Bollywood has a low divorce rate, despite all the stories of promiscuity

Despite all the stories of promiscuity; the innumerable romances and the fly-by-night affairs, Bollywood doesn't necessarily subscribe to the 'D' word
Meena Iyer (BOMBAY TIMES; November 3, 2014)
Raj Kapoor was enamoured with Nargis, and Dev Anand was infatuated with Zeenat Aman; enough to make it seem like both these evergreen superstars would end their marriages. However, when it came to the crunch, neither did.
Marks must be given to their spouses Krishna Kapoor and Kalpana Kartik (Mona Anand) for maintaining the home and hearth of these men whose high-profile link-ups did rock the boat to a degree. But in the end, it was the 'sanctity' of marriage that won.
In fact, Dimple stayed put by her terminally-ill husband's side in the last phase of his life; and Gulzar sahab and Raakhee bond frequently over fish curry even today. They are both crazy about daughter Meghna and their grandson Samay. Their own marriage certificate may have gathered dust; but their friendship can still warm the cockles of your heart.
It can be rightly said that just like in our mainstream cinema, most inhabitants of Bollywood too subscribe to the “we-wish-to-stay-with-one-another till death do us part.“ Unless the compulsions of a second marriage beckon, superstars in incompatible situations would rather let their relationships stay dormant than seek the divorce route.
And if the latest from insiders is to be believed; Hrithik and Sussanne will always remain civil for the sake of their children around whom their world revolves.

Family court grants divorce to Hrithik Roshan, Sussanne

After a year of separation, Hrithik, Sussanne granted divorce in a 15-minute final hearing on Saturday
Sharmeen Hakim Indorewala (MUMBAI MIRROR; November 2, 2014)
A sombre-looking Hrithik Roshan, dressed in a black T-shirt and right arm in a matching sling, followed his ex-wife Sussanne Khan out of the Bandra family court around 11 am on Saturday. Outside, photographers and TV cameramen jostled for space to capture the final moments of one of the most talkedabout separations in Bollywood.
A relaxed Sussanne
While Hrithik, on a professional high after the success of his movie Bang Bang, hid his emotions behind black aviators, Sussanne, dressed in an elegant white T-shirt and blue denims, looked extremely relaxed. She didn't avoid the cameras, though the security ring around Hrithik and Sussanne ensured the press was not able to get too close.
The actor and his ex-wife arrived at the court separately, and their respectively lawyers informed that they had arrived at an out-of-court settlement.
The divorce was finalised in the chambers of Principal Judge Laxmi Rao, and took all of 15 minutes to end a 14-year-long marriage. Hrithik and Sussanne -- the daughter of yesteryear actor Sanjay Khan -- got married in 2000, after a four-year courtship. They have two sons, Hrehaan and Hridhaan, and Hirthik's lawyer said the kids' custody will be joint.
Joint custody
"They have joint custody. Whenever and whoever wants to be with the kids, can be with them," Hrithik's lawyer Dipesh Mehta said.
In a mutual consent plea, there is asix-month cooling off period at the end of which if neither side withdraws their consent, the court on finding that there was no coercion or collusion and existence of a genuine marital breakdown then grants a divorce.
No alimony, says lawyer
A few months ago, there were reports of Sussanne demanding Rs 400 crore in alimony, which Hrithik had termed as malicious. "No settlement amount has been specified in court records. In fact, there are no legal documents even outside court, such as memorandum of understanding. In this case, the alimony is based on trust, mutual convenience and requirement," Mehta said.
Mutual consent
The couple had approached the court in February, and filed an application for separation by mutual consent. On December 14 last year, the couple, one of the most popular Bollywood personalities, had called off their marriage.
In a statement, the 40-year-old superstar had said Sussanne decided to walk out of their marriage. His statement read: "This is my greatest tribute to love. Sussanne is, and always will be, the love of my life for the rest of my life. If her smiles are brighter without me, my love for her must accomplish that."
In her statement, Sussanne had said that the separation was their "own individual choices". Her statement read: "We are two individuals who respect and care for each other and have made our own individual choices. We are parents to two wonderful kids and our responsibility remains to protect and take care of them. Nothing can change that."

