It’s disheartening to see negativity being spread-Dilip Joshi

Dilip Joshi issues a statement over his alleged physical spat with Taarak producer Asit Modi
BOMBAY TIMES (November 20, 2024)
Dilip Joshi, who’s best known as Jethalal from Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah, has addressed rumours surrounding his alleged altercation with the show’s producer Asit Modi. According to reports, the two had a heated argument during which Dilip grabbed Asit by the collar and threatened to quit the show. The incident, which reportedly occurred in August, was said to have been triggered by a leave request.
However, in a statement, Dilip has dismissed the reports. He said, “I just want to clear the air about all these rumours going around.”
Dilip said, “There have been some stories in the media about me and Asit bhai that are completely false, and it really saddens me to see such things being said. Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah is a show that means so much to me and millions of fans, and when people spread baseless rumours, it hurts not only us, but also our loyal viewers.”
He added, “It’s disheartening to see negativity being spread about something that has brought so much joy to so many for so many years. Every time such rumours pop up, it feels like we’re constantly explaining that they are untrue. It’s tiring, and it’s frustrating because it’s not just about us — it’s about all the fans who love the show and get upset reading these things.”
The statement further read, “Earlier, there were even rumours about me leaving the show, which is completely false. It’s disappointing to see such things popping up again and again, and sometimes, I can’t help but wonder if some people are just jealous of the show’s continued success. I’m here, I’m working every day with the same love and passion for the show, and I’m not going anywhere.”
Bina sar pair wali khabar hai yeh, it’s fake news-Dilip Joshi

Kavita Awaasthi (HINDUSTAN TIMES; March 5, 2023)
Since Thursday, actor Dilip Joshi has been getting incessant calls after it was widely reported that his life was under threat. News had spread that the police received a call from a person claiming that Joshi’s house was surrounded by 25 armed men. It was followed by news reports mentioning that a police investigation was underway. However, when we called the Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah actor, he dismissed it all.
“It is fake news. Aisa kuch nahin hua hai. I don’t know how or where it started. It has been in circulation for two days and I was astonished to hear it,” says Joshi.
The actor also expressed shock that such news was so widely reported. “Humne agar kuch kiya ho toh aisi koi baat nikle, bina sar pair wali khabar hai yeh,” he says.
While the news caused quite a stir, Joshi prefers to look at the bright side of things.
“Bhala ho uska jisne yeh galat khabar phailaayi. Mujhe kaafi logon ke phone aaye, mera haal-chaal puchne ke liye. Many old friends and extended family members called. It was good catching up with them (laughs). [Due to this] I found out how much people love me. People were really worried about me and my family,” he adds.
I will try to do justice to the role, says Sachin Shroff on replacing Shailesh Lodha as Taarak Mehta

HINDUSTAN TIMES (September 15, 2022)
Actor Sachin Shroff has finally broken his silence on replacing Shailesh Lodha in the show Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah. The actor says he will “try his best to do justice to the role”, and is very excited to be working with actor Dilip Joshi.
He adds, “Dilip ji is currently not in town. When he returns to the sets in a few days, I will get to shoot with him. I will definitely get to learn a lot from him. I know I will get to do something new and exciting.”
The Balika Vadhu actor also appreciated and thanked his co-stars and directors Malav and Harshad for making him “feel comfortable from day one” and sharing “brilliant inputs”.
“I would say not just for this character, but whenever I step out for work, I am always a little nervous and anxious about it. Every actor has that pressure on them to do good. Everyone here on this show’s set is trying their level best to ensure that I don’t feel like I am under any kind of pressure,” he concludes.
Ever since the announcement of Lodha’s exit, there were several speculations about his replacement. Talking to one of the leading news portal, Shroff said, “Jis tarah se paani mein shakkar ghul jaata hai swaad anusar, waise hi, I will try my best to do justice to the role. I just want to request everyone to keep continuing to love our show. I am taking baby steps to get used to the character.”
I’m happy my daughter has inspired many by sporting grey hair at her marriage-Dilip Joshi

