Marty Supreme, which was released today in cinemas, has been in the news, more so since yesterday, after it received 9 nominations at the 98th Academy Awards. It tells the story of an expert table tennis player in the 1950s USA and how his life takes dramatic turns. The film is peppered with highly amusing scenes that keep the interest going. The protagonist is an expert manipulator who can go to any lengths to succeed in his endeavour; this bit and his relationship with two women are worth watching. On the flipside, it's too long (152 minutes) and gets stretched in some scenes. The film lacks an emotional core and that goes against the narrative in a crucial scene. Lastly, the absence of subtitles is a bad idea. Timothée Chalamet arguably delivers his career-best act and fully deserves the Oscar nomination. Gwyneth Paltrow and Odessa A'zion play challenging parts with ease. Kevin O'Leary (Milton Rockwell; Kay's husband), Luke Manley (Dion; who lives with his parents), and Koto Kawaguchi (Japanese player Koto Endo) leave a mark. All in all, Marty Supreme makes for a decent watch.
