VHP slaps legal notice on Laali Ki Shaadi Mein Laaddoo Deewana; T P Aggarwal refuse to bow down

Producer TP Aggarwal
Despite legal notice, producer adamant that he won’t edit out scene of pregnant woman doing the saat pheras
Mohar Basu (MID-DAY; April 6, 2017)

Makers of Laali Ki Shaadi Mein Laaddoo Deewana didn’t see it coming. Earlier this week, a right wing outfit had staged protests outside producer T P Aggarwal’s office over a scene that shows a pregnant Akshara Haasan taking ‘saat pheras’, but he refused to succumb to ‘pressure tactics’, as reported by mid-day. Now, the Vishwa Hindu Parishad has sent a legal notice to the production house, accusing them of attempting to maliciously outrage Hindu sentiments.

The film, starring Akshara, Vivaan Shah and Gurmeet Choudhary, is scheduled to hit theatres tomorrow. The matter will come up for hearing in court today. Reacting to the controversy, director Manish Harishankar tells mid-day, "There is no question of deleting the scene. It's a film about culture and traditions in changing times. The scene is integral to the story. I have asked our producers to hold a meeting with the VHP activists and reason this out. I don't want the matter to reach the court."

While an out of court settlement is a possibility, Aggarwal had been confident all along that nothing would stop the film's scheduled release. "I don't see why they are waking up just two days before the movie hits screens. Our promos have been on air for the past month," he argues. What is his plan of action, especially on such short notice?

"They have asked us arrange a screening for them. We aren't even considering the worst-case scenario — about Laali Ki Shaadi... being stalled. I have immense faith in the judiciary. What works in our favour is that it has already been cleared by the CBFC (Central Board of Film Certification). Pahlaj Nihalani (CBFC boss) follows the rulebook to the T. If there indeed was something immoral or objectionable about our film, the Board wouldn't have passed it without suggesting cuts," adds Aggarwal.

Fenil's Bollywood Talk # 459

2 YEAR OLD FILM TO EARN MORE THAN NEW RELEASES THIS WEEK!

With Sarkar 3 pushed ahead, April 7 became kind of a ‘vacant week’ with only small releases hitting the screens – Laali Ki Shaadi Mein Laaddoo Deewana, Mirza Juuliet and Mukti Bhawan. The makers of Baahubali hence made the right decision of making good use of this opportunity. The sequel releases on April 28 and they decided to re-release the first part, initially released in 2015, tomorrow.

The release is decent and pan-India. The Hindi version, when released in 2015, earned Rs 4.25 crore on Day 1 and it won’t be a surprise if a similar figure is achieved tomorrow. More than a decade ago, re-release of films was common and would do phenomenally well. The trend had died but it sees resurgence with Baahubali. If the re-release does well, Baahubali can hang around in theatres until perhaps the release of Baahubali 2 on April 28 and maybe even after that!

As anger subsides, ‘nationalist’ Bollywood brings back Pakistani artistes

The Uri Attack of September 2016 left a deep scar on India-Pakistan relationship and Bollywood paid a heavy price for it. Karan Johar’s Ae Dil Hai Mushkil, which was to release just 40 days later on October 28, 2016 was threatened with dire consequences by Raj Thackeray’s Maharashtra Navnirman Sena since it starred Pakistani actor Fawad Khan. The anger towards the artistes of the neighbouring country was so strong that it seemed that they’ll never be able to work together in Bollywood. T P Aggarwal, who heads the Indian Motion Picture Producers Association (IMPPA) passed a resolution banning Pakistani artistes and technicians across the film, television and theatre mediums in India until normalcy is reinstated between the restive neighbours. Aggarwal then decided to lead by example – he decided to replace the voice of Rahat Fateh Ali Khan from a song from his film Laali Ki Shaadi Mein Laaddoo Deewana. His grouse was that none of the Pakistani artistes condemned the ghastly attack and hence, he felt justified to boycott them.

It’s been 6 months since the ‘ban’ was passed. Laali Ki Shaadi Mein Laaddoo Deewana is about to release and shockingly, Rahat Fateh Ali Khan’s voice has been retained (check out the song in the YouTube video below)! According to a report, music composer Vipin Patwa managed to convince the makers. The same report carries a statement of T P Aggarwal in which he admits that he decided to replace Rahat saab’s voice because he wanted to ‘play safe’.