A family court in BKC granted divorce to actor Hrithik Roshan and his wife Sussanne on Saturday .The mutual consent divorce ended their marriage of over 13 years.
The two arrived in separate vehicles at 10.30am, he in his white Mercedes (S class), she in her white Range Rover. Within 20 minutes, they left that way too. Hrithik walked Sussanne to her vehicle. Their two minor children, both boys, will live with their mother, but both parents have joint custody. The actor had finally decided to end the marriage with his interior designer wife on an amicable note and both filed for a mutual consent divorce in April.
The common lawyers for both, Mrunalini Deshmukh and Dipesh Mehta were in tow, when the two entered the court premises on Saturday. They presented themselves before principal family court judge Laxmi Rao who asked whether there was any change of mind. Both said that there wasn't. Satisfied that the joint plea for divorce was genuine and voluntary, without any coercion or collusion, the judge pronounced them divorced.
The settlement between the two was not detailed in the court papers. Sussanne, will continue to reside in the rented Versova residence with the kids, aged five and seven years. Both parents will have a say in their upbringing. Hrithik plans to take them on a holiday abroad as soon as he recovers from a ligament injury. Deshmukh and Mehta remained tight-lipped about settlement details.
The actor has agreed to look after his children's daily needs and also their luxuries. He lives in Juhu but will continue to maintain the Versova home where they reside with Sussanne, who herself hails from a film clan.
The couple knew each other for over 17 years. Last December, the two had released public statements that they were headed for a split, that it was no longer 'Kaho Naa...Pyaar Hai'. Almost a year later, as their divorce on the basis of irretrievable differences, was allowed, one more Bollywood marriage bit the dust.
Hrithik Roshan to ask for another date for his divorce hearing?

Bharati Dubey (MID-DAY; October 30, 2014)
The actor’s divorce was expected to come through on by the end of this month with the hearing date scheduled for October 31. However, Hrithik Roshan may not be available on that day.
Says his lawyer, Dipesh Mehta, “We may not be able to present ourselves in the court as it is not convenient to us. We will be asking for another date for the hearing.” The exact reason for the decision is yet to be ascertained.
It appears that both Hrithik and Sussanne Khan have to resolve some personal issues before legally separating. Not very long ago, there was a buzz that Sussanne had demanded Rs 400 crore as alimony, which was denied by the actor. Then, the duo filed a combined petition stating that irreconcilable temperamental differences had made it impossible for them to live together.
Sussanne moved out of the Roshan household in January this year. In April, the two decided to dissolve their marriage by mutual consent and agreed on an out-of-court settlement with regard to the alimony, residence and permanent maintenance of Sussanne and their two sons to their mutual satisfaction. Primary custody of their kids remains with his estranged wife.
Hrithik was not available for comment.

