I have not had a samosa in 14 years-Gurmeet Choudhary

Certain that his dietary discipline is second to none, Gurmeet Choudhary, who underwent rigorous training for Commander Karan Saxena, on achieving fitness milestones while inching towards 40
Sonia Lulla (MID-DAY; July 3, 2024)
Tasked with playing the role of a RA&W agent in Commander Karan Saxena, Gurmeet Choudhary didn’t need to look too far for inspiration.
“My dad was responsible for training the new recruits who would join the army, and I have seen him train since I was a child,” says the actor, adding, “I’d [exercise] along with him and have enjoyed doing so since childhood. I like to be physically fit, and am a black belt holder. But the training required for the role of a RA&W agent is quite different. We had to shoot in real location, and pull off real fight sequences. For that, a lot of practice was needed. I requested my dad [to help me], and he taught me how to hold and load the gun, and how to use it as a torch.”
While Choudhary, who made his debut with a teleseries, has been applauded for his physical prowess, (“Had I not been an actor, I’d be in the army,” he says), he believes adding sprinting to his regimen served as a game-changer.
“I was clocking in 100 metres in 12 seconds, which is when my coach encouraged me to compete in the nationals. It helped me build immense stamina. At the time, I was working on two projects, and would, at times, go without sleep for four days. I could endure that because I practiced sprinting. If you notice, marathoners are lean, but sprinters are muscular. And even if your sprinting bout is only 12 seconds long, you need to warm up and prep for it for an hour. I was able to beat sprinters who are in their 20s, and a lot of the credit goes to the strength training I have done over the years. People speak of the importance of weight training today. But, in the west, whether you are a dancer or any other sports-person, weight-training is compulsorily done to retain muscle mass. A lot of that muscle mass helped me sprint better. That, along with my martial arts programme, helped me build a [holistic] routine,” says the actor, who lifts every evening, and practices either MMA or sprinting each morning.
Weighing in on the popular notion that the success of an exercise programme is “80 per cent dependent on the diet, and 20 per cent, on the exercise regimen”, Choudhary says, given a chance, he’d alter the proportions.
“I have understood that a fitness programme is dependent on the diet by 99 per cent. Only if your diet is absolutely regimented can you achieve and maintain a fantastic frame. My diet is severely controlled. I haven’t eaten a samosa in 14 years, and haven’t had sugar in years. At this stage in my career, I think I don’t have taste buds. I have created such a system for my body that I [don’t want to consume anything that’s hyper-palatable]. It’s a sacrifice I have made to achieve the things I have. In this world, merely two percent of individuals create a name for themselves. If I am among them, it is on me to make the required sacrifices. I have been training for years, but each day that I wake up, I fight the desire to eat sugar, and the urge to skip the gym. But, it is worth it all.”
Along with his fitness enthusiast wife, actor Debina Bonnerjee, Choudhary says he encourages healthy eating habits among his kids. “We don’t let them watch the screen while having their meals. Our kids have never eaten pizza, or packaged foods. They also get different meals across the seven days of the week so that they can be introduced to new tastes.”
Gurmeet on his daily dietary plan
- I begin my day with butter coffee. The ghee we consume comes from Himachal [Pradesh]. An hour later, I consume a celery, lemon, ginger, amla, and mint juice.
- My breakfast comprises five whole eggs, five egg whites, and avocado. An hour later, I have a few soaked and peeled almonds with milk.
- Lunch comprises boiled chicken with broccoli and mushrooms. Later in the day, I have some blueberries.
- In the evening, I again have avocado, and grilled fish or boiled chicken.
- Before I head to bed, I have a protein shake with supplements.
Jab bhagwaan deta hai, toh chappar phaad kar deta hai, say Gurmeet Choudhary, Debina Bonnerjee on expecting their second child

Of late, life has been full of surprises for Debina Bonnerjee and Gurmeet Choudhary. They welcomed their first child, Lianna, in April. Four months later, the couple took to Instagram to announce their second pregnancy. The ecstatic couple is waiting with bated breath for the arrival of their second child, who will be 10 months apart from Lianna.
Debina shares, “Becoming a mother is a beautiful feeling, especially for someone who kept motherhood on the shelf for a long time and then struggled for almost seven years to embrace it. When we learnt that we would be blessed with a second child, my happiness knew no bounds. We always wished to have two children.”
Gurmeet adds, “The journey to parenthood hasn’t been easy. Par jab bhagwaan deta hai, toh chappar phaad kar deta hai. When we got the news, it felt unbelievable. Our family is complete now. During my growing up years, I heard the saying ‘Hum Do Hamaare Do’ a lot and it has happened to us. Lianna ko uska bhai ya behen mil jaayegi. It’s important to have a sibling, especially when both parents are working. My children will have each other’s company.”
The couple says that the news of the second pregnancy caught them off guard. Debina says, “Guru (Gurmeet) couldn’t believe it. We were in denial for almost an hour. It’s nothing short of a miracle, as we were certain that it couldn’t happen to us. I was ecstatic not only about the news but also to learn that my body overcame medical problems. My mom says that Lianna has got her soulmate.”
Gurmeet agrees, “I could not believe it to be honest (laughs!). I suspected the pregnancy kit to be faulty and wanted to see a doctor. Till then I didn’t know whether it would be too premature to celebrate. Itne saalon tak aisa kuchh nahi hua toh achaaknak se kaise. Achhi cheez ko time lagta hai par ho jaati hai.”
While they are enjoying this phase, trolls have been busy taking digs at the couple ever since Debina posted about their second pregnancy. The actress, who usually turns a blind eye to trolling, admits that it took her a while to ace the art of not paying heed to toxicity.
She says, “There were comments like I only want to deliver children and I am not interested in getting back to my fit self or my career. Many said another pregnancy in quick succession is harmful to me. People don’t bat an eyelid before passing judgments. How can they expect me to consult a doctor for an unplanned pregnancy? They are worried if I would be able to spend enough time with Lianna. What do they expect me to do? It doesn’t happen at will and who better than me to vouch for it.”
She adds, “I can’t worry about people’s opinions anymore. Also, as a working mother, I don’t want to be a part of any race. If I want, I can get back to work six months after delivering my second child. I am not competing with anyone.”
Gurmeet has adopted a rather positive way of handling negativity on social media. He says, “Debina and I often sing Kuchh toh log kahenge, logon ka kaam hai kehna. As actors and public figures, we are more exposed to scrutiny. However, I don’t delve into negative comments and consciously avoid the ones that appear even slightly negative. Toh na hi galat cheez padho na hi aapko affect hoga (smiles).”
Gurmeet Choudhary hits out at trolls: Hum jo hain, humein malum hai