Replacing an actor after the film is shot is next to impossible. Hence, the entire demand to replace Fawad Khan from Ae Dil Hai Mushkil, Ali Zafar from Dear Zindagi and Mahira Khan from Raees was just not feasible since all these films were shot (except Raees) when the Uri Attack happened. But replacing a singer can be done anytime. One of the big examples of it was Arijit Singh’s voice replaced by Rahat Fateh Ali Khan himself for Jag Ghoomeya from Sultan. Therefore, it’s shocking that T P Aggarwal didn’t do so after boasting about the same in front of the media and the country. But his recent statement has made it clear – he was not being patriotic, he was being safe. He felt that the anger towards Pakistan is tremendous and it’s best to take safety precautions. Or else, he might get into trouble just like how Karan Johar did for Ae Dil Hai Mushkil. Obviously, he couldn’t admit that he’s taking the decision of replacing Rahat Fateh Ali Khan due to fear. So he gave his decision a nationalistic colour!

And that’s not all. Makers of Irrfan Khan’s May release Hindi Medium that stars Pakistani actor Saba Qamar shot for a promotional song, Hoor, sung by Pakistani singer Atif Aslam! The singer himself was present during the shoot and was seen posing with Saba and choreographer Ahmed Khan.

With time, the anger towards Pakistani artistes has subsided and hence, Bollywood is neatly taking small steps of bringing these talented people back into our movies. And this was bound to happen since the cultural bond between India and Pakistan is hard to break. The singers and actors from that country have done some great work that would be remembered for years. Also, as explained in this post, while Bollywood was pressurized to ban Pakistani artistes, the trade between the two countries went on without a single glitch. This shows that all the netas and self-confessed patriots who were spearheading the ‘Ban Pak artistes’ were doing it just for publicity and not for the love of the country.

The Pakistani artistes still aren’t allowed in India. Atif Aslam and Saba Qamar shot for the song in Georgia. Saba won’t even be present in India to promote Hindi Medium, just like Mahira wasn’t allowed to enter India to promote Raees. But that Bollywood has started taking Pak artistes back shows that slowly and gradually, we’ll soon have hopefully Fawad Khan, Ali Zafar and Mawra Hocane entertaining us in Bollywood films in future!

Akshara Haasan & I had a great launch pad, and the true test begins now-Vivaan Shah

Lakshmi V (BOMBAY TIMES; April 5, 2017)

When it comes to acting pedigree, it cannot get better than Akshara Haasan and Vivaan Shah - she is Kamal Haasan's daughter and he, Naseeruddin Shah's son. The two, who play the lead pair in the upcoming film, Laali Ki Shaadi Mein Laaddoo Deewana, have known each other since childhood and even dated each other briefly. No wonder then, that their comfort level has translated into crackling chemistry on screen. In a heartwarming conversation with BT, they open up about their lineage, tinsel town experiences and more, all over two cuppa of chai. Read on...

Akshara and Vivaan, you guys debuted with films helmed by R. Balki (Shamitabh) and Vishal Bhardwaj (7 Khoon Maaf), respectively. How has the journey been so far?
Akshara: I wanted to become a football player, but I injured my legs and was heartbroken that I couldn't pursue it seriously. However, I bounced back and worked as an assistant director for four years. I also assisted dad recently in his upcoming film. So, the journey has been incredible. I've kept my mind open and I'm thankful for the kind of appreciation and knowledge I've received. Now, I'm craving for more.
Vivaan: We both are fortunate to have worked with the kind of people we have. These guys are institutions in their own right. Now, it's our responsibility to make them proud. We've had a great launch pad, and the true test begins now.
Akshara: Even now, I text (R) Balki sir and ask him what he thinks of my work. I am sure Vivaan does the same with Vishal (Bhardwaj) sir.

