The pressure of the success of Aashiqui 1 was upon us-Mohit Suri

Onkar Kulkarni (MUMBAI MIRROR; April 27, 2026)
As his directorial Aashiqui 2 clocked in 13 years on (April 26), Mohit Suri revisited the journey of the film that lives in the heart of the audiences.
Getting emotional about this milestone, Mohit told Mumbai Mirror, “I think the reason this film has resonated for so many years is because all of us who worked on this film — Aditya Roy Kapur, Shraddha Kapoor, the music directors and me — we all were at that stage of our careers where we were not chasing success but we had something to say emotionally. We had seen failure. Mithoon (singer-composer) and I had success with Murder 2, but Aditya and Shraddha wanted to prove themselves as they had not seen success despite being part of big films. Ankit Tiwari, who was new, sang the song Sun Raha Hai Na Tu. Jeet Ganguly (singer) was trying to do something outside his comfort zone.”
Reflecting on the phase they were all in at that time, Mohit said, “All of us went out with the intention of doing something we had never done. The pressure of the success of Aashiqui 1 was upon us, but we all went out to make a good film. Success was the cherry on the cake. I believe that when you say something with your heart, the world listens.”
He further added, “Every year no matter what happens and where she is, Shraddha always messages me on this day. We might miss our birthdays by a day or two, but we never miss this day and we thank each other for where we are today.”
#BoycottMaldives: Why should we visit a place where people make such hateful comments?-Ankit Tiwari

Rishabh Suri (HINDUSTAN TIMES; January 14, 2024)
Inspired by his patriotic sentiments, singer Ankit Tiwari recently cancelled his family trip to the Maldives amid the #BoycottMaldives row. He took to X to share the change of plans, mentioning, “My wife, daughter, and I were about to visit the Maldives, but we found a better and unexplored island in our very own country, Lakshadweep Island.”
Explaining the decision, Tiwari tells us that the trip was initially planned for February but, upon learning about the Maldives controversy, he decided to switch the destination: “Why should we visit a place where people, especially ministers, make such hateful comments about our PM and our country? Is it really worth it? So, my wife and I dropped the plan immediately.”
The singer adds, “Meanwhile, we also saw our PM Modi’s amazing pictures of snorkelling and taking a walk by the beach at the beautiful Lakshadweep island, and we immediately changed our plan.”
Addressing the challenges of taking a stance as a public figure on political issues, the singer admits that it is indeed difficult. But it also highlights the responsibility that comes with a wide-reaching audience. “When you (as a public figure) say something, it’s not just heard by 100 or 200 people; it’s heard by the entire nation. This time, I never questioned whether I was doing the right thing; I knew I was promoting Indian tourism,” he shares.
Unwanted and disrespectful, says Ankit Tiwari on catfight at Bihar concert

Rishabh Suri (HINDUSTAN TIMES; October 7, 2023)
During singer Ankit Tiwari’s recent concert in Katihar, Bihar, a fight broke out between two female fans and a video went viral. Reacting to the incident, the 37-year-old tells us, “The video surfacing on social media is bizarre and uncivilized. My fans are my backbone. I understand their passion and am overwhelmed with all their love and support. However, during this concert, due to security reasons, everyone couldn’t reach the front line. But that doesn’t mean they indulge in such a nasty fight and disturb everyone’s peace.”
While the reason for the fight isn’t known, Tiwari had to stop his concert midway due to the commotion.
The two women in the video can be seen pulling each other’s hair and landing some blows, too. The Tu Meri Aashiqui and Shaamat (Ek Villain Returns, 2022) singer goes on to add, “I hope no one was injured. I also request everyone to not fight like this and get themselves or others in trouble. It’s demeaning, unwanted and disrespectful. I felt disheartened watching that video. With folded hands, I request my fans to maintain peace and harmony as that’s the best way they can show their love for me.”
10 Years of Aashiqui 2: My dad called Mohit Suri, said the music is better than the work he did in his entire career-Mithoon

Syeda Eba Fatima (HINDUSTAN TIMES; April 26, 2023)
Mithoon’s father, Naresh Sharma, was responsible for the sound arrangement for the 1990 hit Aashiqui. Destiny played its part, and 23 years later, Sharma’s son, music composer Mithoon, came on board to work on the music of Aashiqui 2.
Mithoon initially did not tell his father about his involvement in the project. “That gave me a lot of space to work [on my own and not feel any more pressure than what I was already feeling] to recreate the magic with the second instalment. When the basic idea of the song was ready, I went up to him and told him about the news.”
So what did his father say? Mithoon shares his father “gave a very understated reaction”: “That’s because he is also my guru, and I can’t get very pally with him. However, after a few days, when he heard the final version of Tum Hi Ho as well as the instrumentals in the film, he called up Mohit Suri (director), who was in South Africa at that time, and said, ‘What my son has done for your film is better than the work of my entire career’.”
Mithoon says it was an extremely emotional moment, not just for him but also for Suri, as the entire team needed that pat on the back from someone as experienced as his father.
Tum Hi Ho went on to become a massive hit, with its popularity enduring to this day. When asked what makes the melody timeless, the composer says, “It’s the intention to not create history. All I tried was to work on an emotion I connected to.”
Mithoon, who is often requested to perform the song during his live shows, calls it the “most honest moment with his audience.”
“When all the barriers between me and my audience are broken and we are one, that’s when I perform Aashiqui. I never see it as a mere presentation to impress people. This song is beyond streaming numbers and awards for me, and when I perform it, I let people know that I am sharing a piece of my life with them,” he ends.

