Flight and Koi Jaane Na have poor opening; South release record better collections

Box Office - Koi Jaane Na and Flight struggle to get footfalls on opening day
Box Office India Trade Network

There were two Hindi films released on Friday with FLIGHT and KOI JAANE NA and both had very limited collections with KOI JAANE NA being the better of the two. Its very difficult for these type of films to find any audience in the present situation but neither will have the content say like a RAMPRASAD KI TEHRVI which a very small minority will like and keep it afloat in cinemas for a prolonged period though without much collections.

The South is seeing better results as they had three main releases with SULTHAN in Tamil, WILD DOG in Telugu and YUVARATHNAA in Kannada. YUVARATHNAA was the best of the lot as with a Thursday release it got to around 13 crore nett in two days but the the Karantaka state got hit with the 50% capacity rule and the collections of the film came down heavily on Saturday. This film looked set for a good run but still should manage to do pretty well in the long run.

The Tamil film SULTHAN also fared well with 7 crore nett on Friday followed up with 5 crore nett on Saturday. These are the best results seen in this market since MASTER in January which is the only film to cross 150 crore nett in India post the Coronavirus pandemic.

The Telugu film WILD DOG was a poor fare considering a lot of Telugu films have fared well. This film featured Nagurjana who featured in some Hindi films in the 90's with the Maharashtra HIT SHIVA (1990) and the Amitabh Bachchan starrer KHUDA GAWAH (1992) among others. This film collected 2 crore nett on Friday and then there was a big drop on Saturday.

(Crisp) Movie Review: KOI JAANE NA by FENIL SETA

Koi Jaane Na starts off on an intriguing note. The characters are interesting and the mystery factor is well placed before the audiences. Sadly, the film drops in the second half. But the worst is reserved for the last 30 minutes. All logic and sense goes out of the window. Writer-director Amin Hajee does nothing about the loose ends in the script. He introduces certain plot points throughout the film and later does nothing about it. In short, it’s shocking how this film even got approved in the first place. Speaking of performances, both Kunal Kapoor and Amyra Dastur give their best. Ashwini Kalsekar is apt for the role of a strict cop. Achint Kaur and Vidya Malvade are decent but their characters are forgotten after a point. Neha Mahajan is fair and gets to play a nice part. Yet again, her character doesn’t get to do much. Karim Hajee is a bit over the top. Atul Kulkarni has a crucial part and is quite good. Raj Zutshi, Aditya Lakhia, Kamlesh Sawant and Aditi Govitrikar are okay in their special appearances. Lastly, Aamir Khan looks dashing in the song 'Har Funn Maula'. Elli AvrRam compliments him well. All in all, Koi Jaane Na is a senseless film. It’s sure to shock you, not because of the suspense in the end but because of the lack of common sense in the script!

My rating - * ½ out of 5!

APRIL SUDDENLY TURNS DRY; 2 FILMS TO STILL TRY ITS LUCK TOMORROW

Last week, we mentioned that the rising cases of Coronavirus led to the indefinite postponement of the Hindi version of Haathi Mere Saathi. It was scheduled to release on March 26. In the last 8 days, a lot of other films got pushed. Bunty Aur Babli 2, scheduled for April 23 release, has been delayed indefinitely. 2 days back, the makers of Chehre too made it clear that they’d release when the situation would be better. This also became crucial after Maharashtra declared a night curfew, starting as early as 8:00 pm. As a result, the last show in a theatre needs to be held at 5:15 or 5:30 pm.

Interestingly, the last week also saw the release of Godzilla vs. Kong and it did phenomenally well. Our projection went completely wrong – we had predicted a weekend of around Rs. 10 crore. But the film surprisingly opened at a huge Rs. 6.25 crore when it released on Wednesday March 24. It ended up collecting Rs. 32.25 crore in 6 days, including healthy collections on Monday, the day of Holi. These are the best collections for a Hindi and English film since the beginning of a pandemic and ideally, it should have cheered up the trade and industry. However, when one sees the collections minutely, one realizes that a major chunk of the earnings came from the South. The cases in the South are not that high and the cinema business there is more or less normal. An average Hindi film meanwhile does limited business in the South. It relies majorly on West and North to score and these areas were doing poorly since the cases began to increase significantly. The not-so-great performance of Mumbai Saga and Saina also indicated that releasing a Hindi film in this scenario would not be able to fully perform as per its potential.

As of now, now only two major films, Thalaivi on April 23 and Sooryavanshi on April 30, are scheduled for release. However, it is being said that Sooryavanshi is definitely getting postponed as it’s a big film and in such conditions, it’ll prove to be a commercial flop in cinemas.

However, two Hindi films, both small budget ones, will be releasing tomorrow despite the challenges. The first one is Flight. It stars Mohit Chadda, Pavan Malhotra, Zakir Hussain, Viveck Vaswani, Shibani Bedi, Pritam Singh and is directed by Suraj Joshi. The film has an unknown star cast and yet, it has grabbed some eyeballs. This is because it’s trailer is very thrilling. It tells the story of a man trapped in a mid-air flight! Despite the fact that the trailer impressed people, the excitement is obviously minimal. The rising cases will also prove detrimental to an extent. But on the positive side, if it’s a good film, it can grow through positive word of mouth. And it’ll have a long run in cinemas now that hardly any film is releasing.

