Except Sooryavanshi, all holiday releases post pandemic fail to work at the box office

The holiday releases have seen disaster results though it was off to a great start with SOORYAVANSHI last Diwali. Since SOORYAVANSHI, there have been five major holidays with four this year and one last year. Last year there was 83 on Christmas, which failed badly.
Then on Republic Day, there were no releases while Eid in April proved a total disaster with HEROPANTI 2 and RUNWAY 34 as both films took in just 58 crore nett combined. On the Raksha Bandhan/Independence Day, the industry probably saw its lowest point of all time as LAAL SINGH CHADDHA and RAKSHA BANDHAN took in just 105 crore nett combined with multiple holidays and on top LAAL SINGH CHADDHA was an event film.
Now Diwali is not much better as both RAM SETU and THANK GOD will hit 110 crore nett between them and that is best case scenario as final totals could be under 110 crore nett. The Diwali performance is not as bad as Independence Day as neither RAM SETU or THANK GOD were event films like LAAL SINGH CHADDHA.
There have been four event films post the pandemic and they are SOORYAVANSHI, '83, LAAL SINGH CHADDHA and BRAHMASTRA; two have worked while the other two tanked. BRAHMASTRA missed a holiday period; so, if it had worked out for this film and it got a Diwali or Raksha Bandhan/Independence Day, it could have done 15-20% more even with a clash.

Tiger says dismal performance of Heropanti 2 was 'heartbreaking' as he focuses on his next, Ganapath

High-octane action stunts, a few dance numbers that display his smooth moves and over-the-top dialogues — in many ways, Heropanti 2 was your classic Tiger Shroff fare, designed to appeal to his fans. The actor had high expectations from the Ahmed Khan-directed offering as it marked his return to the big screen after two years since Baaghi 3 (2020). Unfortunately, the April 29 release could not make a mark at the box office.
Shroff admits that the actioner’s failure hit him hard. “It’s definitely heartbreaking because I am attached to all my movies. It takes a toll on me if my film doesn’t work,” he says.
However, the actor has picked himself up after the underwhelming response to the Nawazuddin Siddiqui and Tara Sutaria-starrer. He is now focusing on Ganapath that reunites him with his first co-star Kriti Sanon, after which he will move on to Bade Miyan Chote Miyan with Akshay Kumar. The key to bouncing back, he says, is by working harder. “I believe in immersing myself in work as the show must go on,” he smiles.

The Internet can be an amusing place, where you can never tell what catches netizens’ fancy. Over the past few days, social media has been abuzz with memes about “Chhoti bachchi ho kya?” The dialogue was originally used in Tiger Shroff’s debut film Heropanti (2014), but the good folks of the Internet have rediscovered it eight years on and are having a field day with it.
The actor, whose Heropanti 2 hit the screens last week, is surprised that the dialogue has inspired a meme fest. “I am happy that it resurfaced at a time like this because it gave another dimension to the [film’s] promotions. Honestly, I don’t know why people are going crazy over that line. It’s a dialogue I tell Kriti [Sanon’s character] in the film,” says the actor.
While Shroff uses the line to admonish Sanon in the scene, social media users and reputed brands are giving their own spin to it. Food delivery giant Zomato chipped in with a witty one-liner, as it posted on Twitter, “Har trend pe tweet expect karte ho, chhote bachche ho kya?”
Dating app Tinder was not one to be left behind, tweeting, “Chhoti bachchi ho kya — me @ myself when I simp on them.”
Some of the posts have left Shroff chuckling. He adds, “I guess because of the way I said it, people have been catching on to it. You never know what clicks with the audience.”

