Producers and CBFC get notice over Aankh Micholi for mocking disabilities

New Delhi: The court of the chief commissioner for persons with disabilities (CCPD) has issued notice to the film producers and the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) seeking a reply on the content mocking various types of disabilities in the Hindi film ‘Aankh Micholi’. Disability rights groups have raised concern over the narrative of the comedy film that was released earlier this month.

Taking suo-motu cognisance of the matter, a notice was issued on Friday by deputy chief commissioner (disabilities), P P Ambashta to the directors of the companies involved in the production of the film. A reply has also been sought from the CEO of CBFC and the secretary of information and broadcasting ministry.

It is stated in the notice that the CCPD has taken cognizance of the fact that the film, produced by Merry Go Round Studios and Culver Max Entertainment Pvt Ltd and certified for public view by CBFC, mocks disabilities specified under the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016, such as speech and language disability, hearing impairment, visual impairment and intellectual disability.

The CCPD has cited the law that says “no person with disability shall be discriminated against on the ground of disability, unless it is shown that the impugned act or omission is a proportionate means of achieving a legitimate aim”.

Against this backdrop, the CCPD has sought that the filmmakers and the approving authorities get the matter inquired into and forward their comments along with remedial action taken within 10 days of receipt of the notice.

THE TIMES OF INDIA (November 9, 2023)

Panaji: The office of the state commissioner for persons with disabilities on Wednesday strongly recommended to the collectors of both districts to ban the Hindi film “Aankh Micholi” for mocking disabled people.

The commissioner said that the film violates sections 3 and 7 of the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016.

Section 3 mandates that the government ensure people with disabilities enjoy the right to equality, and life with dignity and respect.

Section 7 offers safeguards against abuse, violence, and exploitation.

The Disability Rights Association of Goa (DRAG) had complained to the commission. It has also urged the police to file criminal complaints under Section 92 of the 2016 act against the film’s producer, director, and stars for mocking persons with disabilities.

The president of the association, Avelino de Sa, has written to the ministries of information and broadcasting and social justice demanding the immediate removal of the chairperson of the censor board for issuing a certification to the film.

He said showing persons with disabilities in bad light nullifies efforts of central and state governments, and non-governmental organisations to empower them.

(Crisp) Movie Review: AANKH MICHOLI by FENIL SETA

Aankh Micholi has a premise that reminds one of the comic capers of the 90s and early 2000s. This could have made for a laugh-a-minute riot. The film starts on a shaky note but gets better just before the interval. The intermission point is unexpected. The second half, however, has limited humour. The climax is ridiculous. It is supposed to be serious but it led to more (unintentional) laughter than the scenes that were meant to be funny! Abhimanyu Dassani is okay but Mrunal Thakur is superb. Divya Dutta is the best performer in the film. Paresh Rawal is dependable but he was not upto the mark in the initial scenes. Sharman Joshi, Abhishek Banerjee and Darshan Jariwala are okay. Vijay Raaz tries his best to raise laughs. All in all, Aankh Micholi is avoidable.

My rating - * ½ out of 5!

Fenil's Bollywood Talk # 802

12TH FAIL IS A SLEEPER HIT; NEW RELEASES TO FACE A TOUGH TIME

The last week was bittersweet for the industry. Tejas tanked horribly and it’ll be a miracle if it manages to collect around Rs. 8 crores at the box office. Sajini Shinde Ka Viral Video was a bigger disaster as it collected just Rs. 7 lakhs on the first day. The film will struggle to reach even Rs. 60 lakhs in its lifetime.

However, 12th Fail has emerged as one of the biggest surprises of 2023. Not much was expected from it but on the first day, it collected Rs. 1 crore. It saw an insane jump as it collected Rs. 2.40 crores on Saturday and Rs. 2.85 crores on Sunday. Monday was better than Friday when the film collected Rs. 1.10 crores. On Tuesday, collections increased to Rs. 1.25 crore instead of dropping. If all goes well, it’ll end up collecting nearly Rs. 25 crores. Pre-Diwali is a very dry period for films and 12th Fail and Vijay’s Tamil film Leo have proved to be good fillers in cinemas before the big festival.

