Week 1: Citylights 5.25 cr, Kuku Mathur Ki Jhand Ho Gayi 2.25 cr

KUKU MATHUR KI JHAND HO GAYI flopped badly as it grossed around 2.25 crore nett in week one. It had a low budget but that was irrelevant with such low collections.

CITYLIGHTS also flopped with poor collections of around 5.25 crore nett in week one. The film actually had steady collections on the weekdays but multiplex occupancies were so poor (10%) that it was always going to lose most of its show even if HOLIDAY - A SOLIDER IS NEVER OFF DUTY did not release. A similar costing flop film, HAWAA HAWAAI, which by coincidence was also released by the same distribution concern grossed 8.75 crore nett in its lifetime run and CITYLIGHTS will not even get close to that figure.

Citylights 50 lacs on Day 4; Kuku Mathur Ki Jhand Ho Gayi 20 lacs

CITYLIGHTS and KUKU MATHUR KI JHAND HO GAYI continued with dull business on Monday as the latter collected around 20 lakhs nett and the former arond 50 lakhs nett.

KUKU MATHUR KI JHAND HO GAYI had a very poor weekend in terms of collections and trend. So, it was never going to go anywhere. But CITYLIGHTS, although poor, had a decent trend over the weekend and so a decent Monday total could have taken it to at least a respectable figure.

But collections came down Monday as with such a low Friday you have to have a similar Monday or better but for  CITYLIGHTS it was lower. The first week will be around 2.25-2.50 crore nett for KUKU MATHUR KI JHAND HO GAYI and 5-5.25 crore nett for  CITYLIGHTS.

CITYLIGHTS had a poor weekend of around 3.25 crore nett. There was growth on Saturday but with a starting point of not even 75 lakhs nett it had to be 100% plus growth and a repeat on Sunday. The film is the lowest opener for Vishesh Films since AWARAPAN in 2007 which collected under 3 crore nett in its first weekend.

The banner normally does well with small budget films but CITYLIGHTS is set to be one of the poorer performers. The business was best in Mumbai circuit. The approx first three day collections are as follows.
Friday - 65,00,000.
Saturday - 1,05,00,000
Sunday - 1,55,00,000
TOTAL- 3,25,00,000

The other release KUKU MATHUR KI JHAND HO GAYI had even worse results collecting around 1.50-1.75 crore nett and not even trending well over the weekend. The film is a low budget but collections don't even justify that low cost. The approx first three day collections are as follows.
Friday - 40,00,000.
Saturday - 50,00,000
Sunday - 60,00,00-85,00,000 (approx)
TOTAL- 1,50,00,000-1,75,000 (approx)

HEROPANTI had a good weekend of around 7.75-8 crore nett taking its ten day total to around 43 crore nett. The drop in the second weekend was around 62% which is very good. It is better than most films released this year barring the ones which sustained very well like QUEEN and 2 STATES.

The film should now comfortably collect 50 crore nett lifetime business and maybe go even higher if third week does not totally capitulate due to the release of big budget HOLIDAY.

HEROPANTI did not start too well in North India but it held up in the weekdays and that pattern help the film over the second weekend. The drop in Delhi/UP was less than 60%.

Citylights-Kuku Mathur Ki Jhand poor on Day 1; Heropanti steady on Day 8

CITYLIGHTS and KUKU MATHUR KI JHAND HO GAYI could not do much at the box-office as both films were below the 1 crore nett mark. CITYLIGHTS was the best of the two but that is not really important with collections so low.

The collections for CITYLIGHTS will come in less than 75 lakhs nett while KUKU MATHUR KI JHAND HO GAYI will be under 50 lakhs nett. There is not much the films can do unless the double up on Saturday and Sunday but that is a tall feat and hardly ever happens.

The above scenario may just pull through in case of CITYLIGHTS but for KUKU MATHUR KI JHAND HO GAYI even doubling up will not make it go far. The collections of HEROPANTI and even X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST were better than both films. Meanwhile in Punjab, MUNDEYAN TON BACHKE RAHIN had much better collections than the Hindi films.
---------------
HEROPANTI continues its good run on its eight day with collections around the 2 crore nett mark. The film was aided by the new releases being dull. HEROPANTI in fact collected much more even if we combine the first day business of CITYLIGHTS and KUKU MATHUR KI JHAND HO GAYI.

The film is now on course to go over 50 crore nett which will be the second time that the collections of a new lead pair will go to 50 crore nett. The first was STUDENT OF THE YEAR but that had a budget similar to biggies.

HEROPANTI will emerge the fifth or sixth biggest nett grosser of the year but its distributor share is likely to be fourth highest beating likes of QUEEN and MAIN TERA HERO.

Lastly, 2 STATES added a little bit more business in its sixth week and will finish at around 101.5-102 crore nett.
