HINDUSTAN TIMES (August 9, 2024)
Akshay Kumar, known for his on-screen heroics, is equally celebrated for his off-screen generosity and philanthropic endeavours.
On Thursday morning, the actor visited the Haji Ali Dargah in Mumbai, contributing a substantial ₹1.21 crore for its renovation. This follows his earlier donation of Rs. 3 crore towards the construction of the Ram Mandir in Ayodhya, Uttar Pradesh.
“With the Haji Ali Dargah’s renovation underway, Padma Shri Akshay Kumar, a true Mumbaikar, was the quickest to respond with great warmth and devotion. On Thursday, he generously took responsibility for a section of the renovation expenses, amounting to Rs. 1,21,00,000,” Mohammad Ahmed Taher, administrative officer of Haji Ali Trust, said in a statement.
Additionally, on Tuesday, Kumar, who is preparing for the release of his upcoming film Khel Khel Mein on Independence Day, was also spotted distributing langar.
Not only that, during the pandemic in 2020, the 56-year-old made significant contributions, including a sum of Rs. 1 crore to former cricketer Gautam Gambhir’s foundation and a generous Rs. 25 crore to the PM Cares Fund.
Furthermore, recently, when producer Vashu Bhagnani faced criticism for non-payment of dues for his films, including Kumar’s Bade Miyan Chote Miyan, the actor chose to hold his own payment to ensure that other crew members received their rightful compensation.

mid-day brings you pictures of Amitabh Bachchan's food donation drive, as he teams up with Haji Ali Trust to distribute ration across Mumbai amid Coronavirus crisis
Upala KBR (MID-DAY; April 6, 2020)
Only days ago, Amitabh Bachchan had shared a post, musing that those who believe in helping others, do so without fanfare. A man of his words, the megastar has been quietly working with the Haji Ali Dargah Trust and the Pir Makhdum Saheb Charitable Trust (at the Mahim Dargah) to provide food to the needy in these times. Bachchan, as shared in his blog, has been ensuring that 2,000 food kits are supplied every day — with 200 distributed at the Haji Ali Dargah and the Mahim Dargah, and the remaining 1,800 packets being sent to Babulnath Mandir, Mira Datar Dargah, Kolsa Bunder, Lotus Colony in Worli and the premises of Tata Memorial Hospital.
mid-day laid its hands on some pictures of the teams distributing the food kits across south and central Mumbai on Friday. Confirming the development, Noor Parkar, who works with the Pir Makhdum Saheb Charitable Trust, reveals, "We have been distributing ration to various families after checking their ration or Aadhar cards. Our volunteers have been given masks, hand gloves, and have been following all safety measures. People eagerly await the daily ration and cooperate with us fully."

I enjoy walking on Juhu beach and eating bhutta-Sonam Kapoor

Rachana Dubey (BOMBAY TIMES; June 9, 2018)
Sonam Kapoor is an out-and-out Mumbai girl. She believes that the city is one of the safest in India and it’s her absolute favourite, too. “Mumbai is my home and it always gives me reasons to feel proud of it,” says the actress, who is born and brought up in Maximum City.
She adds, “For me, flirting with Mumbai is hanging out at Juhu Beach. I’m a complete Juhu girl; I was born and brought up here. I enjoy walking on the beach early in the morning or in the evening and eating bhutta. Also, drives are the best in Mumbai. You can take your car to any ice cream parlour or Amar Juice Centre, where you can gorge on lip-smacking ice creams and pav bhaji, served right inside your car. There are many street food joints outside Mithibai College as well. The bhurji pav there is amazing. I also love Chowpatty in South Mumbai. You can see the Queen’s Necklace from there.”
When asked what she truly misses doing in Mumbai after becoming a celebrity, Sonam says, “I miss a lot of things — enjoying street food, walking on the streets and going to the beach… I used to love visiting Haji Ali. I feel bad that I don’t get to hang out much in my city. I miss going to Bandstand. There was a time when I used to meet my friends there every day. We’d walk around the promenade and also go to Jogger’s Park. I miss all of that.”
I don't believe men will misbehave with women in Haji Ali's sanctum sanctorum-Shabana Azmi