Tomorrow will see the release of Aankh Micholi. It stars Paresh Rawal, Abhimanyu, Mrunal Thakur, Sharman Joshi, Divya Dutta, Vijay Raaz, Abhishek Banerjee, Grusha Kapoor and Darshan Jariwala and is directed by Umesh Shukla of OMG Oh My God and 102 Not Out fame. The shoot of this comic caper was completed in March 2020, just before the lockdown. The film took a long time to release and is one of the most delayed films after Brahmastra and Maidaan. It was going to be released on October 27 but was pushed by a week as the previous Friday was crowded.

Aankh Micholi seems like a fun, old-school entertainer but the awareness is near-zero. Hence, it’ll struggle to open just like last week's films. With just 9 days left for Diwali, the aam junta will be busy with pre-Diwali chores, shopping etc than watching a film. Hence, the lean period coupled with negligible buzz will prove detrimental. However, the film will find takers on television later on.

The other Hindi release of the week is The Lady Killer. It is directed by Ajay Bahl of BA Pass and Section 375 fame and stars Arjun Kapoor and Bhumi Pednekar. The film will be released in hardly 3-4 theatres in Mumbai and a few more cities. It is a token release since the makers have recovered the amount from the sale of digital and TV rights. But as per the conditions, they need to give it a theatrical release. As a result, it’s a case of releasing it on the big screen for the heck of it. The makers aren’t promoting it at all and have simply uploaded the trailer of the film. Arjun and Bhumi reportedly are upset with such a release and have not posted about the film on their social media handles.

Lastly, Shastry Virudh Shastry will also arrive in cinemas. It has got a better release than The Lady Killer but it won’t matter much.

‘Hota hai yaar, what can you do?’, asks Abhimanyu Dassani on delay in film release

Rishabh Suri (HINDUSTAN TIMES; January 31, 2022)

Abhimanyu Dassani, like other actors, had intended to have a substantial filmography by now, given that he made his debut in 2018. But, he presently has only two to his credit. Reason? The pandemic. “Haan yaar, hota hai. What can I or you do?” he laments, adding, “It’s very uncertain. There isn’t much that one can do to improve the situation.”

This year, on the brighter side, two of his films, Nikamma and Aankh Micholi, are expected to be released. Dassani shares, “Why focus on things that you can’t change? Jo hoga acche ke liye hoga.”

The 31-year-old goes on to share that he, in fact, did have a word with Nikamma’s producers, in which he stars with Shilpa Shetty Kundra and Shirley Setia, about the film’s fate. “They said they were figuring it out. I said, ‘Don’t worry, it’s your film. You decide and let me know. If you all want me to be part of the discussion, I will be there to give my two cents, whatever your options are’,” shares Dassani, whose most recent release was the OTT film Meenakshi Sundareshwar.

On the personal front, he is choosing to be at home and preparing for his projects. “The government has been juggling (reworking protocols), dates of films are being rescheduled time and again... So, you have to be patient about everything. I am sure all the producers will work things out. Since I didn’t have shoots in the near future, I’ve been training for the next thing I’m doing, researching about my character and attending readings over video calls,” he shares.

So, what kept him going? “For seven weeks, Meenakshi Sundareshwar was trending worldwide. It was overwhelming,” he signs off.

For me, it doesn’t matter if people see me on the big screen or their mobile phones-Abhimanyu Dassani

Onkar Kulkarni (BOMBAY TIMES; January 16, 2022)

Abhimanyu Dassani made quite an impression with his debut film Mard Ko Dard Nahi Hota (2019). In the last two years, the pandemic sent his schedule for a toss. While there would be phases when he would be at home due to the lockdown, there were also times when he had a packed schedule and shot for three films simultaneously. “It was a tough phase. I was working on three films at the same time — Nikamma, Aankh Micholi and Meenakshi Sundareshwar. I am a new actor and am not at a stage where filmmakers will shift dates for me, right? So, I was trying to be as accommodating as I could be,” says Abhimanyu.

