I had to lose weight for Meenakshi Sundareshwar. After it was shot, I had to regain extra weight for Nikamma-Abhimanyu Dassani

Abhimanyu on how he piled on 10 kilos for Nikamma, only to shed it in months for Meenakshi Sundareshwar
Mohar Basu (MID-DAY; June 6, 2022)

Abhimanyu Dassani is gearing up for the release of Nikamma, which went on floors in early 2020. Sabbir Khan’s directorial offering, also starring Shilpa Shetty Kundra and Shirley Setia, required Dassani to pile on 10 kilos to sport a muscular look. The actor remembers beginning his physical prep for the actioner in late 2019.

“I had to put on a lot of weight, but at the same time, I had to sport a chiselled look. In 2019, I trained in Krav Maga in Turkey and learnt hand-to-hand combat for the film. I had to look the part of a ‘nikamma’. My hair had to be [messy], almost an out-of-bed look,” says Dassani.

The weight gain was aided by a strict diet plan. The actor banked on a five-meal plan, comprising wholesome home-made food. “For lunch and dinner, I had two bowls of protein, mostly chicken, with a bowl of green vegetables and some brown rice. I complemented this with a stipulated water intake, and hitting the gym.”

Dassani had a bigger challenge after a chunk of the movie was shot. The actor was expected to shed the extra kilos soon, as he was to begin filming Meenakshi Sundareshwar (2021), which required him to adopt a lean guy-next-door look.

He remembers, “I had to lose all the weight for Meenakshi Sundareshwar. [After the film was shot], I had to regain the [extra] weight for Nikamma because we had a few days’ shoot and a song sequence left.”

Anshuman Jha trains hard to master Krav Maga for his upcoming film, Lakadbaggha

Sugandha Rawal (HINDUSTAN TIMES; August 31, 2021)

Actor Anshuman Jha is gearing up for some nail-biting hand-to-hand combat on screen, for which he is taking professional training. While the actor is well-versed with several fighting styles, the one he is learning for the film is quite different.

Known as Krav Maga, this mixed-martial art and self- defence system is at the core of action that Jha’s character will perform in the upcoming film, Lakadbaggha. “I have also trained in Kalaripayattu and Parkour in between, but Krav Maga is a different beast,” says the actor, who reveals that being trained in taekwondo as a kid, did help him to a certain extent. “Because of my training in taekwondo, my basics are in the right direction,” he shares.

Prepping for the action sequence since July, the actor is now in New York to train with Tsahi Shemesh, a self-defence expert, specialising in Krav Maga.

The Hum Bhi Akele Tum Bhi Akele actor has put many months of hard work into the craft, and admits he has been feeling the strongest. “Sparring with Shemesh on the floor is a reality check on how far ahead the road is for me,” he says, adding, “Any martial arts form is eventually about kicks and punches, defence and offence. Only the form and style changes. Balance remains the key. But the body reacts differently to when you’re 12 to when you re 32. But I’m feeling 12 again. The curiosity to discover and learn can do magic to the mind and brain.”

For Jha, the journey has been a physically challenging one, but he aims to ace the martial art , and not just learn it for the film. “It’s pushing my mind, body and core. But that will eventually help me perform, as the movement will flow and not look forced. I want to give it my 200% so that the audience doesn’t feel let down in any aspect of the film. It’s our responsibility as artistes to serve the best that we can,” he shares.

Thanks to his training, the actor promises some raw, in-your-face hand to hand combat in the action flick. “The film combines my two biggest passions —love for animals and action — so I’m invested. There’s action with a purpose. There’ll be an eclectic fusion of Indian and foreign cast, crew to bring forth their expertise for a first of its kind film in the genre from India,” he ends.

Set to feature in the upcoming actioner, Khuda Haafiz, Shiv Panditt, as an Arab commando, will be seen pulling off a series of high-octane stunts.