Laali Ki Shaadi..., directed by Manish Hairshankar, is a quirky family entertainer. How was the atmosphere on the set?
Vivaan: It was crazy, just like the film. She is the most fun to work with. She keeps playing pranks on people.
Akshara: (In a serious tone) You are soon going to land me in a lot of trouble.
Vivaan: (Laughs) But you are a lot of fun to work with. For a debutante, her performance in Shamitabh was quite sophisticated. She is very expressive and communicates a lot with the smallest of gesture. While working on this film, we got to learn a lot from lot from Saurabhji (Shukla) and Sanjayji (Misra). We've become their disciples. Sanjay sir's sense of humour would leave us in splits.
Akshara: They would discuss how to make the scenes better and we both would be busy observing them. Everyone on the set was involved in the filmmaking process. We just watched in awe.

You guys must have been the youngest on the set...
Akshara: Yes, but we were treated like adults.
Vivaan: ...though we behaved like babies.
Akshara: We used to sit together and figure out how to perform our scenes better. Thanks to him, my Hindi is much better. Since he has a theatre background, he had a different perspective towards acting as well.
Vivaan: What I like the most about her is that she is always game for rehearsing. Sometimes, people don't want to do it, but she is a team player.

Apart from rehearsals, is there anything else you guys bonded on? Laddoo, for instance?
Akshara: (Laughs) Nope, we are health conscious.
Vivaan: But while shooting in Gujarat, dhoklon ki barsaat hui!

Akshara, you are a good dancer. Did you teach Vivaan a step or two?
Vivaan: I'm also a dancer. I'm a crazy dancer.
Akshara: He enjoys dancing and that's the beauty of it.
Vivaan: I think dance is the purest form of expression. When I auditioned for Happy New Year, Farah ma'am (director Farah Khan) asked me if I could dance. And I lied, saying that I was damn good at it. To my surprise, she held her head and rued, 'But I wanted a bad dancer.' Then I started shouting, 'Oh, that's me'.

The two of you have a lineage to be proud of. In fact, your fathers have worked together in Hey Ram (2000). Did they drop in on the set?
Akshara: Only my mother (Sarika) visited me because my birthday fell on the third day of the shoot. Otherwise, they respect our space.
Vivaan: I think her birthday celebration broke the ice for us.

Do you have any memories from the set?
Akshara: Some of the best memories I have, some of the most precious bonds I've developed - both professionally and personally - have been on this set.
Vivaan: I remember shooting for a song in Kashmir. Like all heroines of the past, Akshara was dancing in a chiffon sari while the temperature was freezing.
Akshara: This is not coming out of any place of disrespect, but I used to make fun of such sequences. I used to laugh when I saw actors dancing around trees. Back then, I never thought I'd be doing it one day.
Vivaan: But she did it with out flinching (laughs).
Akshara: Yes, with Vivaan and Gurmeet Choudhary backing me, it was quite fun.

No sex for Gurmeet Choudhary; not on screen at least

Subhash K Jha (DNA; April 5, 2017)

Gurmeet Choudhary, who famously played Lord Rama on the small screen, was seen in two back-to-back erotic thrillers. “I am so done with them,” he sighs.

He adds, “Not that I disown those films. For an outsider like me — I am from Bihar — getting into Bollywood was an ordeal. Making a name for myself on television was easier than finding a place in Bollywood. So when Bhatt Saab (Mukesh Bhatt) offered me Khamoshiyan and T-Series offered Wajah Tum Ho, I took them up without a second thought.”

However, Gurmeet’s fans reacted negatively to his erotic overtures. “I received a lot of flak for doing what I did. And so, my next release Laali Ki Shaadi Mein Laaddoo Deewana, will be a sweet and simple family film, the kind that Sooraj Barjatya does with Salman Khan. But I want to project the hero in the Maryada Purshottam mould, the way Salman Khan did in Hum Aapke Hain Koun...! and Hum Saath Saath Hain.”

VHP protests over pregnant bride taking saat pheras in Laali Ki Shaadi Mein Laaddoo Deewana

A still of Akshara Haasan as the pregnant bride in the film
Shaheen Parkar (MID-DAY; April 4, 2017)

Members of a right-wing group have raised objection to a ‘saat phera’ scene in upcoming film Laali Ki Shaadi Mein Laaddoo Deewana and held protests outside the makers’ office yesterday. The said scene involves lead actress Akshara Haasan’s character, a pregnant girl, observing the ritual of seven rounds around the fire. Activists of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad argue that as per Hindu customs, if a pregnant woman participates in saat pheras, the child that she carries in her womb also gets married to the man.