Soumya Vajpayee (HINDUSTAN TIMES; April 26, 2023)
Composer Jeet Gannguli worked on six songs in Aashiqui 2 and he says the film changed the way music was perceived in Bollywood.
“Aashiqui 2’s music was a revolution of sorts. I had six songs in the film, including Piya Aaye Na, Chahun Main Ya Na, Milne Hai Mujhse Aayi, Hum Marr Jayenge and Bhula Dena Mujhe. While working on these songs, I wanted to make sure that besides the arrangement, the lyrics and melody were top notch. I believe that’s why it received so much love and continues to be enjoyed even now,” says Gannguli.
The composer adds that the success of the film’s music contributed to how Aashiqui 2 fared at the box office. “When the soundtrack of a film becomes successful even before a film’s release, it does wonders to the project. Music acts like a magnet that forces people to hit the theatres. Aashiqui 2 was not just a musical hit, but also a blockbuster because of how the film was. The film’s music took singers Arijit Singh, Ankit Tiwari and Palak Muchhal to new heights. The film’s music was like magic. It brought about a new wave for music in Bollywood. I am glad I could work on Aashiqui 2,” he ends.

Ankit shared, “We used to have a big aluminium tub where we would mix all the different colours and anyone who used to pass from our lane had to stop and take a dip in that tub. Chahe jo bhi insaan ho. Kanpur’s Holi has a different whole vibe and colour to it.”
Ankit went on to add, “Back when we used to play Holi in Kanpur, we would rub black colour on our teeth and our friends’ too which used to be so much fun.”
Ankit has lived in Mumbai for the past 15–16 years. When asked how it feels to celebrate Holi in Mumbai, the Tu Hai Ki Nahi singer shared, “The celebrations are almost the same everywhere. Even in Mumbai we go for Holika dehen. But in UP the festival doesn’t end, it goes on and on. Meanwhile, in Mumbai, there is a time till which people play Holi, and then the post-Holi party starts but for UP, yahan hoti hai huddang wali Holi. Holi ka mazaa UP mein hi aata hai!”
Talking about his journey so far, Ankit shared about the moment when he felt he had finally carved his name in the music industry. “Everybody began to know me after Aashiqui 2. I remember eating pani puri on the streets of Mumbai after the release of Aashiqui 2, where I was standing along with a group of girls and boys. They were talking in front of me about the songs from the movie and saying ‘Bahot achha gaan hai. Kaun hai ye jisne gaya hai, etc’. And I was hearing them praise my compositions and really enjoyed that moment.”
Known for his romantic songs , Ankit said he is now experimenting with other genres in his compositions and singing. “Ab toh saare genre tootenge. Now I am going to try different genres in my own compositions.”

Manoj Chaurasia (THE TIMES OF INDIA; January 11, 2022)
Patna: A 24-year-old man, who was arrested for violating Bihar’s prohibition laws, has become a celebrity of sorts overnight and is getting offers for playback singing after a song sung by him during his confinement in a police lockup in the dry state went viral on social media.
Kanhaiya Kumar was arrested by Buxur Police over the weekend for entering the border district from neighbouring Uttar Pradesh, allegedly in an inebriated condition. Kumar, a native of Bihar’s Kaimur district, had gone to UP for work and got drunk there. In dry Bihar, people are not allowed to enter after consuming alcohol and can be prosecuted.
Subsequently, Kumar was put into the police lockup and it was there that he sang a popular Bhojpuri song, “Darogajiho… Sochi-sochi jiya hamro kahe ghabrata…”, which caught the attention of many music lovers. Cops were seen appreciating his skills, and saying: “Waah, waah.”
Impressed by his mellifluous voice, Ankit Tiwari, a prominent Bollywood musician based in Mumbai, has offered Kumar to sing a song for his music company Mist Music Private Limited. “I want to give this person a chance to sing for my music company,” tweeted Tiwari, known for his ‘Aashiqui 2’ songs.
Stating that addiction is a social evil, Tiwari said art has the power to defeat it. Sources said Kumar also got a chance to sing for a music company in UP.

