(Crisp) Movie Review: GINNY WEDS SUNNY by FENIL SETA

Ginny Weds Sunny is a surprise of the season. The storyline is routine but the script is superb and the film is laced with many unique, entertaining moments. Newcomer Puneet Khanna’s direction is neat and uncomplicated and he keeps the pace of the film firmly in control. The 125-minute-long film is neither too slow nor too quick. The characters are well fleshed out and not just the leads, but even the supporting parts contribute very well to the madness. The film slips a bit in the second half and gets slightly predictable at places. Thankfully, the plusses outweigh the minuses. Talking of performances, Vikrant Massey is in a great form. This is his first lead role in a typical commercial film and he kills it! Yami Gautam gives yet another riveting performance. Her screen presence is amazing and here’s an actress who deserves to be seen in more and more films. Suhail Nayyar is dependable as always. Ayesha Mishra is adorable and this is surely one of her most memorable films! Rajiv Gupta too contributes brilliantly to the film’s entertainment quotient. Isha V Talwar, Mazel Vyas and Gurpreet Saini are fair. Talking of music, 'Sawan Mei Lag Gayi Aag' seems like an end-credit song but is very much a part of the film and enhances impact. All in all, Ginny Weds Sunny deserves a watch. Moreover, it is a clean film with no vulgarity and hence can also be seen with your family. Enjoy!
My rating - *** ½ out of 5!

Producer Vinod Bachchan is not a prominent name for many. But he has a major contribution as he was the producer of Tanu Weds Manu. He was the one who gave a new lease of life to director Aanand L Rai and also in a way gave the much-needed hit and author-backed role to Kangana Ranaut at a time when she was not getting her due in films. The producer, however, then slipped with back-to-back flops like Zila Ghaziabad and Jigariyaa. His last film was Shaadi Mein Zaroor Aana which was a theatrical flop but managed to do well on television.
And now he’s back with Ginny Weds Sunny. The name of the film obviously reminds one of Tanu Weds Manu. However, Tanu Weds Manu had a lot more buzz despite being a small budget flick. Ginny Weds Sunny, meanwhile, stars Yami Gautam and Vikrant Massey. The trailer is fun and can make for a nice, North-Indian based romcom. Dialogues especially seem witty. The film has got noticed thanks to the remix of the song ‘Saawan Mein Lag Gayi Aag’ which also features Badshah, Mika Singh and Neha Kakkar.
Ginny Weds Sunny would release on Netflix tomorrow. The decision has been a good one for Vinod Bachchan as reportedly, he has not only recovered the investment, but also made a neat profit. If it had released in cinemas, it might have bombed badly. That’s because the trailer, though nice, is not that exciting. Vikrant Massey is a fine actor but is sadly not a crowd puller. Same goes for Yami Gautam. Hence, the decision to release it on a streaming giant makes sense for the makers. If it manages to get audiences and make it to the top 10 trending list over the weekend, the job would be done for the film.
It's only now that writers, producers and directors finally see me as capable of shouldering a film-Vikrant Massey

