Actor Sonam Kapoor Ahuja doesn’t think the gender pay gap in Bollywood will reduce anytime soon. She shared her views at the Creative Industries and Cultural Economy Summit as part of India Global Forum’s UK-India Week on Wednesday.
“The gender pay gap [in Bollywood] is humongous. I don’t think that will be narrowing very soon, but the roles [for women] are getting meatier,” she said, citing the example of actors Alia Bhatt and Deepika Padukone, who have played central characters in Hindi films.
Talking about casting diversity in the West, the 38-year-old added, “It’s a token thing. I’ve been represented internationally and you’re always cast as the exotic Indian girl. Diversity needs to be taken more seriously, because brown people are the most populous in the world at the moment.”
