Vinay MR Mishra (BOMBAY TIMES; April 15, 2026)
It’s a month of celebrations for Bipasha Basu. The actress celebrated Baisakhi yesterday (her husband, actor Karan Singh Grover is Punjabi) and today she is all set to celebrate Poila Boishakh (Bengali New Year). The period also marks a personal milestone — it’s the time when Karan proposed to her for marriage a decade ago. “It’s always a special month for us, as it is also associated with our wedding anniversary (April 30), It’s a joyous time for us as a family,” she tells us.
The Raaz actress goes on to add, “The first thing that comes to my mind is that Karan proposed to me in January 2016, and we decided we would get married later in the year, but a friend told him, ‘You are going to wait that much? She’s a catch, she’s going to run away.’ So, he went to my mother and asked for the first available date. And one could only marry post the Bengali New Year. That’s how we got married in the peak of summer on April 30. Our life stories are quite funny.”
‘I am a simple Bengali girl who loves mishti’
For Bipasha, the Bengali New Year begins and ends at the dining table — everything else is secondary. “I’m a very simple Bengali girl who loves a lot of food and mishti (sweets). I love mishti so much that I gave my daughter the nickname, Mishti. It’s only my mother who calls her that, however, she prefers to be called Devi, she’s quite a goddess in her own way. I’m such a Bengali at heart, I love mishti so much. We, Bengalis, only celebrate with food. That’s our love language.”
She adds, “Poila Boishakh is followed by Baishakhi, so our families always meet and eat together. If you are from a Bengali household, you would know how we love to get together, chat and eat. Everyone talks at the same time, and everyone understands everything (laughs).”
‘My husband and my daughter love dressing up
She keeps things simple and doesn’t fuss much about dressing-up too much for such occasions. “I am quite a lazy girl in my real space, but I love to be in comfortable clothes. I think the maximum effort of dressing up is for my work. In my house, my husband loves to dress up, my daughter loves to dress up, but I am the person who doesn’t like to dress up much,” she says.
‘No new year resolutions for me’
There’s no ‘New Year, New Me’ mantra for Bipasha. “I’m pretty happy with all the decisions that I make in life. I’m quite a deep thinker and I don’t make rash decisions ever. I’m a Capricorn, I’m a goat — slow and steady, hardworking, and we plan a lot. Everything in my life is organized, so there’s nothing that I can really think of leaving behind now,” she concludes.
It has been my mother’s dream that Karan Singh Grover and I have a baby-Bipasha Basu

Mum-to-be Bipasha Basu Singh Grover is grateful for this new chapter in life
Rishabh Suri (HINDUSTAN TIMES; August 19, 2022)
Actor-couple Bipasha Basu Singh Grover and Karan Singh Grover, who announced their pregnancy on Wednesday, say they had been trying for a baby for a long time but put it on hold when the world was hit by the pandemic. Talking exclusively to us about this new chapter, Bipasha reveals that it was, in 2021 when she and Karan again thought about starting a family.
“The plan was definitely to focus on that (having a baby). I did not take up any kind of work at first because I wanted to have a baby, [but] then I started working again. So, it took me a little time. But we completely dropped the idea in 2020 because we didn’t know where the world was going [due to Coronavirus]. So, for one year, we took a break from trying [to conceive]. And in 2021, we decided to try again, and God has been kind. We conceived!”
The 43-year-old doesn’t reveal when the baby is due, but we have got to know that she is in her second trimester and is five months pregnant currently. Recalling the moment she found out she was pregnant, she shares, “It was a very emotional day. I remember Karan and I running to my mother’s house. She was the first person I wanted to tell. Everyone was emotional. It has been my mother’s dream that Karan and I have a baby. I always had faith that it would happen. I am more than grateful for this.”
The couple got married in 2016 and this will be their first child. Bipasha harks back and says that she is aware that she got married a little later than the usual norm, but asserts, “When you find a partner late in life and settle down late, as a person you are extremely mature and responsible, and you know when exactly you will be responsible enough to give birth to another life. It was a proper decision between us. We decided to not have one until we are able enough.”