I am not flying home to Chandigarh for my family's safety-Yami Gautam

Rachana Dubey (BOMBAY TIMES; June 6, 2020)
Before the lockdown, Yami Gautam was looking forward to moving into a new home in Chandigarh with her family. She was also on the verge of announcing three new films. In a conversation with BT, she spoke about being alone in Mumbai during the lockdown and why she isn’t in a hurry to fly back home, though we are now in the Unlock 1.0 phase. Excerpts:
You were busy completing your films and all set to announce new projects, when the lockdown was implemented. Was it a setback for you?
I like to see everything positively. I would have loved to tell the world about the three films that I had signed. I was busy with last-minute meetings on these projects. Since I couldn’t wrap up my work in time, I wasn’t able to go home. In times like these, you have to be patient. The financial and creative structures will go through a change, and I hope for the better. There will be apprehension in the air for a while and the industry will take some time to get over this.
Was it challenging to adapt to a new lifestyle, where you had to stay indoors for a long time?
I’ve inherently been an introvert and liked being indoors. Yes, I loved taking long walks in the open, which has not happened in a while. I miss that and also having my family around me. Other than that, life did not change so much. During the lockdown, I cooked, painted, read books, watched a movie or a show, did yoga and meditation. Though I am alone in Mumbai, I don’t feel lonely. I have my house help here at home with me. She’s from Jharkhand and she, like me, could not travel back home. So, we’ve been keeping each other company.
During such tough times, has it been difficult to live without your family?
It’s important to acknowledge that being alone in a city can get to anyone. It’s natural to complain about the situation, but we must also look around us and see what’s happening. We saw so many people walking long distances to reach home, not knowing where their next meal would come from. A lot of us don’t have to go through this and should be grateful for it. Acceptance is the only way to get through this positively.
Now that flight operations have resumed, do you plan to fly to Chandigarh to be with your family?
Though I cannot wait to be back in Chandigarh, I have two reasons to stay back in Mumbai. Primarily, it’s for my family’s safety. Right now, you have to be excessively cautious while travelling. Also, I have to finish the dubbing for my film, Ginny Weds Sunny. Once, I finish that I could think of going back. As for my house help, she prefers to be here because there have been Coronavirus cases in her village and travelling home is not advisable at the moment.
When it comes to beauty I believe, to each his own-Yami Gautam

Onkar Kulkarni (BOMBAY TIMES; November 3, 2019)
Films have kept her busy, but Yami Gautam, like her contemporaries, has a side business on her mind. The actress has a beautiful property in her hometown, Himachal Pradesh, which she says will lead to a ‘fruitful’ venture, quite literally. In a candid chat with BT, she spoke about her upcoming film, Bala, future plans and more. Excerpts from the chat:
You made your Bollywood debut with Ayushmann Khurrana in 2012 with Vicky Donor. Bala reunites the two of you. Has your equation changed? Have the two of you been in touch over the years? After Vicky Donor, we did a music video together. This time we have teamed up for a movie. We have been in touch, but wouldn’t communicate often, as we have been busy with our respective careers. However, when we met for Bala, the energy was the same as it was in our first film together. Only, earlier we used to hog on the sets, but this time around we were more in control (laughs!). The caterer on the sets of Vicky Donor was really good! We used to gorge on dal makhni, butter chicken, chicken tikka, malai kebab etc. Also, the guest house we were staying at, had a private cook. He knew we loved food and so he would excitedly tell us that he made special kadhi or crispy pakodas for us. You can see in Vicky Donor, how healthy we looked on the screen (laughs!). However, the Punjabiyat in him and the pahadiyat in me, when it comes to food, has taken a backseat now. Now, we are more fitness conscious.
Which parts of the country did you explore while shooting for Bala? Did you also relish some local cuisine, this time around?
Bala has been shot at places like Lucknow and Kanpur. I was a part of the Lucknow schedule where I enjoyed tunday kebab and chaat. They also had this amazing ice-cream, which was served in a patton (leaves) ka bowl; it’s a delicious pista-flavoured ice-cream, which you will find only at a local vendor’s shop. On my day off, I explored the city alone. I visited places like the Bara Imambara, Chota Imambara, and a museum. I also went to the market to buy the chikankari work, which was beautiful.
These days, many films are set and shot in the small towns of India. How’s the experience of shooting at such locations?
Films are set in small towns because people like the stories that come from the heartland. Also, I feel setting films and shooting them in a small town is economical. If a film that is set in a small town, is shot at a real location then you can capture the right flavour. After all, a set is a set. I am from Himachal Pradesh and was raised in Chandigarh. So, I am used to small gallis and mohallas. I enjoy shooting at such places. If you just leave your phone aside and observe their daily routine, how they do their job, how they cook, etc, it is really fascinating. There’s so much to grasp. We shot in remote areas where there were a lot of people, but the shoot happened smoothly.
Have you ever shot for a film in your hometown in Himachal Pradesh?
I will be shooting the last schedule of my next film, Ginny Weds Sunny, in Manali. Once the shoot is completed, I would like to spend some time there. However, I am waiting for a film to come my way, which is completely set in Himachal, where I get to speak in the pahadi language. I have many relatives there. My nani stays in the neighbourhood, while my parents are in Chandigarh. I own a small farmhouse in Himachal, and I enjoy staying there with my family. It’s in Mandi and the house is a 100-year-old, well-maintained property. I bought it two years ago, and we have maintained the old, rooted architecture as is. In fact, it still has a chulha in the kitchen. Abhi bhi wahan gobar (cowdung) ki lipai hoti hai on some floors. Kuch rooms abhi bhi mitti ki bane hue hain. Also, there is a stream flowing next to the house. At night, we have to be careful, as leopards can come in. I love chatting with the locals there. They call me ‘Amy’ and invite me to their place and make chai for me. They give me local gossip, and there are no filmy conversations at all. Once there, I enjoy farming. We already have organic produce and I want to develop it further. We grow apples and plums. The plums from my farms are as huge as apples and they are amazingly juicy and sweet. We don’t use any chemicals or fertilisers. We also grow ginger, potatoes, cucumbers and onions. We sell the produce in the local markets. In the future, I plan to take this further, come up with homemade products and maybe develop it into a side business.
Coming back to Bala, Bhumi plays the role of a self-loving dark-skinned girl, while in real-life, you endorse a fairness product...
We (Bhumi and I) have had this conversation before. I had already shot with the brand for a couple of ads, in the capacity of a model. This is before I had joined the movies. Over the years, I have had conversations with the brand’s team that we need to evolve and move beyond what the brand was (established as) 20-30 years ago. Thankfully, today we don’t have those kind of ads being made, which were produced earlier. I feel that the whole idea of beauty should be, to each his own. Looks are completely your perspective. It’s your face, your body, whatever you feel makes you happy is good for you. Being fair, being tanned, going for tanning cream, fairness creams or no creams at all is your choice. And this is the idea that needs to be propagated. Therefore, we don’t have the old ads anymore. Not being fair cannot be a reason to be unhappy. The brand has been working on it. We now speak about ‘glow’ in our ads, in order to move away from the ‘gorapan’ conversation. I am glad that I got to be a part of a film like Bala, as it addresses many topics like age-old notions, insecurities and perceptions. The film tackles those and looks beyond them.

