(Crisp) Movie Review: CHRISTMAS KARMA by FENIL SETA

Christmas Karma is directed by Gurinder Chadha of Bend It Like Beckham and Bride & Prejudice fame. This time, she has adapted Charles Dickens' 'A Christmas Carol' and tells a story of a grumpy Indian man who learns life-altering lessons on Christmas Eve, courtesy three ghosts. The message is lovely and easy to comprehend. It's a rare film to depict Indians leaving Uganda in the 1970s and this track is quite touching. A few songs stand out, while the end is heartening. On the flipside, the first 20 minutes are poor. The writing is not tight or convincing in some scenes. Moreover, Gurinder doesn't know where to draw the line. There are too many birds-eye view shots of London and a fun Punjabi track is played twice; the charm of both are lost to some extent. Kunal Nayyar tries a bit too hard in a few places, but overall, it's a fairly watchable performance. Leo Suter (Bob) and Charithra Chandran (Bea Fernandez) leave a tremendous mark. As for the ghosts, Billy Porter stands out the most, followed by Eva Longoria and Boy George. Shubham Saraf (Raj), Nitin Ganatra (shopkeeper), Shobu Kapoor (Mrs Joshi) and Pixie Lott (Bob's wife) do well. Jassi Sidhu and Malkit Singh are entertaining in cameos. All in all, Christmas Karma makes for a decent timepass watch.
