(Crisp) Movie Review: JAANE JAAN by FENIL SETA

Jaane Jaan's (released today on Netflix) setting is eerie and intriguing. The way director Sujoy Ghosh has set the mood adds to the impact. The 140 minute long film is not nail-biting as such. Yet, it is very engaging and doesn't bore even for a moment. A few moments stand out and the suspense in the end is unexpected. However, one can't help but draw parallels to a popular Hindi film franchise, which has a similar plot. This affects the film largely. Secondly, the ending is abrupt and one wishes that was not the case and the makers had thought of another witty plot point. Lastly, a few developments are not easy to digest. Speaking of performances, Kareena Kapoor is apt for the part and delivers a splendid performance. Jaideep Ahlawat and Vijay Varma have given several accomplished performances in the past. Yet, they are sure to amaze viewers in Jaane Jaan. Saurabh Sachdeva is impressive yet again. Karma Takapa (Sundar Singh) leaves a mark. Naisha Khanna (Tara), Lim Laishram (Prema), Markush Lepcha (Dipok) and Habib Al Aidroos (Naidu; forensic doctor) are decent. All in all, Jaane Jaan is a decent watch.