As is the norm with Bollywood’s action fares, Heropanti 2 is centred on leading man Tiger Shroff and his stunts. However, Tara Sutaria, who plays Shroff’s love interest in the movie, insists her character Inaaya isn’t “the typical bubbly girl” that one sees in such offerings.
She elaborates, “This is Ahmed’s [Khan, director] first film where the girl has more [dialogues] than Tiger. Inaaya has an opinion on everything, speaks fast and is quite loud. Sometimes, she might be irritating, but we have tried to make her endearing. Towards the end of the film, you will understand why Inaaya is like that.”
Only three films old in the industry, Sutaria says she enjoys masala potboilers like Heropanti 2. “This is a massy film. You don’t need months of prep for such movies. I enjoy doing such fun films. Inaaya is different from the real me; the only similarity is that we both are strong women.”
Her latest release reunites her with her first co-star after Student Of The Year 2 (2019). “Tiger hasn’t changed as a person at all. I consider my co-actors my friends, whether we are approaching a scene together or when doing promotions.”

Heropanti 2 could have been a fun action entertainer like Tiger Shroff’s earlier films. Sadly, this one is riddled with a poor storyline. Ahmed Khan’s direction further spoils the show. The back and forth narrative gets too much after a point and moreover, logic takes a backseat and how. There are clear continuity issues too. The climax is intended to be unique and nail-biting. However, it comes across as unexciting and insipid. Tiger Shroff’s performance is sincere and he makes the film bearable. His action, as always, is top-class. Nawazuddin Siddiqui is strictly okay. Tara Sutaria goes overboard. Amrita Singh is average and her track is unconvincing. Uday Mahesh, last seen as Chellam Sir in The Family Man 2, fails to impress this time. Songs are poor. The Sufi track however will work individually, though it gives a déjà vu of ‘Kun Faya Kun’. All in all, avoid Heropanti 2 at all costs.

WILL THE EID RELEASES MANAGE TO WORK AT THE BOX OFFICE?
Since 2009, Salman Khan is known to release his films famously on Eid. Except for 2013 and 2020, there was no Salman release on the festival and this year, too, the superstar’s films couldn’t make it due to pandemic-related delays. As a result, Ajay Devgn and Tiger Shroff have taken up the coveted spot. Their films look interesting and can work though both films will also face their share of challenges.
Heropanti 2, starring Tiger Shroff, is the sequel to his debut film Heropanti, though the stories are not connected. Tara Sutaria is paired opposite him while Nawazuddin Siddiqui plays the antagonist. The film looks like a slick action entertainer. Tiger has a huge fan base, especially in the mass belts. As a result, a section of the audience is sure to watch the film in theatres. Moreover, the way his Heropanti dialogue ‘Choti bachi ho kya’ has gone viral and the way Tiger Shroff has taken it sportingly aided the promotions.
However, the first trailer was universally panned. The makers released a second trailer last week, which was much better. However, the damage has been done. Hence, though Tiger Shroff’s fans would flock to see the film, the others might adopt a wait-and-watch policy. Music, by A R Rahman, hasn’t worked. A film like this ought to have one chartbuster at least. Due to these factors, the film’s opening won’t be extraordinary. Heropanti 2 is expected to open at around Rs. 10 crore.
The other release of the week is Runway 34. It stars Ajay Devgn as the lead actor and director. Amitabh Bachchan, Rakul Preet Singh, Boman Irani and Angira Dhar also feature in this film which is an aviation thriller which is based on true events. The story is intriguing. The aircraft scenes should be thrilling and then there’s also the courtroom drama element. All these factors can make for a great watch. Moreover, Ajay Devgn and Amitabh Bachchan coming together is nothing short of a treat.
On the flipside, though the plot is exciting, the first trailer got thumbs down. Many viewers couldn’t understand what the film was all about. This film, too, had a second trailer and it was better than the first but still, it was just okay. Moreover, it doesn’t look like a film for Eid. One wants to see happy and entertaining films on festivals. Runway 34 doesn’t fit the bill. Also, the theme and treatment are such that it has no chance to work in single screens. As a result, its opening will be in the range of Rs. 3.50-5 crore.
Both films will also face competition from KGF - Chapter 2. It was released two weeks back and is still going strong. Since it was released in the holy month of Ramzan, several Muslim audiences haven’t seen the film. Eid falls on Tuesday, May 2. As a result, if Heropanti 2 or Runway 34 doesn’t get enough audiences in the weekend, the exhibitors might replace its shows with that of KGF - Chapter 2. This will prove detrimental to their overall box office collections. Hence, it's crucial that Heropanti 2 and Runway 34 have to be well-made films in order to sustain.