Bipasha is considered one of the fittest artistes in Hindi films. Ask her how she is feeling about all the changes that happen during pregnancy, and she says, “There have been a lot of changes, and I am absolutely comfortable with everything.”

As told to Natasha Coutinho (MUMBAI MIRROR; April 9, 2018)
I was in school when I landed my first modeling assignment. I had just given my Higher Secondary (Class 12) exams when I was spotted at a five star hotel in Kolkata. Some strangers approached me saying the preliminary rounds of a supermodel contest were coming up and asked me if I’d like to take part. I was a science student and I didn’t know much about modelling. But they urged me saying they were selecting 100 girls from Kolkata and all I needed to do was fill out a form so that’s what I did.
Within a few days, the list of 100 aspiring models had whittled down to 17 and to my surprise, I was one of those shortlisted. We were invited to a cocktail party which would be followed by the final round. I told my parents I was going for a birthday bash and sneaked off. We were asked some questions, I rattled off my replies and returned home, quickly forgetting the whole thing.
But in a week’s time, super model Mehr Jesia called my residence and told my mom that I was one of the three girls selected from the city. She pulled me up for taking part in a contest without telling them and I whined that since it was holidays, I had done it for a lark. The team convinced mom to let me fly to Mumbai, promising her that I would be looked after well and that my family would not be required to make any financial investment. She, in turn, convinced my dad and I dashed off for the finale. To my surprise, I won the contest and was sent to Miami for the international pageant. That was a jolt for my family because they were expecting me to return home in a month and focus on my studies.
I was only 16 and it was my first trip alone abroad. I guess I did something right because I got signed by Ford and started working in New York as a model. I was enjoying the job and didn’t want to give it up. I told my parents I would complete my graduation from an open university later and wanted to continue doing what destiny had planned for me.
Making a name internationally as a model was tough because all the other girls were far better prepped up. They came from modest backgrounds — some European girls had absolutely no money — while my family was well off and I was a little spoilt. So, I made the other girls cook for me while we were living together because I didn’t know how. I couldn’t even open a tin! Also, I had never taken public transport before so I would always get lost. The agency gave me a chaperone who taught me how to take the metro.
When I returned to India after a year, things were tougher as no one remembered me. I was put up in an apartment in Kalina by the organisers. It was a truck drivers’ colony and I was scared to live there. Photographer Farrokh Chothia, my first friend in Mumbai, was disturbed by the fact that I was made to stay in a rough locality like that. I used to leave home early and roam around with a hammer in my bag. Thankfully, I never needed to use it. Farrokh helped me send my pictures to other top photographers and quickly, I started getting work. I used to work late and fall asleep in the cab.
I recall an incident when after a fashion show, I was going home late at night. A bunch of rowdy men started following my car, the cabbie managed to dodge them and got me home safe. Those days, we had pagers and he made me call my PG guardians down to take me home. Eventually, I moved out and into an apartment in Breach Candy which was far safer.
Modelling is a competitive business and tough to break through. Once the senior models at a fashion show asked me and another newbie to get them coffee. My fellow model got up to serve them but I stayed put, telling them to get it themselves. I got ragged a lot because I was a no-nonsense girl. Fortunately, I had some protective friends like choreographers and those who worked backstage who would watch out for me. But senior models wouldn’t let me enter when I got my cue and harass me while I was changing.
The makers of my debut film, Ajnabee, saw me at a Rohit Bal show, and introduced me to director-duo Abbas-Mustan. Before that, Vinod Khanna had offered to launch me in Himalaya Putra with his son Akshaye but I was not interested in movies then. Akshay Kumar and Parmeshwar Godrej had approached me for a movie that time around and I had turned down that offer as well.