Gurmeet Choudhary and Debina Bonnerjee’s phones haven’t stopped ringing since they announced their second pregnancy, with congratulatory messages pouring in for the actor-couple. However, there is a section of people questioning their decision to have a second child just over four months after the birth of their first child — their daughter, Lianna. But Choudhary chooses to cut the noise out.
He tells us, “I do read the comments, but when I sense it is turning into trolling, I stop. Hum jo hain, humein malum hai. Before Lianna, we walked a very difficult path to having a child. So, becoming parents for the second time is a miracle. We are blessed.”
He also mentions having a second child was always the plan: “I always wanted Lianna to have a sibling, jiske saath woh badi ho... Mere bhai aur mere beech 11 mahine ka difference hai bas, we grew up together. So, I think it (having a second child) is the best thing to happen to us. Now, we will be a complete family. As they say, hum do, humare do.”
The actor, who was last seen in the music video Teri Galiyon Se, is preparing to take on daddy duties for the second time. But this time around, he feels he is better prepared.
“When Debina was pregnant for the first time, we assumed that it was the most difficult phase, because one has to be so careful and keep a check on so many things. Even after having a kid, it is still the same because we have to be extra careful and take care of everything about her. I have to admit that Lianna ne humein warm-up kar diya hai to be parents again,” he quips.
Calling this phase of his life the best ever, personally and professionally, Choudhary goes on to say, “For me, it was all about my family first and then work. Now, there is a sense of calm that has entered our lives. Watching our daughter grow up, seeing every small reaction of hers and getting surprised by them all... We are so happy in this phase of our lives, personally and professionally. I think that is the true meaning of success for me.”
There should be a strict rule for vaccination all over India-Gurmeet Choudhary

With the on-ground situation getting better, the second wave on the verge of ending and the country in unlock mode, Gurmeet Choudhary is happy but adds we still have a long way to go.
The actor says, “It is outstanding that we have been able to overcome the second wave. Earlier, we were fighting for beds, oxygen, medicines and ambulances, but now people are struggling to make ends meet. I have got many requests for jobs as people don’t have money. Through my foundation, we have been trying to help as many people as possible.”
Recently, he helped a woman get a bed for her husband in a hospital, but a few days later, he heard that her husband passed away. “It hadn’t been even four days since his death, and she was calling me because she needed a job to run her house, pay hospital bills and take care of her baby. It was heartbreaking as she wasn’t even able to mourn him. I spoke to some friends who are in the corporate sector and thankfully, got a job for her. That’s when I realised that collaborating with corporates for jobs is the way out.”
With work restarting, he realises that people will soon get busy with their respective lives. He says, “In the last two months, my team and I have been trying and doing our best. Now, the focus should be on getting people vaccinated. Even now, there are people who think it is a myth. There should be a strict rule for vaccination all over India. Our government is serious but there are many people who are not serious about being jabbed.”
Gurmeet Choudhary lashes out at black marketeers of Covid medicines

Rishabh Suri (HINDUSTAN TIMES; May 18, 2021)
Gurmeet Choudhary has been at the forefront to help people suffering during the second wave of Coronavirus crisis. From arranging oxygen cylinders and beds in hospitals to constantly amplifying the SOS calls on social media and even donating his plasma after defeating the virus, the actor has done his bit to the fullest.
“This movement is going to get a lot bigger. I’m making a bigger team because right now, the focus is on helping people with medicines and hospital beds, cylinders and ventilators on priority,” says Choudhary, who has recently launched a makeshift hospital in Nagpur, Maharashtra, for Covid-19 patients.
That said, the biggest roadblock the 40-year-old says he’s facing is the black marketing of these critical items. Extremely angered at such malpractices that, too, during a crisis, he rues, “I’m personally facing this problem so often. People call me and say, ‘Mere papa ko bacha lo, woh mar jayenge’. But, there are people who hear this kind of stuff with their own ears yet put medicines on the black market, and hoard essential items. They just don’t deserve to live. They’re black marketing something as critical as medicines and oxygen, and stopping it from reaching people.”
Having battled the virus along with his wife, actor Debina Bonnerjee, in October last year, Choudhary feels that those indulging in such unfair practices should be brought to justice, and everyone should use social media to expose them.
“Strict action lena chahiye. Ab time aa gaya hai ek movement start karne ka. Wherever items are being sold in black, it’s the responsibility of people to click photos of the items and tell everyone where it’s being done. This is the biggest issue everyone’s facing right now. Chaah ke bhi kuchh nahin kar paa rahe hain hum, kyunki samaan mil hi nahin raha. We have to run around a lot and work on the ground level for this,” he shares.
Adopt a patient if you can and if you can’t, share the patient’s details with me-Gurmeet Choudhary

Gurmeet Choudhary has been extending help to COVID patients in need of plasma, oxygen and more
Unnati Joshi (BOMBAY TIMES; April 25, 2021)
As the country struggles against the deadly Coronavirus, Gurmeet Choudhary is making efforts to help people in dire need. The Khamoshiyan actor recently assembled a team and circulated a number on social media asking people to reach out to him for help. He says that Sonu Sood inspired him to start the campaign. “A few of my friends and relatives, who are financially stable, were struggling to get a bed in hospitals. They would call me for help, and that’s when I realised the situation needs immediate intervention. So, I decided to start a campaign on social media. I shared a number in a post and asked people in need to reach out to me. I was also inspired by Sonu Sood. I know him closely, we have worked on Paltan together and I’m proud of what he is doing. As actors, we have the power to reach out to millions, and I feel this is the right way to use it,” he says.
Gurmeet and his wife Debina Bonnerjee had tested COVID positive last year. He feels the situation is worse now. Sharing his first-hand experience of the current COVID crisis, the actor tells us, “When Debina and I tested positive, things were bad, but now the situation is worse.”
Gurmeet adds, “The second wave is dangerous, the virus is spreading like wildfire. People often call me and cry, log bolte hain meri maa ko bacha lo, save my child, my sister is suffering... it’s devastating. I haven’t slept for the past five-six days. There’s a shortage of medicines, injections, beds, oxygen cylinders, a lot of people are calling us for plasma, but awareness hi nahi hai, people don’t know about it. Debina and I donated plasma after our recovery, we shared it on social media as well and asked people to do the same. But nobody took it seriously, ab mahaul bahut kharab hai. Now, I have again started requesting people to donate plasma. It is necessary for the betterment of the situation.”
The actor, who is currently shooting in Dehradun, says that they are taking all the necessary precautions on set. “There aren’t many people here, the crew makes sure to wear masks, shields and PPE kits and sabka COVID test hota hai har do-teen din ke baad. Though it’s risky for actors because we have to remove masks in front of the camera, kaam bhi zaroori hai. And right now, we need money to save people. Logon ke pass hospitals mein jaane ke paise nahi hain. And even on the set, there are a lot of people who need money. Hum do saal ke liye ghar par toh nahi baith sakte hain. Work is also important.”
While in Dehradun, the actor has been visiting hospitals and meeting doctors. “People told me that it’s not safe to go to hospitals right now, but I had to go to see the situation. While I’m taking care of my safety I feel it’s also important to make sure that others are safe. My team and I are tying up with multiple hospitals across the country and trying to provide beds to them. I have requested a few of my businessmen friends to help me financially in this. I want to save as many lives as I can,” he says.
Gurmeet’s efforts have got him praise from all quarters. He says, “I don’t think anything can make me happier than this. I got a call from Varanasi on Wednesday at 2 am, the person needed help to shift his sister to a Delhi hospital. I told him that aapki behen, meri behen hai, aur uski help karna mera farz hai. I called up a few people and helped them shift her. I want to bring a ripple effect of change. I want people to help each other. Adopt a patient if you can and if you can’t, share the patient’s details with me, tag me on social media. Let’s all come together and help each other in these trying times.”
Gurmeet Choudhary follows in the footsteps of Sonu Sood; helps people through the pandemic