I couldn’t have asked for a better lead jodi-Puneet Khanna

Debutant director Puneet Khanna on his lead actors, Yami Gautam and Vikrant Massey, who play the titular characters in his ‘unique take on a new-age romance’
Himesh Mankad (MUMBAI MIRROR; October 28, 2019)
On September 16, Vikrant Massey and Yami Gautam kicked off their romcom, Ginny Weds Sunny, in which they play the titular characters. After a 45-day schedule in Ghaziabad, Noida and Karnal, shooting wrapped up on October 24. “Shooting is complete except for a couple of songs, which will be filmed shortly,” informs debutant director Puneet Khanna, adding excitedly that they shot at real locations around Delhi.
Ask him about his lead actors, who are sharing screen space for the first time, and he reveals that he needed someone innocent and endearing for Sunny, and Vikrant was a perfect fit. “For Ginny, we were looking for a bubbly, pretty, energetic girl and zeroed in on Yami. Both are brilliant actors and as a debutant, I couldn’t have asked for a better jodi.”
He goes on to add that the actor-duo shares great chemistry, both on and off screen, which kept the atmosphere light during the shoot. “We were laughing throughout and that bonhomie translated beautifully on screen. They are both contrasting characters and that’s the crux of our story,” Puneet explains, asserting that his hero is an “unexplored powerhouse of talent that is going to explode soon.”
Puneet describes his directorial debut, which is produced by Vinod Bachchan, as a “slightly unique take on new-age romance” and believes that the audience will be able to relate to the story and the characters. The film is targeting a March 2020 release.
We will stop exploring our range if we make each character a replica of the other-Yami Gautam