Ready to up the action quotient with Heropanti 2, Tiger Shroff discusses consciously playing righteous characters to inspire his fan base of children

Heropanti 2 promises all that one expects from a Tiger Shroff fare — gravity-defying stunts, slick dance moves and a good-versus-evil story at the core. The actor rarely veers away from action, the genre he knows best. He claims the difference is in the treatment of his films, with him trying to up the ante with every actioner.
“The world of Heropanti 2 is different in terms of action. If Baaghi was raw and rustic, this is massy and set in a glossy world. It is not muddy and dirty; every frame is slick. It has the vibe of say, Mission: Impossible meets James Bond meets War,” shares Shroff enthusiastically.
Whether one agrees with the parallels or not, it can’t be denied that the actor has a finger on the audience’s pulse. His movies have a way of appealing to their target audience. For now, Shroff is happy to play up the action image; experimentation can come later. “I am following the formula that works for me. I am aware of what’s working and what’s not working in terms of my career. So, I give my audience what they expect of me.”
Ahmed Khan’s directorial venture, also starring Nawazuddin Siddiqui and Tara Sutaria, sees Shroff as a smart hacker who is brought in to stop cyber crime. The actor says that he chooses his projects carefully, going not only by his role but also by the audience’s possible take-away from the film. The latter is particularly important to him as he enjoys a wide fan base among children.
“Most of the time, I play a righteous [character]. I have people from young age groups following me. So, for me, it’s important to keep kids in mind when I am choosing my scripts and characters. I don’t want to [misguide] our future generation. I consider myself blessed that I have the responsibility as a lot of kids look up to me.”

Tiger Shroff, who is ready to grace the big screen after two years of the pandemic, is busy promoting Heropanti 2. Ahead of the film’s release on April 29, the actor has decided to pay a visit to the Ajmer Sharif Dargah in Rajasthan. A source reveals that Shroff has a custom of visiting holy places before the release of movies he holds close to his heart.
“Heropanti 2 is special to Tiger for more than one reason. It reunites him with his frequent collaborator, director Ahmed Khan. More importantly, it is the spiritual sequel to his 2014 debut film. Grateful for the journey he has had in Bollywood since Heropanti, Tiger is hopeful that the upcoming actioner — like its predecessor — will spin box-office magic,” says the source, adding that the actor will head to the shrine tomorrow.
“This will be Tiger’s first visit to Ajmer Sharif. He has taken a day off from the whirlwind promotions to pay obeisance.”
The actioner, also starring Nawazuddin Siddiqui and Tara Sutaria, will clash at the box office with Ajay Devgn and Amitabh Bachchan-starrer Runway 34.

Nawaz, who portrays a magician with feminine traits in Heropanti 2, discusses adding shades to make his negative character entertaining

Playing a villain is no biggie for Nawazuddin Siddiqui. But playing one against Tiger Shroff, who enjoys a strong fan base among kids, would be a tricky affair. Stepping into the role of an antagonist in Heropanti 2, Siddiqui says his character Laila was built in a way that it would appeal to children. “Tiger has a huge fan following among kids. So, my character had to be equally entertaining. It’s not a part that could [benefit from] method acting; instead, the presentation enhanced it. Laila is also shown as a magician, so that kids could like him. Plus, he has a feminine touch,” explains the actor.
Ahmed Khan’s directorial venture sees Shroff’s Babloo lock horns with Laila in a bid to stop cyber crimes across the world. To Siddiqui, Laila is the perfect example of how negative roles offer an actor more room to experiment — a luxury that is arguably not afforded when playing an all-white, holier-than-thou protagonist.
“When you play a villain, there is more scope to perform. So, I had the opportunity to explore [different shades within the role]. Usually, there is not much scope for such performances in mainstream films. But Ahmed felt only I could pull off this role, and he created a unique look for me. A lot of things were created spontaneously. For instance, the idea of giving him a feminine touch was built on the spot.”
For him, it has been a two-decade romance with acting. The actor says spending years in front of the camera has made him a better artiste. “With experience, you find ease in every role. You also tend to look at every character with a different point of view. Experience truly matters, and you, as an artiste, can bring a lot to the table. For me, it is important that I don’t repeat myself. When I was doing Heropanti 2, I was also doing No Land's Man. I enjoyed [juggling] two different genres.”