Farzana Patowari (BOMBAY TIMES; December 31, 2021)
When Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah actor Dilip Joshi’s daughter Niyati flaunted grey hair at her wedding, it took the internet by storm. The actor says, “Keeping her grey hair as is at her wedding was never an issue for us. We didn’t even imagine that people would react like this. It was never a point of discussion in our house. Jo jaisa hai woh waisa hi theek hai. Everyone reacted in such a positive way and I was happy to see that she has inspired others. I think this is how we should be; we present ourselves the way we are rather than putting on a mask.”
Joshi’s daughter Niyati has always stayed away from the limelight, and when she started trending on social media, it came as a shock to her. Says Joshi, “Initially, when people started talking about her, she was taken aback as she likes to keep a low profile. But social media is something that we can’t control. Anyway, it was a positive thing and, we were fine with it. If this is something that has inspired people, then that’s great. ”
Joshi, who is popular as TV’s Jethalal today, started his career with the film Maine Pyar Kiya in 1989. He may have been a part of many movies, but he says that television was a gamechanger for him, and the medium has given him everything. But does the actor feel stagnated because he is unable to take up any other show apart from Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah?
Joshi says, “This is a comedy show, and it’s fun being a part of it. So, till the time I enjoy it, I will do it. The day I feel that I am not enjoying it anymore, I will move on. I do get offers from other shows, but I feel that when this one is doing well, why unnecessarily quit this one for something else. People love us so much, why would I want to ruin that for no reason.”
People should be responsible and have to cooperate, instead of just blaming just the government-Dilip Joshi

The actor confides that he is shocked by the sudden demise of his friend and actor Amit Mistry
Kavita Awaasthi (HINDUSTAN TIMES; May 10, 2021)
“When the lockdown ends, we have to be as careful as we are today. People shouldn’t start going out or behaving as if nothing happened,” says Dilip Joshi, talking about the spike in Coronavirus cases across the country. He adds, “People should be responsible and have to cooperate, instead of just blaming just the government. We have to be careful and follow guidelines, or else, this will never end. We have to maintain social distance, wear masks and get vaccinated at the earliest.” He suggests everyone take steam regularly to stay healthy and maintain all protocols, even when the cases reduce and not get lax.
As some TV shoots are on in other states, Joshi’s sitcom isn’t being shot for now and he agrees with the production house’s decision to not shoot. “Work will go on but people’s lives are more important. That’s the priority right now. The other productions who are shooting in different cities must be taking utmost care. I believe in God and his will. Saari hekdi is pandemic ne utaar di hai. All development, technology, money - you name it, sab dhara ka dhara reh gaya. Everyone is at home, nothing else matters right now more than family and your health. We took nature by granted and I hope we have learnt the lesson. We have to understand ki aur dhairya aur saiyam rakho. Nothing is permanent and this too shall pass. Have faith,” he philosophises.
His good friend, actor Amit Mistry, passed away recently and Joshi admits it was shocking. “He was well, didn’t have any issues, so it was shocking. It was unfortunate and I don’t know what really happened. I heard he had a cardiac arrest, which was surprising as he would work out and was fit.”
Some people are insensitive towards senior actors, says Natukaka of Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah

Tanvi Trivedi (BOMBAY TIMES; February 7, 2021)
Ghanshyam Nayak aka Natukaka of Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah (TMKOC) resumed shooting for the show on December 10 after recovering from a serious illness. However, after he shot for one episode, many people trolled him for looking weak and remarked that he was trying to hide his illness. Nayak has now responded to all the negativity in an exclusive chat with BT.
He said, “Everybody gets old one day, and people do suffer from illness. I am totally cancer-free now, and my body has responded to the doctor’s treatment. I also shot for TMKOC on December 10 and will continue to be a part of the show. This is all because of God’s blessings and the support of my producer Asit Kumarr Modi and my family.”
Responding to how people had trolled him for looking weak, he said, “Some people are insensitive towards senior actors. I want to urge people not to spread such negativity. If I was not looking the part, my producer would not have cast me. I read somewhere that people also commented on my dressing sense. Those who don’t have any work spread such negativity. I am not affected by it, because I am happy that even at my age, I am working and would like to continue going to the sets as long as my body permits. Just like there are negative people, there are those who have constantly supported me in my journey, and I will be able to do more work and entertain audiences with the humour and laughter along with Jethalal (Dilip Joshi) in the show.”
Nayak added, “My character has found a connect with audiences since 2008 when I joined the show. It is a privilege to essay the role of Natukaka.”
We have to learn to live with the fear because the virus won’t disappear in a hurry-Dilip Joshi

