor board is to ensure that films do not hurt anyone’s personal feelings and beliefs. The censor must not pass such films that instigate or lead the youth astray. This song can mess up with the minds of the youth, not mislead. This is not a song made for the OTT, but a film. How could the censor pass it? Did they not see the deliberate provocative dressing?”

Adipurush in trouble over poor VFX and for hurting sentiments

Adipurush in trouble over poor VFX and hurting sentiments
HINDUSTAN TIMES (October 6, 2022)

It seems like the journey of Om Raut’s Adipurush, featuring Prabhas, Kriti Sanon and Saif Ali Khan, has not started on a positive note. The period drama is being called out for its heavy use of CGI and VFX, which is apparently giving the movie an unrealistic look. Based on the epic Ramayana, the film stars Prabhas as Lord Ram, Khan as Ravana and Sanon as Sita. Recently, a teaser was released, and since then, it has been trending on social media for the overuse of visual effects.

As soon as it was questioned, NY VFXWaala, a studio founded by actor Ajay Devgn, released a statement, saying: “Leading VFX studio, NY VFXWaala, has clarified that they have not worked/are not working on the CG/special effects of Adipurush.”

A video of the film’s lead, Prabhas, visibly angry, has also surfaced online. He is seen asking Raut to come to his room, which has led to speculations that all is not well between them.

The movie is also running into troubled waters with people objecting over “misrepresentation” of the Ramayana. BJP leader and Madhya Pradesh home minister Narottam Mishra threatened to take legal action against the makers, alleging that it is an insult to the Hindu religion. “The costumes and looks of Hindu deities as seen in the teaser are not acceptable,” Mishra told mediapersons.

Actor-politician Malavika Avinash also slammed makers for “misrepresentation” of the Ramayana. “The Ravana in the photograph that I see floating around is a guy who looks nothing Indian, who has blue eye makeup and is wearing a leather jacket,” she told ANI.

Actor Mukesh Khanna, who played Bhishma in BR Chopra’s TV show Mahabharat, said, “You call the film Adipurush, you may tell me that it is the story of a man from the Stone Age. Why do you have the title of Ramayan then?”

Amid the growing negativity, Raut defended this film. “I was disheartened, for sure, not surprised because the film is made for a larger medium — the big screen,” he was quoted as saying by Indian Express.

For four years, Vaishnavi Macdonald wondered if Mukesh Khanna wore a wig in Shaktimaan

Farzana Patowari (BOMBAY TIMES; April 30, 2022)

Shaktimaan is one show which people remember even today. Actress Vaishnavi Macdonald, who played the role of Geeta Vishwas, recently posted a few throwback pictures of her look from the show on Instagram. She says, “Many people who saw Shaktimaan in their childhood still call me Geeta. They don’t know my real name. I think I have done other good work as well, but Geeta Vishwas overshadows everything.”

Going down memory lane, she narrates a funny incident from the past. “It was in the fourth year of our show and I was sitting with Mukesh Khanna ji on the set. I was looking at his hair and I thought when he used to be in his Gangadhar look, he would wear a wig and while playing Shaktimaan, he had his original hair. So the curious me asked his personal make-up dada about this. And guess what? He went and told Mukesh ji about it! Mukesh ji in a funny way asked me to pull his hair to check if they are real or not. He said, ‘After four years of working with me you didn’t know this?’ It was his real hair in both the characters.”

Before doing Shaktimaan, Vaishnavi did some Bollywood films, so it was challenging to adjust to TV initially. She recounts, “Mukesh Khanna was an established name in the industry and I was changing my medium from films to television. He would mouth big dialogues all at once and I was used to saying shorter dialogues with gaps. I would feel scared at times, but later it all became very normal. I learnt so much from him.”