The other film releasing tomorrow is Koi Jaane Na. It stars Kunal Kapoor and Amyra Dastur and is a suspense saga. It is directed by actor Amin Hajee, of Lagaan fame. The film was shot around 2 years back and is finally seeing the light of the day. This movie features Aamir Khan along with Elli AvrRam in the song ‘Har Funn Maula’. This song has been noticed but many have not been able to realize that it’s a part of the film. Hence, while the song is known, the film is still unknown for most people. Just like Flight, it’ll open to poor houses but might have a chance if public reports are encouraging.

My character writes pulp fiction; Kunal Kapoor surprisingly showed me his books & 80% were pulp fiction-Amin Hajee

BOMBAY TIMES (March 25, 2021)

Kunal Kapoor is all set to return to the big screen with the murder mystery, Koi Jaane Na. The film revolves around a writer, who churns out pulp fiction novels, and features the actor with Amyra Dastur in lead roles. Amin Hajee, who makes his directorial debut with the suspense thriller, feels Kunal is the perfect fit to play the protagonist. Also, the fact that the actor is a huge fan of pulp fiction and an avid reader of the genre, helped him get into the skin of his character with ease.

Speaking about Kunal, Amin shares, “I had narrated him the script four years ago at his home. After the narration, he took me to his room and showed me his books. This story is about a character who writes pulp fiction, so he showed me all his books and out of all the books there, 80 per cent were pulp fiction.”

Amin Hajee says, “Kunal smiled and told me, ‘You know I am your Kabir’ and I said, ‘I know you are.’ I thought he was right for the part because of his physique and other characteristics, but the guy within was also the same person.”

The director shares, “Kunal came up to me with many fabulous ideas. He has not just been my lead actor but also helped me on the creative front.”

Kunal is thrilled with the response to the film’s trailer. Many people from the industry, too, have appreciated it. Hrithik Roshan took to social media and applauded it, saying he ‘loved it’, while Abhishek Bachchan said that the trailer looks ‘killer’ and that he was happy to see Kunal back on screen. Vicky Kaushal, Ali Fazal, Sunny Kaushal and others also praised Kunal and the trailer. Kunal responded saying, “I’m overwhelmed by the response the trailer has received.”

The trailer gives the audience a glimpse of Kunal’s intense performance and look in Koi Jaane Na, along with the chemistry he shares with Amyra, which stands out. Get ready to watch the nail-biting thriller on April 2 at a theatre near you.

Aamir Khan styles himself for his cameo in friend Amin Hajee's film Koi Jaane Na

Aamir Khan, who makes a cameo in director friend Amin Hajee's Koi Jaane Na, styles himself for the dance number

Aamir Khan’s perfectionist streak is legendary in industry circles — if he has given his nod to a project, you can expect him to dive deep into the film’s universe. The unit of Koi Jaane Na got a taste of this when the actor shot for a special dance number. Thrilled to make a cameo in director friend Amin Hajee’s directorial debut, Khan went a step ahead and decided to style himself for the track.

A source close to the actor reveals, “Aamir is known to give his own touch to every project he takes up. When he understood the plot point and the purpose of the song in Koi Jaane Na, he suggested a hipster look. He curated a look that had a casual vibe, complete with lots of accessories. Amin completely trusts the actor’s creative decisions, and instantly approved the look.”

Khan and Hajee have been close friends over the past two decades, having shared screen space in Lagaan (2001) and Mangal Pandey: The Rising (2005). The superstar had halted the shoot of Laal Singh Chaddha in January and winged his way to Jaipur to film the track with Elli AvrRam.

Aamir Khan halts Laal Singh Chaddha schedule to shoot for dance number in Amin Hajee's directorial debut

Uma Ramasubramanian (MID-DAY; January 28, 2021)

Aamir Khan winged his way to Jaipur earlier this week. But you're mistaken if you think the on-screen adventures of Laal Singh Chaddha have taken him to the Pink City. The superstar, who has been relentlessly working on the Advait Chandan-directed venture, has taken a break from the current schedule to film a dance number for long-time friend Amin Hajee's directorial debut, Koi Jaane Na.

"When Amin told Aamir about turning to direction with the psychological thriller, the actor was thrilled. He agreed to make a special appearance in the project, in a heartbeat. Over the next five days, Aamir will be shooting for the song with Elli AvrRam at a Jaipur studio, where a huge set has been created. Composed by Tanishk Bagchi and written by Amitabh Bhattacharya, the number will be choreographed by Bosco and Caesar," reveals a source.

For the uninitiated, Khan and Hajee have been close friends over the past two decades — the latter had slipped into the role of the speech-impaired drummer, Bagha, in Lagaan (2001). Hajee also played Vir Singh in the superstar's 2005 period piece, Mangal Pandey: The Rising. His directorial debut features Kunal Kapoor and Amyra Dastur.

Hajee who is making his directorial debut, played Bagha in the Aamir Khan-Gracy Singh starrer Lagaan and Vir Singh in Mangal Pandey: The Rising. He has written the screenplays for films like Shah Rukh Khan’s Swades and Mimoh Chakraborty’s Haunted-3D.

A source close to the development reveals that the film produced by Mohaan Nadaar is titled Koi Jaane Na and shooting begins towards the end of September. “It will be shot majorly in Scotland in a month-long schedule with some portions in Panchgani later. Kunal plays a writer who doubles up as a vigilante,” informs the source, adding that Kalki’s role is being kept under wraps for the moment and Hajee has been consulting mentor Ashustosh Gowariker about how to go about his directorial debut.

This is the first time Kunal and Kalki are teaming up for a film. Kunal will be seen next in Reema Kagti’s sports drama, Gold, in which he plays a hockey player.

Kalki plays a music producer in Zoya Akhtar’s musical Gully Boy, which also features Ranveer Singh and Alia Bhatt.