Vinay MR Mishra (HINDUSTAN TIMES; October 19, 2022)
Singer Ankit Tiwari was recently in for a shock when an unknown man claiming to be his fan, created mayhem inside his building premises. The man entered Tiwari’s building on Monday evening, wanting to meet the Teri Galliyan singer. He was stopped by the building’s guards and soon even Tiwari’s manager intervened. The 30-minute long confrontation, led to the man shouting, screaming and threatening to cut his wrist.
“Shocking toh tha,” says the 36-year-old, adding, “As a singer, when we perform, we get to meet a lot of different people. However, this was a bit bizarre. He said a few alarming things. He was threatening to harm himself if I didn’t meet him. I only had two options. Either I could have called the police or I could have gone down myself, to avoid any further chaos. So, I decided to step down.”
He further says, “I wasn’t particularly scared to meet him. The guards were holding on to him and trying to keep him calm. At that moment, anyone could have gotten hurt. That’s what I was worried about.”
“In fact, I spoke to him nicely, and he even apologized for creating the whole ruckus. There’s just so much negativity around us, so I felt whatever step I took, it had to be full of empathy and love,” he explains.
Tiwari, who was last seen in Smart Jodi with his wife Pallavi Tiwari, shares that even she was equally shocked, and so were the other building residents. “After the incident, they had a meeting. I have been called, but I am yet to sort out the issue,” the singer wraps up.

I’ve explored other genres, but people still associate me with love songs-Ankit Tiwari

Tanvi Trivedi (BOMBAY TIMES; May 26, 2021)
Ankit Tiwari, popularly known as the Sunn Raha Hai Tu music composer and singer from Aashiqui 2, has struggled to make a name for himself in the music world. Post Aashiqui 2, Tiwari has been known for his love songs in films such as Ek Villain and Roy. He says, “If my name is associated with love songs, I am proud of it, because to get associated with a genre is an achievement in the Indian music world. Having said that, I do want to explore other genres and have around 100 different songs in my bank.”
He adds, “A few years ago, I sang a song called Dil Cheez Tujhe Dedi from Airlift, but people were not ready to believe that it was my composition. They felt it belonged to Pritam Chakraborty. It was much later that people realised that I had composed it. The image of being a composer of love songs has stuck and I am happy about it now.”
Ankit is currently seen as a mentor for one of the teams in the music reality show Indian Pro Music League. He says, “I am junior to all the singers, who are participating in the show. Kailash Kher, Shaan, Sajid Khan and Mika Singh are all my seniors and have done a huge amount of work on television. I can never compete with them. I am new in this arena and learning my way around here.”
Ankit also had a music band, which unfortunately had to split up due to the lockdown. He says, “We are living in very uncertain times. I had some talented musicians in my band, but they had to relocate to their hometowns because there was not much work happening due to the pandemic. We are hoping for things to get better soon. If you are alive and healthy, then I consider it a blessing during these times.”

In the lieu of reality shows, Zee TV has announced a new show modelled on the Indian Premiere League, albeit for music lovers. First one to come on board, Ankit Tiwari makes his television debut with the show titled, Indian Pro Music League (IPML). "This will be my debut, and I am excited to be part of the new format," says the singer, who has been roped in as a captain to the contestants.
IPML will have six teams representing different regions of India, which will be owned by Shraddha Kapoor, Govinda, Rajkummar Rao, and Riteish Deshmukh among others. Each team will be captained by two playback singers. Following the format of a sports league, the show will have five innings where audience votes and umpire points will decide one of the teams as the league champions.
Despite the popularity of traditional shows like Indian Idol and Sa Re Ga Ma Pa, Tiwari isn't bothered by the comparisons. "There is no comparison as even the performance formats will be different. It stands apart from all other reality shows," says the singer, adding that he is in prep mode. "I have a lot to prepare before I join the team as a captain."

