Farah Khan joins Karan Johar, Jacqueline Fernandez as judge on Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa 9

Natasha Coutinho (MUMBAI MIRROR; August 3, 2016)

Farah Khan is back on a dance reality show, three years after Dance India Dance Super Moms in 2013. The one episode appearance on Nach Baliye 7 doesn't really count. The ace choreographer-turned-director is on the panel of judges of Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa in its ninth season on Colors. She will be joining actress Jacqueline Fernandez and her filmmaker buddy, Karan Johar. Farah was one of the judges in the first season when it aired on another channel with Sanjay Leela Bhansali and Shilpa Shetty. Her last show was the culinary special, Farah Ki Daawat, last year when she cooked up a calorie-controlled storm with her dosts.

“I needed a break from shows and the audience needed a break from me. So I spent the year travelling, taking off on holidays every two months with my kids, Diva, Czar and Anya,“ she quips, adding that she is coming on Jhalak with a twist for the audience. “I start shooting in two-three weeks.“

Having been a part of the show since its first season, Farah has observed many changes in the format. “When I was judging it earlier it was a lot stricter about the dance forms, contestants would perform Salsa and Samba. Now the show caters a lot more to the Indian audience and the scale is much bigger,“ she points out, adding that she will be a “fun judge“ but will not praise contestants if they are bad. “But celebs aren't like common people, there are egos and fan sentiments involved, so I'll be tactful.“

Karishma Tanna is the only contestant she knows from this season as she was part of the Bigg Boss season that she has hosted. But Karan is a close friend and she's looking forward to spending time with him. “I tell Karan he has a frustrated choreographer in him. He keeps saying he won't dance because it embarrasses his mother, but any opportunity he gets, he's doing the tandav. He's the best part of the show,“ she beams.

Meanwhile, she has been talking about a second season for Farah Ki Daawat but admits that it'll take time to go on air. “The onus is on me to get celebs for each episode and that requires at least two-three months of prep,“ she reasons, adding that there's also time for her next film, a woman-centric one this time, to roll.

Gautam Gulati signs two films but neither is with Farah Khan

Sanyukta Iyer (MUMBAI MIRROR; March 17, 2015)

Bigg Boss may not have done wonders for its previous winners, but Season 8 champion, Gautam Gulati, has signed two films since he left the house.

"I play a con man in the first which rolls on April 1. And a film director in the second which I will shoot for simultaneously from April 20. They are both comedies," says the actor who became a household name with the tele drama, Diya Aur Baati Hum.

He adds that he will also be locking a three-film deal with a big banner this month and has bagged a supporting role in a film which will release next year. "I have just 40 minutes of screen time, but I couldn't resist signing the film because of the leading lady," smiles the excited 30 year old.

Denying rumours about collaborating with his favourite host, Farah Khan, Gautam insists that he will not be making his Bollywood debut with her. "Farah ma'am and I share a close bond. She was the one who declared me the 'Bigg Boss winner' and recently invited me on her food show, Farah Ki Daawat, with Alia Bhatt. I am like her bachcha, but I have not signed a film with her yet," he says, adding enigmatically, "But you never know!"

Farah Ki Daawat: Arjun Kapoor proves his culinary credentials; Anil chachu flexes his muscles

Sanyukta Iyer (MUMBAI MIRROR; March 13, 2015)

Farah Khan was gearing up for a sugar-filled episode with Sonam Kapoor as the actress had promised to bake muffins and cookies for Farah Ki Daawat. But their plans were hit for a six when the 29-year-old actress was diagnosed with swine flu. Not wanting to leave the director-choreographer-and now-TV host high and dry, Arjun Kapoor, like a good bade bhaiyya stepped in for Sonam and whipped up his signature dish - Jungli mutton - while his chachu, Anil Kapoor, added a sweet touch with some sugarcane juice.

"Jungli mutton is the only item Arjun knows how to cook. He takes shikaar ka meat, mixes in lots of masala including red chillies and pepper and lets it simmer in the pot for hours," reveals Farah. "Anil doesn't know how to cook anything and wasn't willing to learn either. We eventually forced him to compete in a task and he beat Kapil Sharma and me by squeezing out the maximum ganne ka juice."

Anil is on a perennial diet and his nephew took a tongue-in-cheek dig at his lean-and-fit uncle by mimicking him nibbling from the plates of guests at a party. "He never takes a plate for himself, telling everyone he's on a diet and Sunita (wife, Sunita Kapoor) has forbidden him from eating anything. And then he'll go around taking bites from everyone else's plates till the food runs out," she laughs, admitting that Anil looks younger than his 58 years and when she complimented him, he responded with a thumbs up and his favourite phrase, "Jhakaaaas!"

Arjun on the other hand had to battle the bulge at 150-plus kgs and admitted that he ate "mountains of food" for lunch. When asked how he rated himself as a chef he replied, "I give myself 10 on 10."

And did chacha-bhatija finally walk away, licking their fingers, to the tunes of My name is Lakhan? "Noooo," Farah sighs. "Anil had warned me not to play the Ram-Lakhan song on my show saying he'd been dancing to it for 30 years and was fed up."