Rishabh Suri (HINDUSTAN TIMES; April 23, 2021)
Following in the footsteps of Sonu Sood, who has been helping people throughout the Covid pandemic, is actor Gurmeet Choudhary. He has made it official on his social media handles by writing, “I really want to help every1 of u in such curial time pls feel free to reach out to me I will try my best to help as many as I can @SonuSood bhai thank u for inspiring me.” (sic)
He tells us the numerous messages he received on social media compelled him to start this. “For the last couple of days, people started asking me for help on Twitter. As an actor, you have powers. I tweeted and it was a big responsibility and commitment from my side. It’s my duty to help them. Of course, you can’t help everyone, so I assembled a team and circulated a number. I am personally talking to people,” he says.
The 37-year-old says Sonu’s extraordinary efforts set an example. “I have worked with him in the film Paltan. Jab ek messiah inspire karta hai, aapko kuchh bada, unke level ka karna padhta hai. I challenged myself. The situation is bad. I haven’t slept for the past four-five days, and been up talking to people. People panic as well. Someone messaged at two in the night. I saw it, and called the person ‘Aapki sister meri sister ho gayi’. In these times, nothing is about religion or differences. If I can motivate someone through this, what can be better than that?,” says the actor.
We ask him if he is only limiting himself to people needing help with the Coronavirus situation, or is he helping them in other aspects too. Choudhary says, “Right now, Covid is the biggest problem. The maximum problems are for beds, oxygen cylinders, so that is our priority. Ab main peechhe nahi hatne wala. This movement will go a lot far. I have been calling hospitals and telling them it is for my family, and not social media followers. After Covid too, our team will keep working, because people will need jobs too.”

Gurmeet-Debina open up about battling Covid-19 and why it’s vital to be mentally stable at this time
Nishad Neelambaran (HINDUSTAN TIMES; October 15, 2020)
It was on September 30 that Gurmeet Choudhary and Debina Bonnerjee tested positive for Coronavirus. The couple, along with Bonnerjee’s parents, who also tested positive, has recovered after a span of two weeks. “The last 14 days felt like it was 14 years of vanvas. Debina and I had a lot of symptoms and we had thought since we are so much into fitness and follow a strict diet, we would probably have no symptoms. Initial three-four days were difficult,” Gurmeet tells us.
Debina, who is “extremely happy” to have tested negative now, is thankful that though her parents tested positive at the same time, they were both asymptomatic. “As Gurmeet and I were extremely unwell initially, we decided to get my parents tested as well. They tested positive, but were asymptomatic. Hence, they looked much fitter than Gurmeet and I, and that feeling helped us mentally,” she says.
Gurmeet, 36, admits it is important to be mentally stable during this period. “There were quite a few medicines given, and we used to sleep for about 17 to 18 hours a day. Besides, mentally, you feel a lot of pressure. You get to see a lot of negative news about the pandemic everywhere. But, we kept ourselves motivated,” he asserts.
On experiencing a strange sense of confusion while recovering, Debina says, “They say there is a certain kind of brain fog that happens during Covid-19, and I showed all of those symptoms (laughs). I was talking, and the next day, I would forget I said it. When you are in the moment, you don’t understand it, but when the confusion goes away in your brain, you realise the action wasn’t normal.”
The couple is, however, thankful that they were “all together” in this difficult phase. “Family thi saath me toh survive kar liya,” Gurmeet adds.
Ask what they have to say to people not following SOPs and Debina, 37, says, “In India, people don’t see and learn, they face it and then learn. Jab tak saare population ko nahi ho jata and 20% population nahi rahega, tab tak log nahi seekhenge. It is extremely serious, I don’t understand why people cannot get it.”

After each scene I’d gargle and take in steam. It’s a new world now-Gurmeet Choudhary

TV’s Ram, Gurmeet Choudhary is headed to Jaipur to shoot for a film amidst the Coronavirus pandemic; now is set for a road trip with wife Debina
Akash Bhatnagar (MUMBAI MIRROR; September 24, 2020)
Gurmeet Choudhary who made the transition from TV to films with Khamoshiyan in 2015, returned to the small screen with reruns of his old shows, including Ramayan, during the lockdown. “I used to think that the shelf life of a daily soap ended once it went off air, but this lockdown has proved otherwise. To survive in this business, you have to be visible and I’d been lucky,” he says, admitting that playing Ram at 21 is a proud feat. “Every actor has that one project they are always remembered by, and in my 10 years in the industry, it’s been Ramayan.”
He is quick to concede that he was getting typecast and only getting offers for mythologicals after that. That’s what led him to films. On September 17, the actor got back from Jaipur after wrapping up his next film, The Wife, his first as a solo lead. He admits it wasn’t easy shooting in the midst of a pandemic. “During rehearsals I’d wear a mask and during shots I had to take it off. But I kept it on me instead of handing it to someone else. I couldn’t interact with people much on the set. After each scene I’d gargle and take in steam. It’s a new world now,” he shares, adding that shooting outside Mumbai is safer. “We all got tested in the city and on August 16, left for Jaipur, where we were tested again. Six days after everyone tested negative, we went on the set. We had our own cook and there was no outside contact.”
Back home, alerted by the Covid-19 scares in his building, his wife Debina Bonnerjee and he work out every day and do breathing exercises. “When I left for the shoot, I didn’t inform my mother as she would have been concerned. When she read about it, she screamed at me. My producer, Shariq Patel, had told me if I wanted, they would delay the shoot, but we agreed that if we went forward, others might follow,” he avers.
Gurmeet credits the TV industry for instilling confidence in filmmakers. “Debina had been shooting for her show for about a month now and we got to see how things could be done,” he says, confiding that he himself was inspired by his better half.
He lauds his late friend Sushant Singh Rajput for paving the way for TV stars to graduate to films. “He proved that TV stars can be movie stars too. After him, there was a search for the next star from TV and producers started approaching me, and now big producers are offering me work,” reminisces the actor who was last seen in Paltan, set against the backdrop of the Indo-China war. “Back then, people saw Pakistan as our only enemy, but this year, China has emerged as a real threat, too. Even the people on set told me that they saw the film recently. I wish they had seen it two years ago but that’s the magic of cinema, you never know when or how you will get your due,” says Gurmeet, who now wants to do at least two films a year. “I’m a trained dancer and a gymnast, and I want to explore dance and action in films. For now, though, the biwi is planning a road trip to Goa.”
When you don't have a filmy background, you can't be choosy-Gurmeet Choudhary