Renuka Vyavahare (BOMBAY TIMES; August 30, 2016)
On Friday August 26, the
Bombay High Court passed a landmark verdict, allowing full access to
women in the Haji Ali Dargah, including the sanctum sanctorum, which was
restricted to men since 2012. The ban was imposed by the Haji Ali
Dargah Trust citing entry of women in close proximity to the tomb of a
male saint as a sin in Islam. Actress, social activist and a campaigner of equal rights for women, Shabana Azmi has batted for HC's decision.
She told Bombay Times, “I welcome the reversal by the High Court of the ban imposed four years ago. Women have been allowed in the 15th century Haji Ali Dargah for the last 187 years. I remember going there as a child. The trustees suddenly decided in 2012 that women should not be allowed access for reasons of their safety and security. What a poor impression they must have of Muslim men. I don't believe men will misbehave with women in the sanctum sanctorum. It was a blatant misuse of power. The court did well to lift the ban and kudos to Bharatiya Muslim Mahila Andolan for steering the agitation.“
According to a report in Times of India (dated August 26), the trust's advocate Shoaib Memon informed that the (previous) arrangement provided for a secure place for women to offer prayers. He argued that the Article 26 in the Constitution of India confers upon the Trust a fundamental right to manage its own affairs in matters of religion and as such, interference is uncalled for by a third agency.
However, Advocate General Shreehari Aney argued that if the Trust says it has a fundamental right to manage its religious affairs, then it has to be weighed against Articles 14 (Right to Equality) and 15 (Prohibition of discrimination on grounds of religion, race, caste, sex or place of birth) of the Constitution.
The HC bench believed that the ban is in contravention of Articles 14 (Right to Life), 15 (Prohibition of discrimination)and 25 (Right to practice religion) of the Constitution of India. It stated that women be allowed entry on par with men and the dargah should take steps for safety of women. The verdict stated that the Trust has no power to alter or modify the mode or manner of religious practices of any individual or any group. It is the duty of the State to ensure the safety and security of women at such places and ensure that their fundamental rights are protected.
Haji Rafat, leader of the All India Majilis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM), said the high court should not have interfered in the issue. For now, there is a stay on the entry for women as HC has stayed its order for six weeks following a plea by the Trust, which intends to approach the Supreme Court.

SALIM KHAN TWEETS
“High court judgement on Haji Ali endorses what Hadees and Quran have said. To be a good Muslim, you have to be a good human being. Mazar and Durgah are graves, men and women both can visit them as there is no gender discrimination in Islam. Mullas and Maulvis are complicating an uncomplicated religion like Islam. Even Fatwa is not a verdict as people think, it's an opinion given by an Islamic scholar.“

Emraan Hashmi shoots at Haji Ali as he believes it is lucky for him?

Sonali Joshi Pitale (MID-DAY; June 21, 2014)
Emraan Hashmi has been busy shooting for his upcoming film, Raja Natwarlal, and while the actor is not exactly superstitious, he does feel that the Haji Ali dargah has always been lucky for him.
Says a unit member, “We were shooting for a few sequences and during a casual discussion, Emraan narrated the story of how the dargah has been featured in many of his previous films. He also said that all his films, that had at least had one scene shot there, did very well at the box office. He then mentioned this to director Kunal Deshmukh, asking him to shoot a scene at the dargah.”
The source adds that Emraan insisted on shooting at Haji Ali dargah as he considers it lucky for him. “After searching the area thoroughly, we finally zeroed in on a small house opposite the dargah. The scene was shot in such a way that the dargah is visible in the background,” says the source, adding that the actor also visits the dargah whenever he gets some free time.