We’re living in terrible times, I lost my two siblings and people also spread rumours about my death-Mukesh Khanna

Tanvi Trivedi (BOMBAY TIMES; May 15, 2021)

Mukesh Khanna lost two siblings to Coronavirus within a month. The actor’s elder sister Kamal Kapoor passed away in Delhi on April 12, and his elder brother Satish Khanna passed away due to a heart attack after recovering from COVID-19 in Mumbai last month. And a few days ago, rumours of the actor’s death also started spreading online. Khanna says, “There were rumours of my death and I spent two-three hours clearing that I am alive and fine.”

“My sister Kamal, who was married and based in Delhi, battled COVID for 12 days and recovered. However, she developed chest congestion and passed away. The doctors did their best but due to complications, I lost her. I am in a terrible state of mind. Within a month, I’ve lost my brother and sister. We all need to follow safety protocols. It is terrible to lose family members like this,” he shares.

Addressing rumours of his death, Khanna says, “I can’t believe that during these times, people can spread such rumours. I’m dealing with personal loss and people have spread rumours about my death. I had to take so many phone calls telling them how I am healthy by God’s grace.”

Not many respect women the way I do-Mukesh Khanna

HINDUSTAN TIMES (November 2, 2020)

On Saturday, actor Mukesh Khanna was at the receiving end of social media backlash for his purported statement in a video clip about how #MeToo (in India) started when women stepped out of homes to work. But now, the senior artiste, best known for his shows such as Shaktimaan and Mahabharat, has clarified his stance stating that the “whole thing has been blown out of proportion”.

“I am surprised that my statement has been perceived in an extremely wrong way, and is being looked at in a totally flawed context. The whole thing has been blown out of proportion. It’s being said that I am against women. But I can say with confidence that not many have as much respect for women as I do. I never said that women shouldn’t work,” he says.

There was no need for Gajendra Chauhan to belittle Mukesh Khanna or indulge in personal slander-Nitish Bharadwaj

Tanvi Trivedi (BOMBAY TIMES; October 10, 2020)

The Mahabharat special episode on The Kapil Sharma Show has triggered off a Mahabharat of its own among its cast. Recently, Nitish Bharadwaj, Gajendra Chauhan, Arjun, Gufi Paintal and Puneet Issar, who were a part of the mythological, came together for a special episode of the comedy show. Mukesh Khanna stirred up a hornet’s nest when he commented on the quality of Kapil’s show and why he chose to not be a part of the reunion on it. In turn, Gajendra said it was a case of sour grapes for Mukesh because he was not invited on the show. He also referred to him as a “flop actor”, who does not have a PhD in Mahabharat.

This has not gone down well with the rest of the Mahabharat team. Nitish Bharadwaj, who played Krishna, expressed his unhappiness over the turn of events in an exclusive chat with BT. He said, “Five of us, who comprise the top cast of the show, are extremely unhappy with what is going on between Mukesh Khanna and Gajendra Chauhan. Firstly, I feel that every person is entitled to his or her views. If Mukesh had a view on Kapil Sharma’s show, it is his view, and if anyone has the right to react, then it should be Kapil and his team. Why is Gajendra talking on Kapil’s behalf or defending his show?”

He further added, “It is Mukesh’s view or choice why he did not want to be a part of the show. There was no need to belittle him or deride him and indulge in personal slander. Mukesh’s role as Bhishma Pitamah has surpassed all his other roles, and he played it to perfection.”

The actor finds this war-of-words between his co-actors distasteful. He elaborated, “It is not in good taste to comment on anyone’s performance or career. We have all seen how Gajendra has performed in films, politics and also, as FTII chairman. By commenting on Mukesh and his knowledge and performance, he is only venting out his frustration. All these years, the actors of Mahabharat have never been embroiled in any controversy, and we should maintain that decorum. All of us may not agree with Mukesh’s views, too, but this kind of personal slander was not required.”

Nitish concludes with a word of advice, “We, as artistes, should only take positives of others and move on, rather than focus on negative points. I would say that Gajendra should imbibe the restraint of his on-screen character, Yudhishthir, in his real life, too.”