Farah Ki Daawat: When Alia Bhatt-Gautam Gulati were tied to each other

BOMBAY TIMES (March 8, 2015)

She maybe one of the hottest young stars today but to be known as a cool chef, Alia Bhatt has a long way to go... that is if her performance on Videocon Presents Farah Ki Daawat is anything to go by. Turns out, for Alia, switching on the gas is nothing short of an adventure and it took her a good 10 minutes to figure out the right way to hold a knife. Lucky that she had Farah Khan come to her rescue, who not only taught the young actress some basic tricks of cooking but also how to make her favourite dish - Thai Curry.

Speaking about the special episode, Farah said, “I am thrilled with the feedback we are getting for our show across various social platforms. And this week, we have another special reason to rejoice, as the show will now also air on Pakistan's TV One, giving me a unique opportunity to reach out to all Bollywood fans and food  lovers across the border

Joining Alia in the kitchen as her challenger-cum-sous chef will be TV star Gautam Gulati, who will be seen going down on one knee with a tomato in his hand, as he proposes to Alia. Adding to the fun, Farah will be tying both Alia and Gautam to each other and challenge them to create a Spanish omelette using only one hand each.
Alia will also participate in a fun game, where she will be quizzed about vegetables that she thinks resemble a celebrity. While she feels that good friend Karan Johar is akin to 'khatta nimbooda' as a lemon is an integral ingredient in most recipes just like a producer is to a film, she labels John Abraham as the teekhi hari mirchi owing to his hotness.

One star whose lunchbox hasn't changed for 20 yrs is that of Shah Rukh Khan-Farah Khan

Like her trademark masala movies in which there is something for everyone, Farah Khan feels Indian cuisine, due to its sheer variety, can also cater to all palates.

She describes herself as a hardcore non-vegetarian. “When you say biryani it means mutton or chicken,” she says. For the filmmaker, there is no such thing as a vegetable biryani. “You can’t call it biryani then,” she says emphatically.

At the moment she is on a weight- loss mission. “On screen, you look much larger than you are. After Bigg Boss, I am now hosting my new culinary show, Farah Ki Daawat, so I am trying to appear in shape,” she says.

Making food and movies are her passion. She has been cooking since she was a teenager and feels that cooking is all about “haath ka kamaal” as it’s inbuilt — either you have it in you, or you don’t. She reveals certain peculiar food habits of hers.

Morning glory
I was never a breakfast person, but now that I am on a diet, I have to follow what my dietician Pooja Makhija tells me. As soon as I brush my teeth, I have a biscuit or fruit followed by egg white omelette or cereals. I have to keep eating every two hours. I am not a coffee person, I like tea. I have a cup of regular tea, not green or black tea. I am not into fruit juices either and thankfully I don’t have a sweet tooth.

Meal plan
Right now, all my food is cooked without oil, so whether it is vegetable, chicken, fish or chapati it’s oil-free. People say avoid white bread, eat brown bread. Avoid white rice, eat brown rice, but bread is bread and rice is rice whatever the colour of it. Next month, I plan to go on a family vacation when my kids (Anya, Diva and Czar) have an Easter break. That’s when I will let myself go. Currently my diet goes haywire during the shoot of my culinary show when I have to taste what the star guests have whipped up. I waited till Happy New Year was wrapped up to embark on my getting fit drive. Otherwise, my cast and crew would have had to bear the onslaught of a hungry director.

On the sets
When I am shooting for a film, I ensure that every week the caterer changes. If you have the same stuff throughout, boredom sets in. So one week it will be Malvani specialities, the next will by Chinese and then South Indian fare. This way, the cast and crew look forward to what’s coming up next on their plate. The crew needs to be well-fed to bear with me. Most stars also carry their lunchboxes on sets, but one star whose box has not changed for over 20 years of knowing him is that of Shah Rukh Khan. His dabba will only have grilled chicken/roti or sometimes cutlets and pasta.

Pots and pans
I learnt to cook from my paternal grandmother. She was excellent and enjoyed cooking. On special occasions, she would start early morning and the whole building would know what she was cooking from the fragrances that wafted through. As my mother’s side was Parsi, I know about their cuisine well. Who can resist Patra Ni Machhi, Dhansak and Salli Boti?

During my student days, I was a street food junkie. I suffered from jaundice thrice. From the vada pavs to the sandwiches to the dosas, I survived on street food. I still recall eating from stalls near Azad Maidan. When I began doing choreography, I travelled all over the world for the shoots, but would still pine for Indian food.

Party time
I recently celebrated the birthdays of my kids at home. The party began at 11 am and went on till almost 8 pm. The kids tell me this is some sort of record for a children’s birthday party. First, they were in the swimming pool and had a brunch. It was almost 3 pm when they came out of the pool after which they had lunch while their moms had foot massages and tarot card reading sessions. It was followed by a screening of Happy New Year. I want my kids to explore all kinds of cuisine. I take them out to eat once a week. As my husband (Shirish Kunder) is Mangalorean, he’s partial to seafood, so I make sure they get a taste of all cuisines.