Laali Ki Shaadi… producer TP Aggarwal says an activist had sent him a text message about cutting out that portion from the film after the promos went on air, but he didn’t pay heed to it. Yesterday, he was shocked to find a group of activists demonstrating outside his office in Andheri.

Says Aggarwal, “They raised slogans demanding that the scene be removed, but I told them the Censor Board has cleared the film and I won’t bow to pressure tactics. After protesting for a while, they dispersed. I categorically told them that the scene will not be deleted." Incidentally, in the long-running telly soap Balika Vadhu, a heavily pregnant Sugna (Vibha Anand) was shown getting married to Shyam (Vikrant Massey).

Meanwhile, Akshara continues to remain missing from the film’s promotions, as reported in hitlist on March 28.

When you don't have a filmy background, you can't be choosy-Gurmeet Choudhary

Neha Maheshwri (BOMBAY TIMES; April 3, 2017)

He is the quintessential Sooraj Barjatya's Prem on TV, but in films, Gurmeet Choudhary has always played a casanova. This time, though, he is doing a family entertainer - Laali Ki Shaadi Mein Laaddoo Deewana - purely for his fans. Ahead of the film's release, BT catches up with the actor for a candid chat about breaking away from the erotic hero image in Bollywood, working with star kids and fatherhood. Excerpts...

Are you looking at Laali Ki Shaadi... as an opportunity to break away from the image created by your previous erotic thrillers?
On television, people pictured me as Prem, which Salman Khan has been known as. Whenever people met me, they'd say that they wanted a husband like me for their daughter. But in movies, you don't have a choice. Wajah Tum Ho and Khamoshiyan weren't the kind of films my fans would have liked to see me in. Many said that they couldn't watch those films with their families. They wanted to see me romancing and dancing. So, when I heard Laali Ki Shaadi's script, I knew it's a character my fans would love and it is impactful as well.

You said your fans couldn't watch your previous films with their families. Given a choice, would you have chosen your career differently?
Not at all. Where I am today is a dream for so many people. When you don't have a filmy background, you can't be choosy. But yes, in the process, I declined some movies, too. I believe that you get work because of your previous projects. If I sit back and think that I want to do only a big-banner film, I would just be waiting.

How comfortable were you working alongside star kids in the film?
I have done too much work on TV and have also done a couple of films to be intimidated by star kids. I am a silent person on the set; I am respectful of other actors, but am not inhibited by them. Akshara (Haasan) and Vivaan (Shah) are simple and good actors. They were very grounded and we had fun on the sets. I used to tell Akshara that I have been a great fan of Kamal Haasan ever since I watched Chachi 420. Similarly, I would talk about Naseeruddin Shah with Vivaan.

In recent days, we have seen nepotism in Bollywood being a topic of discussion. What's your take on it?
The industry is ready to help if you are talented and hard-working. I agree that it's easier for a star kid to enter Bollywood, but that brings along with it a huge responsibility. They have to meet the standards set by their family. As an outsider, I don't have to face that pressure.

You recently adopted two girls - Pooja and Lata - from your hometown...
I am a big fan of Superman; he has the power to do nice things for human beings. We can also do the same using our power as a celebrity. Debina and I were thinking of adopting a kid since a long time. It finally happened last year after we discussed it with our parents. We have planned everything for them very carefully. I think it's just a start because people keep talking about women empowerment, but nobody takes any steps. I think I have done the right thing and hope people will follow it.

When are you bringing them to Mumbai?
That will need planning as such decisions can't be taken overnight. The girls come from a rural background, so bringing them here immediately will be a cultural shock for them. We are focussing on their education right now. We will do everything according to their comfort. We have not set a specific time frame because that will be put pressure on them. Similarly, there is no pressure on them to take my surname either. They call us Gurmeet and Debina, so we are friends. In today's time, the relationship between parents and kids should be that of friends. So, I don't mind them addressing me by my name. Debina and I talk to them every day. My life has changed after adopting them. I have the responsibility of looking after them.

Do you plan to have a biological kid anytime soon?
We haven't thought about it because we are busy in our careers. We haven't done any family planning and will take the step when we are ready.