Dilip Joshi, 52, says hard to pull off laughs while facing virus risk
Himesh Mankad (MUMBAI MIRROR; July 16, 2020)
Mirror was the first to report (July 13) that after a four-month break, SAB TV’s sitcom, Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah, resumed shooting last week with the kiddy gang Tapu Sena, and producer, Asit Kumarr Modi. Since then Dilip Joshi, who plays the much-loved Jethalal, has also joined the action. “Fear is always there at the back of our mind as we are surrounded by people wearing masks and gloves and sanitiser stands. The whole environment on the set has changed and by the end of the day you are mentally drained. But still, it’s good to be back at work,” admits the 52-yearold actor.
Dilip has been shooting 10 hours a day, from 8 am to 6 pm, since July 11 to get a bank of fresh episodes ready. “Asit Bhai ensures that all the SOPs are strictly followed on the set. He has gone out of the way to make shooting safe for us, including a sanitisation tunnel, doctors on set to monitor temperature and oxygen levels, a UV Ray machine to sanitise jewellery and other equipment. We have to learn to live with the fear because the virus won’t disappear in a hurry,” he avers.
He admits that they have tweaked the script too because earlier there were humorous confrontations between multiple characters, but now, with a limited cast on the set, it has become necessary for a change in the narrative. “We are shooting with a maximum of four actors per episode. We have cut down on the crew too,” he explains, promising that the popular show will have episodes which build on awareness of precautions that are crucial in these trying times.
The veteran actor admits that it is difficult to evoke laughs during an ongoing pandemic. “It’s tough, but we are trying our best. You have to forget everything in front of the camera and let yourself be transported to a different world. We keep improvising on the set,” he shares, saying the love of the audience has got them back on set. “The virus doesn’t know that we are here to make people laugh. If (Amitabh) Bachchan sir can test positive for Coronavirus even after taking so much care, it can happen to anyone. And actors in particular stand the maximum risk of being exposed to the virus while shooting as they can’t wear masks in front of the camera. So, we are exposed to the droplets, but you must have faith in God,” he signs off with the promise of fresh episodes from next week.
Will film and TV shoots be stalled in Mumbai following the Coronavirus outbreak?

Rachana Dubey and Neha Maheshwri (BOMBAY TIMES; March 15, 2020)
The COVID-19 epidemic has impacted life across the country, including Metros like Delhi and Mumbai. On Friday, the Maharashtra government announced that gyms, malls, cinema halls and swimming pools will be closed till March 31 to curb the spread of the coronavirus. Film releases, live shows, concerts and sporting events have also been postponed. In keeping with the ongoing situation, the Federation of Western India Cine Employees (FWICE) is planning to put all the film, TV and ad-film shoots on hold for a few days as a preventive measure.
FILM BODIES TO MEET TODAY
FWICE’s President Birendra Nath Tiwari told BT, “Shoots for films, TV shows and ads are like public gatherings, and masks and sanitisers alone won’t help in such a situation. For the sake of people’s lives, we, too, can stop work for a few days.” In fact, FWICE has been speaking to various producers’ bodies regarding this. A meeting between members of the Indian Motion Pictures Producers’ Association (IMPPA), Western India Film Producers’ Association (WIFPA), Indian Film & Television Directors' Association (IFTDA) and FWICE will be held today to decide a plan of action.
‘WE WANT TO DRAW UP A WORKABLE PLAN’
Ashoke Pandit told BT, “The idea is not to put a blanket stop on work. We want to draw up a workable plan to ensure that if individual producers, technicians and actors decide to continue work, they are safe. Having sanitisers, masks and medical help at hand and maintaining hygiene are crucial and sets will be monitored for that. More than 50 per cent of this industry works on daily pay packets. Those workers will suffer a great deal if shoots come to a complete halt,” he told BT.
FWICE has already written to producers, requesting them to refrain from shooting in countries affected by COVID-19. They have also been asked to report if any individual who has travelled from a COVID-19-affected region is present on their set. Feroz Khan, the chairman for health and safety vigilance in the FWICE, said, “A few film shoots are on in Lucknow and Banaras, but they are following strict regulations. Anyone with any symptom of COVID-19 is being sent to the nearest medical facility with their payment cleared up to that day.”

