That dress felt like love at first sight-Sophia Banks on most searched outfit on Google, worn by Priyanka Chopra at Oscars

Priyanka Chopra’s LA stylist looks back at her Oscar gown that became 2016's most searched outfit on Google
Mohar Basu (MID-DAY; December 20, 2016)
Barely a few hours before her Oscar stage debut, Priyanka Chopra had told us, “I am pretty stuck on white”, sounding confident about her red carpet outing. Ten months on, the dress was voted as 2016's most searched outfit on Google. Sophia Banks, the actress’ stylist in Los Angeles, says, “We are thrilled. She is a style icon in the US and this is just the beginning.” Quizzed about the ‘white’ fixation, she explains, “White was an on-trend colour. That dress felt like love at first sight.” The ‘naked’ gown by Lebanese fashion designer Zuhair Murad was an instant hit on the red carpet. The foreign press wrote flattering stories about Priyanka. Says Banks, “She had actually worn a few Zuhair Murad outfits earlier, but none of them was a classic couture gown. We were able to select a bunch of looks straight off the Paris runway. But, somehow, our heart was set on this one. Then came the jewellery — the Lorraine Schwartz diamonds worth millions of dollars which we agonised over, but it just looked perfect together.”
Presenting at the Oscars was a big deal for her and in between shooting for Quantico on weekdays, Baywatch on weekends and promoting Jai Gangaajal during the Oscar appearance week, she took time out to greenlight her look. “At Oscars, billions across the globe were going to watch her. We did fittings twice in Montreal. We took many photos, made alterations and discussed at length which dress would make it [to the Oscar stage].”
A section of desis sneered at her for not choosing something more Indian, but Banks says, “She often misses Indian clothes and accessories. But, her goal is to don top level international fashion. However, she is not someone who will lose connect with her roots.”

Namrata Zakaria (MUMBAI MIRROR; March 1, 2016)
If like me, you thought Priyanka Chopra was just blah at the Academy Awards last night, kudos to the rising American star. Because that's what the 34-year-old really is in the USA. A new actor, brown-skinned, confused accent and a mightily popular TV show that launched her into every home in Hicksville. And that's what Ms Chopra is trying to break away from.
That explains her choice of Zuhair Murad. My friends Tarun Tahiliani, Varun Bahl and Wendell Rodricks would have sold a kidney to put their frocks on Chopra, but the lady was taking no chances. No siree. I would have wagered she would choose either Murad or Elie Saab or even Armani Prive, three men whose precious princesses reign over the red carpets. Chopra's fail-safe couture choice was honestly a good career move, she didn't want to turn a head for the wrong reasons. Like Freida Pinto before her, Chopra wants to appear as an actor of any origin. They're Indian alright, but as global as the next girl.
That said, that dress is a beaut. Gauzy and wispy, embroidered as it were really fine Chantilly, with a nude underdress that floats over her curvacaous slimness. Her Grecian belt was a stunning new accessory, further cinching in her tiny waist and giving the dress a columnar sophistication. Her lush hair is pulled back in an easy pony, spot on with the au courant hairstyles that say I-did-this-at-home. The actor wore bridal designer Monique Ihuiller heels to match her wedding-gown style, a Rauwolf clutch and jewellery by Lorraine Schwartz worth 8 million dollars (don't worry, the actors' outfits and jewellery is a loan).
Her diamond-drop earrings, estimated at $3 million, are also Oscar staples. Imagine if she donned Sonam Kapoor-style chaand-baalis that touched her shoulders, she would arguably appear as if she arrived on horse-drawn carriage, not a stretching black Rolls Royce. The actor's attempt clearly seems to blend in with the poshness and polish that Oscars demand. Nothing exotic about Chopra. As someone on Twitter pointed out, in the inclusion debate between the white and the black, this brown girl had all the fun.

Dev Patel is going to be one of the key presenters at
the Oscars this year. The actor, best known for his Slumdog Millionaire
performance like his ex-girlfriend Freida Pinto, has made a place for
himself in American films and television shows.
While the details of his presentation are being kept hush-hush, it is believed that he will be presenting one of the major categories that night and is also believed to be doing it slightly differently.
Dev was in India in December to promote his film Ramanujan : The Man Who Knew Infinity that opened at IFFI in Goa. The film will release in India on April 29 this year.
No matter what my choice, there will also be critique-Priyanka Chopra