Today, Shaktimaan is even more relevant-Mukesh Khanna

Nikita Deb (HINDUSTAN TIMES; October 3, 2020)

India’s favourite superhero, Shaktimaan is still as popular as he used to be when it went off air in 2005. Even though Avengers and Marvel superheroes enjoy a large fan following today, Shaktimaan will still be close to every 90s kids’ heart. And therefore, actor Mukesh Khanna, who played Shaktimaan, says that he feels more than happy that the superhero story is now being adapted on the big screen. He says, “More than being happy about making a trilogy of Shaktimaan, mere sar se ek bojh hat gaya hai kyuki main four to five years se yeh karne ki soch raha tha. A lot of people say that I have made their childhood, so I can understand their keenness to see Shaktimaan be brought back.”

As the story has a mythological connect to Mahabharat, and is based on the universal thought of good winning over evil, Khanna believes that Shaktimaan is even more relevant in today’s time.

“This story is based on something that is thousands of years old. In every century or every decade, there is a war between the good and the evil. Today, there are much different problems in the society but the fight is same and that’s why, this will connect with people beyond their religion. It is the story of every household,” he says.

The actor has joined hands with a production house to make a trilogy based on the superhero-led show.

“I can’t reveal who I am working with but I am definitely not doing it alone. It is a Himalayan task. If I could make it alone, I would have done it already,” says Khanna, adding that this project has been long due. “Everyone keeps asking me when I am bringing back Shaktimaan because an entire generation has grown up with me. They have all become parents now. A lot of people have told me to just release a few more episodes or another season on my YouTube channel, but I am very clear that I do not want to bring it back for OTT platforms or online, this is meant for the big screen.”

Shaktimaan has to be bigger than Krrish, Ra.One-Mukesh Khanna

Mukesh Khanna in Shaktimaan
Mukesh Khanna ready to roll three-film franchise on India's original superhero from the '90s, Shaktimaan; said to be in talks with a top actor for the role
Mohar Basu (MID-DAY; October 1, 2020)

Years before we started rooting for the Avengers or exchanged notes on their superpowers with our friends, we used to be glued to our television screens, marvelling at the only superhero we knew — Shaktimaan. Almost 15 years since the Doordarshan show went off the air, actor-producer Mukesh Khanna and the original team are reuniting to create a three-film franchise. The first instalment of the trilogy is likely to go on floors in the second half of 2021.

"Kids across the country write to me, requesting that I create a new season of the series. I know the excitement around the subject hasn't dwindled. Shaktimaan is the first Indian superhero, after all. The makers of Krrish had Rs 150 crore [to make the film] and I didn't, which is why it took so long to develop the plan. Now, everything is slowly falling in place. The project should have rolled by now, but the pandemic disrupted our plans," says Khanna, who played a meek photojournalist and his superhero alter ego in the popular show that began airing in 1997.

The senior artiste is said to be in advanced talks with one of the top actors from the young crop to step into the role. "I can't reveal who we are considering to play the new Shaktimaan. The final announcement will happen when the deal is sealed. Shaktimaan has to be bigger than Krrish and Ra.One [2011]. It has to be an Indian franchise with international standards."

The show's creators, Khanna and Dinker Jani will serve as the creative producers and are currently in the process of finalising a director who will be able to do justice to their ambitious movie. "We will work with our old team, too. The story spans from the Mahabharata till today. Our Satya Guru [Shaktimaan's original avatar] is 5,000 years old. Shaktimaan is made with paanchbhoota [the five elements of cosmic creation]. We've started building the modern story on the concept where a young timid boy goes on to become [invincible]."