Board game nights
When I host my board game nights the dining table is laden with food. There will be fish, chicken and mutton dishes. The guests include Bollywood as well as my non- film pals. Bollywood’s three hottest girls — Priyanka Chopra, Deepika Padukone and Malaika Arora Khan — have large appetites. It is shocking to see how much they eat.

Malaika loves my yakhni pulao and always carries a takeaway. She has three of my pressure cookers with her, which she has not yet returned. I am very middle-class when it comes to collecting my dabba, baatli and bartans.

Help at hand
Though I have my staff, I still go to the Four Bungalows market in Andheri to buy fish. I also personally pick up my monthly household stuff from Star Bazaar. I frequent Nature’s Basket as I like the variety of fruits and cheeses besides the turkey slices.

One of my earlier cooks was Basant Prajapati who was an Indian Idol contestant in 2005. He came to Mumbai to be a singer but ended up becoming a cook at my place.

I can't wait to sample Shah Rukh Khan's Chicken Pasta-Farah Khan

Farah Khan who's hosting a food show reveals the culinary secrets of her celebrity guests
Sanyukta Iyer (MUMBAI MIRROR; February 19, 2015)

Farah Khan has been adding masala to the small screen by getting celebrity friends to cook for the camera on her upcoming food show on Colors, Farah Ki Dawat. She's got Malaika Arora Khan in her kitchen, glazing chicken legs with honey to the tune of Chhaiya Chhaiya and Boman Irani steaming Dhansak for two hours. When Alia Bhatt confessed that at 21 she couldn't cook to save her life, the host taught her how to make the perfect Thai vegetable curry.

Quiz her on these new-found chefs and she admits that she never imagined that Abhishek Bachchan could cook. "But turns out he's the best cook I've had on the show. He can roll out a perfect parantha and taught me how to make yummy Dahi Chicken. I thought he'd learnt it from his mom, Jaya Bachchan, who is a great cook but he insists his wife (Aishwarya Rai Bachchan) is an even better cook," she says, adding that she warned him that if he revealed such secrets in public, he better not go home to mommy.

Farah has been cooking since she was 17 and gives herself at least a six on 10 on any Indian dish. She's curious to sample Shah Rukh Khan's chicken recipe. "For 21 years, I've seen Shah Rukh eat only tandoori chicken. But he's promised to serve chicken pasta, SRK style, on the show," she informs, licking her lips in anticipation.

Farah remembers that when they were shooting Dil Chahta Hai in Sydney, she got tired of eating pasta and grilled fish and decided to cook Yakhni Pulao in her hotel room without realizing the sensitivity of the smoke detectors. "An hour later, all the guests were out on the street and the spot boys were in their kachchas laughing at me. I didn't even get to eat the pulao because by the time the mess got sorted, everything was burnt," she recalls.

Since she doesn't like packaged or precooked food, Farah now sticks to firang cuisine when abroad. But as soon as she is back home, she makes a meal of Dahi khichdi and aloo ki sabzi, even if it's 4 am.

Can hubby Shirish Kunder cook? Farah admits he's never cooked anything for her. "My mother-in-law's Manglorian Khopra Chicken and Idli-chutney reminds me of my grandmother," who she insists was the best cook in the world. "On Eid, granny would start cooking around 4 am and the handi of biryani would be opened only during lunch," she recalls. "I have been excited about food ever since that endless wait."

Shah Rukh Khan, Abhishek Bachchan on Farah Khan's cookery show

Nayandeep Rakshit (DNA; February 13, 2015)

After judging a series of reality shows and anchoring few of them- the last being Bigg Boss Halla Bol, Farah Khan is now gearing up for a cookery show. She will don the apron and turn chef for her 'Farah Ki Daawat'.

Farah's love for cooking has made her take up the food based chat show. Farah says, "I have been cooking ever since I was 17. Even today, I try and cook at home because my family loves whatever I cook. I love cooking because it is quite calming and therapeutic. And by virtue of being a complete foodie, I also love feeding the people around me. My friends always tell me that I am a fabulous cook and have the ability to gain people's unwavering attention."

She also feels that as her relationship with husband Shirish Kunder bloomed after she cooked a special meal for her man. "When Shirish and I were still getting to know each other, I decided to cook a special meal for him incorporating most of his favourite dishes including fried prawns. Needless to say, it was a great success; we are married today," she said. After all, the way to a man's heart is through his stomach and Farah believes that completely.

Her children too love the food their mom cooks. While Farah will bring her favourite recipes on the table, there will be Bollywood celebrities joining her in the kitchen. "Farah Ki Daawat is not just another regular cookery show. It's an interesting mix of food and gupshup. Hence Farah's friends from the industry will be seen visiting her in the kitchen and will help her cook some savoury dishes," says a source. "Shah Rukh Khan and Abhishek Bachchan are pretty much on board to shoot one episode with Farah for the show. Talks are on with the others too", added the source.