Neha Maheshwri (BOMBAY TIMES; April 3, 2017)
He is the quintessential
Sooraj Barjatya's Prem on TV, but in films, Gurmeet Choudhary has always
played a casanova. This time, though, he is doing a family entertainer
- Laali Ki Shaadi Mein Laaddoo Deewana - purely for his fans. Ahead of the
film's release, BT catches up with the actor for a candid chat
about breaking away from the erotic hero image in Bollywood, working
with star kids and fatherhood. Excerpts...
Are you looking at Laali Ki Shaadi... as an opportunity to break away from the image created by your previous erotic thrillers?
On television, people pictured me as Prem, which Salman Khan has been known as. Whenever people met me, they'd say that they wanted a husband like me for their daughter. But in movies, you don't have a choice. Wajah Tum Ho and Khamoshiyan weren't the kind of films my fans would have liked to see me in. Many said that they couldn't watch those films with their families. They wanted to see me romancing and dancing. So, when I heard Laali Ki Shaadi's script, I knew it's a character my fans would love and it is impactful as well.
You said your fans couldn't watch your previous films with their families. Given a choice, would you have chosen your career differently?
Not at all. Where I am today is a dream for so many people. When you don't have a filmy background, you can't be choosy. But yes, in the process, I declined some movies, too. I believe that you get work because of your previous projects. If I sit back and think that I want to do only a big-banner film, I would just be waiting.
How comfortable were you working alongside star kids in the film?
I have done too much work on TV and have also done a couple of films to be intimidated by star kids. I am a silent person on the set; I am respectful of other actors, but am not inhibited by them. Akshara (Haasan) and Vivaan (Shah) are simple and good actors. They were very grounded and we had fun on the sets. I used to tell Akshara that I have been a great fan of Kamal Haasan ever since I watched Chachi 420. Similarly, I would talk about Naseeruddin Shah with Vivaan.
In recent days, we have seen nepotism in Bollywood being a topic of discussion. What's your take on it?
The industry is ready to help if you are talented and hard-working. I agree that it's easier for a star kid to enter Bollywood, but that brings along with it a huge responsibility. They have to meet the standards set by their family. As an outsider, I don't have to face that pressure.
You recently adopted two girls - Pooja and Lata - from your hometown...
I am a big fan of Superman; he has the power to do nice things for human beings. We can also do the same using our power as a celebrity. Debina and I were thinking of adopting a kid since a long time. It finally happened last year after we discussed it with our parents. We have planned everything for them very carefully. I think it's just a start because people keep talking about women empowerment, but nobody takes any steps. I think I have done the right thing and hope people will follow it.
When are you bringing them to Mumbai?
That will need planning as such decisions can't be taken overnight. The girls come from a rural background, so bringing them here immediately will be a cultural shock for them. We are focussing on their education right now. We will do everything according to their comfort. We have not set a specific time frame because that will be put pressure on them. Similarly, there is no pressure on them to take my surname either. They call us Gurmeet and Debina, so we are friends. In today's time, the relationship between parents and kids should be that of friends. So, I don't mind them addressing me by my name. Debina and I talk to them every day. My life has changed after adopting them. I have the responsibility of looking after them.
Do you plan to have a biological kid anytime soon?
We haven't thought about it because we are busy in our careers. We haven't done any family planning and will take the step when we are ready.

Actor to guide female users and fans in basic martial arts techniques
Manishaa R (DNA; March 8, 2017)
Gurmeet Choudhary will launch a self-defense app exclusively for women in distress. The actor dedicated the app to his female fans and said, “I’m advocating safety through martial arts. I want to ensure that they take positive steps to protect themselves when caught in tricky situations.”
He admits it was the rising incidents of crime against women that prompted him to come up with the idea. “We all know what happened during New Year’s Eve when young girls were mocked at, molested and abused at public places. I was shocked and saddened by the plight of those defenseless young girls,” he said.
The decision to launch such an app came about when he met a group of young girls and social activists while on a visit to Hyderabad, “They were aware that I had a fan base of young girls and that I was well-versed in martial arts. They were researching on the topic and looking for various measures to curb the rising crime rate against young girls,” he revealed.
He demonstrated some basic self-defense techniques that young girls could use when caught in difficult situations, “I further suggested that we come out with this interactive app, whereby I could demonstrate these techniques, where young girls could easily react if someone tried to grip their hand, hold their neck, attack them from behind or tried to snatch their wallet. They could learn all this sitting in the comfort of their homes. These techniques are taught to every girl in China in their schools, but unfortunately in India, we have no such education,” he said.
The actor has begun shooting for the app and plans to release it within a month, “I want all my female fans to avail of it. I want them to stand strong and confident, ready to take on the world,” he said.
All for women
Last month, Gurmeet visited the CISF headquarters in Mumbai and spent time with the jawans, highlighting the issue of women safety. A couple of days ago, he and his wife Debina Bonnerjee announced their decision to adopt two orphaned girls from Patna, after which they pledged to take complete responsibility for their education and well-being.
I am not competing with Emraan Hashmi and I don't aspire for his serial kisser tag-Gurmeet Choudhary