She will feature in the music video of Ankit Tiwari’s single “Tere Do Naina”. The video was shot in Lucknow over two days by Kookie Gulati. Kambli’s wife accuses Tiwari’s 59-year-old father of ‘deliberately brushing his hand’ against her. Ankur Tiwari says his father was punched after which he ‘blacked out’; Bangur Nagar police investigating the fracas
Sanyukta Iyer and Vijay Tagore (MUMBAI MIRROR; July 2, 2018)
Patrons at Inorbit Mall in Malad witnessed a massive ruckus on Sunday afternoon, when former India cricketer Vinod Kambli and his wife Andrea had an altercation with music composer Ankur Tiwari and his father. Ankur is the brother of Bollywood singer and music director Ankit Tiwari.
Kambli and Andrea have alleged that Tiwari’s father R K Tiwari deliberately brushed his hand against Andrea, even as the latter claimed the couple punched his 59-year-old father, and that Andrea took off her sandal to assault him.
The matter is being investigated by the Bangur Nagar police, but nobody was arrested till the time of going to press.
Mumbai Mirror spoke to Kambli, who insisted that “an old man inappropriately touched” his wife. “We were at the Game Zone in the mall around 3 pm when my wife caught hold of an old man’s hand. He had deliberately brushed his hand against her and when she caught him in the act, he pushed her away. Minutes later when we were at the food court, two men, who we assume were the man’s sons, tried to attack my wife. When I told them to back off, they told me, ‘You don’t know who we are’.”
Andrea told Mirror that she was certain the man had attempted to take “advantage of the crowds” to touch her “inappropriately”. “I was playing with my children when this guy took the opportunity to rub his hand against me. Maybe he thought nothing would happen because it was crowded. When I caught his hand, I was surprised to see this old man. He appeared embarrassed because I had caught him red-handed. He appeared scared, and said something in Hindi, on the lines that ‘I cannot do something like this’,” Andrea said. “The inappropriate touching ka zamaana is over. Such things should be dealt with strictly,” she added.
Kambli said he tweeted about the incident, after which an officer from Bandra Police Station visited his residence around 8 pm yesterday.
TIWARI’S ALLEGATIONS
Ankur Tiwari said he was at the mall with his parents, wife, and daughter. “My father, a retired bank employee, had accompanied my daughter to the Game Zone. My father told me he spotted Vinod Kambli there, and as he was walking past a woman, he blacked out,” Tiwari said.
“My father was disoriented after the attack,” Tiwari said, “He couldn’t believe he had been punched, and that a woman was screaming, accusing him of brushing his hand against her. I asked my father to identify the woman, and we realised she was Kambli’s wife.”
Rubbishing the Kamblis’s allegations that he tried to assault Andrea, Tiwari said, “I told them I wanted to speak with them, but they pushed me and hurled abuses. Kambli’s wife removed her sandal and threatened to hit me with it.”
He claimed that Kambli threatened the onlookers who had started recording the fracas on their phones. “He was abusing loudly, cursing everyone around. I asked him to speak to me politely, but he kept pushing me. His wife pushed me too. When I tried calling up the police, he snatched my phone. He even chased a woman to make sure she deleted the video recording from her phone,” Tiwari said, adding he and his father filed a complaint at Bangur Nagar Police Station around 4.30 pm.
Andrea admitted Kambli was “upset”, but according to her, it was because “nobody from the crowd tried to help”. “Vinod was upset because the onlookers were busy recording the incident. He was particularly upset with a lady who was doing the same. It was very annoying that they thought it was entertaining,” Andrea said. “When these guys were misbehaving with my wife, the onlookers were recording the incident,” Kambli said, adding it was a frightening experience for his children, Christiano and Johana.
Senior Inspector Vinay Bane from Bangur Nagar Police Station confirmed the Tiwaris had filed a complaint against Kambli and his wife.
“We are probing the matter, after which necessary action will be initiated. As of now, a non-cognisable offence has been registered.

The singer-composer will tie the knot with mechanical engineer Pallavi Shukla in Kanpur on February 23
Sanyukta Iyer (MUMBAI MIRROR; February 15, 2018)
Last October, singer-composer Ankit Tiwari’s paternal grandmother was travelling by train from Kanpur to Delhi when she met a young girl, Pallavi Shukla, who was in the same compartment. The two started chatting and hit it off instantly. Dadi knew she’d found the perfect match for her musician grandson, who according to his mother Suman Tiwari, had “no time for love” and often misses family gatherings because of work commitments.
Three months later, the Tiwaris and Shuklas are on a last-minute shopping spree for Ankit and Pallavi’s wedding. The couple will get engaged on February 20, then after the traditional haldi, sangeet and mehendi ceremonies will tie the knot in a typical North Indian shaadi on February 23 in Kanpur, followed by a reception on February 26. The families will also host a reception in Mumbai once Ankit returns from his Delhi, Chandigarh and Kolkata tours by the month-end.
“Usually weddings in our family last 10-12 days, but Ankit doesn’t have the time. His shows are booked months in advance and we worked around his dates,” Ankit’s older brother Ankur, who also manages his work, says, adding that his conservative in-laws don’t wish to share a pic of the bride-to-be before the pheras.
The couple will dance to the tunes of Ankit’s award-winning Aashiqui 2 track “Sunn Raha Hai Na Tu” as well as his other chartbusters, “Galliyan” and “O Yara”. The groom describes his first meeting with Pallavi in Mumbai as a “private and personal affair”. “Once dadi announced that Pallavi would be the family’s daughter-in-law, everyone agreed. I’m happy that the family is happy and a little nervous too. She is a very sweet and simple girl. During our first meeting there were 10 others seated between us,” Ankit laughs.
Pallavi is a mechanical engineer who has spent the last 10 years in Bangalore. “I’ve introduced her and her family to my work and life in Mumbai where she will live after marriage,” Ankit signs off.