I was then to be introduced in J P Dutta’s Aakhri Mughal with Abhishek Bachchan. Jaya ji (Jaya Bachchan) had herself called me and asked me to do the film. I was intimidated by her and said "yes" out of fear of offending her and gave my first shot in front of Mr Amitabh Bachchan but that film didn’t work out. I finally made a beginning in Bollywood with Ajnabee which was ahead of its times and had me in a negative role. I was only 19 then and travelled the world with the film. Everybody from Akshay Kumar to Bobby Deol and their families helped me. Abbas-Mustan are gems and gave me as much attention as the stars. The rest, as they say, is box-office history.

Days after their first marriage anniversary, Bipasha Basu and Karan Singh Grover tell us what they’ve learned about each other
Upala KBR (DNA; May 2, 2017)
Bipasha Basu finds husband Karan Singh Grover to be a great partner. After a year of being together as husband and wife, that’s something that hasn’t changed. She finds his being over-sensitive annoying, he hates it that she’s always right. Those are things boyfriends and girlfriends say about each other. They pick up after each other. She manages his money, he knows how to end an argument/fight by saying sorry. And she’s protective while he’s possessive. We could tell you more but why not make it more fun by letting them tell it as it is. Here’s the conversation we had with the year-old pati-patni who are still very much in love..
What’s the most annoying habit of the other that you would want to change?
Bipasha: Karan’s a quirky guy. I got my man and this is what for me is the mark of a true man. But what annoys me? He’s very sensitive. Sensitivity is a great thing. But he’s too sensitive...
KSG: You’re annoyed by that? It goes with the person I am. I’m so hurt!
Bipasha: Yes and I am okay with that. I don’t want you to change that. Sensitivity is a great thing, but Karan is too sensitive.
KSG: Things can hurt me very quickly… but only things Bipasha would say, not anybody else.
Bipasha: And with a moophat person like me, it’s tough on Karan. I am very dry. My straightforward manner is not sugar-coated ever. I am definitely very blunt, but I don’t mean that. His heart is so soft that he gets hurt.
KSG: It’s soft for you. I understand what she’s saying once I process what she says. I have to analyse it. The most annoying thing about her is that she’s always right. It’s tough to be in a fight where you know that the other person is always right, no matter what and you are spending the rest of your life with her (Bipasha laughs). No matter how angry or upset you get in your head and heart you know that she’s right. I like to be right sometimes (looking at Bipasha). She’s very particular about always being on time.
Bipasha: So much so, I have sent him to places early and he’s roaming around. I’m very edgy about timings.
KSG: Unfortunately, there’s a never-ending fire lit under my behind. For an award show, she sent me 15 minutes before it started and I had to wait in a restaurant! That’s not fair.
Bipasha: See that’s how he makes me laugh so much... By talking baaje-baaje kotha bole (nonsense) all the time. He can understand and talk fluently in Bengali now. He loves the word chulkuni (itching).
KSG: She’s very romantic too. She bought me the best jacket in the world and made dinner for me. She got me this amazing international brand which takes a lot of time to be delivered.
Bipasha: The courier guy gave it to him. It was to be a surprise. His eyes lit up and he didn’t take it off till night, that too he did, because I told him to or he would have kept wearing it (laughs). You don’t know how he is with clothes. I can’t let him destroy the jacket in his sleep. We are very different in that way. He has to use it then and keep using it. He’s like a big kid. Another quirky trait is he’s over-generous.
That’s wonderful...
Bipasha: Not at all! (laughs) My job has increased now!
KSG: That’s why she takes all the money from my account and puts them in fixed deposits. Like hai hi nahin, kya karega abhi?
Bipasha: All his investments are locked straight as it comes. I am all for helping people, but he’s helped a lot of useless people in his entire life. Money for him is nothing. If someone needs it, he gives it away. But he’s changed now a little bit.
Who is the problem solver?
KSG: We don’t have problems, but fights and we get engrossed too much in that, so we take turns.