Neha Maheshwri Bhagat (BOMBAY TIMES; November 28, 2016)
His second film Wajah Tum Ho
(WTH), hap pens to be cut from the same cloth as his Bollywood debut,
Khamoshiyan. However, that doesn't bother actor Gurmeet Choudhary, who
believes that he can't be confined to any particular genre. From
mythological soaps to masala films, he's at home everywhere. As
television's Lord Ram gears up for yet another bold outing, BT caught up
with him for a quick chat about his journey so far - in real and on
reel. Excerpts...
This is your second film in the erotic genre. Do you worry that you will be offered a similar genre repeatedly?
If the film had been just about sex, I wouldn't have done it. I have been part of thrillers with erotic songs. So, I don't mind if they slot WTH in the erotic genre. Typecast hone ke liye bhi aukaat chahiye. If I am typecast, it means that I am doing a swell job in that genre. Many people crave for that. Also, I know how to break away from a mould just like I did after playing Lord Ram. People would touch my feet and make offerings, but I went on to play intense characters after that. If that couldn't stop me, nothing else can. I am getting offers, which are not erotic. It has to register first that an actor is hero material; then, work follows.
Among the people who switched from TV to big screen, Sushant Singh Rajput has done well for himself. The others have bagged roles mostly in the horror-erotic genres, not leaving much of a mark...
I know Sushant because of Ankita (Lokhande, Sushant's ex-girlfriend). He did a great job in his last film and I congratulated him. I appreciate jab aap zero se hero bante ho. Having said that, I can't copy him and follow his path. Mujhe lakeer ka fakeer nahi banna. My path is different from that of my contemporaries. I would also like to take up diverse projects, but that doesn't mean that I won't work if I am not getting the kind of roles I desire. Aisa na ho ki time hi nikal jaaye. A hit film is more important than the genre.
After a two-hero project (Khamoshiyan), your new film has three heroes. Shouldn't you have waited for a solo-hero movie?
We can't judge one's talent by the number of scenes in a film. A great actor can leave viewers spellbound in just one scene. And then, there are people who can't do justice to even a full-length role. In this film, every character is pivotal. Also, there is a lot at stake in a solo-hero project. God forbid if the film flops, I will have to shoulder the entire responsibility even if I have acted brilliantly. Of course, if there is a solo-hero project I can do justice to, I will take it up.
Many faces are launched every Friday. Does that mean more pressure for actors like you?
Whenever a new face is launched, I work extra hours at the gym, and learn a few more gymnastic moves and stunts (laughs). In hindsight, I also feel motivated to work harder and learn from their strengths.
Recently, social media was abuzz with talks about your kissing scenes in WTH. Some even compared you to Emraan Hashmi...
I am glad people are talking about my bold sequences. Koi bhi mare hue kutte ko laat nahi maarta hai. We have achieved what we wanted, which was to create a buzz around the film. People might throng theatres believing this is just an erotic thriller, but they will walk out praising the content. Talking about the comparisons to Emraan, I am not competing with him and don't aspire for his serial kisser tag. I am trying to create my own space and style.
Is it true that Debina (his wife) was upset with your intimate scenes in WTH? There were even rumours that you guys had a huge showdown during your trip to Sri Lanka?
It feels nice to be written about, but sometimes, small things are blown out of proportion. Though Debina and I are accustomed to such rumours, our families get affected. She knows that I am just playing a character. We have our share of fights like any other couple, but ours get highlighted as we are actors. I am prepared for worse stories in the future (laughs!).
How easy is it for you to get intimate with a co-actor?
I dread retakes while shooting for such scenes. My only concern is that it shouldn't look vulgar. I would have opted out of the film if it hadn't looked classy. I am extremely shy. I didn't even confess love to Debina before marriage. One night, while talking to her on the phone, she finally asked me if I wanted to tell her that I love her and I replied that's exactly what I wanted to tell her.
Your father is a retired Army officer. How much did he support you in your aspirations?
I come from a small village in Bihar, where there wasn't even proper power supply. My parents didn't support me at all. They wanted me to become a doctor or an engineer, but I made it clear that I wanted to be an actor. My father didn't have money to support my endeavours, so it was friends who helped me with money, food and clothing. I haven't forgotten my days of struggle. There was a time when I shared a small room with 15 boys. There was so little space that if I wanted to turn over while sleeping, I had to inform others. I still visit those places. Earlier, producers and directors would bow down to the whims and fancies of an actor, but not anymore. You won't get a second chance if you are not disciplined and diligent. Given my army background, discipline has been ingrained in me. I always reach before time for the shoot.

Every time I walk across the road, girls sing out to me Wajah Tum Ho's title track-Gurmeet Choudhary

The Khamoshiyan actor, best known for his portrayal of Lord Rama in the mythological, Ramayan, adds that his real life persona is different from the image he has lately acquired
Manishaa R (DNA; November 23, 2016)
Gurmeet Choudhary reveals that he is shy of women and wasn’t exactly comfortable shooting the passionate scenes with Sana Khan in Wajah Tum Ho. He says, “The chemistry no doubt looks natural, but it’s a reflection of my acting skills. Irrespective of how uncomfortable I felt, what matters is how perfectly natural it looks on screen. As far as I know, Sana was equally tense. Yet, Sana and I finished the lip-locks and the passionate kisses all in one take. It is good that we make a great pair on screen and the credit goes to director Vishal Pandya.”
The Khamoshiyan actor, best known for his portrayal of Lord Rama in the mythological, Ramayan, adds that his real life persona is different from the image he has lately acquired, “To be honest, I have never been the outgoing kind who gets cozy with girls. I have always been a shy person and that hasn’t changed. Debina was my only girlfriend before marriage and she was the only one I proposed to. It took me a lot of courage to even confess my love to Debina.”
However, Gurmeet feels thrilled with the kind of compliments he has been lately getting from girls, “With the title track trending, every time I walk across the road, girls sing out to me.” So, doesn’t all this play havoc in his married life as is widely speculated? The actor smiles, “That’s where I and Debina differ from most other married couples. Both of us sit down with the script of every film before I go ahead. She knows that the one she is seeing on screen is Ranveer Bajaj of Wajah Tum Ho. She never thinks about these love-making scenes and we don’t even discuss them. I won’t be surprised if people now start speculating that our relationship is in trouble because all these things do not make a difference to Debina.”
The actor maintains that he is just as much madly in love with his wife, Debina, five years after he got married to her, “It will be difficult for others to understand the relationship we share. Debina is my support system. I hail from a small village in Bihar, where there are millions of star aspirants. It was my dream to become a star, but now both of us share the dream. I owe my sucess to her,” he said.
I am happy being my wife Debina Bonnerjee's slave-Gurmeet Choudhary

