Sayani Gupta on Bollywood’s inner circle
Debarati S Sen (BOMBAY TIMES; June 13, 2023)
In the last decade, Sayani Gupta has worked with a range of filmmakers and has played diverse roles in films like Fan, Margarita With A Straw, Jolly LLB 2, Pagglait and Article 15. The actress says that the industry is changing for the better, but cliques continue to exist, and every outsider has to figure out a way to navigate around them.
However, Sayani, who was seen in the popular web series Four More Shots Please!, believes that OTT has changed the game for actors like her.
‘EVERYTHING IN THE INDUSTRY IS BASED ON CONTACTS’
Sayani says, “It is just way harder for people from outside to get in. Everything in this industry is based on contacts and how many people you know. Of course, talent and merit matter, but so do other factors like how many people are excited to see you on the screen.”
‘WITH CASTING DIRECTORS, THINGS ARE MORE STREAMLINED IN THE INDUSTRY’
Sayani shares, “Yes, there has been a change and OTT is a huge reason behind it. Now even with casting directors, things are more streamlined. A lot has changed for the better in the industry.”

“The industry's inner circle is very well-knit, quite impermeable and impossible to enter. There are few who enter it, but the core still is very dense, and even if you get close, you just can't get inside.”
