Actress and dancer Kalpana Iyer, best remembered for the iconic disco number Ramba Ho Ho Ho from the 1981 film Armaan, has found herself back in the spotlight four decades later. A remix of the cult track in Ranveer Singh-starrer Dhurandhar has triggered nostalgia, and a video of Iyer dancing to the song at a private celebration recently went viral. “I am shocked and surprised. This is the love I wanted. Main iss pyaar ki bhookhi thi,” she says.
‘I have given love, so I will get back love’
Talking about the attention coming her way, she shares, “Today’s kids saw me dancing in the viral video, but they discovered the song through Dhurandhar. Full credit goes to timing and God. I have given love, so I will get back love. I never learnt dance formally, but became famous for my own style.”
‘I was a part of many rocking numbers’
Reflecting on her career trajectory, she shares, “I had a wonderful career. It started in 1979 and went on beautifully till 1999. Filmon se pehle I was a model. Later, I was a part of many rocking numbers… there was a lot of work. In the early 90s, I started doing television. Towards the end of the 90s, after Hum Saath Saath Hain, itne khaas roles nahi aa rahe the. A friend in Dubai offered me a job and I was managing a restaurant. It kept me busy. People used to recognize me.”
‘Even a small role would be a beautiful gift’
After the video went viral, she received many calls and even acting offers. Iyer says, “Agar mere naseeb mein likha hai ki main apna 70th birthday iss feeling ke saath celebrate karoon ki I am back in my film industry, toh hone do. Even a small role would be a beautiful gift. I am ready to get back to acting. I just want to tell everyone that I am available for everything — shows, stage shows, ads and movies.”