Discussing her role in Ginny Weds Sunny, Yami on finding a bit of herself in the characters she plays
Mohar Basu (MID-DAY; October 3, 2019)
Set to play a career-driven woman in Ginny Weds Sunny, Yami Gautam draws parallels between this role and that of Ashima, the character she essayed in her debut film, Vicky Donor.
“Both the characters were strong-minded, independent women who could hold their own. Ginny is brave, not brash; she is strong, not arrogant. The opinions that these girls have, resonate with me,” says the actor, quick to add that she understands she must green-light distinct characters to add merit to her resume. “I understand that in cinema, not every character should be the same. We will stop exploring our range if we make each character a replica of the other.”
Sharing screen space with Vikrant Massey in Puneet Khanna’s directorial venture, Gautam’s Ginny turns down a proposal brought in by her mother. It is Massey’s character, Sunny, who, along with the mother, convinces Ginny to tie the knot.
Much like her on-screen avatar, Gautam says she often finds the need to be assertive as an artiste, as well. She particularly despises the manner in which actors are forced to take a stance on matters that may or may not concern acting. “I am a bit of everything, and I want to remain the way I have been, without subjecting myself to the demands of what is expected of me.”
Working with Deepika Padukone was an incredible experience-Vikrant Massey

Smita Poojary (DNA; October 1, 2019)
Whether Balika Vadhu on television, Broken But Beautiful on the web or A Death In The Gunj on the big screen, Vikrant Massey is known for portraying powerful roles. The actor who began his career in Bollywood with a supporting act in Lootera (2013), is now all set to star opposite Deepika Padukone in Meghna Gulzar’s Chhapaak. He describes the experience of working with the two women as heartwarming. “Few get the opportunity to fulfill their wish list and they both were definitely on mine. I never knew that this would happen so early in my career. I’m just six years old in the industry. It was an incredible experience working with Deepika and Meghna both.”
Here, Vikrant also speaks about his upcoming movie Ginny Weds Sunny, playing a lead role in a commercial movie for the first time and the reason he has mostly been part of women-centric movies so far. Over to him...
Were you aware of Laxmi Agarwal’s story when you signed Chhapaak?
Yes, I was but I’d rather not say anything but wait for the film to come out. I can just tell you I’m proud to be associated with the incredible team and subject.
After Chhapaak, you have Ginny Weds Sunny — your first commercial movie as a lead...
I’ve been fortunate to play central parts. But commercially, this is the first time I’m playing the lead. I have grown up watching movies and have been a dancer but I’ve never shaken a leg in front of the camera. I also wanted to try different things that would challenge me. People tell me that I only do serious cinema but that’s not the case. I have an alternate personality. I wanted to tap into it. Then this came along.
How is your character in this movie different?
He is impulsive and sort of having adulting issues. It’s a sweet love story between Ginny and Sunny; they share wonderful dynamics. The film is set in Delhi and I had never got a chance to play someone from there. I really look forward to doing this completely classic Bollywood film.
You started with small roles in movies. What do you consider the turning point?
Every single thing I have done has led to something significant. I started off at the age of 16 and I’m 32 today, so, I have been working literally half my life. It would be unfair if I sat back and said there was one particular thing that was the turning point. Yes, you can zero in on A Death In The Gunj because my collaboration with Konkona Sen Sharma did play a huge part, but Balika Vadhu was equally responsible for me getting the film.
You have mostly been part of women-centric movies like Lipstick Under My Burkha, Chhapaak and Dolly Kitty Aur Woh Chamakte Sitare)...
There’s little space for subjects related to women not just in our movies but also society. It’s a patriarchal world with highly toxic masculinity that we live in. Bahut si auroton ki awaz dabaai jaati hai. So, I feel fortunate about whatever little way I can contribute to reflect the society through my work. This is the least I can do as an artiste and I will continue to do stories that need to be heard. That’s primarily the reason why I love associating with women directors and the length of the part has never been a dominating factor in my career so far. Even though I have supporting parts in the films I’ve done, I’m proud to be speaking for the larger cause.

Yami Gautam has started shooting for her upcoming film, Ginny Weds Sunny, last week in Delhi. The actress plays the titular role of Ginny, who is a modern girl with a unique outlook towards life, which reflects in her dressing as well. Since the character is close to her, the Uri: The Surgical Strike actress has been taking keen interest and working on her look along with her stylist Amandeep Kaur.
To ensure that Ginny is more rooted in Delhi, Yami is visiting local markets like Sarojini Nagar and Dilli Haat among others to pick up striking clothes and jewellery for the character.
Says Yami, “Amandeep and I are so excited to be doing this together. This allows us to take her in a direction that works for the film and us symbiotically. I want to stay away from cliched dressing for her and what better than doing her up from start to finish! We are literally building her up one day at a time, keeping in mind the scenes and moods of the character. We are running everything past the production team. Ginny is one of the most endearing parts I have ever been offered. Everything, from her outfits to her simplistic jewellery and even her shoes, is being sourced by us locally.”
Yami Gautam in search of a ‘parallel life’; returns to pursue organic farming