Bipasha: If there’s a problem or complication including finance or the family, then I solve it.
KSG: And she starts it again by saying, ‘Don’t say sorry. I hate sorry!’ She has no place for a word like sorry in her life so she doesn’t like to use it or hear it.
Bipasha: Sorry was made for people who need excuses in their lives.
KSG: Next time we have an argument instead of saying sorry, I will say ‘I am so Lulu!’ (laughs) I take the big decisions in life, like, ‘Who will go to war with China or Pakistan?’ I have learned this from my father-in-law. He told me, ‘Hamara dono biwi na... fire hai! Tum usske saath thoda thanda rehna. Tum water sign na, aag ke upar paani daal dena. No problem.’ One day, I saw Bipasha and her mom fighting and it was like this tandaav happening! Her dad and I kept looking at each other. His sarcasm and humour is something else.
Do you do stuff without telling each other?
Bipasha: Like work stuff, maybe, but not often. We keep our work separate unless we have deals which come to both of us. That’s the only time we discuss. When he asks me to read scripts or listen to narrations, I say no, because he is a very bad narrator to me!
KSG: You do stuff without telling me? I would like to clear this out. This is her perception of things. Her work is separate. My work goes through her and then comes to me. Somehow everyone who is managing my work first goes to her...
Bipasha: If he’s not answering his phone, they call me to pass on a message.
KSG: Now they don’t call me at all. Any work I do, I always check with her first as she gives good advice. Where scripts are concerned, I come back and tell her all excited and she looks at me and says, ‘I don’t know what you are so excited about but it’s crap!’
Of the two of you, who is more possessive?
Bipasha: I have my moments, but Karan is more possessive between the two of us. He keeps telling me, ‘She’s mine. All mine.’ and he wants me to keep saying it. ‘You are all mine? Only mine’. And I have to say ‘Yes, I am yours. Forever’.
KSG: She is more protective than possessive. Till a few days before our marriage, she couldn’t say the word ‘husband’. She would stammer!
No man has given me more love and respect than Karan Singh Grover-Bipasha Basu

Madhureeta Mukherjee (BOMBAY TIMES; May 25, 2016)
Theirs was a fairy-tale
romance -with exotic vacations, spectacular celebrations, lavish dates
on faraway islands and dazzling 'fireworks'. Literally, too. Of course,
and selfies that spilled their story bit by bit. In an ultimate
romantic style, last New Year's eve, Karan Singh Grover went down on his
knees and proposed to his ladylove Bipasha Basu. It seemed no less than
a perfectly scripted romantic movie, though he says it was spontaneous
and it felt like the “right moment.“ There were fireworks lighting up
the night skies on a stunning beach, elated spirits and sounds of
cheer. Amidst all that, he popped the question. In a state of daze, she
said, “Okay.“ He said, “I will take that as a yes.“ Months later, they
took their wedding vows, and the grand day was planned by the beautiful
bride herself. In their first interview post shaadi, Bipasha (looking
lovely with a
touch of sindoor on her forehead) and Karan talk about the wedding
hangover, and their new beginnings. Read on...
So how's the post shaadi effect? Or should I ask is there any shaadi ke side effects?
Bipasha: It's been less than a month since the wedding, so I'm guessing it's too early for side effects. Honestly, the two months before the wedding was strenuous for me, as I was the event manager for my own wedding. I felt no jitters absolutely; in fact, I had the best time of my life during those two days of the wedding. My mom said that I was like a hooligan of a bride. I am still reeling under the effect of the wedding. I was particular about every minute detail.
Karan: Being particular is an understatement, she was anal about everything, and she just wouldn't rest. Few days after the wedding, she woke up in the middle of the night and asked me about which security is handling which door and where are the guests entering from.
Bipasha: I guess it's the wedding hangover!
So tell us about the moment when he popped the question?
Bipasha: Well, I believed in marriage, but I never thought I would get married. So when he proposed, my first reaction was...'what are you telling me?' And...