TV SETS IMPLEMENT STRICT MEASURES
Meanwhile, the television industry has also implemented measures to fight the situation. While shoots can’t be stalled because of telecast demands and a paucity of bank of episodes, the makers and the crew of TV shows have come together to spread awareness. The Indian Film and TV Producers Council (IFTPC) has issued a directive to all producers, asking them to take the necessary precautionary steps. J D Majethia, chairman of IFTPC and the producer of TV show Bhakharwadi, said, “We have requested broadcasters to urge producers to educate their crew and also maintain hygiene on their sets. We are putting up posters in two-three languages with simple instructions about precautionary measures. We are also encouraging those suffering from any COVID-19 symptoms to bring it to our notice so that we can help them get immediate medical attention. We already have doctors visiting sets to check every worker thoroughly. Those who aren’t feeling well will get paid leaves. We have also requested junior workers to not send in their replacement, which happens in most cases, so that there is no confusion regarding who is working on a given day”.
‘THOSE UNWELL NEEDN’T FEAR PAY-CUTS’
Siddharth Kumar Tewary, producer of RadhaKrishn, shared, “We have asked the office staff to work from home. Those who can’t, like the ones working in the post-production and edit departments, are advised to report only when there is work. On the set, you will find everyone with a mask on. We have ensured that bottles of sanitisers are kept at every 10 to 15 feet. We have also formed a team that ensures that everybody washes their hands and sanitises them frequently. Actors’ make-up rooms, lunch area and bedrooms are disinfected and cleaned every half an hour.”
Kinnari Mehta, producer of Maddam Sir, told us, “Apart from providing sanitisers and soaps, we have instructed each and every member of the unit to practise respiratory hygiene. We also make sure that people bringing food for the unit are wearing gloves all the time. Everyone wears a mask during the shoot and post it.”
Mahesh Pandey, producer of Vidya, says, “We have ensured that sets are cleaned frequently. We have also distributed masks and sanitisers to everyone. Anyone who has been feeling under the weather has been asked to take an off without any fear of a pay cut.”

TV SHOW TO AIR AN EPISODE ON CORONAVIRUS
Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah is currently shooting an episode on the epidemic. Dilip Joshi, who plays Jethalal in the show, says, “Coronavirus is a pandemic and, unfortunately, there is a lot of misinformation doing the rounds. So, our producer Asit Kumarr Modi and the creative team have decided to spread awareness through our show.”
I am praying for Disha to return as Dayaben soon-Dilip Joshi

Tanvi Trivedi (BOMBAY TIMES; July 13, 2019)
Over the past few months, there has been constant speculation over Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah’s lead actress Dayaben aka Disha Vakani returning to the show. The actress, who had gone on maternity leave in 2017, is yet to resume work.
While the makers have confirmed that they are looking for a replacement, the lead actor of the show, Dilip Joshi (he plays Dayaben’s husband Jethalal Gada), is hoping that his co-actor will return soon.
In an exclusive chat with BT, he says, “Two years ago, when Disha announced that she was going on maternity leave, we were apprehensive about how the show will go on because Jethalal and Daya are crucial to it. It is not that an actor can’t be replaced. In the past, too, there have been such cases. For example, when Ronit Roy replaced Amar Upadhyay in Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi, many had wondered if the show would go on. But the fact is, the show goes on. Having said that, Kyunki… was a family drama and this is a comedy show. It is important that the actor, who replaces Disha, has good comic timing and fits the character.”
He adds, “Disha has worked on the character for 10 years, which is not a short period. I understand that when a woman becomes a mother, her priorities change, but at the end of the day, she is also an artiste. An artiste cannot stay away for long from the set, and so, I am praying that Disha will soon want to come back to the show. She has worked hard to establish the character and should not let it go waste.”
Meanwhile, a month ago, when we spoke to the producer Asit Kumarr Modi, he said, “If she returns, we are more than happy to have her back, but she needs to make a decision soon. If she cannot return due to her family issues, we will have to replace her, because the show must go on.”
Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah turns 10: Actors say no show tackles social issues the way we do

As Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah turns 10, five of its most loved characters meet mid-day for a nostalgic look back
Letty Mariam Abraham (MID-DAY; July 31, 2018)
As we set foot in Film City, it's easy to recognise the residential complex, with its bright yellow and blue hues. After all, almost each one of us has been witness to the laughter and learnings, the friendships and fights that have unfolded in Gokuldham Society over the past decade. The set is bathed in lights to commemorate the special occasion. As Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah celebrates its 10th anniversary, we catch up with Dilip Joshi, Mandar Chandwadkar, Shyam Pathak, Tanmay Vekaria and Ghanshyam Nayak for a chat.
Vividly remembering his first day of shoot, Joshi, who plays protagonist Jethaalal Gada, says he had little idea the show would become historic. "My first shot had my character being kidnapped by some comic goons. It has been a smooth sail since then."
Vekaria recollects how he would do bit roles on the show, before the writers etched out the part of Bagha for him. "I've done several roles — from a cop to a taxi driver to a school teacher [before playing Bagha]," he says.
Chandwadkar aka Bhide thinks it is the breezy equation shared by co-stars that helps the show deliver a laugh a minute. Stating that they sometimes incorporate their off-screen antics into the show, he says, "Amit [Bhatt] is hilarious, which is quite at odds with his character [Champakklal]. If someone were to record his antics, it would make for amazing viral content." Nayak, who plays Nattu Kaka, points out that he often ends up being the butt of their jokes. "But I don't mind," he says good-naturedly.
From the affable Dayaben to the eternal bachelor Popatlal Pandey, the distinct characters - each with their quirks - are so deeply entrenched into the public consciousness that it is difficult to imagine anyone else play them. However, Chandwadkar says he would love to step into Tanuj Mahashabde [Iyer]'s shoes. "Bhide is perfect. But from an actor's point of view, I would say Iyer's role has an interesting graph."
In an industry where makers have to resort to generation leaps to keep the audience engaged, the situational comedy has found a loyal fan base without resorting to antics.
Vekaria feels the social commentary on the struggles of the middle-class society resonates with viewers. "Taarak Mehta has discussed so many topics, including education, health policies, old age homes, and so on. No other show does that."
Nayak recalls how a fan, who was battling depression, had the show to thank for his change in attitude. "I know of a viewer who was contemplating suicide. But an episode made him see things in new light."
Joshi credits the team of writers for the show's long-standing success. "Our USP is that we churn out relatable content day in and day out, and still bring on the laughs. Comedy is a difficult genre. When we do our reading, if a particular joke feels forced, we don't let it go. We all brainstorm and improvise on it."
But he is quick to add that the team should now consider following the seasonal format that is popular in the West. "That way, writers will get some relief and the creative output will be better."
Over the years, the sitcom has seen many celebrities - from Shah Rukh Khan to Salman Khan, to Hrithik Roshan - make special appearances. "But the thrill of sharing screen space with [Amitabh] Bachchan sir was beyond words," says Nayak.
Admitting to being a fan of Bachchan, Joshi adds, "When I'd watch him on screen, I didn't imagine I'd share screen space with him someday. This show gave me that opportunity."
Bachchan's compliment to Vekaria during the shoot, is one he holds dear. "The scene required me to mouth Bachchan sir's dialogue, 'I can talk English, walk English'. After we canned the shot, he said, 'Bhai, tum meri jagah aa jao, main tumhari jagah aata hoon'. It was a mind-blowing moment."
One last question:
Your favourite section in Gokuldham Society?
Dilip Joshi: It has to be Jethaalal's balcony. It gives you a complete view of the society.
One character you would like to swap your role with?
Shyam Pathak: I'd love to play Champakklal [Jethaalal's father played by Amit Bhatt].
Your favourite couple from the show?
Ghanshyam Nayak: Bhide and Madhavi [played by Mandar Chandwadkar and Sonalika Joshi]. In fact, I often tell Madhavi, 'You're so beautiful. You look good in anything you wear. Kudrat ne tumhe bahut fursat se banaya hai.'

