IIFA Awards 2015 was not funny?

DNA (July 7, 2015)

There was a time when the IIFA was meant to be the Indian cinema’s ambassador in the global arena. The annual event was meant to connect Indian cinema (not Bollywood, mind you!) to non-Indian audiences outside India. Amitabh Bachchan was chosen to be the brand ambassador. Fifteen years later, the spark and the will to take Indian cinema abroad is gone, and so is the Big B.

It is just a pricey jamboree. The most showy and tawdry aspects of Bollywood flaunted before fans who think Hrithik Roshan doing Tiger Shroff’s steps is a sign of continuity and renewal in showbiz. This year, the awards touched a new low in credibility with A-lister actors and actresses being squeezed into the Best Actor and Best Actress categories simply because they were there.

Ranveer Singh and Arjun Kapoor as hosts did everything possible to win the crowds. They took swipes at box office-challenged stars and directors in the audience. The duo made fun of one another’s flops. And their own film together, Gunday. Same tired jokes. Blame the poor script, but Kapoor and Singh came across as unqualified to hold an audience’s attention for three hours. Bring back Riteish Deshmukh and Boman Irani.

And yes, even Ranveer’s rumoured relationship with a certain Ms Padukone became fodder for entertainment when Ranveer stared coyly at the alleged lady love while the title song from Karan Johar’s Kuch Kuch Hota Hai played in the background. And then the actors crib about the paparazzi violating their privacy.

Everyone hammed, blowing kisses to the local Malaysian population, speaking in their language as they were instructed to do by the organisers with the possibility of a pay-cut if the stars didn’t do their bit for local tourism (oh, dear!).

The one bright spot was the ‘Outstanding Contribution’ award to Subhash Ghai. That too was marred by some overacting by Ghai’s protégé Anil Kapoor, who screamed his appreciation of his mentor so hard. Jackie Shroff said his quiet thanks to Ghai and slipped away. He forgot. Awards functions are not about subtlety and underplaying. They are all about attention-grabbing gimmicks.

When Ranveer Singh and Arjun Kapoor got comically serious at IIFA 2015

BOMBAY TIMES (July 5, 2015)

They say comedy is serious business, but for the Bollywood ke gun, Ranveer Singh and Arjun Kapoor, it's so effortless that it almost seems like regular banter. Here are some of the wackiest moments from this year's IIFA Awards that air tonight at 8 pm on Colors:

MERE RANVEER-ARJUN AAYENGE:
While the background audio visual had the iconic Bollywood ki maa, Rakhee Gulzar, asserting that her Karan-Arjun will come, from behind the veil emerged a shocking Rakhi Sawant flashing her booty along with Arjun and Ranveer. The boys said, “A big thanks to Rakhi Sawant jinhone iss special appearance ke saath hamare performance ko chaar chand laga diye. We love you Rakhi...agle saal, please tie us rakhi.“

UNAPOLOGETICALLY APOLOGETIC:
While the nation is still coming to terms with the alternate meaning of roast, the tender-hearted anchors apologised to all actors, politicians and citizens who have been hurt by their deeds and actions in...not roast but Gunday!

USKI AATI NAHI AUR MERI JAATI NAHI:
This was Arjun Kapoor's dig at Tiger Shroff on their body and facial hair.

CHAI-TIME:
Sonu Sood's abs were in focus too, as Ranveer and Arjun stripped his shirt and said, “Bhaiyyaji, smile please. In biscoot ke liye koi chai lao please.“

PREM PUJARI:
And here's how Ranveer wooed Deepika Padukone...

Ranveer: Main Bhagwan se dua karta hoon ki tum ho meri har film ki heroine.
Arjun: Kyunki tumhare bina iski film nahi chal paayegi do din.
Ranveer: Deepika aap chaliye, yahaan ho raha hai tuchha kaam. Arjun ki baaton mein aa kar main bhi ho raha hoon badnaam. Aage badhte hain, badi rangeen hai yeh shaam, Ram chahe Leela, Leela chahe Ram!