Singer-composer Ankit Tiwari is set to start a new chapter in his life. The Sunn Raha Hai Na Tu singer will tie the knot with Pallavi Shukla, a Kanpur-based mechanical engineer, on February 23. The wedding, an intimate affair, will be held in his hometown, Kanpur. The couple will exchange rings on February 20 and a reception will be held on the 26th.
Ankit tells us, “It’s an arranged match. Pallavi and I were introduced to each other by our parents around a month ago. I liked her simplicity and the way she bonded with my parents, especially with my father. She is his choice. Pallavi is an educated girl with high family values. I am from a middle-class family and I wanted a partner jo parivaar ko saath lekar chale.”
Pallavi is also a fan of Ankit’s music and her favourite composition of his is Galliyan (Ek Villain). Does she also like to sing? “Usko gaana gaane ka shauq hai. There will be music sessions during all the rituals and don’t be surprised if I sing her favourite number.”
Ankit, who was accused of rape in 2013 and acquitted last year, says Pallavi has no hang-ups about his past. “We met before the marriage was finalised and I discussed everything with her. Her parents were also made aware of everything right from the start. Ab zamaana bahut aage badh chuka hai. Aaj bhi log discussion kar sakte hain, I can’t stop them. What’s important is ki jiske saath mein judne wala hoon, nothing is hidden from her and her family. I didn’t need to justify myself to her,” he says.
A get-together with industry friends will be held in Mumbai later. Here’s wishing the soon-to-wed couple all the very best for a melodious beginning.

London-based actress is all set to feature in an upcoming music video which is an Arabic dance number
Sanyukta Iyer (MUMBAI MIRROR; December 23, 2017)
When “Sunn Raha Hai” and “Galliyan” hitmaker Ankit Tiwari wanted to take an Arabic dance number from his bank of film songs and convert it into a racy music video, he thought of London-based Amy Jackson. The 25-year-old actress had been flying in and out of the country to wrap up her portions in S Shankar’s 2.0 alongside Rajinikanth and Akshay Kumar and wanted to listen to the song first. “She loved it and instantly said yes,” a source close to the development told Mirror, adding that the song was extensively shot in the snow-capped mountains of the Central Asian country of Kyrgyzstan.
The video, which is produced by the singer-composer’s brother Ankur Tiwari, had been composed a while ago, but conceptualizing it and locking Amy’s dates took three months. A unit of over a dozen technicians was flown down to Bishkek, where Sanjay Dutt and Nargis Fakhri are presently filming their upcoming thriller-drama, Torbaaz, for a week-long shoot. “The country is opening up its locations to Bollywood and welcomed our team whole-heartedly to explore rare locations. Amy will be seen in belly-dancing costumes with fur coats thrown over, alongside Ankit in the song,” the source added.
Three months ago, Ankit had released the single “Tum Hardafa Ho”, which had featured him alongside Miss India 2015, Aditi Arya. The Times Music romantic track had been written by Abhendra Kumar Upadhyay with Ankit behind the console and female vocals by Leena Bose. “To take the ‘singles’ movement to another level, Ankit wanted to sing and feature in a completely different track from his earlier release. He will release three-four more singles in quick succession through 2018,” the source signed off.
Leave the stage and mic to us, that’s our playground not yours: Singers open up about actors singing songs
7:52 AM

