With hits like Kal Ho Naa Ho, Suraj Hua Maddham, and many more to his credit over the years, Sonu Nigam’s fan base spans across generations.

The singer is content with still being relevant and shares, “I have been singing on stage for the last 45 years and when I hear from my team that our schedule is packed and there are no dates to accommodate more shows, it feels humbling. It also feels great to be nominated for awards even today. God has been very gracious to me.”

The singer’s live performances are consistently high on adrenaline. When asked if it gets overwhelming at times, he replies, “I work out and practise hard to keep myself in good vocal shape. But when I am on stage and in my zone, I feel something divine takes control of me.”

‘PROUD OF THE NEW GENERATION’
Talking about the trend of remakes, Sonu says, “I don’t mind singers introducing older music, packaged in a new way, to the younger generation. Old or new, music is music. As long as credit is given to the original creators, it’s fine.”

He also believes that the current music scenario has become multidimensional due to world wide exposure. “From rap, fusion and ballads to semi-classical and regional music, we have it all. We should be proud of our new generation,” he says.

‘EFFICIENT SECURITY IS MANDATORY AT EVENTS’
Addressing the recent incident where a person manhandled his team on stage after a concert in Mumbai, Sonu says the outcome could’ve been way worse. “Humans get carried away in the heat of the moment sometimes. I have nothing against anyone. The complaint had to be filed just so there’s awareness and such incidents don’t get repeated with anyone else in the future,” he says.

The singer adds, “Efficient security is a mandatory prerequisite (at events). Along with that, a basic sense of compassion and respect for anyone is necessary among the general public. This can make the artiste-fan experience more beautiful.”