PK, VK... OK:
Ranveer: Last year Anushka Sharma was in PK. These days you see her with VK.
Arjun: Bhai, be careful.
Ranveer: Oh. Sorry, just kidding about VK. JK. OK. Arre woh dekh Kay Kay .

THE TRADEMARK A & R PJs:

Jab Ayushmann Khurrana buddha ho jaayega toh use kya bulaayenge?
Ayushmann Purana

Agar Arjun-Alia dinner ke liye jaayein, what will that movie be called?
2 Plates

And these hilarious moments apart, the IIFA Awards will also bring together a volley of stars walking on the Green Carpet starting 7 pm on Colors, followed by performances which will add to the merriment. The event witnessed a first-of-its-kind Dubsmash performance by Sonakshi Sinha, as she paid tribute to some of Bollywood's most-loved faces, including Amitabh Bachchan and Salman Khan. There were some cool acts too -Anushka Sharma's glam burlesque performance on a swing, Hrithik Roshan's technology-heavy dance playing with digital imaging and 3D mapping, Shahid's dramatic Broadway act and Parineeti Chopra's rockstar avatar. The highlight of the evening was when ace director Subhash Ghai was presented with the Lifetime Achievement Award by Anil Kapoor and Jackie Shroff. The duo recreated their legendary Ram Lakhan moments on stage shortly after Shraddha Kapoor's performance paying tribute to some of the director's most inspirational films.

Enlarge ImageParineeti Chopra, in a sexy new avatar at the IIFA, it seems wasn’t too thrilled that the organisers approached Sonakshi Sinha for a singing gig.

A source reveals that Pari, who happens to be a trained classical singer, expected them to approach her for the musical segment, but that didn’t happen. Instead, the act went to Sona, who surprised everyone with her rendition of Sawaar Loon from Lootera along with other numbers.

A source revealed, “Pari felt that she could have done a good job on stage with the mic too. On seeing the Sinha girl perform to the Lootera song, she was literally fuming.”

Meanwhile, Sonakshi won a lot of praise for her singing act at the event. Many are now hoping the Akira actress will turn to playback like Shraddha Kapoor and Alia Bhatt.

We contacted Parineeti’s spokesperson to find out if she was indeed upset with Sonakshi’s act and the response was, “Not at all!”

It is okay to run down anyone for a few laughs in this industry-Rishi Kapoor

Ajun Kapoor and Ranveer Singh let loose a few stingers Ranbir Kapoor’s way over his recent flops — Roy and Bombay Velvet at the IIFA awards.

RK’s dad, Rishi retorts, “It’s all right, yaar. It is okay to run down anyone for a few laughs in this industry. Ranbir is going through that phase in his career when he is facing flak for his choice of films, and rightly so. He has made some mistakes. He will emerge a stronger, wiser and more learned actor after his suicidal career decisions.”

He adds, “All actors go through lean phases. It’s part and parcel of growing as an actor.” Rishi has become more forgiving. In the past, he has ripped Deepika and Sonam for taking off on Ranbir on Koffee With Karan.

Hrithik Roshan partied hard with Ranveer Singh, Deepika Padukone at IIFA Kuala Lumpur?

Meena Iyer (BOMBAY TIMES; June 10, 2015)

The most happening event at the start of this week was Hrithik Roshan's party at a foreign destination (IIFA Awards 2015). The light-eyed superstar is said to have thrown the mother of all parties. Joining him were ex-lovers Arjun Kapoor and Sonakshi Sinha, present 'good friends' Deepika Padukone and Ranveer Singh, a couple of stag entries, Ayushmann Khurrana and Vivek Oberoi, among many others.

Like at all parties, the drinks flowed, the spirits soared and there was also a lot of singing and dancing. Sonakshi sang away with the host till the wee hours of the morning. After breakfast was served around 10 am the next day, the guests slowly dispersed. “Actually we were having such a blast that we didn't feel like breaking up the party,“ confessed a guest.

The ones who couldn't make it were Tiger Shroff and Shraddha Kapoor because they had early morning flights to catch.

And others who couldn't make it were heard lamenting that they had indeed missed Hrithik's bonhomie.