Sanyukta Iyer (MUMBAI MIRROR; August 31, 2017)
Ever since its advent, social media has served as a great equaliser — Bollywood celebs share glimpses of their everyday life alongside their fans — and an enabler, letting everyone with an opinion voice it freely.
And while outrage is subsequently the new cool, Bollywood singers are using it to effectively rally behind a common refrain. They feel robbed of what is rightfully theirs — a sense of autonomy in their music and a more well-rounded equation with the stars they lend their voice to.
Mistaken identity
Neha Bhasin, the silken voice behind Priyanka Chopra’s burlesque act in “Assalam-E-Ishqum” from Gunday and the lilting “Jag Ghoomeya” from Sultan, expressed her disappointment not so long ago. “A little respect for the music industry wouldn’t hurt anybody. We are where we are with credibility and integrity,” she argued. The 34-year-old singer who rose to fame as part of a girl band which grew out of a 2002 reality show, was among the first to address the issue.
Composer-lyrcist Armaan Malik noted that he was mistaken for his singer brother Amaal Mallik by the media and leading actors at a comically alarming frequency. At an awards show, Aditi Singh Sharma, who lent her voice to the title track of Dhoom 3, was also mistaken for the “Baby Doll” hitmaker Kanika Kapoor.
Meanwhile, Armaan addressed the trend of actors taking up singing gigs for their films and also the much coveted opening act spots for international performers like Coldplay and Justin Bieber. “Leave the stage and mic to us, that’s our playground not yours,” he had said. He was seconded by Kailash Kher.
The lip-sync battle
Ayushmann Khurrana, a singer-VJ before Vicky Donor, acknowledges that many singers strongly believe actors shouldn’t sing. He asserts that there are only two others of his kind, Farhan Akhtar and Diljit Dosanjh, so singers should not be insecure. “In India, we consume music visually. We would listen to a song more if Salman Khan was lip-syncing to it than Arijit Singh,” he explains, adding that an actor like him realises his limitations as a singer. “In Dum Laga Ke Haisha, ‘Moh Moh Ke Dhage’ was a classical song. I’d never attempt that. It’ll always be Papon’s.”
Ankit Tiwari, who composed and sung “Galliyan” for Ek Villain, which also had a reprised version by Shraddha Kapoor, admitted that technology has made it simpler to tune voices and use singles for promotional purposes.
Assembly line
Ankit reveals that he’s met producers who’ve asked him to “get inspired” by certain songs before making new music. “As a result, most of our songs end up sounding the same. Unlike the West, where the final song is the singers’ alone, in Bollywood, everyone from the producer, director to the composer has a say,” he grouses, noting that if producers encourage non-filmi, pop songs with videos, it’ll change the face of music in India.
“Ours is an industry driven by superstars. They are the face of not only films, but also songs. Singers merely give playback. In commercial cinema, everyone wants to promote songs with known faces. So the need of the hour is to have singers and composers acknowledged at music launches,” the voice behind “Go Go Govinda” and “Jaaneman Aah”, Aaman Trikha, says.
To market, to market
Trikkha iterates that overseas, every artist is self-sufficient because of strategically cut out deals with music labels. “They have support from music labels with the commercial aspects of their work. They do promotional tours, gain fans and popularity. So what they invest in, they earn it back. This set-up doesn’t exist in India at all!” Aaman rants, adding the system needs to be changed from the origin up.
“Paani Da Rang” composer Rochak Kohli brings up a crucial argument, “The royalty system in the West is sorted and efficient. Not only singers and makers, but also programmers, engineers, musicians earn royalties. There’s a need for this in India if a strong, independent music industry is to be developed.”
Royalty matters
Kavita Seth admits that mutual trust and understanding between the fraternities is the ideal scenario but today’s world only understands the language of legal documents. And technicians suffer in the absence of a royalties system. Meanwhile, Ankit Tiwari recalls an event that gave him a new perpective on the status quo. “I was to perform at a charity event and was taken aback to learn that some of the funds raised was meant for senior technicians on strings, bass and dholaks and other recording artists from the ’70s–’80s who have no source of income today. Some of these technicians worked on key notes in 'Mere Rashke Qamar', which I remixed for Baadshaho, as well as the originals of other recent remixes, 'Keh Doon Tumhe' and 'Hamma Hamma'". Veteran singers Shaan and Sonu Nigam admit that the number of song offers has dwindled ever since they brought up royalty. “Even at the age of 50–60, musicians have to perform live to stay afloat. How is that fair? If I, as an accomplished singer, don’t use my work to fight for what’s right, who will?” Sonu asks.
Lyrics of Sunny Leone's Baadshaho song altered to avoid copyright issues

Sunny Leone’s special song “Piya More” with Emraan Hashmi in Baadshaho won’t sound the same anymore. Mirror has learnt that the lyrics of the song have been changed following allegations by filmmaker Jay Prakash, who claims it’s copied from the song “Nasha Sar Pe Chadke Bole” from his 2014 film, Dee Saturday Night. The filmmaker had threatened to take the matter to court for copyright infringement.
Incidentally, both songs were composed by Ankit Tiwari, while Mika and Neeti Mohan have given playback for “Piya More”. The hook line of the Baadshaho version has now been changed from “Haule Haule” to “Slowly Slowly”. While Tiwari chose not to comment, a spokesperson for Baadshaho told Mirror that the decision was taken in order to avoid further controversies. “Ankit Tiwari undertook the task to resolve an issue from his earlier composition which resembled the song 'Piya More' slightly. When he failed to do so, the filmmakers decided to make the necessary changes to avoid conflict,” the spokesperson revealed.
Incidentally, lyrics of another Baadshaho number, the new version of the 1975 Deewar hit “Keh Doon Tumhe” also had to be altered following a judgment passed by the division bench of the Mumbai High Court on Monday, where Rajiv Rai, who has the rights to the original, won the case. The spokesperson said, “T-Series had bought the rights to recreate 'Keh Doon Tumhe' from Universal, which included underlying rights. The court ruled that Universal can’t sell the underlying rights. So the court order was obeyed.