We could have saved Kavi Kumar Azad's life if he was hospitalised earlier-Ravi Hirwani, Wockhardt Hospital

The sudden demise of Kavi Kumar Azad has left his colleagues distraught but as producer Asit Kumarr Modi says, the show must go on
Avinash Lohana and Lata Mishra (MUMBAI MIRROR; July 10, 2018)
Kavi Kumar Azad, popularly known as Dr Hansraj Hathi of SAB TV’s popular sitcom Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah (TMKOC) passed away on Monday following cardiac arrest. A source from the show’s team informed that the veteran actor had complained of uneasiness and had been rushed to Wockhardt Hospital in Mira Road. The funeral will take place today.
Ravi Hirwani, centre head, Wockhardt Hospital, informed that Azad had been brought in around 12.10 pm. They couldn’t find a pulse so rushed him into emergency and tried to give him cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). “His ECG was flat, and we eventually declared him dead on arrival,” said Hirwani, adding that Azad’s brother told them that since the last three-four days he was having severe respiratory problems and had struggled with hypertension and obstructive sleep apnea disorder since a while. “He was under the care of a local chest physician. We could have saved his life if he had been brought to the hospital the day he started complaining of breathing difficulty.”
The producer of the show, Asit Kumarr Modi, corroborated that Azad hadn’t been feeling well since the last few days and once had even left the shoot early. “On Monday morning he called to inform that he wouldn’t be able to make it to work. He had been really unwell in 2009, but after that he’d been healthy and happy, mingling with everyone on the sets and the news of his death came as a shock to us,” Asit admitted, recalling that whenever he asked Azad’s how he was doing, he would reply with a big smile, “No complaints at all.’
Dr Muffazal Lakdawala, renowned bariatric surgeon at Saifee Hospital, had operated on Azad seven years ago. He remembered him as a guy with a lot of laughs who’d fought hard against obesity. “Sadly, he once told me that his job needed him to be obese, but he was aware that it put him at risk. We managed to save him when he was brought into the casualty ward of Saifee Hospital seven years in a near-fatal condition. He weighed around 265 kg then,” informed Dr Lakhdawala.
The role that made Azad a household name, was earlier being played by Nirmal Soni. “However, because of date issues the collaboration didn’t last long, and we were looking for a replacement. That’s when our creative advisor, Daya Shankar Pandey, who plays Inspector Chalu Pandey in the show, suggested Azad’s name. When I met him, I was really impressed and immediately got him on board,” Asit recalled.
Originally from Bihar, Azad had also dabbled in films, featuring in the Aamir Khan and Twinkle Khanna-starrer Mela and in Imtiaz Punjabi’s Fun2shh... Dudes in the 10th Century. “He was a shayar and could play the guitar really well. All of us are extremely upset because we have been working together for many years and have become like family,” he reasoned.
Ambika Ranjankar who played Azad’s onscreen wife Komal remembered him as a multi-talented, positive person. “He was the heart and soul of the team. I still can’t believe he is gone,” she said emotionally.
Meanwhile, Dilip Joshi, who plays the show’s lead, Jethalal Champaklal Gada, is in London and equally shocked. “His ‘Good Morning’ messages would come every day without fail and did right till Sunday. He had some health issues because of his weight, but he was always a happy-go-lucky guy and was doing well. I’m trying to wrap up my commitments here so that I can fly back to Mumbai as soon as possible. I’m really going to miss him,” said Dilip.
TMKOC which premiered on July 28, 2008 will complete a decade of being on air towards the month-end. The makers were planning a celebration to mark the occasion “We are yet to take a call on that, but as they say, the show must go on. Hathi bhai too believed that and I know his wishes are with us. He had bought his own apartment recently and really had no complaints with life,”Asit said.
Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah all set to turn 10 on July 28