Karan: ...Let me complete the story for you. We were in Koh Samui, it was December 31 and the sky was lit with fireworks. I was carrying the ring with me and something told me that this is the right time. So while she was capturing the fireworks on video, I took the opportunity and gave her the ring. And guess what? Her expression was that of someone who was going to be murdered, like in some of her films. Just picture this...I am on my knees for 10 minutes and between sobs she tells me...'What's wrong with you, why do you want to marry me? I am not supposed to get married.' Finally, she said...'Okay'. To me it sounded like a yes, so I said I will take that.
Dating is one thing. Marriage is something else. Now that you are living together, does it feel different?
Bipasha: Our relationship started as deep friendship, not the Bollywood kind of 'good friends'. I have never met anyone who is so much like me, who is not judgmental about anything in the world and who sees the good in everything. So we are very compatible as partners. Living with him is easy, as he does a lot of household stuff and doesn't expect me to do it. I must say that I feel pampered and he treats me like a princess. My friends tell me that Karan is like a foreigner, as you don't often see Indian men do much of household chores. I genuinely feel happy to see him doing the things he loves doing, like vocal training or painting. I like people with passion and it inspires me. I know that I have a partner who just lets me be, though I don't let him be (laughs!). He is not allowed to just be.
Karan: Hey, see she said it, I didn't. On another note, Bipasha was someone who I didn't know for long and who wasn't family (back then), yet, she gave me all the strength and support which no one ever did.
You were open about your relationships in the past, Bipasha. This time around, you were tight-lipped. Why? Though you couldn't stop posting cute pics on social media?
Bipasha: I guess I was still figuring out our relationship, so I didn't want to talk about it and label it right away. Frankly, there was no real plan to talk or not talk about it. We were living our life, and it didn't stop us from going on holidays and doing our own thing.
Bipasha, we heard that your parents took a while to accept Karan and they had reservations about him?
Bipasha: I don't know why the media kept making our parents sound like some villains. I am very close to my parents, but over the years they've had no control over what I have done in my life. They know I am responsible, and I know that they will always be protective about me. My parents didn't know Karan, but when they saw me so happy, they just came around. He met my mom first; he met my dad much later. My dad never makes quick opinions about people; he likes to build a rapport. I guess they are in a place where they will build a relationship with him.
Karan: Yes, I met her parents in instalments. I met her mom at her birthday party. Bipasha is exactly like her mom - a gorgeous, fiery lady. The first time I met her I touched her feet and I hugged her for really long. I guess that broke the ice and I remember that we even danced that night. Her dad and I shook hands at arms distance at first. Now we hug. At the wedding I kissed his cheeks couple of times. Chance pe dance (laughs!).
Bipasha: Karan's family is very accepting, and I had started talking to them on facetime long before the wedding. Over the last two to three years, his parents have seen him change as a person, for the better. He had a lot of baggage around him, but slowly the choices that he made for himself started changing and his parents saw him coming back into his own self again. It is like starting life from scratch. These choices require a lot of strength. I don't take any credit for that.
Karan (looks at her lovingly and says): These choices require a lot of strength from your partner, too. It's just that sometimes you drift away from your real self, and when your life is a little empty you fill it up with things you don't want. Then you realise what your life is all about and all those things start changing. It takes a lot of effort and encouragement.
Karan was married twice before; did that ever bother you, Bipasha?
Bipasha: It didn't bother me and we spoke about it. I believe that everyone has a journey, and it is very easy for anyone to exclaim, “Oh...this is his third marriage, nahin chalega...divorce ho jaayega.“ I tell people that you have to be in someone's shoes to know their story and understand their journey. This world is full of cynics, and thankfully, I have never been cynical no matter what has happened in my life. I have always been a believer. And Karan is like that, too. I feel I am lucky, as I live only for love. And no man has given me more love and respect than Karan. I might not be looking for the same thing in marriage, like others do. I have my own checklist, and I have ticked my boxes accordingly. And I believe you can't judge anyone for their bad relationships. I have had bad relationships, and I could have been easily married twice. The relationship could have been as deep, but I didn't fall into the legality and that is the only difference. You can't condemn someone on the basis of a piece of paper.