Apart from undergoing a rigorous physical training routine, he upped his skills under the guidance of renowned action director Andy Long Nguyen, who has been associated with films of Hollywood icon, Jackie Chan. "Andy's style of action, professionalism and his eye for detail is mind-blowing. He, along with his team, made shooting difficult action scenes seem like a piece of cake. It was interesting to see that while he made us execute difficult stunts, he ensured all safety [measures] were in place," says the actor, who learnt hand-to-hand combat routines, and martial art forms like the Keysi fighting technique, seen in the Batman franchise, and Krav Maga, involving close-quarter combat and grappling moves.

Dhaakad belongs in same space as Resident Evil-Kangana Ranaut

Kangana Ranaut: Dhaakad belongs in same space as Resident Evil
Excited about her first contemporary actioner, Kangana Ranaut charts her prep for Dhaakad
Upala KBR (MID-DAY; September 12, 2019)

A still from Resident EvilCome January, Kangana Ranaut will begin prep for her first contemporary action film, Dhaakad. To do justice to her mean killing machine act, the actor will train in Krav Maga — the military self-defence form that was originally developed for the Israel Defence Forces — and hand-to-hand combat.

Director Razneesh Ghai, who aims to give Bollywood its first female-led actioner with Dhaakad, has charted out a 45-day training for his leading lady. "Manikarnika was a period film that had Kangana training with swords. But since Dhaakad is a contemporary movie, the style of action is different. She will have to undergo a six-week programme — besides learning hand-to-hand combat and Krav Maga for two weeks each, she will dedicate a fortnight to learn how to use guns. A team of stunt directors from Thailand will train her."

Currently neck-deep in the prep for Thalaivi that rolls later this year, Ranaut is itching to display her action avatar on the big screen. "Dhaakad is in the same space as Resident Evil," says the actor, drawing parallels with the Hollywood sci-fi action film series, which has the protagonist fighting a multi-national company that surreptitiously deals in biological warfare.

"The movie has several chase sequences and sword fights. I will use all kinds of sophisticated weapons, including some of the latest machine guns. I believe one must pick up new skills for every movie. I don't like to rush into any project as it makes me anxious."

For Baaghi 3, we have Tiger Shroff taking over a city and breaking it down-Ahmed Khan

With the third Baaghi film, producer Sajid Nadiadwala and director Ahmed Khan up the action ante by pitting their hero against a location; the film will be shot in Georgia, Serbia, Turkey and India
Avinash Lohana (MUMBAI MIRROR; July 11, 2019)

Ahmed Khan who recently returned to the Bay from Agra where he was on a recce for the third instalment of the Sajid Nadiadwala-produced Baaghi franchise which reunites Tiger Shroff and Shraddha Kapoor, is all set to take the action one level up in the film which is expected to roll by August-end. He promises that his leading man “will cross all limits this time”, pointing out that after the previous film, the responsibility has multiplied three-fold and he has to make sure that he delivers on expectations.

“In Baaghi 2, Tiger jumped off a cliff to land on a mid-air chopper. He also performed stunts on water. This time we have him taking over a city and breaking it down, besides jumping off cliffs and skyscrapers and setting off blasts,” informs Ahmed.

As part of his prep, his hero will be going to Israel to train in Krav Maga as soon as he wraps up his film with Hrithik Roshan. Krav Maga is a military self-defence and fighting system developed for the Israel Defence Forces and security, derived from a combination of techniques sourced from boxing, wrestling, aikido, judo, karate and realistic fighting. “Tiger will be there for eight-10 days and is really looking forward to it. He has so much to give and always up for it,” says the director.

After Israel, the actor will be travelling to Georgia for training in machine guns, pistols, shotguns and other weapons. “We are not naming any place in particular and will be filming in Georgia, Turkey and Serbia. We are also building sets and have a schedule in India too and should lock the location by this week,” says Ahmed who will be travelling to Georgia a couple of more times before the film rolls.