Sussanne Roshan and Mehr Jesia set the record straight

Priya Gupta (BOMBAY TIMES; August 15, 2014)
Sussanne and Mehr may have
got introduced to each other through their respective husbands ten years
back, but eventually, it was they who became best friends. Today, while
Sussanne has separated from her husband and has filed for divorce, she
continues to consider Mehr, Arjun and their two daughters family, and
very much hangs out with them many a times, be it at their house or
going out for dinners or friends’ parties together. After it became
known that Sussanne and Hrithik had separated, there was a lot written
about in the media about the relationship of Sussanne and Arjun, making
many convenient assumptions. While Sussanne and Mehr maintained an
elegant silence so far, they now choose to set the record straight for
the sake of their children. Before we bring you this conversation with
the two ladies, may I also place on record that after meeting Hrithik
and Sussanne independently, I can only say one thing, that both are
beautiful people who are still sensitive to each other, still share a
wonderful bond and above all, are responsible and caring parents who
understand their responsibilities. Excerpts:
Mehr, how did you feel when there were stories linking your husband to one of your best friends, Sussanne?
About four months before the first article came out, Sussanne and me had started hearing stories. A year even before that, I have friends in South Mumbai who were linking Hrithik and me up. As soon as I came to know about that, I told Sussanne about it. That is how open our friendship has been. When we saw the first article in August 2013, we thought that it will pass on. In March 2014, Arjun and I were celebrating our anniversary. What was reported was how Arjun had forgotten Mehr and how Sussanne and Arjun are partying and how Mehr came with Chunky and Bhavna and then left with another friend. Sussanne and Hrithik had formally separated by this time. The reality was that I was not just there at the party, but this party was thrown by Arjun and me for our anniversary. Then Sussanne filed for divorce. Arjun and I went for a friend's birthday party, where Sussanne also met us. While leaving, Sussanne and I were there in the same car whereas Arjun went in another car. The media reported how Arjun and Sussanne were celebrating, implying that they were celebrating their divorce which was completely untrue. In reality, I was in the same car as Sussanne, which they had conveniently cut off.
Sussanne: My relationship with Hrithik will always be what it is. We have a good bond as parents first and that is our priority. And we will always remain close. Mehr and Arjun are like family to me and we have this beautiful relationship and are so close. They have been with me through thick and thin and it hurts me that every time I have a dinner or an outing with them, it is made out to be an ugly story, and it's concocted and changed around to suit some nasty person to make us look like undignified, irresponsible and horrible people. We kept saying to ourselves, we know what we are, let it go, but it kept going on and on and on.
Then the fabricated stories alleging that I was a golddigger, asking for Rs 400 crore alimony came out and we thought it's not the right time to talk. Then we went to our friend Gattu's (Abhishek Kapoor's) birthday that was a casual party in his office. Again there was a made-up story claiming how Mehr left the party alone crying.
Mehr: We were at Gattu's birthday party when it was raining and in the middle of the party, I got my periods. When we had come in, there was no media. I went down and was looking down calling for my driver, and saw that by this time, the entire press was there. I was already feeling really embarrassed about my situation. Seeing the media, I called Arjun, telling him that I am sure media will make up a story seeing me going alone. Till date, Arjun and I have never ever entered or left a party separately. I had planned to go home, settle myself and come back. As expected, the story was concocted to suit the writer the next day.
Sussanne: It's just so irresponsible press. As two adults and two responsible mothers, and anybody can vouch for the mothers we are, what makes us angry is how irresponsible press can get away with attacking two people, who have no agenda whatsoever but to lead a proper dignified life. That is why we decided to not get bullied any more and talk about it.
How did you become friends?
Mehr: We have always been thick friends for years. We became friends in 2004 when Arjun was on a world tour with Hrithik. Both Sussanne and me were travelling with them. Sussanne and me became friends. We also had a lot of common friends. Once it was known that Sussanne was leaving Hrithik, media was finding scapegoats. It was Arjun's decision that come what may, we will not speak. He maintained that, 'It's our friends who have taken that decision and we will just take a step back on this.'
Sussanne: In a relationship like you very well know what a husband and wife have, and till today if I have the bond that I have with Hrithik, why does the world want to make a scapegoat out of my people, trying to demean me and her trying to make us look like disgraceful people. There is a section of people who are enjoying this and discussing why do they always hang out together, why do they stick together. I think the reason we both decided that no we cannot let this go on is because of our children. They are old now, her daughter is 12 and in Class VII, my son is also in Class III. You don't want their friends and their mothers to start thinking rubbish about you. My agenda and her agenda has always been kids first.
Mehr: When the first article came out, Arjun and I read it in the morning and sat down both the kids. We know how school is and how they will talk about a conversation in school. We told them that you are going to school today. Hridhaan and Hrehaan are even smaller than you. You have to look after them that much more in school. They all go to the same school. They see that Sussanne and we are always together, so they did not have a problem understanding.
Sussanne: We have to be hawks to protect them to set the record straight with dignity and decided that we need to talk about this. We need to make people understand that you cannot bully people and cannot demean people's character and get away with it. We have young children and I am a working mother and don't want people I work with to think of me in a bad light. Mehr has a sweet family, who has been so supportive of our friendship, despite so much being written about us. Is there an agenda? Why are we being victimised?
Could the reason be that Mehr and Arjun are not friends with Hrithik anymore?
Mehr: Hrithik is a complete workaholic. He will work so hard on one movie that his whole year has gone.
But we have gone to Bali, America and London and taken many family holidays together. I may not speak to a friend for 10 years, but he or she can call me any time of the day and I don't have to prove myself to any of my friends. Sussanne is my sister and knows more about me than Arjun or my mom knows. We are very close. She is my closest friend from the industry. Sussanne and me have even done holidays together without our husbands and children.
Sussanne: We have shared a lot of good times. I too have my two old friends from school, but Mehr is one of my closest friends.
Did it stress you both?
Sussanne: I was very upset. They have been my support system, taking all that flak for me and I felt it was just not correct. I was on Twitter, but it has a dirty energy with faceless cowards, who sit behind the computer and decide what they want to say. If you want to say what you think, come on Facebook and say what you have to. I feel it is 2014, we are modern mothers and we are not going to sit back and let people bully us, be it some section of the press or some crazy obsessive fans, who think that I have done something wrong. We will not allow people to put us down.
Mehr: My husband has been in this industry for 11 years and nothing like this has ever been written about him and then these stories about your husband and your best friend come out. This is the only time that someone has spoken against him, but we took this call that for the sake of Hrithik and Sussanne, we will step back. But now, we are seemingly being made out to be the couple that are selfish and insensitive to our friends and their families. It hurts to now be even called a love triangle. I enter a room and can feel the 'poor Mehr' kind of energy. I am not trying to say that I am a good soul or anything, but I can't take all this after being a responsible daughter myself. I am going to be 46 this year. I want to go out to a party and give out good energy. I want to see the smile back on the face of my parents. My kids see Sussanne all the time in the house and know that there is no truth in all of this. But I want my parents and their friends to feel fine with us. My parents are simple people living their own lives in this Parsi colony in Dadar and they love Sussanne. But my dad tells me, 'Mehr, this is just not ending.' Any parent would feel sad if their kid is being talked about like this in the press.
Sussanne: What makes us give out that energy? Just that we are happy-go-lucky people, who are not manipulative. Are we being victimised just because we are clean-hearted people? People writing about us need to ask their own conscience if they are doing the right thing by attacking us. I have learnt it the hard way who are my friends and who are not. People in the industry are very cliquish and can decide how it all translates into gossip. Whatever it is, Hrithik and I have decided that we are responsible parents and are together in that and no matter what, nobody can attack us in that. We will always be strong. We will not agree with ugly thoughts. It is obvious that some people are trying to demean me, Arjun and Mehr, making us look like disgraceful people and I know more than anybody else that it is not Hrithik. They don't even spare him. We have reached a point that we just want to clear the air. Mehr's family and my family have been a rock to me and it affects me when they get affected. I don't want that. We are responsible people and it's important for us to set the record straight. We will not be bullied anymore. They have attacked Arjun and Mehr's night club, said that I could be closing Charcoal, that I am even having an affair with a businessman in Dubai. How many things will they say to make us look bad? What should we do? Should we just get scared of media? It's time we clarified and we chose Bombay Times to say what we have to, as we know that it's a responsible publication.