Producer claims Piya More from Emraan Hashmi-starrer has been lifted from Nasha Sar Pe from Dee Saturday Night
Upala KBR (DNA; July 27, 2017)
Filmmaker Jai Prakkash has claimed that the number has been lifted from a lesser-known song, Nasha Sar Pe Chadke Bole, from his film Dee Saturday Night (2014). Tiwari has composed both the songs.
Speaking to mid-day, Prakash said, “I was shocked when I heard Piya More, it’s the same as Nasha Sar Pe Chadke Bole.” The director further elaborates that this is a case of copyright infringement. “They [makers of Baadshaho] must have asked Ankit to compose an item song and he conveniently lifted Ankit the song from my film. Ankit must have thought, ‘Film kisiko maloom nahi hai, producer flop baitha hua hai, kaun action lega?’”
Prakash has decided to take legal recourse. “I discussed the matter with Ashoke Pandit (vice president of IMPPA) and other members of the committee. They insisted that I take legal action.” He adds, “I’m shocked that people like Bhushan Kumar, Ajay Devgn and Milan Luthria, who are spending Rs 100 crore on the film, cannot [get their composer to] create another [original] song! I’ll take legal action against them and stop the movie’s release, if need be.”
When mid-day reached out to Tiwari, he said, “The two songs are definitely not similar. If you get a music expert to listen to both songs, he’ll tell you about [the difference in their] tunes and chord progression.”
Vinod Bhanushali, [president, T-Series] says the company approved the song composed by Tiwari and included it in the film. “How would I know if the music composer has sent us a tune which is similar [to an existing song]? Mr Jai Prakkash should ideally contact Ankit Tiwari."

Neha Maheshwri and Seema Mattoo (BOMBAY TIMES; May 9, 2017)
Barely a few days after the
Mumbai Sessions Court acquitted singer Ankit Ti wari in a 2014 rape
case citing lack of evidence, the complainant said that she was planning
to move the High Court to reopen the case. Talking to BT last week
(edition dated May 3), she said that her decision was prompted by the
post-acquittal statements made by Ankit and his brother, Ankur.
According to the complainant, the brothers had signed a document promising that they would
not speak about the case or her in the media.
Now, Ankit has reacted to her claim saying that he had never signed any document. He also denied being in a relationship with the woman or committing to marriage. Ankit and Ankur spoke to BT about the trauma of the three-yearlong trial and more...
'IT WAS PURE FRIENDSHIP'
Ankit says, “I never spoke about the case during the trial. I opened up only after I was acquitted by the honourable court. And even then, all I said was that I had complete faith in the judiciary. Having said that, we haven't given her any written acknowledgement. I first met her during Durga Puja celebrations in 2013. We were introduced by a mutual acquaintance and exchanged numbers. Then we started meeting as friends and going out for coffee. From my side, it was pure friendship. There was no shaadi ki baat. In fact, she had lied to me about her marital status, but since I was not romantically interested in her, it didn't matter. There was no physical intimacy between us. This feels like a film script. Ek script nayi nayi taiyyar kee jaa rahi hai. Her version has changed at least four times.“ Ankit adds, “The first notice that I received was different from the FIR, which was again different from what was mentioned before the court. And now, all of it is different from what is being reported. Rape is a serious offence and it becomes even more serious when it involves a celebrity. It is to be noted that she lodged the complaint only after I became popular.“
'NO GRUDGES, NO COMPLAINTS'
Talking about the three-year-long trial, the composer-singer says, “It was extremely tough. I faced many problems and lost out on projects. I was a very positive person till this incident occurred. It also made me realise the value of family. I could not face my parents; when the case was going on, I didn't speak at all. I spoke only after my acquittal, but I'm being put to trial even now. I have no grudges or complaints against her or anyone else. It's unfortunate that people are believing a scripted story and that too, after my acquittal. Main khud ko toh sambhaal loonga, but mummy daddy ko kaise sambhaaloon?“ About the complainant's allegations that she had supported him financially during his days as a struggler, Ankit says, “My struggle has been graceful. Yes, I have taken money from family, but never from outsiders.“
ALL SET FOR A SECOND INNINGS
Ankit says that he wants to restart life and his career on a positive note. “All I know is that I have to work hard and get cracking again, which I will. My priority is my work. I am shattered, but can't let my family see it. I have to keep smiling for their sake. After this incident, I am scared to even meet friends who are girls. However, they supported me during the trial. In fact, they still come home to meet me since I don't go out much and was never the partying kind. I am not interested in anyone and will let my mother decide about my marriage.“
I DON'T WANT TO REACT TO SOMEONE'S COOKED-UP STORY: ANKUR TIWARI
Ankit's brother Ankur, who was also accused of threatening the complainant, says that
contrary to her claims, she never visited Ankit's parents with a marriage proposal. Ankur says, “She could have visited our parents in Kanpur as a friend,
but it is not on record. Why are we being asked about it now? All these
complaints started only after Ankit became popular. I don't want to
react to someone's cooked-up story. Kal sadak se uth kar koi bhi kuchh
bhi bolega toh main apna kaam dekhunga ki answer doonga? The latest
development has affected us, especially since we have been acquitted.“
THERE APPEARS TO BE NO GROUND FOR REOPENING THIS CASE: ANKIT'S LAWYER
Rizwan Merchant, who is defending the Ankit and Ankur, says, “The complainant's problem is that she doesn't want to be declared hostile, but she has stepped in the witness box once and told the court that Ankit and she were just friends. She said that they knew each other and used to go out for parties. If she now claims that she was pressured by the other party to take the case back, why didn't she complain to the court at that time itself? Had that been the case, any court would have cancelled the bail and they would have been taken into custody. There was no physical relationship at all and that's been our line of defence. Also, there is no mention of rape in the first handwritten complaint submitted by her. In that, she has mentioned consensual relationship. However, we have not even admitted to that. And if you say consensual, it can't be rape. And if it was rape, it couldn't have been consensual. There appears to be no ground for reopening this case.“