He got a chance to work with senior actors like Shilpa Shetty in Nikamma and Paresh Rawal, Divya Dutta and Vijay Raaz in Aankh Micholi. Talking about working with them, he says, “It was very interesting to see some of these senior actors switching on and off in front of the camera. That is something I have wanted to learn. For a new actor like me, getting to see these actors doing it live was a much better experience than trying to practise it at home. ”

Abhimanyu says, “It was helpful, especially because I had to jump from one set to another and play different characters. It is a process that I am still learning. I am happy that it has helped me grow as an actor.”

Abhimanyu, who took a different path to step into the industry, with his debut movie being a festival film and his second being an OTT original, says that his aim is to surprise people with every move. “For me, it doesn’t matter if people see me on the big screen or their mobile phones. As an actor, the medium that I come on changes, but the process remains the same. Actors who say that they want to see themselves on the big screen only want to be famous. Having said that, I must add that the ability to get people to shell out that money, take out that time and travel to come to watch your film in a cinema hall is also commendable.”

My Toofaan character inspires Farhan Akhtar's character but in real life, he inspired me-Mrunal Thakur

Kavita Awaasthi (HINDUSTAN TIMES; March 20, 2021)

Mrunal Thakur is in a happy space as she is looking forward to three releases this year. “I am glad that finally, the amount of hard work that we have put in our films in 2020, will be witnessed by the audiences. My first release is Toofaan, which is close to my heart. I worked with a fabulous team including Farhan Akhtar and Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra sir and the journey, the experience, the growth, not just as an actor but also as a human, was enormous. I feel I am a different person today because of it,” says the Super 30 (2019) actor.

Thakur calls OTT platforms a blessing for those who can’t go to theatres. “Even during Coronavirus, there is a way to entertain our audiences. OTT has a huge reach global reach. As for box office success, I never took that pressure as an actor. My film is a complete package. It will entertain people but it will also inspire, allow us to never give up, and follow our dreams. We all need that one push to keep us on track and guide us on the right way. That’s what my character does. However, in real life, Farhan inspired me (laughs). It was enchanting to work with him,” she explains.

The actor has Jersey with Shahid Kapoor next, and Aankh Micholi. She will also start Pippa co-starring Ishaan Khatter soon.

The shoot for Jersey had begun in early 2020 but it had to be stalled due to the lockdown. Later, in October, right after the unlock, the unit began shooting again. Talking about the experience of shooting amid the pandemic, she says, “I was scared but the joy of being on a movie set was great. It was a long process and back then, we didn’t know what measures we needed to take. By the end of the schedule in Dehradun, we were happy to be back to work.”

People ask me why I was playing a sister and I wonder if there is a clause stating I shouldn’t-Mrunal Thakur

Mrunal Thakur insists she’d play sister and mother than turn down good scripts
Ankita Chaurasia (MUMBAI MIRROR; November 26, 2020)

After spending Diwali in Mumbai, Mrunal Thakur is back in Chandigarh with Shahid Kapoor for the last schedule of their film Jersey. “Now, you have to allot an extra week before and after for quarantine. But we are so excited, we don’t want to stop shooting,” gushes the actress.

While for many the lockdown resulted in increased social media activity, Mrunal had deleted all apps from her phone, not wanting to know who is having an OTT release, who has achieved what, bringing on increased stress and in some cases, depression too. Instead, she used the time constructively to learn cooking. “Earlier, I couldn’t even brew a cup of tea, now, I can lay out a meal. And from my 20-year-old cousin I’ve learned that intermittent fasting is upvas and a balanced Indian meal in proportion is the key to good health,” she says knowledgeably, sharing that her father did not miss going to the bank for a single day during the ongoing pandemic and her mother concocted every possible kaadha (herbal medicinal drink) to boost immunity.

She herself has been most disciplined through the downtime, going to bed by 10 pm and waking up at 5:30 am. “My parents would walk 10 laps around the house as a workout. I took yoga and strength training sessions with them, and also enrolled for ballet classes in the afternoon,” she informs, admitting her siblings, Lochan and Mandar, couldn’t wait for her to resume shooting so they could sleep in late.