There was no intention to demean Sonakshi Sinha-Mukesh Khanna

The actor talks about the controversy over his recent comments about Sonakshi Sinha’s knowledge of Ramayan
Tanvi Trivedi (BOMBAY TIMES; April 14, 2020)

Senior actor Mukesh Khanna recently took a dig at Sonakshi Sinha, saying that the rerun of Ramanand Sagar’s Ramayan on TV would help young people like her, who lacked knowledge about the epic. The comment was triggered by an episode of Kaun Banega Crorepati last year, where Sonakshi didn’t know the answer to a question on Ramayan. Mukesh, who had played Bhishma Pitamah in BR Chopra’s 80s’ iconic TV show, Mahabharat, also lashed out at Ekta Kapoor for making a ‘modernised’ version of the epic on TV. BT questioned him about his controversial statements and here’s what he had to say. Read on...

After your comment on Sonakshi, her father Shatrughan Sinha, without naming you, questioned why is ‘someone’ trying to be the ‘guardian of Hindu religion’...
People have blown my comment out of proportion. I have known Shatruji for long and have immense respect for him. I took Sonakshi’s name as a mere example. It does not mean I was trying to demean her or question her knowledge. However, I am shocked to see how the current generation is not aware of many things. I am not claiming to be the guardian of Ramayan and Hindu literature, but as a citizen of India, I do feel that it is our duty to introduce our literature and history to today’s generation because they are more interested in TikTok and Harry Potter. Once again, if Shatruji feels that taking Sonakshi’s name was a mistake, then yes, it is. But, it was not intentional.

Nitish Bharadwaj has also lashed out at your comments, saying ‘Seniors seem worthy of respect, if they walk the path of empathy’ towards the younger generation. Your take?
Should I not say anything just because today’s generation will stop respecting me? I have never minced words and have always been honest about my thoughts, but Nitish Bharadwaj is diplomatic. He has also said that the current generation will never know about Ramayan and Mahabharat because our school textbooks don’t have any chapters on the epics. Well, there are no chapters on Harry Potter either, but the young generation knows about it. When we were growing up, our textbooks didn’t have chapters on the epics, but our parents introduced us to them.

Puneet Issar, too, has condemned your comments and feels that as you age, you should show some grace...
Puneet is just trying to promote his play, which glorifies Duryodhan. He feels that it is his interpretation of Mahabharat and Duryodhan’s character. He also feels that Ekta Kapoor’s Mahabharat was her interpretation of the epic. Well, Ekta’s Mahabharat looked like Greeks were playing Hindustanis. I do have the right to say that these versions are not based on the original, and they should watch the reruns of Ramanand Sagar’s Ramayan and B R Chopra’s Mahabharat.

Doordarshan emerges as the most-watched channel across genres

As Doordarshan bags top slot among the most-watched channels, we find out what’s attracting audiences to old, iconic shows
Prashant Singh (HINDUSTAN TIMES; April 13, 2020)

Back in the ’80s and ’90s, Doordarshan’s viewership would regularly go through the roof. And then, private GECs (general entertainment channels) took over. But now, history is repeating itself as DD — as per the data by Broadcast Audience Research Council-Nielsen — has emerged as the most-watched channel across genres, in the week of March 28 to April 3. In the week before that (March 21-27), DD National didn’t even feature in the top 10 most-viewed channels in Hindi GECs category.

During the ongoing national lockdown due to Coronavirus, DD has brought back many of its iconic shows such as Ramayan, Mahabharat and Shaktimaan. And the idea has worked. As per the data, DD National’s viewership went up to 580 million impressions in the 9 am-10.30 am slot [in the week of March 28 to April 3], compared to one million impressions in the previous week. Likewise, in the 9 pm-10.30 pm slot, the corresponding numbers stood at 835 million impressions, which was two million in the previous week.

TV industry insiders and experts feel DD shows “will always have a strong emotional connect and recall value.” “They will always remain classics. Also, these days, when people’s mood is gloomy, these shows bring positivity, and also make for a great family watch. Plus, they also stand out for their innate simplicity,” says TV director-producer Rajan Shahi. For trade analyst Taran Adarsh, it goes on to “prove the power of quality content”. “That’s why even if one may not have heard of the actors who worked in them, the shows still attract people,” he says.

According to TV producer Sumeet Mittal, people will “always have loads of nostalgia attached to DD shows”. “Also, there are no fresh episodes of the new shows. But it’s great that people are reconnecting to the classics,” he says.