Nawaz on how he wove in his Heropanti 2 character’s traits in real life to do justice to part

The most, if not the only, fascinating part of the Heropanti 2 trailer is Nawazuddin Siddiqui’s Laila. As a ruthless don who has a feminine side to him, his character is unpredictable and quirky. For the actor, the biggest challenge was to perfect the gait, which had to depict the power of a don while retaining feminine elegance.
“I incorporated the [traits of] the character in my real life. Laila’s walk and the feminine touch [in his manners] were prominently visible in my gestures,” he says.
Before reporting to a film’s set, the actor is known to immerse himself in his character. It wasn’t any different for Ahmed Khan’s directorial venture. Siddiqui adds, “Many asked me about the change in my body language, and told me that my walk is different from my usual style. Many thought I am displaying feminine qualities. That’s how engrossed I was in Laila’s role. I [dropped] the mannerisms after the shoot was completed.”

Ahmed Khan discusses roping in Nawazuddin as the antagonist in Heropanti 2, opposite the mighty Tiger Shroff

When one considers the elaborate stunts that Tiger Shroff can pull off, they would assume that the makers of his next, Heropanti 2, would rope in an antagonist with comparable physical prowess to tackle the actor on screen. Ahmed Khan instead picked Nawazuddin Siddiqui, an actor, who, he says, can “hold the screen with his facial expressions alone”.
Khan tells mid-day, “When we started scripting the film, we knew we needed a man with [command over his] craft. We began to wonder who would portray this part on the celluloid and deliver exactly what we had in mind. In the film Kick, when I saw Mr Siddiqui perform against Salman Khan, a man who could fight anybody in the world, I realised that this man can hold the screen with his facial expressions alone. So Nawaz bhai was the first and the only option for the role of Laila. When you see his eyes, you can see the pain of the character.”
Khan credits Siddiqui for his ability to showcase the character’s turmoil and malices at once. “When he laughs, he laughs like a hyena. He is so intelligent that he can rule the world, and almost does it. This character is confused, but he expresses it. I requested him to hear the script, and he loved it at the first go.”

Even as Tiger Shroff has begun promotions for Heropanti 2, another project is vying for his attention. We hear the actor will have to report to the set of Ganapath next month. While a chunk of the actioner was shot in London over the past few months, director Vikas Bahl has lined up the final schedule in Mumbai.
A source reveals that an elaborate set is being erected at Film City where leads Shroff and Kriti Sanon will can a song and some major action sequences. “The last leg will be shot at Khandala Ghat in Film City. The production design team is building a set of a church in the premises. With the set-up expected to be ready in the next few days, Tiger will face the camera by the first week of April. He will juggle the shoot with the promotional activities of Heropanti 2, which will go into overdrive ahead of its April 29 release.”
Ganapath is said to be a dystopian thriller, with high-octane action sequences choreographed by international stunt directors.

From changing his gait for billionaire act in Heropanti 2 to picking up salsa, Nawaz on enjoying being part of mainstream movies