Talking of siblings, she plays Ishaan Khatter and Priyanshu Painyuli’s sister in the war drama Pippa, based on Balram Singh Mehta’s book The Burning Chaffees. “People ask me why I was playing a sister and I wonder if there is a clause stating I shouldn’t. I play a mother in Jersey, after mothering two kids in an ad at 21. I’d be foolish to turn down good scripts due to such inhibitions,” she shrugs.

After she wraps up Jersey, Mrunal will get back to the Bay to prep for the Thadam remake that pairs her with Sidharth Malhotra. Her Toofaan co-star, Farhan Akhtar, has already got her training in Mixed Martial Arts so she won’t have to start from scratch. “Every morning, I practice on the beach as the sand helps with balance and engages the core. It’s helping me get the body language and mental make-up of a cop,” she avers, adding with a laugh that after ODing on Keanu Reeves in John Wick, she can’t wait to show off her action chops.

Before the lockdown, she wrapped up Umesh Shukla’s laugh riot, Aankh Micholi, revealing that she was so much in awe of co-star Paresh Rawal, she’d forget her lines at times. “He was two different people during Toofaan and Aankh Micholi,” she says, wonderstruck that she’s living out a dream that crystalised when she saw Salma Hayek’s Frida and fell in love with acting. “I had a DVD library membership even as a child and Smita Patil is my inspiration,” she shares.

It wasn’t easy getting her parents’ approval because they believe any publicity, good or bad, is to be avoided. “Now, my parents are my biggest PRs, turning misty-eyed whenever my name rolls in the end credits,” she chuckles.

Her sister is a makeup artist; Super 30 was their first film and they’ve been working together since. “After doing my dandiya, Christmas party, and annual day makeup, my sister knows my skin best and helps me push the envelope. Earlier, I was conscious about what others think, now I dress up for myself. We even create looks of characters that I want to play and put a wish out to the universe so it materialises,” she confides, adding her brother, who is just 16, wants to produce music and pursue a career in gaming. “Currently, he is building his own computer,” she concludes.

Imagine Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge as an out and out comedy and you get Aankh Micholi-Umesh Shukla

Umesh Shukla describes his current directorial as DDLJ in an out-and-out comic space
Himesh Mankad (MUMBAI MIRROR; November 3, 2020)

The director of Oh My God and 102 Not Out, Umesh Shukla, wrapped up his next, Aankh Micholi, on March 6, just before the nationwide lockdown was announced. He is currently locking the final edit. “We shot for around 15 days in Switzerland, followed by a 40-day schedule in Punjab. We are lucky to have completed the film just in time,” admits Umesh who doesn’t make films only for laughs, but also weave a social message into the narrative. “This one talks of family values, it’s a blend of magic and logic. My films are clean and devoid of darkness because I want families to enjoy them.”

Prod him for details and he says, it’s a comedy in the Yash Chopra world. “Imagine Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge as an out-and-out comedy and you get Aankh Micholi,” he quips. It features Abhimanyu Dassani and Mrunal Thakur and the director points out that his hero Abhimanyu showed spark in his comic scenes with Mahesh Manjrekar in Mard Ko Dard Nahin Hota and even Mrunal is a blend of histrionics and humour.

The film, produced by Sony Pictures Films India with Umesh’s partner, Ashish Wagh, reunites him with Paresh Rawal after OMG Oh My God and Umesh informs that the two have known each other since 1986. “I started doing backstage work for his plays. Paresh bhai liked my temperament and made me an assistant director. Then, I acted with him in a couple of plays and finally, I directed him in two-three of them. It’s because of his large heart that I am here,” he says humbly.

Paresh was recently elected as the Chairman of National School of Drama. Considering that both come from a theatre background are there any plans of collaborating on NSD. “Yes, recently we discussed changes and improvements in the current structure. He has a bound progressive plan for the future of theatre and I will help him in whatever way possible,” he promises.