Gurmeet Choudhary refutes rumours of trouble in paradise and claims that he has no life without wife, Debina
Letty Mariam Abraham (MID-DAY; November 20, 2016)
He was known as the 'Greek God' of Indian television and was popular for his bare body entry scenes on television. Continuing the streak on the 70mm screen, Gurmeet Choudhary claims that before Khamoshiyan no one wanted to touch him and how the film opened doors for him in Bollywood. He talks about his lifeline – Debina Bonnerjee, his upcoming film Wajah Tum Ho and more.
Were you happy with your blink and miss debut in Mahesh Bhatt’s Khamoshiyan?
I don’t have a background in films, I hail from a small town and was a television actor. Because TV supported me, I became a star overnight. I’ve done all the big hit shows you can think of. My career has been great, but it’s still difficult to get a break in Bollywood. In that case, Khamoshiyan opened the door of Bollywood for me. Before that, no one was ready to touch me. My debut got me my second film Wajah Tum Ho, which is being directed by Vishal Pandya. In my next film, people will get to see a lot more of me.
Why did you choose an erotic thriller for your second film?
Why not? As an actor, I see two things – who is the producer and the director. A good name increases your confidence. Vishal has given hits like Hate Story 2 and 3. His film’s content was powerful, and what more can an actor as for. When he told me the whole concept of the film, it excited me. Most films are good till the interval, post that, the storyline goes for a toss. However, this film will keep you at the edge of your seats till the end.
There have been several Hollywood films with the concept of live screening of murders. So what’s so new about Wajah Tum Ho?
See, I cannot reveal the whole story, but the screenplay, dialogues are powerful and it is backed by logic. The twists and turns will be unexpected and every time you predict something it will be very different.
Do you fear being type cast as an erotic thriller actor?
The position I am in right now, is the aspiration of many people in the world. Whatever I am (I am not saying I am big), but it’s a place that many want to reach. I have never feared being typecast. Being typecast is also an achievement. If I really feared that, I would never have done a show like Ramayan. The show was a huge success so much so that people actually worshiped me and put money at my feet. So many people have done mythological shows, and they get stuck in that zone. I feel I have managed to alter my image so many times. After Ramayan, people fell in love with Maan Singh Khurana (His character in Geet Huyi Sabse Parayi), and then I did a lot of reality shows. There has to be some talent to even get type cast, right? If I can get out of the image of Ram at the age of 23 then why would I be scared of it now.
Are comfortable doing erotic thrillers?
If this movie was something like the Hate Story series it would have been called Hate Story 4. But that’s not the case. The scenes between Sana and me depict our love on screen, which is normal and goes with the story. Our film is not about sex. It’s a masala film and is a complete package.
Between Khamoshiyan and Wajah Tum Ho — how many offers did you get and how many did you reject?
I did reject two films with some big names and trust me had I given a nod for it, my career would have been over. I can’t say ‘no’ easily, but today I feel I made the right decision. I’ve never made an impromptu plan. My journey since 2008 (Ramayan days) has been planned meticulously. I have my goals etched on my bathroom mirror. I know I want to work with Rajkumar Hirani and Rohit Shetty some day. And if they say I have to run naked and reach their Bandra office right now, I’ll do it without a second thought. That’s how my planning works.
But your marriage was not on the list, right?
Debina and I were barely 18-19 when we got married. Some things you cannot plan. But I can confidently say that without Debina I would have never been successful.
Why do most people feel that she is the dominating one in your relationship?
I’ve never heard this before. But I’d say this, if with my wife dominating me I could reach here then it is a good thing. I want to be her ‘joru ka ghulam’ (My ‘wife’s slave). If a small town boy from Bihar can reach where I am now – it’s all because of Debina. She has supported me through everything. It was my dream to be a star and post marriage it became her dream too. My life is incomplete without her.
Then why did we hear all these rumours about your fights and that you and Debina were heading towards splitsvile?
As an actor, you have to face these things on a daily basis and it is not the first time. Whenever I get a script to act, Debina and I both read the script together and decide. When I was rehearsing for Wajah Tum Ho, Debina would give me the cues and pracice the dialogues with me. So how would she not know what I am doing in the film? Having said that, I am sure, if not, the the story would have been, ‘Why is Debina not affected by my intimate scenes? Is there nothing left between them?’ We’ve gone way beyond people’s imagination in our relationship.
Do you get tired justifying your relationship with Debina?
I am not tired but I feel bad, mainly because my family is from a small town. We may not get affected by what people say, but for them these things matter. So when they hear news like that, they call to find out if everything is okay. Just a few days ago back my folks called to find out if everything is okay in our life.
One television actress you want to work with again.
I would say Kratika Sengar. She is a good actor, down to earth and extremely talented.
One actress you don’t want to work with?
There’s no one like that. Given an opportunity I’d work with all of them again. Even Drashti Dhami, because we heard that you’ll don’t get along anymore. If there is work for us together, we’ll work. Why not?
Any plans to build the family ahead?
I love kids but we are so busy right now trying to build our careers. Plus we feel we are still kids and have a lot of growing up to do. So, we will be waiting a bit more for family planning.

Gurmeet Choudhary on his tryst with the city that gave him recognition and success
Chaya Unnikrishnan (DNA; August 12, 2016)
Gurmeet Choudhary, a TV hottie, made his transition
to films with Khamoshiyaan last year. Known for his portrayal of Ram in
the second TV version of Ramayan, Gurmeet went on to deliver
back-to-back hit shows with Geet Hui Sabse Parayi and Punar Vihah. He
was the winner of Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa 5 and was last seen in adventure
show I Can Do That. Currently, he is shooting for his second film Wajah
Tum Ho.
Gurmeet came to Mumbai 13 years ago with the determination of becoming an actor. After taking a course in acting he did bit roles even if that meant he had only one line to say, in several serials, before he bagged Ramayan. And as he says, “Mauke pe chauka maara!” Here, the actor who came from Jabalpur, talks about his incredible journey and how Mumbai made it possible.
Tryst with Mumbai
"The first time I came to Mumbai was for my tenth board exams. At that time, I just gave my exams and went back. The second time I came here was to join Shiamak Davar’s dance academy. I was in Mumbai for three months and stayed at Navy Nagar where my father, who was in the army had managed to get me accommodation. It was my childhood dream to become an actor and I had to keep convincing my dad about it. In fact, that was the reason he let me join Shiamak’s class and see how I could manage in Mumbai. When I sat in the train to go back to Jabalpur after the dance course, was the day I decided I will return to Mumbai to become an actor. I felt ‘ab koi nahi rok sakta mujhe’. Then I joined an acting course which lasted for one-and-a-half years"
First impression
"During my dance class itself, I felt Mumbai mein kuch toh baat hai. There’s this energy and vibe in the city that calls you. And if you are talented and willing to work hard, this city will give you a chance. Not just in the field of acting, but in anything that you want to do"
Struggle for survival
"When I came in 2003, accommodation was a big problem. I was from a middle-class background and had a lot of financial problems. My father had to break a fixed deposit to pay money to the acting institute and also take care of my daily expenses. However, the guys who were with me at the institute thought I was a khandaani rich guy because I looked like that! But when they got to know my status they helped me out. After the training got over, it was only because of my friends that I could stay for one-and-a-half year in Mumbai"
Most helpful city
"The good thing about Mumbai are its people. If you fall on the road many people will come and help you. Since my father used to work in the army I have been all over India, and must say Mumbaikars are the most helpful people. If you are lost and ask for directions five people will offer to show you the right way. In other cities people will be bored or just do timepass"
Friends forever
"The friends I made nine years ago are still with me. It is important to have close friends otherwise you won’t realise what you are doing is right or wrong. My closest friend is Romanch Mehta who bluntly tells me whether my performance is good or bad. I always take his suggestions. Vijay Bhatia is another close friend"
Three things I love about Mumbai
"One is the positivity in the city. Also, there’s a strange energy here that supports you agar tum shiddat se kaam karo. Mumbai is your friend when you are alone. I have seen so many people sitting all by themselves at Juhu beach and Gateway of India watching the sea. It gives you company and peace"
Monsoons in Mumbai
"Monsoon is the best part of Mumbai. There’s magic and fun in the Mumbai showers. I love the sound of raindrops and always keep my window open. I drive with my wife Debina to Lonavala, which is beautiful in the rains"
What I want to change about Mumbai
"The roads are bad, especially during monsoon. Now, I consider Mumbai as my city and just like I am proud of my house I am proud of it. So, when friends come visiting sochna padta hai which would be a better road to drive. That’s sad"
Fav haunts/restaurants
"My all-time favourite restaurant is the Taj Hotel in Colaba. When I had come down the second time to Mumbai it was my dream to see Taj. Me and my dad decided to go inside the hotel and roam around. Dad had his I-card so nobody stopped us. I had told him, there will come a time when I’ll bring you and we will have dinner here. And it happened. Now going there with my father or my wife is routine. That’s what this city has given me. Earlier I felt intimidated in the hotel, but now people recgonise me and take pictures.
Another favourite haunt is Juhu beach. When I want to walk alone I go there between 7-8 pm. Even the lanes of Versova where I stayed in my early days are close to my heart. I keep going there time and again just to feel nostalgic"
I used to practice kick-boxing on my brother-Gurmeet Choudhary

