(Crisp) Movie Review: ANACONDA by FENIL SETA

Anaconda is a story of a group of middle-aged friends, with a passion for filmmaking, who attempt to remake the 1997 classic of the same name, and the comedy that happens as a result. The premise is new (though the Indian audience would remember seeing something similar in Ragini MMS 2 and Tees Maar Khan). Instead of remaking their cult film, Sony Pictures chose to take this novel route. The first half is just decent; the gold mine angle doesn't work. Also, the film could have been scarier, especially int the scenes of the reptile. However, post-interval, the film raises laughs. A particular scene brings the house down. It's so shameful that it was depicted in the trailer. These Hollywood studios really need to understand that you don't need to give out so much in the promos of your film; let people experience it first-hand on the big screen; the impact would be far more. Paul Rudd and Jack Black are cast perfectly and are quite entertaining. Steve Zahn (Kenny) and Thandiwe Newton (Claire) do well, but they get overshadowed by Paul and Jack. Selton Mello (Santiago) and Daniela Melchior (Ana) leave a mark in supporting roles. All in all, Anaconda is a nice surprise of the season.