Priyanka Chopra on the outfit that she’s going to wear to the Oscars
Upala KBR (DNA; February 10, 2016)
Priyanka Chopra presenting an award at the Oscars this
year is a big deal and every Indian designer is eager for her to sport
their creations. In fact, there is intense pressure on her to wear an
Indian outfit.
Tell her that people in India are expecting her to represent her country and she says, “I am Indian… it’s in my blood, in my heart and in everything I do. I don’t necessarily think an outfit will enhance that perception in any way. I would like to think that my presence at the Oscars is an amalgamation of all I am doing, be it a Hindi film or Quantico. I wear my Indianness as a badge of honour wherever I go and I think that is more important than anything else.”
She adds that there is pressure on her choice for the big night. “Yes, there always is and no matter what my choice, there will be also be critique. I’m never concerned about that. I wear what I think is right,” PC asserts. She adds, “My stylists are in touch with designers from both here in India and internationally and are looking for what will be the perfect outfit for me on the day.”
She says she doesn’t believe in giving any brief to her designer. “I don’t really approach it like that. My team has been working with me long enough to know what I like. We just had a brief discussion on some ideas. I prefer to leave it to the designer to recommend something they think will work best for me… they are the experts after all. I will come in to decide what I feel like wearing on the day.”
Will she offer creative inputs? She maintains, “I have a clear idea of what I think works for me and my team understands that. I give them an initial brief of the direction I want to take, after which they go looking for the perfect outfit. Based on the choices, I decide what to wear finally. I’m a girl… we love options! The more the merrier! It’s like having your cake and eating it, too. It’s tough to pick one, but I mostly I go with what I’m feeling at that moment and what outfit complements that mood, giving me confidence to carry it off. That is my biggest accessory!”
RAPID FIRE: AT THE OSCARS...
I will: Represent! Be confident. Look to have a fun time. Bedazzle! Hahahahaha
What will you carry in your bag that day? My phone and my lipstick! Who needs anything else!
Priyanka Chopra not the first Indian to present an award at the Oscars

DNA (February 8, 2016)
Of late Priyanka Chopra has gained major focus for being selected to present an award at the Oscars ceremony on February 29, but the fact is: she is not the first Indian actress to do so, as reported. It was Persis Khambatta, a Parsi girl born and bred in Mumbai who first became the face of Indian beauty in the giant US-based film industry. Khambatta (October 2, 1948 - August 18, 1998) created celluloid history in 1979 when she sported a bold, bald pate as the memorable Lt Ilia in the immensely successful Star Trek: the Motion Picture. In the 60s, she was hailed by the American media as “the prettiest Indian girl to be seen in the US in many years” during her stint at the Miss World contest in Miami. In 1980, she became the first Indian to present an award at the Oscar ceremony in Los Angeles.
Hopefully my good work will win me an Oscar nomination some day-Priyanka Chopra

Madhreeta Mukhetjee (BOMBAY TIMES; February 4, 2016)
About six months ago,
Priyanka Chopra's pictures were splashed across billboards in America
for her television show. A first for a Bollywood actor. A few months
later, her crackling debut on the American small screen won her The
People's Choice Award. Next, she is one of the 13 esteemed presenters at
the 88th Academy Awards. Another first for an Indian actor. We are
mighty proud, and PC is over the moon. “It is my first year here as an
actor and so much has already happened; I am overwhelmed. There are 13
awards, and I will be presenting one of them in the company of actors
that I have admired for years,“ Priyanka tells us excitedly. Ask her if
her 'Indianness' makes her stand out in the West and she says, “I don't
think of myself as an Indian or American actor. I am just an actor. I
am proud of being an Indian and of course, it adds to my uniqueness. But
all I really want is to be taken seriously as an actor and do my job.“
Being a part of the Oscars means sashay ing on the red carpet, posing for the paparazzi and all the frills that come with it. And of course, the obvious question - what and who will she be wearing on the big night? Will she be in a desi avatar? “It probably won't be an all Indian avatar. The red carpet is about the right mood and what you feel comfortable in. It will be quite a process for my stylist. I am never nervous on the red carpet, as Bollywood award shows have trained me well enough for it. When I walk at the award shows in the West, I don't know too many people, but a lot of them have seen my show. I guess they can sense that I am a little awkward and shy, so they come up to me and talk about my work, about India and our culture.“ she says.
And what about being on the other side, some day? As an Oscar nominee, maybe? She laughs, “Bahut door dekh rahey hain,“ and she adds, “Well, in six months I have reached so far, hopefully my good work will win me an Oscar nomination some day too. But that's jumping the gun, and looking too far ahead. People think that the minute you reach the top that's what success is all about. But honestly, you have to consistently take small and steady steps to reach the pinnacle and be there. Every small step I have taken has resulted in where I am today .I have to continue doing that.“
The Oscar diversity debate is raging with several Hollywood biggies planning to boycott the event, which is being held on February 28 in California. Talking about it, PC says, “Diversity is very important anywhere. I am not someone who is into extremes, but I do believe that major steps need to be taken on the diversity issue by the entertainment industry. I feel television has taken that leap. On my American television show, we have so much diversity. We are heading in that direction and I am hopeful about it.“
And what about the ongoing debate on gender pay inequality in Hollywood? Top actresses are fighting this issue and it is a sensitive point of discussion back home, in Bollywood too. “I think gender pay gap is a global problem. It exists everywhere and I think women in arts, entertainment and cinema are taking strides in this area. It is a slow and steady march and women have to support each other in this fight. Films with just women on the posters are drawing interest and doing well, too. It shows how far we have reached.“
While she is ecstatic about the upswing in her career, what's given her a real high is receiving the Padma Shri. “It came as a shock to me. So much has happened this year, but the Padma Shri is what I am most excited about.“
Ask her about the news of her next project in the West - reportedly the big screen adaptation of the popular American TV show Baywatch -and she doesn't confirm or deny it. “I am discussing a bunch of films here (Hollywood), and in India. I will be taking a hiatus between April and August, so I will have to fit in any new project in between that. I guess this is the way my life will be for the next couple of years -between two countries. There are few people who can get to be in my shoes. I might make some mistakes too, but I will learn and take the risk,“ she signs off.

