Krazzy 4 director Jaideep Sen starts crowdfunding for a heart transplant surgery

Jaideep Sen, who directed Krazzy 4 (2008), is suffering from a heart condition called Hypertrophic Obstructive Cardiomyopathy (HOCM) and needs to undergo a heart transplant. Since he’s unable to afford it, he has turned to crowdfunding. “This year, I have been hospitalized twice — in February and May. I missed death narrowly the second time and was on ventilator support for three days. My cardiologist has told me that I need a heart transplant as there’s no other way out,” he shares.
He adds, “Currently, I am number one on the heart recipient list in Mumbai. But the cost of the surgery is Rs. 35 lakh and I have been asked to keep a contingency of Rs. 15 lakh more. As per hospital policy, they can confirm the surgery only after the entire Rs. 35 lakh is deposited. My savings are miniscule compared to the amount I need. Unfortunately, in our industry, unless you become a successful brand, you are always underpaid.”
Sen adds that the industry has stepped up to help him. “Some of them have contributed in whatever capacity they could. Whatever comes from their heart, I accept that,” says Sen, adding that since Krazzy 4, he hasn’t been offered much work in Bollywood.
“In the last 13 years, there have been so many phases where I had no work. The reality of the film industry is such that often genius bhookhe reh jaate hain, aur gadhe gulab jamun khaate hain. I am a living example of that. So many directors have made failed films, yet they got so much work. But for some strange reason, I didn’t get work,” he ends.
Shah Rukh Khan makes everything effortlessly cool and doesn’t need to overdo his clothing-Shaleena Nathani

As told to Nishi Tiwari (MUMBAI MIRROR; February 24, 2020)
I was assisting Anaita Shroff Adajania and we used to work a lot with Shah Rukh Khan. One of the first assignments was the song for Krazzy 4. I also worked on Ra.One. I started working with him again after going independent. It’s been an organic journey.Shah Rukh Khan has fantastic personal style and taste in clothes. Nobody can do it the way he does. It could be his beautiful hair flopping on his face, the way he walks, the way his cargos fall on his shoes or the way he casually carries off rolled-up shirt sleeves. He makes everything effortlessly cool and doesn’t need to overdo his clothing. It’s all about simplicity with him. Moreover, his intelligence and charm become a part of the outfit.
He is always well-dressed. There are times he comes into a shoot and we are like, “Can you please not change, we love what you’re wearing.” He loves jackets and sneakers, and loves to shop, particularly in London, New York, Los Angeles and Dubai. It’s amazing to go shopping with Shah Rukh because you can buy the whole store.
Sometimes, we may have to convince him to wear something, but it’s not a difficult task; we have the most amazing team. For example, he likes dark colours, so when we want to get him to wear blue, we have to convince him. “No, no, it’s black,” we tell him. Then, he puts it on and looks really good in it.
Some of the things Shah Rukh is really comfortable with is cargos, T-shirts made out of beautiful fabric, oversized hoodies and sneakers. He really likes sunglasses and has a huge collection of everything. We frequently use stuff from his closet to mix and match. It’s fun as there are so many brands that aren’t available in India.
I believe that a man can wear anything, as long as he can carry it off. Elements like fabric, which should be of good quality and not stiff (especially collars and cuffs), should be taken into consideration. The clothes should look slightly worn in, a little aged; not brand new. For example, we spent some time customising a jacket for Zero, and made similar pieces for the whole crew. It was a double-layer jacket with a chequered shirt and a hoodie, so you could detach the jacket. It was personalised for everyone and had a lot of distressing. Most of the customising was Shah Rukh’s idea.
WHITE APPEAL: A traditional tuxedo can be boring, so we went with white. The colour looks great against Shah Rukh’s beautiful olive skin
TRAVELLING IN VOGUE: This doublelayer, detachable jacket, was customised for the film Zero. It was paired with a chequered shirt and a hoodie
SRK’S DAY OUT: I really like this outfit as he is wearing a Givenchy shirt with it. The little stars and the collar detail add an extra dimension to it. We added a light grey jacket for a day feel
GOING FOR GOLD: We added a little bit of zing to this classic look for an awards show with gold buttons and a printed cravat
DANCING WITH THE STARS: Since it was Independence Day and a fun TV show, we wanted to go for a lighter mood. We chose a pastel achkan and dressed it up with metallic buttons
After Krazzy 4, Juhi Chawla-Arshad Warsi reunite for an untitled psychological thriller

Shravan Shah (MUMBAI MIRROR; March 15, 2018)
Juhi Chawla and Arshad Warsi who last shared screen space in 2008 in
Jaideep Sen’s Krazzy 4, are set for a reunion. The actress has a guest
spot in Arshad’s next film, an as-yet untitled psychological thriller
directed by ad filmmaker Niddish Puuzhakkal, for which she started
shooting on Monday. The film follows a common man who finds himself in uncommon situations. Juhi’s cameo adds a twist to the edge-of-the-seat story. “The film is a new space for me as I am not playing the usual Miss Goody-two-shoes. My character is challenging and the first morning started with discussions on how I should play it. We finally kicked the shoot at 1 pm,” Juhi reminisces, pointing out that after Arjun Pandit (1999) and Gulaab Gang (2014), this is only her third film in which she plays a character with shades of gray.
After shooting her parts over three days, Juhi is set to feature in a song, which will be filmed later this month. “The film is highly stylised and unusual, a far cry from the run-of-the-mill kind of films. Though the treatment is very different, the audience will find something familiar in it too,” Juhi promises.
The film, which wraps up by month-end, also features Divya Dutta as Arshad’s wife.
A film that has an emotional impact lasts longer in public memory-Rakesh Roshan