I think like a dude sometimes. Dude's brain, girl's body-Akshara Haasan

Renuka Vyavahare (BOMBAY TIMES; April 1, 2017)

Akshara Haasan, the 25-year-old younger daughter of actors Kamal Haasan and Sarika, is not your quintessential Bollywood heroine. Sans make-up, sporting an androgynous dressing style and spouting Mumbaiyya Hinglish with a Tamil twang, the football player-turned-actor is unlike her contemporaries. She keeps the conversation real with her refreshing candour. In a free-wheeling chat with BT, the light-eyed beauty, who is a spitting image of her gorgeous mother, opens up about her iconic filmi lineage, her take on marriage post her parents' separation, her relationship with 'best friend' Tanuj Virwani and working with ex-boyfriend Vivaan Shah in the forthcoming film, Laali Ki Shaadi Mein Laaddoo Deewana. Excerpts...

You don't behave or dress like a conventional B-Town heroine...
I have played football for 20 years. I am also a trained dancer and it was dancing that made me realise that I can act. Even today, I forget that I am a heroine. I still do the things I used to do when I was an assistant director. I don't think you should change unless your behaviour affects someone negatively.

Were you always a tomboy?
I went to a boarding school where, among the 15 kids in my class, only three were girls. They were nice, but there was not much to talk about with them. I got along more with the guys. I hung out with them and I owe my love for cars majorly to them. In fact, I think like a dude sometimes. Dude's brain, girl's body! (laughs). My friends often address me, saying, 'Hey bro or Ae boy, come here'. I have to then remind them that I am a girl. This is the second time in my entire life that I have grown my hair and I did it only for my career.

Does your sister Shruti advise you to look a certain way, as she has that star quality in her?
Shruti has that aura, I am still trying to get there. She forces me to put on make-up (laughs). 'You better do this', she teases me. However, I like to keep it real as make-up suffocates my skin. So, I usually avoid it unless I am required to wear it.

There's this perception that star kids have it easy...
It depends on the context. If they are saying it in a derogatory way, I ask, 'What's your problem? Jalan hai kya?' I feel lucky to get these opportunities, but at the same time, I struggle as much as everyone else. If you choose not to see it, it's your fault. It's easy to throw my parents' names around, but I have to earn my own respect. If you are good at your job, people will take you seriously. They will probably be kinder to me because of my parents, but I want them to remember me as Akshara, the girl who worked really hard, made it on her own and didn't use her family name to achieve anything.

Who have you taken after?
Dad. I complete his sentences and know exactly what's going on in his head. The decisions I take in life remind me that I am a lot like him, especially when it comes to certain aspects like clear-headedness, conviction, fearlessness, hard work, discipline and taking no bullshit. In fact, both (mom and dad) are earnest, honest and gutsy people, who push boundaries without changing who they are. If they have an opinion, they will voice it.

You worked as an assistant director (AD) on your father's film, recently. Would you like him to watch you act on the set?
I am intimidated by my father. I respect him as an actor. If he comes on the set, I will keep trying to impress him. So, I'd suggest that he doesn't come, but having said that, it would also be nice to have him over. It's a fear I'd like to conquer. Working as an AD on his film was great. On the set, we are professionals, not father-daughter. We keep the personal equation out.

In times of trouble, who do you approach first?
In fact, I am the agony aunt in my family. I listen calmly and am very observant, so they like to vent when I am around.

Laali Ki Shaadi... revolves around marriage. Your parents separated when you were 10. Did that change your notion about marriage?
When my parents split (the couple is separated, not divorced), it hurt me a lot. You want your parents to be together, but I sat down and thought, if two people are not happy together, they probably shouldn't be together as that makes it worse. But it didn't change my perception of marriage.

Do you see yourself getting married?
Maybe, maybe not. It has become a façade now. People say, 'Meri shaadi ho gayi'. Six months later, they say, 'Divorce ho gaya!' Phir shaadi kyun ki? If you want to get married, do so whenever you think is the right time and do it for the right reason. Some may not want to get married and stay with the same person. Do whatever works for you.

Are you dating Tanuj Virwani?
We are best friends. We have a lot of common friends. Our group goes, 'So you guys are dating, huh?' I wonder where this news came from.

Your co-star in Laali..., Vivaan Shah, is your ex-boyfriend. So, how was it working with him?
We realised that our friendship was of much more value than our relationship, as we have known each other since childhood. We used to run around on the set of Hey Ram. It was easy to work with each other, as we have moved on and it's a friendship I will always cherish.

