Actresses and sisters Surpiya Pathak and Ratna Pathak Shah are veterans of Hindi cinema, but did you know that their dad Baldev Pathak also had a filmi link? Baldev was a stylist to Rajesh Khanna and Dilip Kumar long before styling an actor’s look came into vogue.

Supriya says, “My dad used to be a dealer of imported cars and sold one to the late Dilip Kumar. That’s how he got connected with a lot of Hindi film actors.”

How did the switch to fashion happen? “He started a store for men’s clothing near the Gateway of India. A lot of leading actors from the film industry started visiting the store to get custom-made outfits. Soon enough, my dad took up designing and styling Rajesh Khanna’s off-screen looks, including the guru kurtas, long shirts with belts and shirts where the stitching would show. Many of these became popular trends. I have fond memories of Dilip Kumar and Rajesh Khanna attending the Diwali puja at our store.”

Their mum Dina Pathak was an actress and director of Gujarati theatre and film actor. She was an activist and President of the National Federation of Indian. She acted in over 120 films in a career spanning over six decades.