Karan, have you ever won an argument with her? There's a saying that goes... Marriage is a relationship where one person is always right and the other is the husband.
Karan (his quickest response in this interview): No! I have never won an argument with her, and I don't try. There is no point. It's not because she is better at it, but she is mostly right. It is irritating, but 99 per cent of the time she is right. I can argue and scream as much as I want, but at the back of my head when I know that she's right, it is a pointless battle.
Bipasha: I'm usually right! (with a naughty grin)
Karan: Yeah, yeah, she must be thinking...it's a curse; I am always right, I don't know what to do.
Any lovers' tiff, yet?
Karan: Well, we haven't really had a lovers' tiff, but I am somebody who likes to do things in my own relaxed pace. And she wants everything done - now! I am aware that I'm supposed to do something, but she will keep reminding me every 10 minutes.
Bipasha (teasingly tells him): I am never going to change that stand, everything for me is - now. It's been a rule since childhood. I am older than you, so listen to me.
Karan: While that may be right, you know how I describe her? She's a small, crazy child stuck in a hot woman's body.

A 'friend' of the couple reveals why it took the much-in-love couple so long to make their relationship official
Sanyukta Iyer (MUMBAI MIRROR; March 31, 2016)
Since they featured in
Bhushan Patel's horror-erotic in 2015, Karan Singh Grover and Bipasha
Basu have not been Alone. From gymming together to frequent getaways to
Goa, the duo has rarely strayed from each other's sides in the last
two-and-a-half years. Mirror has learnt that within a year of dating,
Karan went down on bended knees to pop the question with a solitaire.
The 37-year-old actress, who had been patiently waiting for Karan's
divorce from
Jennifer Winget to come through, was delighted. But her father, Hirak
Basu disapproved of a man who was not financially stable and who had two
failed marriages behind him.
“So even though Karan
was clear, since early 2015, that he wanted to marry Bipasha, her father
did not want her to tie the knot with him and even told his mother
(Deepa Singh) this,“ revealed a close friend of the 34-year-old actor.
Dill Mill Gayye's Dr. Armaan Malik had reportedly been seeing his co-star, Jennifer Winget at a time when he was still married to actress Shraddha Nigam, whom he had wed on December 2, 2008. The marriage ended after 10 months. Karan and Jennifer made their relationship official on April 9, 2012 but filed for divorce two years after, in November 2014.
Karan's second divorce came through in mid-2015 and immediately, Karan and Bipasha informed their parents. “Since her father wasn't ready to give them his blessings, the couple moved in together into a plush Khar apartment, much to their parents dismay. After a year, their parents called it truce, and Bipasha will take the pheras with Karan on April 30,“ informed the friend.
The three-day extravaganza will kick off with the sangeet on April 28, followed by the mehendi a day later at the Andheri residence of Bipasha's parents. A mandap will be erected on the building's terrace, the pre-wedding bash and bachelorette party will be hosted at an upscale Juhu watering hole. The wedding will be at a suburban five-star hotel with Bipasha's friends, Deanne Pandey, Shilpa Shetty and Raj Kundra and Sushmita Sen in attendance. “Bipasha wants a traditional Bengali ceremony and prep is on full swing. Rocky S is designing both, the bride and the groom's attires, for the big day,“ the friend added.

Bipasha Basu and her Alone co-star Karan Singh Grover may be going off on holidays together, and happily posting pictures on social networking sites, but there’s someone who is not happy with their romance. Buzz is that the Bong beauty’s mom is not very fond of Karan who has a reputation as a ladies’ man. He even has two divorces behind him — Shraddha Nigam and Jennifer Winget. Wonder if Bips will take heed or it’s already too late?