Natasha Coutinho (MUMBAI MIRROR; July 4, 2018)
This month, the TV show Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah completes a decade of being on air. Based on the column ‘Duniya Ne Undha Chashma’ written by the late columnist and journalist Taarak Mehta for a Gujarati weekly magazine, the show premiered on July 28, 2008 and has enjoyed an uninterrupted run while regularly featuring among the top 10 shows on TRP charts.
Dilip Joshi, who plays Jethalal on the show, told Mirror, “I knew the concept was good because Taarak Mehta was a legendary writer, whose works I have been reading since childhood. Producer Asit bhai (Modi) offered me the role and I loved it but the show lasting for 10 years is a miracle. I would often feel that I was repeating myself, but we have been safe since it’s a comedy.”
The actor goes on to add that keeping the show fresh was crucial. “And because of that, fans want it to go on. When they come on set they expect Daya (Disha Vakani) to speak exactly how she does on screen. We have shot in places ranging from Rann of Kutch to Hong Kong,” he says.
And what’s it been like working with Disha Vakani, his onscreen wife who is currently on a break after delivering her baby? “A fantastic costar always helps. Disha is an experienced theatre artiste and we have featured in some wonderful scenes together. I miss her, but we have to respect her priorities,” Joshi says.
Shocking: Leopard scare brings shootings to a standstill at Film City

Apprehension and fear is
writ large on the faces of local residents and people working at Film
City, Goregaon - including officials, actors and the general public - as
they tread on dangerous grounds in the area. A recent spate of leopard
attacks, including the death of a child, has caused panic and brought
outdoor shooting in some locations at a complete standstill. The
Maharashtra Forest Department has ordered that shooting at these outdoor
locations must
be halted for eight days (until August 6) until the leopard, which they
believe is responsible behind the attack of five children, is
trapped. “Kal bhi barah se do baje tak, leopards gate number one ke paas
dikhe,“ reveals security guard Chavan at the premises. The red alert is
clearly on here and while the decision has affected shooting schedules,
officials
say this can not be helped.
5 ATTACKS IN THE LAST 5 MONTHS
Last Friday, local resident Aniket Dileep Page (12) was attacked by a leopard near the Aarey pump house at Film City in the evening; it was the fifth incident of a leopard attack in the the past five months. The forest department set up two cages at a radius of 5 km from the site of attacks - near Film City and the Aarey helipad - with the aim to trap the leopard. Reports state that another cage trap will be installed soon. Says Kolekar, “The forest department is on high alert. In fact, the animal was almost caught when he came close to a cage, but sounds from a vehicle nearby drove it away. We are doing our best to assist efforts to trap it. We also conduct regular patrol besides handing out posters to public.“