Meanwhile, Umesh’s next is a biopic of Ujjwal Nikam who worked on prominent criminal cases and helped prosecute suspects in the 1993 Bombay bombings, the Gulshan Kumar murder case, the Pramod Mahajan murder case, and the 2008 Mumbai attacks, where he was the public prosecutor in Ajmal Kasab’s case. “Yes, my next is on public prosecutor, Ujjwal Nikam. The script is almost locked and I will start approaching actors soon, I am very excited,” he asserts, saying that, as a producer too, he will roll with multiple projects by early next year, one of them with Nawazuddin Siddiqui to be directed by Sejal Shah. “It’s an incredible story, you won’t believe it’s true,” he signs off.

In cinema, you are only as good as your last project-Sharman Joshi

Kavita Awaasthi (HINDUSTAN TIMES; August 5, 2020)

In his 20-year-old career, Sharman Joshi has been appreciated in a number of roles including Rang De Basanti (2006), Golmaal (2006), Life in a... Metro (2007), 3 Idiots (2009), and Ferrari Ki Sawaari (FKS; 2012), among others. And though people appreciate his talent and versatility, he has not been seen in as many films.

Joshi talks about the challenges in his profession, and says, “Choices mein galti ho gayi ho toh, please give me another chance (smiles). We are all humans and make errors. In this profession, you are only as good as your last project. Some films don’t turn out the way you expect them to. Post FKS, three of my films — War Chhod Na Yaar (2013), Gang Of Ghosts and Super Nani (both 2014), didn’t turn out the way they were on paper. That was a bit of a setback for me and disappointing, too. To emerge out of a setback, one needs a lot of effort, patience and luck. I am glad I got Mission Mangal last year.”

Having been an actor for so long, Joshi knows what it takes to make it work. Ask him about favouritism and nepotism in the industry, and he says, “To get a break in the industry can be quite exasperating and disappointing but that is the challenge all of us have taken on. It is the same with any competitive profession, including sports. In the film business, people want to work with a certain set of actors and that is fair as you want a team that is on the same page as you are and in sync with you. I can’t point fingers at someone if he or she is working constantly with one person. I did two films back-to-back with Mr (Rajkumar) Hirani and Mr (Vidhu Vinod) Chopra as they liked me as an actor and I was more than happy to be part of their films.”

Joshi is happy with the response to the second season of his web show Baarish and has a few films lined up for release including director Umesh Shukla’s Aankh Micholi. He is also looking forward to shooting filmmaker duo Abbas-Mustan’s thriller for an OTT soon. “Thrillers are their forte and I am excited about the project as I wanted to work with them,” he concludes.

If my mom spends too much time at home, she’d want me to get married-Abhimanyu Dassani

Abhimanyu Dassani on the USP of talent, being the driving force behind mom Bhagyashree’s comeback and why both his upcoming films will only release in theatres
Akash Bhatnagar (MUMBAI MIRROR; July 8, 2020)

If not for the Coronavirus-triggered lockdown, Abhimanyu Dassani’s second film, Nikamma, would have released in June. But a firm believer in ‘everything happens for a reason’, the actor used the downtime to acquire new skills.

“I learnt lathi, an Indian form of martial art, by watching videos online. Hopefully, I’ll get a chance to showcase it in an action film. I also worked on voice modulation as I like to change my voice as per the role. I don’t even have the same voice I did during my debut, Mard Ko Dard Nahin Hota,” he says, adding that he also wrote a script and hopes to be a part of it in a few years.

The actor says that he was adjusting to the lockdown, but it’s getting a bit much now. “My mom (actress Bhagyashree) was happy that I was spending time at home. But now, even my family has had enough of me,” he laughs, adding that his cooking skills have been a saviour. “I cook once every two days, and mom really enjoys it. She doesn’t tell me to cook, but just says, ‘I want to eat pasta today,’ and that is my cue,” Abhimanyu gushes. Bhagyashree is making an acting comeback with Kangana Ranaut’s Thalaivi and the actor informs that he was the driving force behind it. “She is good at what she does and this is the time when talent is getting noticed. You can look like me and still get lead roles. Also, if she spends too much time at home, she’d want me to get married,” he laughs.