Speaking of Hey Ram, you are quite fond of Shah Rukh Khan...
I love him! I have grown up on his films. I was probably six years old when I met SRK on the set of Hey Ram. Since then, I have been in awe of him. He has that aura. You get so fascinated by him.

Akshara Haasan goes missing from Laali Ki Shaadi Mein Laaddoo Deewana promotions

Akshara Haasan
Shaheen Parkar (MID-DAY; March 28, 2017)

Akshara Haasan has disappeared from the promotions of her second Bollywood film, Laali Ki Shaadi Mein Laaddoo Deewana. The actress remains incommunicado, much to the chagrin of the makers. Reality show appearances with co-stars Vivaan Shah and Gurmeet Chaudhary have been lined up since the film is slated to release on April 7, but with Akshara missing in action, promotional activities have come to a grinding halt. At a recent film event, Vivaan and Gurmeet were spotted romancing her life-size cutout from the posters.

Says director Manish Harishankar, “She was co-operative during the film’s shoot. I really don’t know what has gotten into her now. She remains incommunicado. Repeated calls have gone unanswered. Her manager says she is tied up with other commitments. She only attended the trailer launch followed by media interaction.”

The makers understood that after her filmmaker-uncle Chandrahasan’s death earlier this month, she needed some time off to mourn and so, they let her be. However, even days later, she continues to remain unavailable. Sources say she was miffed when the trailer launch started late. There is also buzz that Akshara is in no mood to promote the film on rumoured beau Tanuj Virwani’s insistence. For starters, there were rumours of Akshara and Laali Ki Shaadi… co- star Vivaan being an item.

Manish adds, “We were slated to be on Kapil Sharma’s show, but everyone wants to know why the heroine is missing. I wish she would tell us what is going on in her mind.” Akshara, however, says, “I did make it to certain promotions, but couldn’t attend a few others due to my uncle’s demise.”

Sarkar 3 pushed ahead; should Begum Jaan’s release be preponed to April 7?

Ram Gopal Varma’s action thriller Sarkar 3 has been postponed from April 7 to May 12. The decision was announced yesterday (March 21), less than 3 weeks from its initial release. A lot of reasons have been doing the rounds for this step, from delay in post-production to non-payment of dues by Eros International.

The postponement has suddenly left a Friday vacant which we all know is criminal considering the number of clashes that happen in a year. It’s not that there are no other films releasing on April 7. There’s Mirza Juuliet and Laali Ki Shaadi Mein Laaddoo Deewana that will hit screens on the said day but both are very small and carry no buzz. Begum Jaan on the other hand releases on April 14, the same day as The Fate Of The Furious, the 8th part in the highly successful Furious franchise. The previous part in the series, Furious 7, was highly successful in India. It almost reached the 100-crore-mark, although this was more to do with the fact that it was Paul Walker’s last film. Yet, The Fate Of The Furious can still do huge business and might even steal the thunder from Begum Jaan.

Hence, it would be only logical if Bhatts, the producers of Begum Jaan, immediately prepone the release of the film from April 14 to April 7. The move will prove advantageous in every way. Firstly, it will be a solo release (since the other 2 films releasing on April 7 are hardly exciting) and hence can get sufficient amount of screens. There would be no threat from last week’s release (Naam Shabana) as again it’s a small film and is not expected to really rock the box office. The promotions of the film have already started and advancing the release by a week won’t impact hence. Lastly, the film has already received a Censor certificate.

Begum Jaan features Vidya Balan, a highly talented actress but who hasn’t given a commercial hit in 5 years. Begum Jaan trailer has made an impact and the film can turn out to be a decent success, if it releases at an appropriate time. Releasing with The Fate Of The Furious would be a bad idea, especially since the week before is vacant with no major releases. Hope the Bhatts understand this point and do the needful!