Hrithik Roshan upset with 400 cr alimony rumours

Rumours of Sussanne Khan demanding Rs 400 crore as alimony from Hrithik Roshan spread like wildfire on the social media. The topic trended in no time and some were prompt enough to even crack jokes on Sussanne's alleged demand. While these reports were rubbished by sources close to the couple, who separated last December, Hrithik himself used a social networking platform to say, “Fabricated news articles. Demeaning my loved ones. Testing my patience." Sussanne hasn't commented yet.

Bharati Dubey (MID-DAY; August 1, 2014)
Hrithik Roshan and Sussanne Khan’s lawyers have denied recent news reports saying that the latter has demanded a whopping Rs 400 crore as alimony. Advocate Dipesh Mehta, who filed the divorce petition for the couple, says, “It is unfortunate that false and baseless reports are being circulated in the media. Having acted as their common lawyer, I can tell you that they are two mature people and responsible parents. The financial matters between them are their personal issues and people should give them their privacy and peace.’’ Mrunalini Deshmukh, Sussanne’s lawyer, too said that the Rs 400 crore alimony report was just a rumour.
It may be pointed out that Hrithik and Sussanne have cited irreconcilable differences as the reason behind their split. Sussanne has been living separately since January last year. In April this year, the two decided to dissolve their marriage by mutual consent. It is being said that the two have agreed on an out of court settlement.
While the primary custody of the children will remain with Sussanne, the consent terms in the divorce petition apparently say the couple shall not have any right whatsoever on each other’s properties and assets.
Hrithik-Sussanne file for divorce; work out a ‘whopping’ settlement; next hearing on Oct 31