About his part in Nikamma, Abhimanyu says, “It’s a coming-of-age action-comedy about a carefree boy who realises the responsibilities he has to take on for his family.” Five days of shoot is pending for the film, with two scenes and a promotional song. Many filmmakers are heading to Ramoji Film City in Hyderabad to resume shoots. Will the Nikamma team follow suit? “Who would do a 14-day quarantine for a five-day shoot? It’s better to wait for two weeks and complete it in Mumbai,” he responds, adding that both Nikamma and his next, Aankh Micholi (a family comedy revolving around a wedding), will wait for a theatrical release. “It feels good to have the producers’ confidence in our work. These are the types of movies you’d like to watch in theatres. Good family comedies haven’t come out in a while, and there is nothing releasing before Aankh Micholi this year,” he asserts, confident that theatres in India will open by Diwali.

Abhimanyu is all praise for Nikamma co-star Shilpa Shetty, hailing her as “a guardian, both on and off screen”. “She helped me mould myself into a new genre, worked out with me every day and even monitored what I ate during the Lucknow shoot. I have made a friend for life,” he smiles. Abhimanyu, who misses playing football in the rain, admits that he wants to do a sports film. “The dedication, sacrifice and discipline required to be a sportsperson, is unparalleled. I’d jump at the opportunity of doing one. I am even willing to wait outside filmmakers’ offices,” he insists, adding, “Unfortunately, I don’t look like Bhaichung Bhutia or Sunil Chhetri, but I would love to do a film on football. Even Virat (Kohli) has had an amazing journey, or maybe Dhanraj Pillay, although I don’t have long hair.”

I played a mother of two when I was 18-Mrunal Thakur

Mrunal Thakur on her dream run at the movies and playing Shahid Kapoor’s better half, mother to a young boy in the Jersey remake
Himesh Mankad (MUMBAI MIRROR; April 2, 2020)

Mrunal Thakur admits that 2019 was a dream year for her. The actress grabbed eyeballs with her performances in Super 30, a biopic on math whiz Anand Kumar, and the cop-drama Batla House. She is still in touch with both her co-stars, Hrithik Roshan and John Abraham respectively, who are very encouraging and appreciative of her work. “I can’t believe, it’s almost a year since I shot for both films,” Mrunal admits, adding that after the encouraging reviews, the responsibility of delivering consistently has increased.

The actress has two sports-dramas coming up this year—the first one being the official remake of Nani’s Telugu hit, Jersey, with Shahid Kapoor. “He’s a sweetheart and always supportive,” says Mrunal, who has watched the original and now, when on the set, is often consulted by the director for inputs.

The Gowtam Tinnanuri directorial sees the protagonist—a retired cricketer trying to make it to the national teamage from his early 20s to mid-30s. Shahid and Mrunal play parents to a young boy and the actress is unfazed by the prospect of on-screen motherhood. “I’ve met girls who had kids in their early 20s. Even I played a mom of two in a commercial when I was 18. It’s just acting,” she says nonchalantly.

There’s also Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra’s Toofaan, which features Farhan Akhtar as a boxer and Mrunal as his ladylove. “We shot most of the film in one go in Mumbai so the flow wouldn’t break,” she informs. “My character has a certain graph, and music is helping me prep.” The song “Her Grace” by Maverick Sabre allows her to live out the character and underlines the film’s vibe. “Music is my biggest weapon on a set,” she says, acknowledging that the challenge while juggling Jersey and Toofan was to make both characters distinctly different. “It’s tough to do one thing in different ways.”

The actress ends the year with a quirky comedy, Umesh Shukla’s Aankh Micholi, which rides on an ensemble cast, including Paresh Rawal, Abhimanyu Dassani, Sharman Joshi and Divya Dutta. “We completed the film in two chunks, in Europe and Patiala. It’s a fun film where characters with great flaws come together under one roof. Watch out for our mad house,” she signs off with a laugh.