Son Vivaan wants Naseeruddin Shah to direct him in a film

Naseeruddin Shah with son Vivaan Shah
Shaheen Parkar (MID-DAY; March 21, 2017)

Vivaan Shah has two acting institutes at home — father, Naseeruddin, and mother, Ratna Pathak. The young actor is keen that his father wield the directorial baton again, after his 2006 directorial debut, Yun Hota To Kya Hota failed to soar at the box office. There are two stories that are close to the veteran actor’s heart — Ismat Chughtai’s Niwala and Oscar Wilde’s The Canterville Ghost. Naseer has already written the screenplay for the former, says Vivaan. “It’s a story about a woman who sees this guy on the bus daily. She falls for him and, one day, decides to dress up to grab his attention. Ironically, that day, he does not recognise her.”

Vivaan considers his father a reservoir of knowledge and often urges him to put his learning on paper and pen a book. “He has decades of experience in conducting acting workshops at numerous institutes and an academic approach to the art. He needs to write like legends including, Konstantin Stanislavski and Lee Strasberg.”

Naseer’s last directorial venture, which starred Konkana Sen Sharma, Paresh Rawal, Irrfan Khan and Ayesha Takia, left him with bitter memories. It is alleged that he had creative differences with the producers. Vivaan adds that he is still hesitant to helm a film. “He prefers to be the general of our theatre group, but we are trying to coax him [to direct films instead]. Hopefully, he will listen and have a role for me,” he chuckles.

For the young actor, the term career is too highfalutin. “Dad has told not to have a game plan when it comes to choosing films. He says, an actor does not choose films, films choose him. I keep my options open and want to do all kinds of cinema. Commercial cinema is the toughest.”

At 27, he is happy with the kind of films he has been associated with. After 7 Khoon Maaf (2011), Happy New Year (2014) and Bombay Velvet (2015), his upcoming film, Manish Harishankar’s Laali Ki Shaadi Mein Laaddoo Deewana pairs him with Akshara Haasan. “It is a fun romantic outing. I am lucky to find work consistently. It is difficult for actors to sustain. Had I not been my father’s son, no one would have known me.”

Rahat Fateh Ali Khan's voice replaced in upcoming film for not condemning the Uri Attack

T P Aggarwal has decided to replace the Pak singer's voice with an Indian one for a song in his new film.
Avinash Lohana (MUMBAI MIRROR; September 29, 2016)

Looks like the ongoing protests seeking ban on Pakistani artistes in India following the Uri attacks is only gathering more steam. Mirror has learnt that filmmaker T P Aggarwal is gearing up to replace Pakistani singer Rahat Fateh Ali Khan’s romantic track “Maine socha na tha” for his film, Laali Ki Shaadi Mein Laaddoo Deewana, with a version sung by an Indian singer. The makers are now looking for another singer even as they gear up to inform Rahat about their decision.

“We didn’t want to do this because it’s a lovely song. Rahat is a great singer and he has sung it beautifully. However, my bone of contention is that neither he nor any of the other Pakistani artistes in India have condemned the attack. After the Peshawar attacks, we had started one of our meetings at the Indian Motion Pictures Producers Association (IMPAA) with a tribute to the victims and survivors,” Aggarwal informed Mirror. The film features Vivaan Shah, Akshara Haasan, Gurmeet Choudhary and Kavitta Varma in pivotal roles. It revolves around a royal marriage and characters who are hilariously trapped in their own tragedies. The song was picturised on Vivaan and Akshara in Kashmir this March.

Aggarwal believes he’d be better off promoting Indian talent instead of the ones from Pakistan while his director, Manish Harishankar, echoes his views. “They (Pak artistes) make good money here and also enjoy a lot of fame. I know they speak well of us but in a situation like this, it’s sad that they haven’t come out in support,” asserts Manish.

I used to practice kick-boxing on my brother-Gurmeet Choudhary

From playing Ram on television to being the bad guy in Khamoshiyan, Gurmeet Choudhary has had a rather impressive rise to stardom over the last eight years. Below is an excerpt from an interview
Noyon Parasara (BOMBAY TIMES; March 11, 2016)

Was it your childhood dream to be a Bollywood star?
Yes! I was so filmi that I was called Shashi Kapoor at home. Like they say, when someone wishes for something passionately, it works out. A small town guy like me coming this far is proof of that. Till date, my friends call me by that name. My elder brother is called Raj Kapoor. My family is a fan of the Kapoor family!