Salsa isn’t the first thing you associate with Nawazuddin Siddiqui. But trying his hand at new things is a classic trait of the actor. So, while he is giving romantic stories a go with Tiku Weds Sheru, he has also picked up a move or two for a dance number in Kangana Ranaut’s production. “The choreographer made me do salsa and some more dance [styles]. The [team] gauged that I [understand] rhythm, so they made me practice before I faced the camera. They were more confident about my skills than I was,” laughs Siddiqui, who was recently nominated at the International Emmy Awards.
After lying low in 2021, the actor will be seen in several films in the coming year, including Heropanti 2, Jogira Sara Ra Ra and Bole Chudiyan. It is interesting to note how he is consciously choosing movies that are completely at odds with the dark films he is known for. Siddiqui says he is enjoying mainstream offerings like Heropanti 2, where he will be seen playing a billionaire.
“In mainstream films, I don’t know why people always look at me through a different lens. In art films, people look at me as a common man, while commercial filmmakers make me look rich. It’s all a matter of perception.”
Not surprisingly, the actor is bringing his own quirk to the role in the Tiger Shroff-starrer. “For the character of a billionaire, I tried to ape Vinod Khanna’s walk. I personally adored his walking style. I had worked with him on a TV serial years ago, but unfortunately, it was never released. I tried to capture his [gait], while exaggerating it a little.”
He views mainstream projects — from romantic dramas to actioners — as his attempt to step out of his comfort zone. “For me, even romantic films are an experiment because I have never done them before. In the midst of hardcore cinema, if I get to do a romantic film, I feel good as an actor.”

Nawazuddin credits OTT platforms for taking Indian stories to the global audience as he bags Emmy nomination for his Serious Men act

His peers will admit it’s not easy to surpass Nawazuddin Siddiqui’s performance in a film. But it won’t be wrong to say that the actor surpassed himself in Serious Men (2020), as the shrewd Ayyan Mani who refuses to be a victim in the dog-eat-dog world. His portrayal in the Sudhir Mishra-directed movie has earned him a Best Performance by an Actor nomination at the International Emmy Awards.
“Working with Sudhir and playing the role of Ayyan Mani was a dream come true for me. The International Emmy nomination is a validation of all the hard work we poured into the film. I feel honoured to be part of meaningful stories that are being recognized globally, thanks to platforms like Netflix,” says Siddiqui.
The actor has been shooting for Heropanti 2 with Tiger Shroff in London. The Ahmed Khan-directed venture is as mainstream as they come, a far cry from the Netflix satire. Siddiqui says it’s a calculated move to juggle masala films and offbeat cinema. “Since my theatre days, we would enact Shakespeare stories, and breathe life into Sanskrit stories. So the practice [of juggling two diverse worlds] has stayed with me. If I do a commercial film like Heropanti 2, I should be able to mould myself.”
The actioner, his second outing with Shroff after Munna Michael (2017), sees him play a billionaire. From essaying a common man in his past few offerings to exploring the other end of the spectrum, Siddiqui enjoys testing his versatility by taking on drastically different roles. “That’s the beauty of being an actor — he should be able to play a common man as well as [a billionaire]. I have been trying to ace this quality. If I am playing a commoner, I should not stand out in a crowd. And when I am portraying someone important, others [in the frame] should be overshadowed by me.”

“No one walked the way Vinod Khanna did,” said Amitabh Bachchan in an emotional blog after the actor passed away in 2017. Khanna had an aura that was unmatched and he was particularly known for his ‘panther walk’. A version of his iconic walk has been borrowed by actor Nawazuddin Siddiqui for his character in Heropanti 2. Nawaz often infuses quirks and traits of people around him in the characters he plays on screen. This time around, he has sought inspiration from the dashing Vinod Khanna.
Nawaz spoke to us from London, where he is shooting for Heropanti 2 with Tiger Shroff, which is being directed by Ahmed Khan. While the actor stayed tight-lipped about his character in the film, he shared an interesting detail. “I observe interesting people a lot aur woh dimaag mein reh jaata hai,” he said, adding, “For instance, the energy is slightly different, but I have tried to replicate Vinod Khanna’s walk in Heropanti 2. I loved him as an actor and also his persona and style. Unka ek alag hi swag tha. His walk had a slight feminine grace. Usi movement ko maine exaggerate kiya hai. Ahmed bhai and I discussed it and decided to go ahead with it.”
On the work front, Nawaz is also excited about his film No Land’s Man getting global recognition. The film, helmed by Bangladeshi director Mostofa Sarwar Farooki, deals with hate crime and discrimination. It has been shortlisted to compete for the prestigious Kim Jiseok Award at the upcoming 26th Busan International Film Festival.
Talking about the film, the actor says, “Main kaun hoon and where do I belong is a relevant question today. We are territorial. Nature ne aapko ek planet diya. Insaan ne apni apni jagah bana di. Har koi dusre ke ilaake ko hadapne ke koshish mein hai. This desire for more is never-ending. The film deals with this issue.”