I’d known about Shilpa Shetty’s big news for a while-Abhimanyu Dassani

Abhimanyu Dassani knows how to keep a secret, is unfazed when he doesn’t have a release for over a year... and other things that make him different
Akash Bhatnagar (MUMBAI MIRROR; February 25, 2020)

On Saturday, Abhimanyu Dassani brought in his 26th birthday on the Patiala sets of his third film, Aankh Micholi. Pointing out that he’s had a working birthday for the last three years, he says, “I guess it’s a tradition now and I love it.” He got his birthday present a week in advance, in the form of a Filmfare Black Lady, as Best Debutant for Mard Ko Dard Nahi Hota. He received the trophy from mom Bhagyashree, who’d bagged it herself in 1990 for Maine Pyar Kiya. “I was nervous, more so when I learnt that she would present it—I knew she’d cry on stage, irrespective of who won,” he laughs.

Abhimanyu has been away from the screen for over a year, but he is patience personified. “I am happy as long as I am working. We first screened Mard Ko Dard Nahi Hota in August 2018 and it released in India in March 2019,” he points out, adding that he was worried when the film didn’t have a producer and there was talk of it being shelved mid-shoot.

The actor has two films up for release this year—Nikamma, with Shilpa Shetty and Shirley Setia and Aankh Micholi with Mrunal Thakur and Paresh Rawal. He is shooting for the latter and “treating it as my acting workshop and not a movie”. Abhimanyu is excited about meeting Shilpa’s daughter, Samisha, who was born on February 15. “As soon as I get half a day off, I am going to Delhi to spend time with her. I’d known about Shilpa’s big news for a while now,” he admits.

In his first film, Abhimanyu was introduced as an action hero. Ask him if he views Tiger Shroff, who has established himself in the genre, as competition, and he shrugs, “Tiger is already a superstar, a great stuntman and a gymnast. He has taken action to the next level and paved the way for people like us. I am an actor, now exploring roles outside of action.”

Speaking of venturing out of one genre, Abhimanyu points out, “My first was a festival film, the second is a commercial entertainer, the third, a comedy and the fourth, a romance.” He’d like to work with Ayan Mukerji, Neeraj Pandey, Abhishek Chaubey, Zoya Akhtar and reunite with Vasan Bala. “Also, Alia Bhatt. I love everything that she does.”

Image: This Diwali, play Aankh Micholi with this crazy, hilarious family

(L-R) Paresh Rawal, Divya Dutta, Darshan Jariwala, Abhimanyu, Mrunal Thakur, Vijay Raaz, Abhishek Banerjee, Sharman Joshi, Grusha Kapoor and child artist Ricky Patel

BOMBAY TIMES (February 20, 2020)

Director-producer Umesh Shukla and Sony Pictures Films India have joined hands for a hilarious family entertainer, Aankh Micholi. The film features Abhimanyu and Mrunal Thakur in the lead. Abhimanyu had recently won the Filmfare Best Debut Actor award, and this will be his second outing with the studio.

Apart from the two, the film, which will be shot across India and Europe, has an impressive line-up of actors, including Paresh Rawal, Sharman Joshi, Divya Dutta, Abhishek Banerjee, Darshan Jariwala, Grusha Kapoor and Vijay Raaz. It has been written by Jitendra Parmar.

Vivek Krishnani, Managing Director, Sony Pictures Entertainment India, says, “As a studio, we are always looking out for engaging and riveting stories that can not only charm the audience, but also evoke strong emotions. With such a stellar ensemble and Umesh in the driver’s seat, this Diwali will truly be a rib-tickling roller-coaster ride for viewers worldwide.” Umesh Shukla shares, “Aankh Micholi is close to my heart and I am proud to have been able to bring such an exciting cast together. Since it’s a family entertainer, we thought of releasing it on Diwali, and I can promise that the audience will be in for a laugh riot.”

Aankh Micholi, produced by Sony Pictures Films India, Umesh Shukla and Ashish Wagh’s Merry Go Round Studios, is scheduled to release this Diwali
