For years, Sikh actors in Hindi cinema have been boxed into narrow roles — often as comic relief or muscle-bound side characters. But actor Ammy Virk, who is set to appear in an upcoming film, feels the tide is finally turning.

Alongside Diljit Dosanjh, Virk has emerged as one of the few Sikh actors leading mainstream Hindi films. Reflecting on years of stereotypical portrayals, he says, “I don’t fault the Hindi film industry for that. They were drawing from what they saw around them. If you visit Shri Hazur Sahib (a Sikh holy place in Maharashtra), you’ll notice a different look. There are Sikhs who’ve lived in Maharashtra for generations — their get-up reflects a mixed culture. Filmmakers simply borrowed from that.”

However, he does acknowledge the industry’s role in reinforcing one-dimensional images. “Of course, there was some character assassination. They could have shown Sikhs as sophisticated people too. We’ve had Sikh Prime Minister, pop stars — they represent our culture just as much,” he adds.

Virk is optimistic about the shift in narrative: “Now I’m happy with the change. People like Diljit paaji are doing so well and representing us on a global stage.”