Shaktimaan actor-producer, Mukesh Khanna puts things in perspective: “It’s a great move by DD to bring back the iconic shows, which were extremely rich in content and educative, too. Today’s kids need much more ‘maarg darshan’ than the kids of that time,” he says.

Lockdown effect: Now other channels bring back CID, Aahat, Ayushmann Khurrana's 2008 soap and a lot more

With episode banks running dry due to the lockdown, TV channels decide to revive yesteryear hits
Himesh Mankad (MUMBAI MIRROR; April 6, 2020)

On March 27, Information & Broadcasting Minister Prakash Javadekar announced that in light of the 21-day lockdown, enforced to flatten the Coronavirus spread curve, Ramanand Sagar’s magnum opus Ramayan would be brought back on DD National. Soon after, it emerged that the channel would be rereleasing other yesteryear hits from its oeuvre, including Mahabharat, Shrimaan Shrimati, Dekh Bhai Dekh, Chanakya, Circus, Byomkesh Bakshi and Shaktimaan.

On Thursday, Shashi Shekhar, CEO, Prasar Bharati—India’s public service broadcaster which runs Doordarshan and All India Radio—tweeted, “Thrilled to share that the re-telecast of Ramayan on @ddnational has garnered the highest ever rating for a Hindi GEC show since 2015.” Now, Mahabharat is poised to follow suit.

Meanwhile, with the lockdown having considerably depleted their episode banks, private channels, too, are forced to revisit their older shows. Colors has already brought back the recently-concluded season 13 of Salman Khan’s Bigg Boss, along with popular daily soaps like Dil Se Dil Tak and Belan Wali Bahu. Manisha Sharma, Chief Content Officer, Hindi Mass Entertainment, Viacom18, calls the channel’s old titles “seasoned shows”, adding, “We are facing an unprecedented situation. But we want to make sure that we keep providing wholesome entertainment to our audience, even in the time of social distancing.”

Kapil Sharma’s maiden solo stint on TV, Comedy Nights With Kapil, is also poised for a return with weekend special episodes on Colors. Interestingly, competitor Sony will be airing re-runs of the on-going season of The Kapil Sharma Show. CID, India’s longest-running TV show that went off air in October 2018 after 21 years, is back on Sony. Best of Crime Patrol and Superstar Singer are also returning to primetime. Horror fans will be particularly pleased to learn that the channel has reserved its cult show, Aahat, for midnight viewing. Sab TV, on the other-hand has placed its safe bet on Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah.

Mythology seems to be the flavour of the season. After Doordarshan, Star Plus is sprucing up with three of its own past mythologicals— Mahabharat, Siya Ke Ram and RadhaKrishn. Daily staples from the same channel—Saathiya, Diya Aur Baati Hum and Pratigya—are back as well, and sources confirm, are registering considerably higher ratings than during their original run. Star Bharat has decided to get back the two comic classics, Sarabhai vs Sarabhai and Instant Khichdi.

Meanwhile, Zee TV has come up with a unique strategy of bringing their web-shows to the small screen, which includes Sakshi Tanwar and Ram Kapoor’s Karrle Tu Bhi Mohabbat, Baarish featuring Sharman Joshi and the Ronit Roy-led Kehne Ko Humsafar Hain to combat vacant slots in the 9 pm-11 pm duration. “The cessation of shoots across daily primetime soaps lead us to evaluate alternatives in the absence of the core staple,” says Aparna Bhosle, Business Head, Zee TV, adding, “Given that we have access to a vast repository of content across multiple platforms, we decided to look within the network to arrive at this decision.” For the afternoon slots, the channel has revived Brahmarakshas, Pavitra Rishta, Choti Bahu, Kasamh Se, Jamai Raja, Jodha Akbar and Zindagi Ki Mehek.