Priyanka Chopra can barely contain her excitement about becoming the first Indian to present an Academy Award
Sanyukta Iyer (MUMBAI MIRROR; February 3, 2016)
When Priyanka Chopra first met Keli Lee, Executive Vice President of Casting, ABC, in India along with her American manager Anjula Achari-Bath, she categorically stated that she wanted to command the same amount of screen space that she would have on Indian television or at a Bollywood awards night. "I was clear I wanted to be received as the star I already was in India. I felt like a debutante all over again, but actually, I was close to 50-films-old," PeeCee smiles.
Fast forward to a year and a half later, the 33-year-old actress has successfully headlined an American TV show, became the first South Asian to win a People's Choice award, and was recently named one of the presenters, including Steve Carell, Jared Leto, Kerry Washington, among others, at the upcoming Oscar awards, another first for an Indian. "These artists have enriched the international movie-going experience with a range of memorable work from the comic to the profound. In the process, they have won over millions of fans," a release issued by the Academy stated. PeeCee will also be the sole Indian to grace the Academy Awards this year, scheduled for February 28 at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, California.
"What do I say, I am so grateful for everything and feel on top of the world. I am eagerly looking forward to the awards. It will be an insane night. Now, the hunt for the perfect Oscar dress begins," the actress, who couldn't control her excitement upon receiving the news, screamed out loud. "All the no-sleep, shooting two episodes back-to-back in freezing Montreal and continent-hopping has truly paid of," she gushes.
Priyanka recalls being a 17-year-old nobody in Mumbai and today, finding her face plastered on hoardings across New York, California and Los Angeles, makes her smile and feel that her daddy is proud of her achievements.
Last week, the actress was a presenter at the 22nd Screen Actors Guild (SAG) Awards, where she stunned in a pink Monique Lhuillier gown. She describes it as her, "Cinderella moment". The year had begun on a good note for the actress, when she won the People's Choice Award for Popular Actress in a New TV Show for Quantico, and was felicitated with the Padma Shri on Republic Day back home.
There's nothing left to conquer, probably she'll win an Oscar, next? "Hmmm... That's too big a feat, even for me," she signs off.

Priyanka Chopra is wooing
the West and how. PC won the 'Favourite Actress in a New TV Series
Award' at the People's Choice Awards 2016 for Quantico, and presented an
award to Vin Diesel at the same event. She also attended the Screen
Actors Guild Award (SAG) recently. Inching closer to international
stardom, she'll now be a presenter at the forthcoming Oscars, which will
be held on February 28 at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, LA.
Amidst the ongoing outrage against the Academy over the nominees' lack of diversity, the official Twitter handle of the 88th Academy Awards announced its second slate of 13 new Oscar presenters on Monday. It had Priyanka's name on it along side the likes of esteemed artistes like Steve Carell, Jared Leto, Julianne Moore, Olivia Munn, Margot Robbie, Jason Segel, Andy Serkis, Kerry Washington and Reese Witherspoon, to name a few. An ecstatic Priyanka tweeted, “Looking forward to the Academy Awards. This will be an insaaaane night!“ (sic)
In a statement talking about the presenters, Oscars' producers David Hill and Reginald Hudlin said, “These artistes have enriched the international movie-going experience with a range of memorable work from the comic to the profound.