Hiren Kotwani (BOMBAY TIMES; January 23, 2017)
Usually, it's safe to assume
that a clash at the box office leaves producers feeling the heat and
losing sleep over it. However, Rakesh Roshan comes across unfazed by the
inevitable ticket-window war between his production Kaabil and Shah Rukh
Khan's Raees. His composure screams loud. Few days before the release
of his film, Roshan Sr talks about what makes him a confident filmmaker,
his relationship with his son Hrithik and how he catches with the
changing times.
It's rare for you to not direct a film produced by you. What prompted you to support Sanjay Gupta on Kaabil after Jazbaa's commercial failure?
I'm a fan of Sanjay's work. His films are technically well-shot. He has seen box office success, but I also feel that sometimes even when he chose a great subject, the screenplay fell short. When he came to me with Kaabil's story, I asked him if I could work with him on the screenplay. He understood my point. I wanted my emotions and his technique to blend in. He's done a better job of the film than I would have.
Did you ever have creative differences with Sanjay?
Sanjay and I walked together at every step. If we had differences, it was only to reach a common goal: This film has to work.
Krazzy 4 and Kites were also produced by you and directed by others. The films tanked at the box office. What makes you confident about Kaabil?
I was confident about Kites and Krazzy4 and I am equally confident about Kaabil. Sometimes, we just fail to match our thoughts with the audience. We miscalculate what our audience seeks from a movie at a given time. It's fine if you make a movie and don't succeed. Kites and Krazzy 4 were well made but I can only support a film till the day of the release. Friday onwards, it's in the hands of the audience.
What went wrong with Kites, which was one of your most ambitious projects?
I was heading into international waters with Kites. Maybe it was too early. The lead actress was Mexican, hence the foreign language. I always think and act progressively. It works and some times, it doesn't. I'm not concocting a commercial film with forced item songs and double-meaning dialogue to make it work. I always try to give something new to the audience.
With three decades behind you as a filmmaker, do you keep abreast with the films around you?
I watch every film that releases. I want to know what works for the audience. I don't like a few things that I liked earlier. The requirement of the audience is changing with every film. What doesn't change is the emotional quotient of films, whether it's Bollywood or Hollywood. Dangal, Sultan, Pink, Neerja and MS Dhoni: The Untold Story have strong emotional content. If your subject is wafer-thin and lacks emotion, your film will not have a great shelf-life. And I'm not talking box-office here. A film that has an emotional impact lasts longer in public memory.
On the personal front, plenty has changed with Hrithik moving out of the family home. Do you miss having him around?
He's always around. Even when he stayed with us, he'd sleep in his room and we'd seldom meet because of his busy schedule. Now, he comes home in the morning, we gym together, we discuss things, he goes to shoot and returns in the evening. It's good in a way. A person gains more experience with an ounce of freedom. Our bond is strong as ever.
In a matter of days, Kaabil and Raees will clash at the box office. What are your thoughts now?
We're ready and I'm sticking to the date announced. Maybe, it's my destiny that I can't have a bigger box office as it's not a solo release. I'll be fine with what I get. At least, I haven't encroached on someone's pre-decided date.
In hindsight, do you think meeting Shah Rukh Khan and Ritesh Sidhwani was in vain?
They asked me to shift my date and I told them I don't shift dates. So they said they were releasing the on same date, and I said fine.
But you did change your mind about releasing Krrish 4 with another Shah Rukh Khan's film on Christmas 2018?
Kaabil was ready in August last year. I could have released it in October, November or even, December, but the dates were taken by other films. I opted for January 26 as it was a free window then. Clashes are averted in Hollywood too, as everyone, including distributors and exhibitors get affected by it. As a mature and experienced filmmaker, I would've never chosen a date taken by someone else and I won't do that in future too. When I learnt that Christmas 2018 was taken, I immediately backed out. I'll find another date which is free.
After Kaabil, what's next?
I'm working on Krrish 4. It will take me a-year-and-a-half to write and complete pre-production. While making a big movie, everything has to be ready on paper. Our budgets are not as huge as Hollywood. With the world shrinking, thanks to technology, an Indian filmmaker's work will be compared to an international counterpart. Our focus should be content and not high-end action.

I would love to do another Karan Arjun with Shah Rukh Khan & Hrithik-Rakesh Roshan

Despite their upcoming clash at the box-office clash, Roshan Sr says he’d like to cast the superstar in a two-hero film with son Hrithik
Sonil Dedhia (MID-DAY; January 17, 2017)
Hrithik Roshan’s Kaabil and Shah Rukh Khan’s Raees are set to release on January 25. While trade experts claim that the collections of both movies will be hugely impacted due to the box-office clash, filmmaker Rakesh Roshan is unfazed.
He says, “Nothing bothers me because whatever is written in my destiny will come to me. However, I wouldn’t have released my film if I’d known that another movie is also releasing on the same day, because I am aware of the blood and sweat the entire cast and crew puts in to make a film.”
Roshan Sr, who has worked with Shah Rukh Khan in films like King Uncle (1993), Karan Arjun (1995) and Koyla (1997), says he has always had a healthy working relationship with the superstar. “I am very fond of Shah Rukh and his wife Gauri. I am really close to his entire family. I remember shooting for Krazzy 4 (2008), in which Hrithik was supposed to do a special number. But he had to back out at the last moment due to a knee injury. When I discussed the problem with Shah Rukh, he immediately agreed to do the song,” says the filmmaker.
He adds that he would love to do a film with SRK again if anything worthy comes up. “Hrithik will also star in my movies. If I ever work on a two-hero film like Karan Arjun, where both the male actors have equal roles, I’ll approach Shah Rukh,” Rakesh signs off.