Axe kicks, butterfly kicks, uppercuts, and jabs—name it, and Tiger Shroff has done it all in the seven years since he made his debut with Heropanti (2014). Not one to rest, the action-star is raising the bar in the sequel of the Sajid Nadiadwala production. A trade source informed that Jr Shroff has wrapped up some adrenaline-fuelled sequences in just five days after the second lockdown was lifted. “[Under the guidance of] action director Parvez Shaikh, Tiger and Nawazuddin [Siddiqui] shot some high-octane sequences, which also included a car blast. The film has been planned on a grand scale with stunts that are different from Tiger’s usual style, for which he trained under fitness expert Rajendra Dhole.”
Shroff will take off overseas in September to can some chase scenarios. “Before the crew heads for the international shoot, the production house will get everyone vaccinated,” says the source, adding that the initial plan was to shoot across 10 countries, but “now the decision will depend on travel restrictions imposed in other countries”.

It’s back to juggling work within a tight schedule for Tara Sutaria, who’s currently shooting for two films — Ek Villain Returns and Heropanti 2 — simultaneously. The Student Of The Year 2 (SOTY 2) actress, however, is not complaining. “It is exhausting, but rewarding!” she says, adding, “It’s been a while since we shot for a film as there were restrictions due to the pandemic this year, too. I am just happy that my mind is occupied with the one thing I enjoy doing the most — and that’s acting.”
The actioner Heropanti 2 sees Tara reuniting with Tiger Shroff, her first hero when she debuted with SOTY 2. “With every film, the set and your co-stars become your world for a certain period of time. People tend to move on once the project wraps up, but that hasn’t been the case with Tiger and I treasure that about him. We managed to stay in touch over the years. I must say that among all my costars, I am the closest to Tiger,” she says. She elaborates, “I did my first film with him and he is also the first friend I made in the industry. We are similar in many ways.”
What’s common between the two is that they are both shy and reserved. So, how did the two strike a bond and open up with each other? Tara is quick to add, “Personally, I have grown and come out of my shell. I am quite chatty now in comparison to how I used to be. An industry like showbiz brings out that side of you, which you didn’t know existed in you. As for Tiger, we’ve spent a lot of time with each other and that’s how the friendship grew stronger. We are now very chatty and enjoy long conversations. In fact, we have a ball of a time on the sets of Heropanti 2 and are always cracking each other up. Well, the jokes are often lame, if a third person comes to know what we are laughing about they might think we are really silly (laughs!).”
Tara is also discovering a new equation now with her co-star Arjun Kapoor with the film Ek Villain Returns. “We might come across as an unusual pair, but we have an amazing time on the set. Arjun is a very sweet guy,” says Tara. The film also stars John Abraham, who she’s yet to shoot with. Interestingly, in an earlier interaction with BT, Tara had opened up about John being her family friend. She had said, “I remember visiting John ever since I was a kid. He’s often surprised with the filmy conversations we have when we meet now, as we never imagined back then that we’d be working in the same industry.”
How comfortable does she feel to share screen space with the senior actor? “This whole situation is so unexpected,” she says, adding, “It is exciting to be able to work with him as I have seen his films and like his work. I am excited to see what the vibes are going to be like on the set. The coolest part about him is that he doesn’t give the I-am-the-senior kind of a vibe. He is too chilled out.”
While work keeps her busy, Tara misses the family-time she had in the last few months. “There cannot be a bigger blessing than having a roof above your head, food on your table and a family to spend time with in these terrible times,” she says, concluding, “I am sure through these tough days we all have felt lonely at some point, which is why it is always important to have the right people by your side. This period has shown us how important it is to have a wonderful personal life along with a professional life, and that one should not take our near-and-dear ones for granted.”