Ayushmann Khurrana is also returning to the telly, through his 2008 show Ek Thi Rajkumari, which will soon start airing on &TV. The National Award-winning actor played the antagonist Prem in this love triangle. Incidentally, the channel is also bringing back the 56-episode, 2012 version of Ramayan, which had Gagan Malik as Ram, Neha Sargam as Sita and Sachin Tyagi as Ravan. “As the entire country fights the (Coronavirus) threat, there’s nothing better to bring families together than this fight between good and evil,” says Vishnu Shankar, Business Head, &TV.

Mukesh Khanna, who played Bhishma Pitamah in Mahabharat and India’s first superhero in Shaktimaan, says, “I’d never imagined that Ramayan and Mahabharat would air on the same day. It’s surreal. Back in the day, the government asked us not to air two epics in one day, as they were considered heavy shows for viewers. So, the premiere of Mahabharat was pushed by a year-and-a-half,” the veteran actor recounts.

He believes that the two mythological shows, along with his superhero outing, have given people a chance to revisit Indian culture. “After I heard about Ramayan and Mahabharat being brought back on TV, I spoke to the CEO of Prasar Bharati to air Shaktimaan, too. All it took was an e-mail,” he informs.

When asked if there are plans to take Shaktimaan’s story forward, the actor reveals that plans are afoot for season 2. “Shaktimaan was India’s first superhero, not RA.One or Krrish. I wanted to bring the character to the 70 MM format but couldn’t due to monetary issues. I have been working on Shaktimaan’s return for three years now, and there’s a concrete plan in place now,” he signs off enigmatically.

Old shows strike a new chord in this lockdown season

As the Ramayan re-run top TRPs and classic shows return to TV, we look at what’s making them audience favourites all over again
Prashant Singh (HINDUSTAN TIMES; April 5, 2020)

Back in the day, when TV shows such as Ramayan, Mahabharat or Shaktimaan had their original runs, they were the talk of the town. Now, history seems to be repeating itself. Many of these classic TV shows have hit the airwaves again and people are clearly lapping them up. For instance, the re-run of Ramayan on Doordarshan got the highest ever rating for a Hindi GEC show since 2015, when BARC started measuring TV audiences.

Not just Ramayan, thanks to the high demand, other shows such as Mahabharat, Shaktimaan, Circus, Byomkesh Bakshi, Shrimaan Shrimati, Buniyad, Dekh Bhai Dekh, Chanakya and Alif Laila too are back. So, what’s driving this demand? “Now, (due to Coronavirus lockdown) people have a lot of free time, which is also stress-free as far as regular work is concerned. Plus, there’s a nostalgia attached to these shows, as it reminds all of their carefree days,” says TV producer Shashi Mittal of Yeh Un Dinon Ki Baat Hai and Karn Sangini fame.

For trade analyst Taran Adarsh, old shows “will always be very entertaining and engrossing”. “Plus, they impart great teachings too. Now, thanks to these re-runs, our young generation can also watch them,” he says. Ad guru Prahlad Kakkar has a simple, straightforward reason: “Due to the Coronavirus lockdown, there is no new content or episodes. So, re-runs have to fill those slots. And today, viewers also don’t have many choices.”

For the shows’ actors/makers, the “relevance” of their work stands intact even now. “The content that came during the ’80s and ’90s is better than any saas-bahu serials… our show has always been educative. And that’s why Shaktimaan is relevant even today,” says its actor-producer Mukesh Khanna. Adds actor Rajit Kapur of Byomkesh Bakshi fame: “People who’ve watched the show 20 years ago are now showing it to their children. It’s pure, clean and wholesome entertainment. What appeals to people is that it’s simple to understand and, sometimes, simple is more effective.”