Tiger Shroff dances with his idol Hrithik Roshan at IIFA Awards 2015

Subhash K Jha (DNA; June 10, 2015)

That Tiger Shroff is a fan of Hrithik Roshan is not a secret. The junior actor looks up to Hrithik and models everything from his physique to dancing on the superstar. It was therefore a pleasure beyond measure for Tiger to treasure, when he got to dance with his idol at the IIFA in Kuala Lampur this weekend. “Not only did I get my best debutant award for Heropanti from my idol, he also danced with me to the tune of my song — Whistle Baja. It was a golden moment for me,” says Tiger who confesses he admires every aspect of Hrithik’s personality. Tiger’s contemporary Arjun Kapoor who similarly idolises Salman Khan got to shake a leg in Tevar to a song dedicated to his idol. Tiger hopes to get a similar opportunity soon.

Rajiv Kapoor was in high spirits while travelling from Malaysia to Mumbai?

If the latest buzz is to be believed, Rajiv Kapoor, who attended the recent IIFA Awards in Malaysia, allegedly created a scene on his return flight to India. Sources say the yesteryear actor, popularly known as Chimpu, began drinking uncontrollably soon after he settled in his business class seat.

Says an eyewitness, “The crew had a tough time handling him as he was sozzled and made it uncomfortable for other passengers. They had to ask his assistant seated in the economy class to check on him at regular intervals and keep him calm.”

Apparently, Chimpu was so drunk that he could barely stand while alighting at the Mumbai airport. “The crew had to again request his assistant to help him get out of the flight,” adds the source.

The show was not over for Kapoor yet for once in the airport lobby, he started hurling Hindi abuses randomly, claim sources.

Kapoor couldn’t be reached for a comment.

Why AIB turned down Ranveer Singh-Arjun Kapoor’s IIFA offer?

Rashma Shetty Bali (DNA; May 11, 2015)

That Ranveer Singh and Arjun Kapoor will host the International Indian Film Academy Awards (IIFA) this year, is known. It’s also common knowledge, by now, that comedy collective East India Comedy (EIC) are scripting their lines and gags. What isn’t, is that they weren’t the first choice. The equally controversial All India Bakchod (AIB) was the original choice as writers for the new hosts.

A source close to the actors told us, “EIC has been with IIFA for long, but Ranveer specifically wanted the AIB team to put their act on IIFA together.” So, what went wrong? The backlash to the Comedy Roast spooked the organisers? Well, it seems that the reasons are very different. The source further added, “AIB was approached, but they had other film assignments in hand and hence turned down the offer.” That must have been a dampener, considering that the last time the actors came together with the AIB team, they not only tickled our funny bone, but also showed off some crackling chemistry.

Ranveer’s spokesperson denies that the actor suggested AIB for scripting, “AIB was amongst others who were considered by Wizcraft for scripting the show. Ranveer had nothing to do with this. AIB was busy and couldn’t take it up, but EIC is now writing for the show.”

Tanmay Bhat of AIB said, “Wizcraft approached us first. Shortly after, Ranveer did, wanting us to script for IIFA. We told him we already had our hands full — we’re in Singapore for our shows. Since we had worked with them earlier and had had a blast, we didn’t want to do it halfheartedly."

Ranveer Singh and Arjun Kapoor to host IIFA 2015?

Reshma Shetty Bali (DNA; April 16, 2015)

The last time we saw the Gunday actors together on a stage was at the AIB Knockout – The Roast. Now they will soon be seen together on another stage, but this time it will be a lot less controversial. Ranveer Singh and Arjun Kapoor will co-host the International Indian Film Academy (IIFA) Awards 2015 in Malayasia. This is the first time they will jointly host a filmi award. Last year we saw Shahid Kapoor and Farhan Akhtar host a show together. However, IIFA’s best so far has been Boman Irani and Riteish Deshmukh and of course the inimitable Shah Rukh Khan. Ranveer and Arjun coming together might just make it to the list of our other favourites as they share super camaraderie and that is always a plus. Will this energetic duo finally become a replacement for the famous SRK and Saif Ali Khan team at award functions? Let’s wait and watch!