After music composer-singer Ankit Tiwari was acquitted of rape charges recently, the complainant, who turned hostile, says she will now move the High Court
Neha Maheshwri (BOMBAY TIMES; May 3, 2017)
Barely six days after the
Mumbai sessions acquitted court composer-singer Ankit Tiwari of rape
charges levelled by a woman in March 2014, the latter has decided to
move the Bombay High Court to reopen the case. Ankit was acquitted on
April 27 after the complainant turned hostile and the prosecution failed
to gather enough evidence against him. Apparently, the singer and his
brother Ankur's statements to the
media after their acquittal has irked her.
The complainant says, “I decided to withdraw the case after fighting for almost a year, as Ankit and his family pleaded saying that it was affecting his career. My family and husband (she got married in 2015) were pressured by them and their lawyer, Neeraj Gupta. I agreed and in return, asked them to apologize to my parents, who were insulted by them. I also got it in writing that they would never give a statement - direct or indirect - against me or on the case once they were acquitted, failing which I would be free to initiate any legal action I deem fit. They have not only tried to tarnish my image by claiming that they are innocent, but have also gone all out to prove that the case was false.“
Ask her if she has been paid any monetary compensation and she replies, “I haven't been paid a single penny. I withdrew the case with good intent, but their behaviour has angered me. I have now decided to take the case ahead. I will file a re-petition before the High Court in a week to reopen the case. I have enough proof to establish my case.“
The woman, who Ankit was allegedly dating then, had filed a case against him in March 2014 for sexually assaulting her several times between October 2012 and December 2013 after promising to marry her. She had also filed a case against Ankur for threatening her. Ankit was subsequently arrested by the Mumbai Police on May 8, 2014 and later let out on bail.
Recalling the event, she says, “He saw me at an event and asked an acquaintance for my number. He developed a liking for me and we met a few times as friends. When I invited him to my place on my sister's birthday, he offered me a drink and had sex with me. It wasn't consensual the first time. When I confronted him, he promised to marry me. In fact, my family even met his parents in his hometown Kanpur, but were humiliated by them. Soon after, Ankit threatened me saying that he will circulate an intimate video clip of me with him. His brother also threatened me.“
When contacted, Ankit directed us to his lawyer Rizwan Merchant, who remained unavailable till the time of going to press.
LEGAL VIEW
We spoke to Advocate Yusuf Iqbal Yusuf to understand if a complainant can approach a higher court after turning hostile and here's what he had to say: “Under Indian laws, serious offences such as rape, murder and kidnapping are offences against the State. Therefore, once an FIR is registered on the complaint of a victim/first informant/witness, the State becomes the Prosecutor and the victim/first informant becomes one of the witnesses. During a criminal trial, the evidence of the witness is recorded. It is the bounden duty of the witness to speak the truth since the evidence is recorded under oath. If a witness is untruthful, then he/she becomes liable to be prosecuted for perjury. One of the recent high-profile cases was the Jessica Lall murder case where several witnesses turned hostile and the Delhi High Court directed that they should be prosecuted. Sections 191 to 205 and also 213 and 214 of the Indian Penal Code deal with giving false evidence and screening of offenders. If the survivor was under any threat or subjected to intimidation, then she would be excused if she can show such threat and if she comes forward and gives truthful evidence now. However, if there was any agreement or understanding pursuant to which she turned hostile, then she would face prosecution for giving false evidence. On the other hand, if the new evidence which she comes forward with is credible, then the acquittal of Ankit Tiwari could be set aside.“