A year after acquiring a farm in Himachal, the actress returns to pursue organic farming
Avinash Lohana (MUMBAI MIRROR; September 20, 2019)
Nawazuddin Siddiqui had told Mirror (September 10, 2015) that he used to work in the fields of Budhana, till the age of 22 and that he likes to visit his village at least twice a year. We have now learnt that Yami Gautam is returning to her roots as well. The actress had bought a farm in Gohar, Himachal Pradesh last July, and is going back there this November to learn organic farming.
The actress informs that she wanted to gain first-hand knowledge of farming and understand how to minimise the use of fertilisers and medicines. “We started organic farming last year on a small scale. I don’t know anything about organic farming technically and it is something you learn over time. So, after I finish the last schedule of Ginny Weds Sunny in Manali, I’ll take off to my farm for four-five days to focus on it. My family will also join me from Chandigarh to help plan the future produce, learn more about eco-friendly equipment and new techniques of farming,” says Yami, adding that since last year they have grown plums, apples, apricots, ginger, onion and tomatoes.
She goes on to add that while she was growing up, her family always maintained a little kitchen garden in their Chandigarh home, which inadvertently introduced her to the concept of organic farming early on. “We grew as many vegetables in our backyard as possible, like eggplants, bottle gourd, bitter gourd, chillies and coriander. We used to pluck them fresh and make sabzi. The idea is to eat healthy,” says Yami.
The actress asserts that she finds farming therapeutic. “It’s so different from what I do, a parallel life I’d love to pursue. When we’re busy hustling and bustling through our city life and stress, this process makes you feel closer to nature,” she reasons.
Next up, she wants to establish herself as an independent entrepreneur in the field. “Work is already on in this regard, though not on a very big scale for now. There are so many entrepreneurs who have come up in this field in the last few years. I’ve plans to expand this in the future and I’m currently streamlining all of it,” Yami signs off.

Vikrant Massey along with Yami Gautam gear to kick-start his romcom on September 16
Himesh Mankad (MUMBAI MIRROR; September 7, 2019)
After wrapping up Deepika Padukone’s maiden home production, the Meghna Gulzar-directed Chhapaak, in May this year, Vikrant Massey is all set to roll with his next. The romcom is titled Ginny Weds Sunny, and the actor plays Sunny to Yami Gautam’s free-spirited Ginny. “As the title suggests, it’s essentially a marriage drama with the boy falling in love with the girl, who is not ready to tie the knot because she has certain aspirations. Things take a turn when Sunny tries to win Ginny with her mother’s support,” reveals Vikrant, promising a lighthearted treatment to this familiar story. “I really enjoyed the script written by Navjot Gulati and Sumit Aroraa, the writer of Stree. I hope people appreciate our film as well,” he says. The film will go on the floors on September 16 in Delhi. “Unfortunately, Yami wasn’t well, so the shoot got pushed by a couple of weeks. We will begin a start-to-finish two-month schedule now. We will be shooting in Ghaziabad, Greater Noida and some parts of Manali,” informs Vikrant who is looking forward to collaborating with Yami. “We have met for readings and rehearsals, and as we shoot day in and day out, the dynamics will only get better. Yami is a fantastic artiste and has had a great year with Uri.”
Vikrant is also excited to shoot a typical Bollywood dance number for the first time in his career. “I can dance a bit as I used to work with Shiamak Davar in the past. And since we belong to the land of song and dance, it is a part of our culture. So yes, I can definitely dance to save my life,” he says.
His character in the film is of an amateur chef, however the actor affirms that he didn’t need to prep much. “You will see me in aprons and kitchen wear. I have always been pretty casual about my wardrobe and look, for the first time, I will be paying attention to my hair and make-up. I also have a typical Delhi accent in the film,” he avers, pointing out that the audience enjoys a lighthearted film which for a while helps them forget harsh realities making the genre popular.
Mid-Day Exclusive: Check out Yami Gautam's bridal look from Ginny Weds Sunny