He is all praise for his leading lady who will next be seen with Prabhas in Saaho which opens on Independence Day. “It’s a different kind of action for Shraddha, not gimmicky or typical maar-dhaad. It’s a combination of mind and speed, very slick and international. We are still planning what kind of training she will need to go through, but I can assure that she will surprise everyone,” promises Ahmed who has Chashme Buddoor and Katha director Sai Paranjpye’s grandson Abeer Abhyankar and yesteryear villain ‘Loin’ Ajit’s grandson Faaris Khan assisting him on the film. “I have known them for a while, they had assisted me on a commercial earlier. Sai ma’am and Ajit saab have given so much to the industry, we can only take their legacy forward,” he signs off with a smile.

Tiger Shroff to learn Krav Maga for Baaghi 3 shoot

Tiger Shroff to train in combat techniques employed by Mossad ahead of Baaghi 3 shoot
Upala KBR (MID-DAY; December 20, 2018)

Ahmed KhanTiger Shroff is ready to up his killing-machine act for Baaghi 3. Before the film rolls next year, director Ahmed Khan wants the actor to train in combat techniques that are used by agents of Mossad, Israel's national intelligence agency.

Says a source, "Tiger will head to Israel to pick up combat styles that are taught at Mossad. They excel in particular forms of martial arts that include hand-to-hand combat, hand strikes, throws, grappling and choking. He will also learn Krav Maga, which is essentially a military self-defence system developed for the Israel Defence Forces (IDF)."

Khan says, "I am figuring out how to approach these training agencies, including the Academi in the US. I want the action in Baaghi 3 to be authentic. While Tiger reprises his role as Ronnie, the sequel won't kick off from where Baaghi 2 (2018) ended."

I feared that if I told Baby's makers about my injury, they'd throw me out of the film-Taapsee Pannu

As told to Natasha Coutinho (MUMBAI MIRROR; September 4, 2017)

Two years ago, for the Neeraj Pandey-directed spy thriller Baby, in which I played officer Shabana Khan, I trained in Krav Maga, an Israeli self-defence technique. That was the first time I was trying martial arts so it was a different kind of challenge. I had a few action sequences in the film and I think I pulled them off convincingly because my performance got me a lot of raves. Two-three months after the film's release I was told to continue with my training as a prequel was being planned.

Naam Shabana released earlier this year on March 31. I trained intensively for 10-12 months before the film went on the floors. Not only Krav Maga, I also learnt Aikido, a modern Japanese martial arts form developed by Morihei Ueshiba. The prep was a compulsion as I'm shown as an Aikido player and there was a college tournament sequence in the script which sees me displaying my skills. I had to get it bang on for the sequence to look authentic. I also learnt basic Mixed Martial Arts. It's important to know MMA to pull off different kinds of fights. I remember I was busy with the promotions of Shoojit Sircar's Pink at the time. I had to find time in my hectic schedule for the two-hour martial arts course, either before or after my daily commitments. I trained with Mehul Vora and Jatin Naik from Akshay Kumar's academy of self defense. Fortunately I picked it up fast and the martial arts made me physically strong. There were no new injuries but a pelvic injury I had suffered during the Baby shoot resurfaced. I had a labral tear in my hip joint and the high kicks aggravated it. So, after training for two hours, I had to go for physiotherapy sessions for the next two hours. That was a stressful time! I'd been a little apprehensive during the Baby shoot as it was only my second Hindi film after Chashme Baddoor. I thought that if I told anyone from the film's team about my injury, they would throw me out immediately. So, I would quietly attend physiotherapy session. No one found out till after we had finished shooting the fight sequence.

I still practice martial arts whenever I have some time to myself because now it's just about brushing up my skills. I was already playing squash to stay fit. I think I am genetically athletic and enjoy the challenge of learning something like martial arts, which helps me up my fitness quotient.

I also think it is important for everyone to learn some form of self defense, in particular women who should be well prepared to look after themselves and react according to the situation. As a kid I was always running around and enjoying outdoor sports. My family was always worried about me getting injured but I personally would recommend it to everyone. Any sport helps one in the long run.

