Actor Shweta Tripathi’s iconic character in the Mirzapur web series, Gajgamini aka Golu, was a hit with the audience. And as the series is set to be adapted into a film, fans are thrilled about getting to experience it on the big screen.
Golu, portrayed as a woman out to avenge the death of her sister and loved ones, is one of the many female characters in Indian series and films that have a dark, violent side.
Discussing the growing trend of female rage in cinema, Tripathi, said, “I think some people prefer seeing the version of women who are quiet and shy. There is nothing wrong in it as long as it’s out of choice. But actually conditioning itni strong ho jaati hai and I want to challenge that.” She added, “I want to raise my hand and ask questions. And if you don’t see my hand, I will stand up on a chair to be seen. I think it is time to challenge all those myths and taboos and ask questions. We are realising now that we are a product of conditioning and even men are changing beautifully.”
Ask if she stars in the film, and she quips, “Mirzapur Golu ke bina ban hi nahi sakta!” Discussing the teaser — which also features popular characters like Kaleen bhaiya, Guddu and even Munna (played by actors Pankaj Tripathi, Ali Fazal and Divyenndu, respectively), who had died in the series — she shared, “Abhi writing mein hai and jaise ki humne teaser mein bhi dekha, even Munna is going to be a part of it.”
The 39-year-old further added that the film will be set in a different timeline, one preceding the events covered in the series. “Ye kahaani tab ki hai jab Munna zinda tha,” she explained.
Anyone who has watched the series knows that it was packed with abuse and violence, true to the plot. But will the makers tweak the film for the theatre audience so that it passes muster with the censor board? Tripathi feels, “I think that Mirzapur has to be true to the character and the world. Wo hum disservice kar denge to the audience, the fans, and even ourselves, if we change the flavour. And I really hope and pray ki woh na ho.”