Mohar Basu (MID-DAY; July 29, 2019)
After tackling a military action drama in Uri: The Surgical Strike and a social comedy in Bala, the rom-com, Ginny Weds Sunny, serves as a perfect change of pace for Yami Gautam. Ahead of the Vikrant Massey-starrer going on floors in September, the team conducted look tests with the leading lady for a pivotal sequence in the film. mid-day lay its hands on the actor's first look as the on-screen bride.
A source reveals, "The love story revolves around Ginny, who meets Sunny for an arranged marriage, but turns him down. Sunny then teams up with her mother to woo her. In the film, Ginny has a mind of her own, and the attire had to depict that. So, the director and the styling team rejected the traditional red colour to emphasise that Ginny is a different bride. After extensive brainstorming with director Puneet Khanna and several outfit changes, everyone agreed that the emerald green ensemble was perfect for the sequence."
In keeping with her no-nonsense entrepreneur character in the movie, Gautam will be seen wearing pantsuits and pencil skirts in greys and blacks. The rom-com, that marks the directorial debut of Khanna, will be shot across Delhi, Noida, Ghaziabad and Manali over two months.

Chaya Unnikrishnan (DNA; July 29, 2019)
The year started on a good note for Yami Gautam, who played one of the lead roles in Uri: The Surgical Strike, which made to the Rs 200-crore club. Post its success, the Kaabil actress signed three films, starting with Amar Kaushik’s Bala, which sees her reuniting with her Vicky Donor co-star Ayushmann Khurrana after seven years. Yami plays a model from a small town with big aspirations in the film, which is intertwined with a social message.
Besides Bala, she has an untitled romantic comedy co-starring Diljit Dosanjh with whom she will be sharing screen space for the first time. Soon, she will begin shooting for Ginny Weds Sunny with Vikrant Massey. She plays a girl whose mother ploys with a prospective groom to convince Ginny to get married. The pretty actress is looking forward to an interesting year ahead with these movies in her kitty.
Yami says, “Uri has been a very wholesome, rewarding experience. Not only did it allow me as an artiste to explore new layers as an actor, but it also opened several new possibilities. Since Uri released, there has been a positive stream of work that I have been fortunate to receive and I look forward to each of these films. Like Uri, Bala is again an unexplored territory for me. It is a special script, it’s funny and a film with a great social message. While the other two are comedies, too, each of these three projects has me playing characters that are massively different from the other. So, while the genres are similar, the stories and characters in each of these films are vastly varied.”
Vikrant Massey shoots ups his price by 40%

Deepali Singh (DNA; July 13, 2019)
If the adage ‘slow and steady wins the race’ had a face, Vikrant Massey would be one of the foremost contenders for it. From starting his career with television shows such as Dharam Veer and Balika Vadhu to signing a project with Deepika Padukone in Meghna Gulzar’s next, Chhapaak, he’s come a long way. And with his rising popularity, we hear the actor has upped his price by 40 per cent!
The powerhouse performer has proved his mettle, not just in television and commercials but was also noticed in films such as Lootera (2013), Half Girlfriend (2017) and Dil Dhadakne Do (2015), even though he was not in the forefront. He also bagged a nomination for best actor for his lead role in Konkona Sen Sharma’s debut directorial venture, A Death in The Gunj (2017). Since then, he has acted in digital shows Mirzapur, Broken and Criminal Justice.
Now, apart from Chhapaak, he also has Alankrita Shrivastava’s Dolly Kitty Aur Woh Chamakte Sitare, Seema Pahwa’s directorial debut Pind Daan, Cargo, Yaar Jigri and the romcom Ginny Weds Sunny. He is also filming for the second season of Broken But Beautiful. For the next project he signs, we hear the actor will charge a hiked price.
Says a source, “Vikrant has successfully carved a niche for himself in Bollywood and is being considered as one of the most sought-after actors in his league. His success ratio and choice of films have made him a bankable actor. Producers have faith in his acting prowess and popularity with the youth, and hence, do not hesitate to invest in him more. He knows how much rides on his shoulders and the responsibility that comes with it.”