So, who are you a bigger fan of - Shashi Kapoor or Shah Rukh Khan?
I have an emotional connect with Shashi Kapoor for obvious reasons. But Shah Rukh Khan is an inspiration. When I was new in Mumbai, I used to feel low and wonder if dreams actually come true. I used go to Bandra and look at SRK's bungalow. Just looking at it would give me the strength to work harder. I always express my love for him whenever possible. When my wife told him that I am his fan, he said that he knows about it.

Your wedding with Debina was rather filmi. Tell us about it...
We got married before Ramayan happened. We got officially wedded in 2011 but we had actually got married in a temple much earlier in a rather filmi way. A few friends were a part of the ceremony and our families did not know. We hid it from the world as I wanted to do an official wedding when I was capable of fulfilling every wish of Debina.

You worked with Debina in Ramayan, Fear Factor: Khatron Ke Khiladi, Nach Baliye and Khamoshiyan. We believe you want her to be a part of all your films?
She has been extremely lucky for me. My life changed after she came into it. So, I always ask her to be involved in some way in whatever I do. Even if it is just for a fleeting appearance!

How did your career change after Khamoshiyan?
Now people consider me a part of the film industry and I get offers accordingly. It is my prerogative if I want to do a film or not. So, my career has started all over again and I am working harder than ever.

Kickboxing has been a part of your life since you were a kid. Did you ever beat anyone just to show off what you learnt?
Oh, I have beaten up my elder brother many times (laughs). But I was very protective of him in school and picked up fights with anyone who would bully him.

Tell us about your next Laali Ki Shaadi Mein Laaddoo Deewana...
It is a brilliant script and also stars Akshara Haasan and Vivaan Shah. My fans will see me in an avatar they will like.

You were nominated at the Filmfare Awards this year...
I am lucky that I was nominated for my very first film. I have left space on my awards wall at home, just for a Filmfare Award. This time I was nominated, soon I hope to win it. The empty space motivates me.

I don't want to set any boundaries; I would like to work with different directors and actors-Gurmeet Choudhary

Sonil Dedhia (BOMBAY TIMES; January 28, 2016)

Gurmeet Choudhary became a popular name with his very first serial Ramayan. In his teleseries Geet Hui Sabse Parayi, he got the lovely ladies swooning over his stubble look and chiselled body. Punar Vivah, his next show, was a hot favourite amongst the audience, and following the success of that, reality shows like Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa 5 and Khatron Ke Khiladi 5 made Gurmeet a sought after face on TV.

After a successful stint on the small screen, Gurmeet ventured into Bollywood with Khamoshiyan. He will soon be seen in his second film Laali Ki Shaadi Mein Laaddoo Deewana. He excitedly says, “It's a comedy in which I play a prince. I can't divulge any more details but I can tell you that I'm doing something that my fans will enjoy watching. I'm eagerly waiting for its release.“

He credits his wife Debina Bonnerjee for all the success, “She has been my pillar of strength and has supported me in all my decisions. I discuss my work with her at length and her clarity of thought has always helped me choose good roles,“ he says.

Gurmeet is a self-confessed fitness junkie. Staying fit has always been his priority and it gives him an irresistible high. “I make sure that I take time out to exercise. I regularly practice kick-boxing, gymnastics, yoga, swimming and dancing to stay fit. Even when I am holidaying, I don't miss my workouts. In the worst case scenario, if I miss my gym class, I walk up to my home which is on the 25th floor,“ he emphasises.

The actor, who came to Mumbai as a 19-year-old boy with big dreams of becoming a film actor, has moulded himself for the silver screen, “I don't come from a filmi background, so when I landed in Mumbai, I was a bit lost and had no one to guide me. One day I managed to meet Yash Chopra and he advised me to do television. He said Shah Rukh Khan is the best example and he explained, 'SRK started his career as a TV actor. Why don't you also do TV shows and make a name for yourself, and then gradually move to films'. That's how I started doing serials and there has been no looking back ever since.“

Quiz Gurmeet if he will get back to television and he says, “I won't be able to a daily soap because of time constraints, but if there is a finite series and I have an interesting role, then I can think about it. TV is a huge medium and it has made me who I am today .“

Talking about his future plans he says, “I am really enjoying this phase in my career. I am being a little choosy when it comes to my work and I don't want to rush and take any wrong decisions. Quality work has always been my priority. I don't want to set any boundaries; I would like to work with different directors and actors.“