From playing Ram on television to being the bad guy in Khamoshiyan, Gurmeet Choudhary has had a rather impressive rise to stardom over the last eight years. Below is an excerpt from an interview
Noyon Parasara (BOMBAY TIMES; March 11, 2016)
Was it your childhood dream to be a Bollywood star?
Yes! I was so filmi that I was called Shashi Kapoor at home. Like they say, when someone wishes for something passionately, it works out. A small town guy like me coming this far is proof of that. Till date, my friends call me by that name. My elder brother is called Raj Kapoor. My family is a fan of the Kapoor family!
So, who are you a bigger fan of - Shashi Kapoor or Shah Rukh Khan?
I have an emotional connect with Shashi Kapoor for obvious reasons. But Shah Rukh Khan is an inspiration. When I was new in Mumbai, I used to feel low and wonder if dreams actually come true. I used go to Bandra and look at SRK's bungalow. Just looking at it would give me the strength to work harder. I always express my love for him whenever possible. When my wife told him that I am his fan, he said that he knows about it.
Your wedding with Debina was rather filmi. Tell us about it...
We got married before Ramayan happened. We got officially wedded in 2011 but we had actually got married in a temple much earlier in a rather filmi way. A few friends were a part of the ceremony and our families did not know. We hid it from the world as I wanted to do an official wedding when I was capable of fulfilling every wish of Debina.
You worked with Debina in Ramayan, Fear Factor: Khatron Ke Khiladi, Nach Baliye and Khamoshiyan. We believe you want her to be a part of all your films?
She has been extremely lucky for me. My life changed after she came into it. So, I always ask her to be involved in some way in whatever I do. Even if it is just for a fleeting appearance!
How did your career change after Khamoshiyan?
Now people consider me a part of the film industry and I get offers accordingly. It is my prerogative if I want to do a film or not. So, my career has started all over again and I am working harder than ever.
Kickboxing has been a part of your life since you were a kid. Did you ever beat anyone just to show off what you learnt?
Oh, I have beaten up my elder brother many times (laughs). But I was very protective of him in school and picked up fights with anyone who would bully him.
Tell us about your next Laali Ki Shaadi Mein Laaddoo Deewana...
It is a brilliant script and also stars Akshara Haasan and Vivaan Shah. My fans will see me in an avatar they will like.
You were nominated at the Filmfare Awards this year...
I am lucky that I was nominated for my very first film. I have left space on my awards wall at home, just for a Filmfare Award. This time I was nominated, soon I hope to win it. The empty space motivates me.

Gurmeet Choudhary became a
popular name with his very first serial Ramayan. In his teleseries Geet
Hui Sabse Parayi, he got the lovely ladies swooning over his stubble
look and chiselled body. Punar Vivah, his next show, was a hot favourite
amongst the audience, and following the success of that, reality shows
like Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa 5 and Khatron Ke Khiladi 5 made Gurmeet a sought
after face on TV.
After a successful stint on the small screen, Gurmeet ventured into Bollywood with Khamoshiyan. He will soon be seen in his second film Laali Ki Shaadi Mein Laaddoo Deewana. He excitedly says, “It's a comedy in which I play a prince. I can't divulge any more details but I can tell you that I'm doing something that my fans will enjoy watching. I'm eagerly waiting for its release.“
He credits his wife Debina Bonnerjee for all the success, “She has been my pillar of strength and has supported me in all my decisions. I discuss my work with her at length and her clarity of thought has always helped me choose good roles,“ he says.
Gurmeet is a self-confessed fitness junkie. Staying fit has always been his priority and it gives him an irresistible high. “I make sure that I take time out to exercise. I regularly practice kick-boxing, gymnastics, yoga, swimming and dancing to stay fit. Even when I am holidaying, I don't miss my workouts. In the worst case scenario, if I miss my gym class, I walk up to my home which is on the 25th floor,“ he emphasises.
The actor, who came to Mumbai as a 19-year-old boy with big dreams of becoming a film actor, has moulded himself for the silver screen, “I don't come from a filmi background, so when I landed in Mumbai, I was a bit lost and had no one to guide me. One day I managed to meet Yash Chopra and he advised me to do television. He said Shah Rukh Khan is the best example and he explained, 'SRK started his career as a TV actor. Why don't you also do TV shows and make a name for yourself, and then gradually move to films'. That's how I started doing serials and there has been no looking back ever since.“
Quiz Gurmeet if he will get back to television and he says, “I won't be able to a daily soap because of time constraints, but if there is a finite series and I have an interesting role, then I can think about it. TV is a huge medium and it has made me who I am today .“
Talking about his future plans he says, “I am really enjoying this phase in my career. I am being a little choosy when it comes to my work and I don't want to rush and take any wrong decisions. Quality work has always been my priority. I don't want to set any boundaries; I would like to work with different directors and actors.“