Sources say Nawazuddin Siddiqui latest addition to Tiger Shroff-led Heropanti 2; to play leading lady Tara Sutaria’s sibling

It’s back to the beginning for Tiger Shroff. The actor, who made his Bollywood debut with 'Heropanti' in 2014, was shooting for the sequel to the actioner earlier this year. While Tara Sutaria plays his love interest in the Ahmed Khan-directed venture, mid-day has learnt that there is an addition to the cast. With this film, Nawazuddin Siddiqui will return to masala movies after his niche offerings, 'Raat Akeli Hai' and 'Serious Men' last year.
“In all likelihood, Nawaz and Tara will play siblings in the movie. While Tiger filmed a significant part of the first schedule in Mumbai before the state-wide restrictions were levied, Nawaz is expected to join in the next schedule. Tiger will juggle this action thriller with the shoot of Baaghi 4,” says a source. The project marks Siddiqui’s reunion with Shroff after the dance film, 'Munna Michael' (2017).

TV production houses look at Umbergaon, Hyderabad and Goa as possible options to shift base for shoots

Apart from films, TV shows are also in a tizzy after the announcement. Many TV producers had already started doing the groundwork in the last couple of weeks after cases were on a rise in Mumbai. The places that have emerged as preferred destinations to shoot are Umbergaon, Goa and Hyderabad. Rajesh Ram Singh, producer of Ghum Hai Kisikey Pyaar Meiin and Chhoti Saradarni, says, “Hyderabad has Ramoji Film City and the probability of shoots being stalled is less.” He has also shortlisted Goa for the shoot. “We have seen a bungalow there for indoor shoots. Now we have to take a final call in a day or two. Our teams are geared up to shoot at a new location,” he shares.
Producer Siddharth Kumar Tewary’s studio in Umbergaon is also a possible temporary option for some producers, who have done a recce of the location recently. Siddharth shares, “I am already shooting my show, RadhaKrishn, here, and this is a complete green zone with all the facilities. The place is only a two-and-a-half-hour drive from Mumbai.”
Meanwhile, some producers do not want to shift locations and feel that’s not a solution given the uncertainty of the pandemic. Producer Nitin Vaidya, who has shows like Punyashlok Ahilya Bai and Rudrakaal, says he will go as per the government’s order and stop shooting. “We will air the bank of episodes we have and then the re-runs will be aired. We can’t be changing locations because the Coronavirus scare is everywhere,” he says.

Enjoying his second innings after a 15-year break due to medical condition, lyricist Mehboob teams up with A R Rahman for Heropanti 2

From the playful Kuchi Kuchi Rakkama in Bombay (1995) to the heart-breaking Tadap Tadap in Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam (1999), Mehboob’s verses were a staple in Hindi movies in the ’90s and early 2000s. However, the senior lyricist took a break from work in 2004 after he suffered from slipped disc. The road to recovery may have been long, but now, he is back at the writing table, creating songs for Tiger Shroff’s Heropanti 2. What adds to his joy is that the film reunites him with A R Rahman after Yuva (2004).
“Rahman taught me not to ponder over a track after it is complete. When we recorded Tanha Tanha [Rangeela, 1995], I asked him if we could hear it again, but he told me to move ahead instead of focusing on what’s already done,” recounts Mehboob, appreciating how the composer’s passion hasn’t waned over the years. “One night, I had written the mukhda for a Heropanti song. When Rahman heard it on the phone at 2 am, he was so excited that he asked me to write the antara, and immediately put Ahmed [Khan, director] on a conference call to finalise it. He always pushes me to give my best.”
Life has come a full circle for Mehboob with Heropanti 2 — where he wrote lyrics for Jackie Shroff’s songs in Rangeela, he is now creating gems for his son Tiger. Having begun his second innings with Rangeela Raja (2019), the lyricist is raring to go. “In the early 2000s, I had excruciating back pain. When I did an MRI in 2004, we found out that I had multiple slipped discs. I was on bed rest for more than eight years. Then, my wife passed on in 2013. Filled with grief and pain, I had to take a break from work.”