MUMBAI MIRROR (May 1, 2014)
On December 14, 2013, Hrithik Roshan and Sussanne Khan announced the end of their 13-year marriage. Around 10 am yesterday, the couple arrived at the Bombay Family Court in Bandra in separate cars, accompanied by their respective advocates, Dipesh Mehta and Mrunalini Deshmukh, and filed for divorce by mutual consent.
A senior official at the court (name withheld on request) told Mirror, “The paperwork was done before the general public started trickling in. The divorce should come through in six months. Since it is by mutual consent, no hiccups are expected.”
While Deshmukh remained unavailable for comment, Mehta revealed that the next hearing will be on October 31, when the couple will be asked to confirm their decision. “If they don’t change their minds by then, the divorce will be granted on the same day,” she said.
Hrithik and Sussanne had been together for 17 years and have two sons, Hridhaan and Hrehaan. Since the separation, the children have been living with their mother at her flat in Versova. According to Mehta, Sussanne will have custody of the kids. The lawyer, however, refused to disclose how much alimony she has been granted, saying, “That’s strictly confidential.”
The buzz is that Hrithik tried his best to reconcile but Sussanne was adamant that they go their separate ways. If she’d had her way, she would have filed for divorce three months ago, when she had told Hrithik they should be “just cordial” with each other. Hrithik made one last-ditch attempt when he turned up for Hrehaan’s birthday at her Versova home earlier this month, but she showed little interest in reconciliation.
Hrithik, however, refused to give in, and his car was often seen parked outside Sussanne’s father Sanjay Khan's home, where he met her sisters Farah Khan Ali and Simone Arora and discussed the possibility of a patch-up. The decision to file for divorce was taken just a few days before the actor left for Florida to attend an award function last week.
Hrithik and Sussanne were once Bollywood’s picture-perfect couple. In 2011, when newspapers were abuzz about Hrithik’s alleged closeness with with his Kites costar Barbara Mori, his wife, in an exclusive interview to this newspaper, said, “there is nothing wrong in our marriage”.
But according to sources close to the couple, that was the beginning of the end. The final nail was Sussanne’s alleged friendship with a model-turned-actor. Insiders privy to details of the marriage say that Sussanne’s relationship with Hrithik’s parents, Rakesh and Pinky Roshan, had also been troubled for very long, and she had long wanted to move out of the family home—Palazzio at Juhu Scheme. However, Hrithik was not keen to leave his parents and sister Sunaina. When he eventually zeroed in on a flat, on the same property as Akshay Kumar, it was too late. Sussanne had walked out not only from Palazzio but also his life, four months before Krrish 3 hit theatres. Rakesh Roshan has been telling acquaintances that he was shocked when his daughter-in-law knocked on his door and announced that she was leaving. He has also been saying that Hrithik pays the rent for Sussanne’s Versova apartment, and claiming that a certain common friend caused fissures in the marriage. Sussanne’s father Sanjay Khan, when contacted, said, “I am sorry. I cannot comment on this matter.” However, Chunky Pandey, a friend of the couple, said, “I am shocked beyond words. They looked so cute together. I expected them to reconcile. In fact, I still do.” Hrithik and Sussanne remained unavailable for comment.
WHAT HRITHIK DID ON TUESDAY NIGHT:
The actor danced the night away at the birthday party of Sanjay Kapoor’s wife, Maheep. The bash was also attended by Gauri Khan, Karan Johar, Karisma Kapoor, Arjun Kapoor, Seema Khan, Kanika ‘Baby Doll’ Kapoor, Anna Singh, Chunky Pandey and his wife Bhavna, and many others. On the other hand, Sussanne, who is Maheep’s close friend and business partner, chose to stay home with Hridhaan and Hrehaan.

Hrithik Roshan flew down from Florida to Mumbai late on Monday night. On Wednesday morning at around 10.30am, he and wife Sussanne Khan came to the Bandra family court where they filed for divorce. The couple, whose companionship spans a period of 17 years, was married for 10 years, and they recently (December 2013) went their separate ways. It has emerged that another hearing has been scheduled for six months from now.
When contacted, lawyer Dipesh Mehta divulged a few details. He said, “I am representing both Hrithik and Sussanne; they have filed for divorce by mutual consent. The counsellor has submitted the report and the next hearing will take place on October 31. The custody of their kids, Hrehaan and Hridaan, has been awarded to Sussanne.”
With the couple filing for divorce, rumours about their getting back together have been put to rest. Says a source close to the couple, “As their friends, we support their decision, but we had hoped that things would end differently. The kids will now be with Sussanne and Hrithik did not object to this. In fact, no allegations have been made by either party. The divorce is expected to come through by October end.”