Gurmeet Choudhary has a
hectic schedule ahead. The actor has signed up for a reality show that
kicks off this month and soon, he will also begin shooting for his next
film. He admits that multitasking will be a real challenge, but he feels
that though it is difficult, it is not impossible.
“I am what I am because of the small screen. In India, television is a wide-reaching medium. It gave me my debut film, Khamoshiyan. Mahesh Bhatt's wife Soni Razdan was my fan when I did daily soaps. I want to be the first actor who smartly juggles between TV and films, like they do in the West,“ says Gurmeet, adding, “Hollywood is more homogeneous, where subject takes precedence over medium. I inspire myself by believing that if Amitabh Bachchan and Shah Rukh Khan can manage both TV and films, why can't I?“ The double whammy will be physically exhausting for him, but he is bracing up for an exciting ride. He says, “I train for at least seven hours every day. I regularly practise gymnastics, kick-boxing, swimming and dancing to stay fit.So, physical fatigue won't get to me.“
Quiz him about his next movie and he says he can't divulge anything about it. “But I can tell you that it'll give me a chance to work with the stars I've grown up idolising. The first leg will be shot outside Mumbai. It would've been easier if I didn't have outstation schedules, as I would have moved easily between sets. But luckily, my producers have been very supportive. In fact, the stuntmen from the reality show will train me in fire acts and other stunts for the film as well,“ says the actor.

Actor reacts to director’s barb hurled after he quit the film
Subhash K Jha (DNA; June 11, 2015)
Hate Story 3 director Vishal Pandya has gone on record
to state that he decided to drop Gurmeet Choudhary in favour of Sharman
Joshi because the film needed a performer.
Gurmeet reacts sharply, “I don’t know what sort of a performer they are looking for. But I seemed to fit their bill pretty well until recently. Suddenly, I am a non-performer just because I couldn’t adjust my dates according to their requirements?”
Gurmeet controls his indignation and says, “It’s unfair to pull an actor down just because he is unable to do your film. I could not do Hate Story 3 as I have another film lined up during the same period. People can say what they like. I am too busy building my career and physique to be bothered by what anyone is saying.”
Gurmeet’s film debut in Khamoshiyan fizzled out. But he is unfazed. “I’ve a lot to do, lots to achieve as an actor. It’s sad that instead of encouraging me some elements are trying to pull me down. I don’t get angry. I have my kickboxing and martial arts to keep me calm.”

Popular TV actor Gurmeet Choudhary talks about his debut film Khamoshiyan and more
Chaya Unnikrishnan (DNA; December 20, 2014)
With his very first serial Ramayan, Gurmeet Choudhary became a popular name. His next Geet Hui Sabse Parayi had the girls swooning over his stubbled look and ripped body. Punar Vivah established him as the silent romantic hero. Three serials, threee hits. Not to mention reality shows like Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa in which he emerged the winner and Khatron ke Khiladi 5 that saw him at his adventurous best. Clearly, Gurmeet who came to Mumbai as a 19-year-old boy with dreams of becoming a film actor, had moulded himself into the perfect Bolly hero. And, now having signed a three-film deal with Vishesh Films, Gurmeet is ready with his debut film Khamoshiyan. Here the actor talks about his journey and his dream coming true.
Did you always want to be a film actor?
Of course. I hail from an army background and I came to Mumbai with the dream of becoming an film actor. But since I had nobody from films in my family, I was a bit lost. One day I managed to meet Yash Chopra. It was he who guided me to do TV. I was 18-19 years old then and Yashji gave me the example of Shah Rukh Khan. He said, 'SRK se bada example kya hai. He has come from TV. Why don't you also do TV and make a name for yourself there first'. That's how I started doing serials.
You have done three serials and all have been hits..
Yes. I was determined to approach every role that I did with earnestness and put 200 per cent efforts into it. I worked on my look, body, body language, character, etc. My motto was no matter how many shows I do, I should look different in every one of them. People should be able to identify which serial just by my look. Accordingly when I played Ram, I worked on my physique to make it a little bulky because he was a king. I grew my hair long, and as Ram is antaryami, one who know what will happen in the future he is always calm and composed. I worked on getting a serene smile, that was a part of Ram. For my role as Maan in Geet Huyi Sabse Parayi, I grew a stubble, and got a lean look. Maan was an arrogant business tycoon and my body language projected that. As Yash in Punarvivah I changed my looks again. Every serial I dealt with as though I am doing a film. That a producer or director may be watching the show was always at the back of my mind.
Is that how you finally got the film offer?
Yes, and I am grateful to Mukeshji's (Bhatt) wife for that. She had watched me in serials and for two years had been telling Mukeshji that I deserve to be in films and that he should give me a break. I met them once at an award function and said hello. That's when Mukeshji actually saw me. At another event in South Africa, I won the Best Actor award in TV, while Ranbir Kapoor was chosen the Best Actor in films. Mohit Suri gave me my trophy and Mukeshji congratulated me. Within a week, I got an offer from them. I was on cloud nine!
Every actor wants to make a film debut with love story. Didn't you have apprehensions in starting with a supernatural thriller Khamoshiyan?
Even when I was doing TV everybody would tell me that I should make my debut with Vishesh Films because they are known for their songs as well as story. They would say, 'Gaana hit hona chahiye then the actor lipsyncing to it also becomes a hit!' That apart, Khamoshiyan has romance, drama and performance. My character Jaidev Dharajgir is charming and as powerful as the name. And I think after Aashiqui 2 the music of Khamoshiyan will be a hit. Already people are raving about the title track. For years I was lipsyncing to others' songs and I would wonder mujhe mera gaana kab milega? When I had to lip sync for my first song in the film, it gave me a different kind of high and happiness.
You have proved yourself as a dancer with Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa. Were you always good at it?
I used to get prizes in school and at events. I was inspired by Shah Rukh Khan's energy and Govinda's style of dancing. But it was only after I did Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa that I learned different forms, Zumba, Rumba, Hiphop, etc. This is going to help me in my film career.
Will we see a different Gurmeet in Khamoshiyan?
Yes, I have worked on my physique because this required a slightly bulky body. In fact, I did a photoshoot experimenting with my hair and look! I am inspired by Amitabh Bachchan. He has done so many films, played so many characters but still looks fresh because he experimented. Same with Aamir Khan.
We heard that your wife Debina Bonnerjee has a cameo in Khamoshiyan. Is it true?
You will have to see the film for that. But yes I have promised her that she will be a part of all the films that I do.
Is she also looking at doing films?
Yes, and I support her completely. Right now she has taken a break, but something is in the offing.
Will you stop doing TV now that you have made the transition to films?
No. TV is home, I am not closed to it. Even today I attend TV events and perform on shows. I won't be able to do daily soaps because of time constraints, but if there is a finite series and I have an interesting role why not. TV is a huge medium. Even Amitji despite being so busy did a TV serial.
Several TV actors have made the transition to films but a very few have succeeded...
I believe one has to move smartly. I had also got several offers when I was doing serials, but I always wanted to debut with a big banner. That is very important. I have got a positive feedback for the trailer and soon will start the promotions. I am excited.