The gruesome attacks prompted TV actress Jaya Bhattacharya put out a warning on Facebook. She recalls earlier incidents: “One day, during a shoot of the film Hindustan Ki Kasam, the production people dropped me to the Film City gate after pack-up. I then saw a leopard crossing the road in front of me. I was in the car, but I won't forget the sight of it. The production person was scared to return by auto. In another incident, a leopard picked up a puppy from our sets in front of so many people. We also once saw a leopard relaxing on the ground that is today the set of a TV show. Last year, a child was picked up by a leopard from behind the Aarey side, Gate no 7. We have also heard of an incident, where a guy was talking on the phone on a film set and the animal came from the bushes and took him away. So, leopards have always been there in Film City. In fact, that is their territory and it is we who have encroached there. I would like to tell everyone to please be careful when moving around. Walk in groups, carry torches so that you can see what is nearby. Small kids are easy targets and can fall prey to these wild animals. Remember, this is the jungle, so do not take offbeat, secluded paths here,“ she cautions.
Dilip Joshi aka Jethalal, who is at present shooting for Taarak Mehta ka Ooltah Chashma in Film City, is worried. “We do have an outdoor set, but currently we are shooting indoors,“ he says, adding, “I have heard many stories of a leopard being spotted on other sets. It is scary as it gets very dark towards sundown. I am being extra careful as there are not enough street lights here near the parking area.“
KEY LOCATIONS THAT ARE MORE DENSE HAVE BEEN CORDONED OFF
The film studio complex of Film City is located on the south side of the Sanjay Gandhi National Park (SGNP), which reportedly has a leopard population of 20; the big cats are known to stray into Aarey Milk Colony as well, in search of prey. This has left the officials with no choice but to earmark and close a few sites that are more dense and have a greater chance of leopards straying into them. Mangesh K Raul, assistant manager, studios, at Film City, informs, “Around 10-11 locations are now shut - this includes Bapu Nagar, the temple road, the route towards the helipad, the hill view area, lake downwards, the garden near the lake as well as the reserve garden, Khandala Ghat, the temple maidan and a few more.“ Giving details on the effect on shootings, he reveals, “These locations were used to shoot Bollywood and Marathi films and TV series. The location closure will be till August 6, but if the animal is not trapped by then, it may have to be extended. The call will be taken by forest officials.“
Adds Chandrakant Kolekar, engineer and Film City officer, “We are just adhering to the directions by the forest department. Considering the recent attacks (the last one was on Saturday), it was high-risk situation to keep locations that were remote and in the jungle, open. There is a loss, but we cannot calculate and ascertain how much. As of now, the shooting is closed until Sunday. After a meeting, it will be decided what is to be done next.“
ACTIVISTS SPEAK...'THE ANSWER DOES NOT LIE IN TRAPPING AND RELOCATING THE LEOPARDS AS THEY HAVE A HOMING INSTINCT AND RETURN'
Activists believe that the solution to trap and relocate the animals elsewhere does not work for leopards. Explains Jalpesh Mehta, city-based environmental activist, “There are 35 leopards in SGNP and around nine in Aarey Forest. They move across Aarey and SGNP through Film City and Filterpada encompassing Aarey, IIT Powai to seek easy prey like dogs, pigs, hens and more. The tribals living there since ages know how to coexist with big cats, but it is different for others. We have in the past, along with the forest department, tried to trap these animals and release them far off. But the big cats including lions, leopards and tigers can travel back kilometers to their original destination and on their way they can cause a lot of conflict. So, trapping and relocating is not the solution.“
Affirms ecologist Anand Pendharkar, “You can trap a leopard here and leave it far away, but it will return as the animal has a strong homing instinct. The other danger is that when one territory gets emptied, another leopard comes into its place. These are transient leopards, who are waiting in the fringes to come into the territory.
Film-maker Ashwin Nagpal pegs it down to an increasing loss of green space. “They are converting the Film City area, which is a green zone and almost a part of SGNP into an industrial zone. This means shrinking habitat for leopards and the possibility of more leopard attacks on the fringes of the park,“ he warns.
WHAT IS THE SOLUTION?
It's not a direct one. Says Jalpesh, “The only solution is to co-exist with the wild and in the long run work on removing encroachment. It is humans who have entered the homes of the leopards and not vice-versa.“ Anand adds, “What movie and TV crews and others at Film City can do is to make sure they do not litter the place, especially with food as this attracts dogs, which in turn attract leopards who prey on them. Also, try and cordon off the area and have stronger lighting and fences.“

Dilip Joshi, TV's Jethalal, who's currently in France, talks about the fateful 13/11 attacks
Neha Maheshwri Bhagat (BOMBAY TIMES; November 18, 2015)
Following the terror strikes
in Paris, we learnt that Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah star Dilip
Joshi, is in France on a week-long Diwali vacation. In fact, he was in
Paris till the morning of the blast. Currently in Cannes, South of
France, he shares his experience: “I am here with my wife and
four other couples. I was in Paris till the morning of November 13, the
unfortunate day when the terror attack took place. I left for Cannes on
that day. I didn't know about the tragedy till I was inundated with
calls and messages, inquiring about my well-being. It was shocking as I
was in the city just 12 hours ago.
My parents were worried for me and are constantly on the phone with me
since then. Even the unit of my show was really worried about me. My
co-actor Gurucharan Singh got in touch with me, asking me about my
well being. I was reminded of the 26/11 episode in Mumbai in 2008, and the
tension that enveloped the country
then. It is saddening. The mood all over France is naturally sombre. Most
of the shops are shut here in Cannes. My prayers are with the people of
Paris. I will be returning to Mumbai in a couple of days.“

(Mandar Chandwadkar) to contact SRK and request him to visit the society
on Diwali. The actor gladly accepts this invitation and decides to visit

incident. Dilip Joshi, who plays Jethalal, said, “All of us were
overjoyed when we got to know that Shah Rukh Khan, Deepika Padukone and
other film celebrities will be visiting our set to promote their movie.
He had visited our set earlier and it has been one of the most amazing
experiences ever. He is a thorough professional and ensures that
everyone is at ease during the shoot. We had a lot of fun with King Khan
during and after the shoot. The cast and crew kept clicking pictures
with him.“
Will King Khan forgive Jethalal and visit Gokuldham and will he be appeased by the hospitality of residents of Gokuldham society?