Check out bespectacled Ranbir Kapoor shooting for Jagga Jasoos in Mumbai

Jagga is 30
Ranbir Kapoor's search for his missing father now takes him to a Mumbai studio
Ankur Pathak (MUMBAI MIRROR; December 10, 2014)

After travelling to Cape Town in South Africa and the picturesque Pai in Thailand, Anurag Basu's detective caper, Jagga Jasoos, has finally landed in Mumbai's Filmistan Studio where the film's shooting is underway.

Mirror 'framed' Ranbir Kapoor as he was stepping into his van for a costume change. A source close to the unit revealed, "Ranbir's look in the film goes through a drastic makeover as he ages from an 18 year old to a man in his mid-thirties."

The film's story revolves around a gifted boy who goes country hopping in the search of his missing father. "The film has a lot of children who play Jagga's informants and help him with clues. After the Mumbai schedule, a major chunk of the film will be complete." the source added.

Jagga Jasoos, which will also mark the debut of Ranbir as a producer, is being planned as a musical with Pritam composing 20-odd songs. In an interview to Mirror (October 6), he had said, "They are small ditties which carry forward a conversation."

The film also boasts of some quirky action-based slapstick comedy. "Both Ranbir and Katrina have trained in the Israeli martial art of Krav Maga for the same," the source concluded.

Check out Ranbir Kapoor shooting his final scene of Roy in Mumbai

It’s a wrap for Ranbir the art thief!
Ankur Pathak (MUMBAI MIRROR; November 29, 2014)

Last Wednesday, Ranbir Kapoor was spotted shooting for Vikramjit Singh's upcoming film Roy at a plush hotel in Lower Parel.

A source from the unit revealed that the film's climax was being canned with RK fighting off the baddies in a hand-to-hand combat scene.

The source said: "It was a complex shoot, but was wrapped up in time as Ranbir had to dash off to Shimla for Imtiaz Ali's Tamasha that very evening. It was an action sequence and RK was seen practising Krav Maga -- a form of self-defence system used mostly by Israeli military men.

RK had been training in Krav Maga since the past few weeks and thanks to his training, the shoot progressed without any hiccups."

The source added that with this schedule, RK's portions in Roy are complete.

"Now, Vikram has to shoot with Arjun Rampal and Jacqueline Fernandez for about 10 days and with that it will be a wrap for the much-delayed Roy. The director is racing against time to complete the climax as the film's teaser is scheduled to release in December. "

In the film, Ranbir plays the title role of an art thief while Arjun Rampal plays a writer. Jacqueline Fernandez has a double role and will be seen essaying the role of a film director in one. The film will release in February 2015.

Katrina Kaif shoots tough action scene with Ranbir Kapoor in SA jungles for Jagga Jasoos

Kat, Ranbir hit it off
Roshmilla Bhattacharya (MUMBAI MIRROR; June 11, 2014)

Katrina Kaif and Ranbir Kapoor are currently in South Africa for Anurag Basu's Jagga Jasoos and the trip is proving to be an adrenaline fuelled one. Mirror has learnt that yesterday the stars ventured deep into the jungles to shoot some high-octane action.

They canned a grit-and-grime sequence that left Katrina with a heady high. Reason: She didn't have to pout and preen like a doll around Ranbir who's playing a sleuth in the film. She was part of the action.

And to ensure that she got it right, Katrina has trained in a specialised martial arts form as part of her homework. Confirmed a source close to the actress, "Yes, she has been undergoing training in Krav Maga."

Krav Maga is self-defense system developed for the Israeli armed forces. It combines techniques from boxing, savate, Muay Thai, Wing Chun, Judo, Jiu-jitsu, wrestling, grappling and realistic fight training.

The actress had earlier learnt scuba diving for Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara and a mix of martial arts, gymnastics and a bit of parkour for another multi-starrer which released last year.
