Sukhwinder Singh, the voice behind iconic hits such as Chaiyya Chaiyya (Dil Se, 1998), Jai Ho (Slumdog Millionaire, 2008), among several others, has reached an impressive stage in his career. Naturally, one would expect his fees to be quite high, reflecting his success. But in a surprising twist, the singer has decided to charge nothing — well, close to nothing — for film songs.

“I noticed some time ago that new-age music directors may have received incorrect information about my fees, believing that I charge a lot. So, I decided to include in my contracts that I will charge zero money for film songs for the time being,” the 52-year-old explains.

Singh reveals that rumours about his high fees were causing him to lose opportunities: “I have made it clear that I don’t want money; just give me a good song. I am comfortable in life and continue to charge for my performances at concerts. On one hand, I say music is my life, and on the other hand, I monetise it for film songs? I will only be able to learn from the new breed when I am able to reach them.”

The singer has even returned contracts he had already signed, along with the agreed fees. “Some mentioned Rs. 10 lakh, others up to Rs. 11 lakh. I returned contracts for six films,” he shares with a chuckle, while also explaining the exact reason behind charging Rs. 2: “The lawyers told me they cannot technically write Rs. 0, so I suggested Rs. 1. They laughed and said it was not acceptable, so I asked, ‘Rs. 2 toh bante hi honge?’”