Shaktimaan Mukesh Khanna plans to include Coronavirus issues in reboot

Sonil Dedhia (HINDUSTAN TIMES; April 1, 2020)

Amid Coronavirus outbreak and 21-day lockdown in India, the government has decided to re-telecast the mythological serial of the ’80s — Ramayana and Mahabharat, on public demand. Joining the list of reruns on Doordarshan is another cult classic from the golden era of Indian television, superhero show Shaktimaan. Veteran actor Mukesh Khanna says that he appreciates this decision. He says, “It is a blessing in disguise. I am impressed with the government as the entire nation is going to watch it together. Since the time the government made this announcement, I have received many calls from fans, who are waiting to watch the show and also share it with their kids.”

Khanna, who also produced the show, essayed the dual roles of Shaktimaan and his geeky double Gangadhar, a photojournalist for Aaj Ki Aawaz newspaper. He adds that the show is significant event today. “The content that came during the ’80s and ’90s is better than any saas-bahu serials. Today’s generation is running behind getting good grades or a high paying job. Most of them are on their mobile phones or the internet. These kids need guidance, and our show has always been educative and informative. And that is why our show is relevant even today,” he says.

The actor says that they are soon coming up with the second season of the show which will tackle a few modern issues. “For the last three years, we have been working towards bringing out the second edition, which is contemporary but rooted in our values. We were working on the sequel because people wanted to know, aage kya hua (what happened next). From technology to even this virus, we will plan to include whatever we can. I feel whenever we return to work after this crisis, I will be in a better position to bring out the second part because the demand for it is higher than ever before,” he concludes.

Shaktimaan was a hit & will be a hit with children today-Mukesh Khanna

Mukesh Khanna, who played the superhero Shaktimaan in the eponymous show, feels that the show was high on values and he’s happy that people want a rerun
Rachana Dubey (BOMBAY TIMES; March 28, 2020)

Soon after the announcement yesterday that Ramayan will be retelecast, actor-producer Mukesh Khanna’s TV show, Shaktimaan, started trending on Twitter, with people requesting for its rerun as well.

Shaktimaan, a superhero show, was aired on Doordarshan from 1997 to 2005. Mukesh played the titular role and his alter ego, Pandit Gangadhar Vidyadhar Mayadhar Omkarnath Shastri, employed as a photographer in a newspaper called Aaj Ki Aawaz. As a show and a character, Shaktimaan found acceptance for its novel plot revolving around a common man, who attains superpowers through meditation and the five elements of nature. Every episode highlighted a socially relevant subject like the importance of hygiene, family values and morals rooted in Indian culture, and it also attacked social malpractices.

When we spoke to Mukesh yesterday, he said, “It makes me happy that people are demanding a rerun, I will be glad if the ministry considers it. Shaktimaan and a few other shows were high on values, their content was such that India watched them. This lockdown has made people understand each other better. I welcome the decision to have reruns, this is the best time for that.” Over a period of time, the show was accused of tempting children to perform dangerous stunts at home, and that was one of the reasons for it to be pulled off air. However, Mukesh said, “The plugs on my show were not pulled because of complaints, but the escalated broadcasting charges. Kids learnt a lot from Shaktimaan; we always warned them, clearly, to not repeat stunts from the show.”

Given that over the last decade, kids have been exposed to a wide variety of cartoons and shows from different countries, would they tune in to Shaktimaan now? “Yes, they will,” Mukesh said confidently, adding, “The shows of that era succeeded because of their content and not visual effects. Shaktimaan was a hit and will be a hit today, too. It has something for today’s children as well.”

‘SHAKTIMAAN REPRESENTS INDIA, WHICH FIGHTS CRISES WITH ALL ITS MIGHT’

Surendra Pal, who played the main antagonist in the show, said, “A rerun of popular shows will help us bring back our old values into play. Shaktimaan was more for children and their edutainment. My character was called Tamraj Kilvish, and he was as powerful as Shaktimaan. He wanted to spread andhkaar all over the world, create misery. Shaktimaan was working to stop him and destroy his powers. My character often said, ‘Andhera kaayam rahe’. It was a fight between the good and evil. Shaktimaan, to me, signifies India which continues to fight crises with all its might and problems like coronavirus are like Kilvish’s army, which will be destroyed, eventually.”
